Chapter 1: All Aboard!
/
There was a gap of time to sit and wait for the last train back to her home; Aozora Michiru was late to get back after the office had kept her to fix a few new comer's messes. She had her head up, but now it was drooping towards the ground. She pulled out her cell phone to check if her mother in Kobe had sent her a reply on the place she'd be meeting up with the old woman in another month. Vacation hours didn't apply to the working class of this city in Tokyo. How being by some country air would do the body good.
Last train and hours to go…she'd taken the shot as the rattle of the tracks had Michiru rise and grip her bag. "Finally…Heke – chan will be upset that I left him alone…"
Her only friend in the city was a golden hamster she'd picked up in her first few weeks in the new firm. How she had time to coddle it, only god kn–
The rattle along her line of sight, below her feet…was loud, yet no lights turned on to indicate there was a train on the track in front of her. Until…
A roaring sound, the escalation of magnets was not at all, but steam and smoke.
"What???"
The roaring beast puffed clouds of what looked to be living entities out as it ran, faster, fast as Michiru screamed and threw her hands over her head on the ground. The dim lighting, the wait for the damned driver…it got to be enough that she opened a tear cracked eye to see a man without a face but a wide grip as he extended a white gloved hand to her. He wore a suit not from her country, or time. He was, hard to see as she stood up, shakily not knowing what entranced her to follow the man to the train and as the doors melded shut…

THERE IS A LOT OF SUPERNATURAL STUFF IN THIS, I COULD HAVE MADE IT A MURDER SCENE BUT MISSING PERSON AND POSSESED TRAINS HAS A NICE INTRODUCTORY RING TO IT.

"Coming through! Gommenei!" (typo for dramatic relevance!) Running down the halls to her first class of the day, Ami Grayson was not headed there to where learning would begin. She had a chore to finish via her role in this special school for gifted magi.
"Ami – you are going to lose the spirit!" Haru let her four legs work, forgetting she was in a long school skirt as the boys were punched in the face by getting tail in their faces. "Oy, oy! Stop rushing, this instan –
"Sorry, sensei." A lollipop bopping Kaede stared over her shoulder as she summoned a psychic wall to trap the scurrying youkai in the halls. Ami had become something of a prefect due to her association as Amaterasu Hime's supposed vassal of power in the future. "We got it??" Haru turned to the crowd; now outside the barrier and by one upperclassman; Iyori Dairenji – sama. A real prodigy who was sure this was a foolish task to house sit the building. "Go ahead, Ami – chan." Iyori chuckled mockingly to the sixteen-year-old foreigner. "What are you going to do about that mushi? Was it wise to not let it flee?"
Mushi, was the equivalent of a bug, and Ami was no Mushishi!
"It's done…~ Michi o fusagi, kori to ishi no yo ni ugokanaku shite kudasai….~ Ami raised her mirror od the goddess from the universal pocket she wove. The girl's other classmates were astir. She continued to cast as the previous teacher went to get the head of the school. This was not a circus! (Her dad was an acrobat!)
~ Nigeyou to shinaide kudasai. Hikari no megami wa anata ni kotaeru yo kyosei shimasu!!~ Her hands lit up as the critter huddled into a ball, defending whst it could of its petty existence. It had been lured to its death inside of a school born by magic to this country and many others. How careless a life, as Ami took one last breath to send it packing.
~ Soshite, kaiho sa remasu!!!!~
The light of her mirror pulled onto the little daemon in as Ami pulled it close with her strength now much better as she'd grown to discover. "Hah! You are free…" As she huffed, the sound of padded traditional footwear brought the foxes, teens and young prefect to turn around. The mirror starting to sleep now in between her fingertips.
Dairenji only smirked and wondered how entertaining it would be to set a boa - spirit loose in the school for Ami to find and scare her witless.
/
"This is not a play place, Miss. Ami." The elderly headmistress of the school had taken to Ami as her mark of the goddess had the child respected under the mistress's authority. As she sipped her tea and frowned at the events sge'd seen in the hallways, Director Tomori had to say something. "This is not the first instance that you have overreacted and used your powers unwisely." She looked to the file of the partners Ami had made to come along. Her spirit familiars, twin foxes. "Students Haru and Kaede both are not doing their best to see to your growth here at this academy. You were given high marks in your tests, you even joined the art club a few weeks ago. It was an exceptional piece." The elder's brows furrowed a bit. "You are restless, this I know it, my dear. Your guardians told me that your power of light is quite bright, though your impulsive nature is unbecoming."
"There was a spirit that disrupted the girl's dorms, ma'am…." Ami told the headmistress, rushed in a way. "I had to do what I could, because no one else wa –
"It was a harmless creature and you tortured it."
"I….it spit at me…."
Haru's ears drooped as Kaede's were conflicted and twitched in mild interest. "Ami chan could tell you, not all cute animals carry venom yet others mask their abilities. It could have gotten stronger."
