Quiet Train Ride
"Are we sure she's still alive over there," Harry asked, gesturing to the long silver haired girl sitting next to the window in the, cramped, train cabin. "I'm sure she would've woken up by now."
The girl in question had been sleeping for the entire train ride, so far. Even the other sleeping cabin occupant had woken up once and talked with them for about an hour before falling back asleep, claiming that he had a long trip trying to make it to the train on time before he left. The other sleeping occupant was named Lupin and he told them that he's to be their next Defense Against the Dark Arts professor. Hermione tried asking multiple questions about the upcoming classroom material, but the new professor declined all questions, claiming that he preferred to keep all his students on an equal level when starting the course and revealing the material would be giving some students a leg up on others.
"Well maybe she had a long trip to make it to the train station on time," Ron suggested, while trying to get a look through the girls hair to see any bit of her face. The attempt was in vain though, that silver hair is completely covering the girls face, and no one dared move her hair to get a peek.
When they first entered the train cabin, the silver haired girl and Professor Lupin were already there and sleeping. They wondered about the new girl, she had a hair color similar to Malfoy's but while his hair is a more an extreme blonde, this girl's long mane is silver. There was also the clothes the girl was wearing, while the other train occupants were wearing normal casual clothes, this girl looked like she was a stereotypical punk rocker girl. She was sporting a black leather coat over, some type of, a graphic tee shirt. Black jeans and black boots that look like they've been in use for a while, and on her hands were black cloth gloves with the fingers cut off and knuckles exposed.
They did notice her luggage, in the overhead compartment, and the name on the suitcase stated that it belonged to a "Eva Redgrave". That didn't ring a bell for anyone in the cabin, but Hermione suggested that maybe Hogwarts started an exchange program or maybe it was a rare case of a student having to transfer due to some family problems and moved to another country. The ladder was probably the most likely since wizarding schools are not overly fond of having exchange programs and very few actually have them.
While mystery of the silver haired girl was a nice little distraction, Harry's thoughts drifted back to trying to figure out the connection between himself and the escaped convict Sirius Black. After some time, the only connection he could think is that Black worked for Voldemort and wanted revenge for what happened that fateful night when he lost his parents. Hopefully, Harry can have at least one year where he's not faced with a life and death situation, and get to the most important thing to him. Finding his twin sister.
He still remembered that night like it was yesterday. Vernon was carrying his struggling sister to his car after she hit Dudley in defense while he jumped on her and started punching her. Harry ran to her and tried to pull her free of his massive uncles arms, but the man simply swatted him away as he threw his sister in the back of his car. When his uncle pulled the car out of the driveway, Harry tried to follow the car for as long as possible, but eventually lost the vehicle and he was on his knees, in the middle of the road, sobbing for who knows how long. It wasn't until a police officer found him and managed to track down where Harry lived. Every other night, he dreams about that and the her crying for help. Crying to him for help.
Harry's thought came to a screeching halt, along with the train as well. Him, Hermione, and Ron were all looking around trying to figure out what happened. Professor Lupin and Eva Redgrave didn't seemed to be effected by the sudden stopping of the locomotive. A moment later entire train car shook. "Bloody hell, what's happening," Ron cried out. Maybe it was the shaking of the train car or Ron's outcry, but Eva, sleepily, responded, "Shut up, lady." If Harry wasn't so scarred at the moment, he'd defiantly laugh at this.
There was motion outside the cabin door, it looked as if a shadow was making its way towards the door. Reaching an arm out, Harry could see a long bony, dark colored, hand with sharp claws make a motion and snap the cabin door open. What was standing in the doorway was nothing short of the scariest thing Harry had ever seen, and he went toe to toe with the basilisk last year. A floating black cloaked creature that seemed to just suck the life out of the entire cabin, whatever this creature was seemed to cause Hermione's cat to hiss and Ron's rat to run and hide in his sleeve.
In this moment, a memory suddenly popped into Harry's head. It was the best memory he had with his sister, Alice Lee Potter. They were in the cupboard, under the stairs, after another night of receiving no supper, and Alice pulled out the markers she stolen from Dudley's room when she was upstairs cleaning earlier that day. They drew on the wall since they didn't have any paper, it was of them running away to find a new family, and living happily ever after.
The memory suddenly stopped and it felt like it was being pulled right out of him, the black robed creature seemed to be pulling it from him. His energy was instantly drained, so much so he couldn't even reach for his wand in defense. Feeling himself get weaker and weaker, Harry thought his life was being drained from his body.
The creature seemed to be getting closer and Harry was still struggling to move, silently praying someone would step in. "Hey jackass," a female sounding voice said. Thank you God. "Suck on this." A deafening bang was heard and a blinding bright light filled Harry's vision. Feeling himself slip into unconsciousness.
The last thing Harry heard before darkness took him was a young sounding girl. "Harry help me!"
Eva Redgrave was not having a good time. It all started when those three other, probably, students, loudly, came into the train cabin and would not shut up, but she did not have the energy to tell them to shut up. Then after some time she finally managed to fall back asleep and was having a pleasant dream about her, her father, Trish, and Lady exterminating some demons. Then she heard Lady yell, "Bloody hell, what's happening."
That was what woke her from her sleep. Moving her silver hair out of her face and rubbing the sleep out of her eyes, Eva suddenly realized a dark haired boy, with glasses, was being attacked by some floating, dark robed, creature. It looked as if it was trying to suck the life out of him and she wasted no time springing into action and firing on the creature with her pistols, Lux and Tenebris. That seemed to stun the creature momentarily, she quickly grabbed her sword, Lucendi, that was propped against the bench she was sitting on and leaped towards the creature.
Right before Eva reached the creature, the sleeping man, Professor Lupin, if she heard correctly, rose from his seat and cast a spell from his wand. Whatever it was, it was bright and if she wasn't part devil she would call it a blinding light.
Ignoring the bright light, Eva crashed into the creature, knocking it onto the ground along with her. Moving quicker than this creature ever could, she straddled the creature and unsheathed Lucendi. She briefly felt the dark cloaked figure attempt to suck her life energy out, but it felt like nothing to her as she plunged her sword into the creatures head. It screeched in pain and started convulsing, all while a dark mist erupted from the head wound made by her sword. A few seconds later the convulsing stopped and so did the erupting dark mist, it was probably dead but Eva knew better than to assume something was dead, cause that's when it springs to life again and takes a chunk out of someone. Pulling the sword out and driving it back in again to make sure it was really dead, and after the third stab to its head, she concluded it was dead.
After standing up from the corpse, Eva pulled Lucendi from the creatures head and sheathed it. Examining the creature, she had no idea what it was. It defiantly wasn't a demon, if it was she would've detected it well before it was in the doorway of her train cabin. It must've been a magical creature. Damn Eva thought. I should've actually read some more of that monster book they sent me. She made a mental note to ask about these creatures later.
Turning back to the cabin she was in, Eva saw Lupin, a girl, around her age, with frizzy brown hair, and a red head boy, still around her age, staring at her with wide eyes. She was felt like a deer in the headlights, not knowing how to really interact with people, outside of the rest of the Devil May Cry crew. Flashing a, painfully, forced smile, she lightly waved her hand. "Uh," she started. "How you guys doing this fine evening?"
"H-How," Lupin stammered out, taking a cautious step outside the train cabin. "How did you do that?" Eyes never leaving the dark cloaked creature, complete disbelief on his face.
"Well," Eva casually started, holding the, sheathed Lucendi on her shoulders. "Most things tend to die when you stab them three times in the head." Explaining it, almost as if she was talking to a child, but the man seemed to still be in complete shook to notice her tone.
"But it's a dementor," Lupin stated, a little more firmly after he got close enough to nudge the creatures hand with his foot, confirming for himself that it was dead. Focusing on Eva, his eyes hardened a bit, but there was an obvious curiosity to them. "How did you do that?"
"Well, most non-demonic creatures can't handle a single hit from a Devil Arm and I wasn't gonna let this jackass," Eva said giving a quick kick to the carcass on the train floor. "Suck off that kid in there."
Lupin seemed to be briefly taken aback by the crude end of the sentence, but recollected himself fairly quickly. "Alright, here's what we need to do. You need to take that dementor to the last train car, it's usually empty. I'm going to stay here and help Harry when he wakes up, then I'm gonna talk to the conductor." Turning back to the doorway of the cabin, but he briefly stopped and turned back around, tossing Eva a small brown square that she easily caught. "Also, chocolate helps when dealing with dementors." Walking back into the cabin, Lupin knelt down to the boy with the glasses, probably Harry, and was checking on him.
Eva shrugged as she threw the piece of chocolate in her mouth and started chewing it as she bent over and threw the dementor carcass over her shoulders. Walking to the next train cabin, the door was open and the students staring at her with wide eyes. Not paying too much attention to occupants, "Hey the back of the train is that way right?" Pointing towards the direction she was walking and they nodded, eyes still widen in both fear and awe. "Thanks," she said, giving them a thumbs up.