"It wasn't, I assure you." Director Tomori sipped her tea as she soon stood to place it onto a saucer, wafting with her traditional westernized style attire floating behind and her rimmed glasses a few pinches too far from over her eyes. She did look quite serious…
"You needed to fight, and so we asked you to be our look out for any activity in your city of Tokyo. Here in Osaka, the demons are scarcely around. We are holy warriors, my child. You know this, so why would you act without reason?"
"I, didn't think it was …" Ami sighed. "Can I give it any offerings to form my apology?"
"My dear, I will do so. It is my school. My pact with the mountain to see to less chaos on its grounds while we simply live rent free." Tomori shook her head with a sorry sigh, "Yet, you are not focused. Not enough as you'd been a month before the break and seeing your family; your work will suffer if this keeps up. I am assigning another of my decorated staff to assist you on your nightly runs and daily events here in the –
"Wait, we are her guardians!" Kaede barked out, now very interested in what Director Tomori was working towards. "And who could be qualified to baby sit a sixteen-year-old treasure!" Haru barked along, worried as well that they had all disrupted the status quo since coming to this private high school in the mountains.
"She is actually an upperclassman of your same division; Miss Dairenji? You may enter." With a wave, the door was opened and the smile of a Chō no josei, with wings so faceted to shine and reflected every dark feature within it….Ami was sure she'd never live it down.
"Hello again. Amelia, kohai…."
/
Her hair was smooth and dark as Auntie Blackfire's to Ami. Almost as if reincarnation was real. Her features were kady like, upper class in Japanese society. She had a standing here as a next head of Shrine maidens and as a child to a wealthy conglomerate that funded the school via his address to their religious devotion. It was more like a syndicate; Ami would have wondered. She was familiar with the Sola sect Aria ran, but what about here?
"Yes, I would be happy to assist my underclassmen." Ami's distracted thoughts came back to her when Kaefe bellowed out another protest.
"NANIII?"
Iyori ignored the flavorless pup's attitude. "What might be our first order of –
" Hold on!" Kaede raised her hackles, the girl rotten rich girl summon her very own familiar as a Shinobi spirit with light green and dark purple eyes and elven ears. She had long hair, did not smile, and held her long mane up partly with a long tail or ribbon around her head. The creature looked to be Ami's exact opposite. Cold, ruthless, like Kaede had once been.
A shadow.
"Aya – Chan. Greet our new associate, please." Waving for the fae to start up the drums, this unusual character bowed in its strict stance as Ami gawked by how Kaede was feeling upstaged. If only she were a few feet taller with a smaller ass….and those ears were her trademark!
"Aya, right? Nice to meet you. I'm Ami –
"Speak to me as any of your noble by blood, would." The creature soon had Haru hop from her chair. "Your guard dogs are too active. Restrain them. I know you harbor a power that is precious to this school, Miss Ami."
Aya bowed a bit lower, coming up as Iyori tried to seem smug about their entire meeting. "I am glad to assist Mistress Iyori's associates. Please, see to it that you also amount to the same favor of our Headmistress as she requests it."
Aya was, a strange duck. Everyone could smell the killer's instinct in her eyes. "I don't like her. She's more like a tool than a guardian in my eyes…Headmistress Tomori –
"My decision is to try. If this trial is exactly what our faction requests, you may not need to continue as you are. Iyori is one of our most dedicated students." Tomori told Ami, who buttoned her lip during the rest of their meeting. "Now, I have one case handed to me on my desk from the organization and I believe it would have you two to understand one another better. For a better way to learn, you will be going out to the bullet train terminal in Kobe." She told the two. "Pack what you need. Your guardians are being told as we wait for more unthinkable moments to occur."
"Why in Kobe?? That is six or more hours….I, cannot pack in time. …Headmistress!" Ami saw how upset this idea was now makingbIyori and it didn't make her feel great about dragging the girl in either. "You want us both to stay in the same quarters together? In the country with some, rural folk??"
"Hey. My uncle Clark was from Kansas." Ami boasted proudly. "Right now, the city you live in and me, is doing more damage to the environment that those in the country ever could hurt with their methods alone. You owe them everyone for their dedication."
"Ami, you are partly right. There is no backing out of this decision however, Miss Dairenji." Director Tomori said this, not as apologetically, as Ami might have agreed of the old woman's extended empathy. "Then…I want to bring Saturday with me! He'd make this trip far more bearable." Iyori huffed and pouted as Tomori nodded, allowing the change.
"Who is Saturday?" Ami asked as Kaede set her death glare onto Aya's two shut orbs. Aya casually snorted and tried to keep her cool while Kaede had to control the fact that she'd been called a dog by a daemon of an unfamiliar lineage.
"My butler, and my very first contracted spirit guardian of a sort." Boasted the princess of the school. "Saturday is, not a fan of leaving me to rot among the common folk."
Ami puffed out her cheeks and tried to keep her temper together. Really?? Another snobby demon??
"Where will we be stationed for a time, Lady Headmistress." Aya asked politely while Haru and the others set down their miseries to listen.
"A small inn, there. A friend of the school's advisor owns it as a vacation home. You will be very comfortable there."
"Sure…." Ami put her finger up in objection as it fell again. "Only thing, my guardians are… very protective of me traveling with strange spirits..."