After her third train car, Eva started to get annoyed with the stares she was getting from the occupants. She thought that going to a school filled with witches and wizards would finally stop the judgmental stares, but leave it to her to start getting the stares before she even walked through the doors of the school. She pulled her hair over her face again, a simple defense but effective enough to help her get through those horrible years in Fortuna until her father rescued her, and it's all she could really do right now.
Eva Redgrave was not having a good time.
Harry's eyes snapped open and he shot up onto the couch he was laying on, and looked around the train cabin.
Hermione and Ron were sitting across from him, but they quickly rushed to his side and helped him relax into a sitting position. "You alright mate," Ron asked, placing a hand on his shoulders. Harry nodded and tried to stand up but the hands of his two friends kept him in his position on the couch. "You're gonna have to take it easy there. That dementor really seemed after you for some reason."
The cabin door opened and Professor Lupin was standing there looking at him with a relaxed expression, probably happy to see that he was conscious again. "You feeling alright," Lupin asked and Harry nodded. He pulled something from his pocket and handed it to Harry. "It's chocolate."
"That thing," Harry started, while taking the chocolate bar. "It was a dementor right?"
"Yes," the new professor said, "They're the guards of Azkaban. It's been," there was a pause for a moment. "dealt with. It was probably searching the train for Sirius Black." Standing up and going back to the cabin door. "Now if you'll excuse me I need to have a word with the driver." Turning back to Harry and giving him a soft smile. "Eat, you'll feel better."
"Wait Professor," Harry said as Lupin turned away, and turning back around after he heard Harry's voice. "Where'd that girl go." Pointing to the vacant spot in the cabin where the silver haired girl used to be.
Lupin briefly looked like he was trying to think of an answer for a moment. "Oh I asked her to check on some of the students in the other train cars." While he was giving his answer though, the professor shot a quick glance at both Ron and Hermione. Harry nodded to Lupin who quickly turned, heading towards the front of the train to talk to the driver.
As soon as the new professor was out of sight. "What else happened," Harry said aloud, not caring who exactly responds, just as long as he got an answer. Feeling his two friends obviously tense up. Lupin must've told them not to say anything, or something to that regard. "I don't care what happened, I just want to know what exactly happened."
"Well," Hermione started, defiantly unsure how to answer.
"That girl," Ron started. "Eva, was it?" He turned to Hermione and she nodded. "Well she," pausing for a moment, as if to replay it in his head to make sure he's one-hundred percent sure that he knows what he saw. "She killed the dementor."
What? What? What? She killed a dementor? What?
"I thought," Harry started, looking towards Hermione, the one person who's supposed to know everything, and the look on her face told him that she was just as stumped with this as he was.
Harry remembered reading about dementors last year after Professor McGonagall briefly mentioned them in her class. One of the few times he takes initiative when it comes a topic, he found one of the books about dark creatures in the library and spent an hour reading the chapter it had on the creatures. The chapter sent a chill up his spine and he hoped that he'd never run into that creature. Apparently, no one was listening when he hoped that. He was also mentally slapping himself for not realizing what it was when it was standing in the doorway, but, in all fairness, the pure terror he felt made him forget how to breath for several moments.
"It was wicked," Ron said, Harry turned to him, who looked like he was about to continue the story, when the cabin door flew open and startled the trio.
It was Eva Redgrave. She looked to Harry, he could just barely make out her emerald green eye staring at him. What surprised the young Potter was the evident concern in just the one eye alone. "Harry right," the silver haired girl said, genuine compassion very clear in her voice, that sounded much more mature than she probably actually was. Harry nodded. "You doing alright?" Nodding again.
Harry now noticed the katana looking sword, sheathed in her left hand and his eyes widened looking at it. Eva placed it where she was sitting, next to the window, while she reached into the overhead compartment for her suitcase. Rummaging around for something, "Well that good," she said as she pulled out a book with a elegant looking letter "V" on the front cover. Sitting back down in her original seat, she brushed her hair completely out of her face and flipped open her book. "I'll be right here until we get to the school. Just let me know if you have any monsters that need killing." Chuckling to that last bit to herself.
It just suddenly occurred Harry that this girl was speaking with an American accent, but that wasn't what was surprising him. It was that this girl, Eva Redgrave, the only know person to actually kill a dementor, looked exactly like his mother.
I've been working on this for a while and it's not remotely finished, but it's been burning a hole in my computer so I gotta upload some of it. Eva's backstory will be explained more in future chapters.
Constructive criticism is appreciated.