Even as a mortal, Tomori only gave a fox's smile while Aya looked on from the post she'd been told to take heed of.
"Leave everything to me. Return to your daily activities and both of you; I wish to see you in my office first thing tomorrow. So go home and pack. Leave the rest up to your headmistress to worry over."

Back in Tokyo, the reports of a missing woman were only the first to land on Officer and detective Hisao Fukayama's desk. His floppy black hair and darting dead fish eyes needed coffee. Stat. His partner was a young flushed idiot by the name of Sun Woo Yee Hashirou. With his short cropped black hair and wise eyes at almost every advantage, he was not back with the week's intel and was quite cool headed compared to the pack fir being tardy by a few seconds…and where was his joe??
Except…. around claims of supernatural events….Hashirou was a crybaby when it came to the unexplained.
He had been living in the country due to his mother's heritage overseas and his home was here, once she'd stepped onto his father's wealthy foot to separate herself from a gruesome marriage. Not as gruesome as the abductions at the station with little to no evidence that it was done by even a single name on a blank pin up board.
"What have we got, Sun?" Grumbled Hisao as the clipboard and documents practically fell into the other superior officer's hands. "The commander and chief would not think less of your deductions, but how about we look over the interviews of the wo–
"More and more people are going onto that train thinking it's ok to stand by and take candy from a stranger." Snorted the elder superior. "It could be mass hypnosis. After the zombie scare a few years back? You think things are as you see them anymore?"
"I'm just saying…" Swallowed Sun Woo as he tried to stay focused on what the chief wanted, not some detective novel. His superior under the man was intending to write and self-publish a ghost story; it was strange too; these supposed weird creature sightings had gotten worse since the sightings of those people known as heroes from America had few years back blown up the internet. Surely there was no real connection, was there? If we treat this case as we want, more women and families will go missing."
Sun Woo finished thatsentence as Hisao seemed not to take much seriouslyas he'd expected. "Your ideas are…a bit far-fetched. I did perform one interview and found that at ten forty - five pm, the last train was supposed to show only an hour past but many reported it not coming in at all. Not until the next morning. Though, there were no clues. The rest is...a mystery.."
"Spirited away." Hisao moved from his seat and hot his coat. He pulled out a pack of cigarettes and took one too his lips while he put a sleeve through said coat to go tall a walk around the city. This was pointless. He needed leads, and for all the better. Soon.
"AH! AND!" Sun Woo had the man pausing by what came next. "We have a request or demand from the chief to see in possible aides to our case from the syndicate group "Sola Inc." He spoke. "They are from abroad. The pair normally work with leads that cannot be…. are we going to trust that??' Sun Woo flew to the chief's desk as Hisao moved quickly to light his smokes and make one quick phone call.
/
The click of his cell and a buzz later, a puff of smoke in the back lot of the precinct, a voice came on.
~ Good to hear from you, old friend. Did the intelligence find its way to you. ~
"Kazuya, I know you interested the Sola group in this ti investigate but we have it covered… no one here believes you even are who you tell me. I know though, I can see you because its my grandmother's gift that allows us to connect like this. So, help me out. Who is coming to Tokyo Precinct to make a monkey outta me and my team."
Kazuya was (in Tt universal war, he is Inari as a human firm among them to watch and assist in keeping the balance between worlds. As a God, he was never kicked off of his post so he's going to twist Ami the wrong way later. He also teases Hisao a bit because he is after all a magical fox. The guy is full-on white-haired bishop material.)
~ Trust me when I tell you…..they are no laughing matter. Tell your staff to keep an open mind – this is a demon that howls in the dead of night and dies not stop for those it finds unit to ride in its space to the underworld. Never to return. They will be showing up at your doorstep, and your old pal Dick Grayson – kyun is the father of your next later, partner in crime...whence she gets time to visit. ~
Dick Grayson. He was a sub officer and a cop historical legend ; when he'd been overseas in the earlier days, Hisao had trained beside the man. They were only a few years apart, but Richard was tough. Skilled in any fight, could fly and leap out of harm's way. It seemed now that his child or family member had taken in the parent's footsteps. Hisao chuckled and put his head back as he let the call drop. Guessing that Kazuya, that old fox face, felt it all as amusing as he did.
"Well, I'll be…." He wiped his face of any bits of fatigue and headed in to find Sun Woo protesting this case and getting his ass handed to him by the chief to take orders or go back to filing papers in the basement. With big fat tears and a fast few nods, Sun Woo relented. Hisao put a hand on the younger's shoulder. "I'll tell ya, Tokyo is a real place. More than you think since you've never met a hero before with yer own eyes. I'll introduce us."
"I hope this doesn't against protocol in anyway." Huffed Sun Woo as he left to go finish his daily reports and eat his lunch. "Find me with your coffee in the other room." The man said drolly over his shoulder, his brown eyes apathetic and miserable by what he had to come to question in a place of scientific deductions.
"It might have gone flat by then."

Chapter one! Next? Ami finds out why the place they'll be staying in Kobe is so important. Hisao looks into the person who'll be coming to see him. a detective of the supernatural??
