[spoilers for Quintessential Quintuplets movie and manga]
The purpose of this story is to give a proper ending to Yotsuba and Nino, mostly in terms of their psychological growth. If you like Yotsuba and/or Nino, hopefully you will like this. Or if you just want to see more scenes of Fuutarou and Yotsuba being a couple, or you want Nino to have more closure to her character development, hopefully you will like this. I'll be delving into the psychology of Fuutarou and Ichika as well. Miku and Itsuki will be mostly supporting characters.
This will start at chapter 114 (when Fuutarou enters the room of his chosen quint). It will replace 114 onward, then continue past the manga.
Yotsuba POV 1
"Yo."
Yotsuba freezes just as her hand reaches her phone, which she left in the nurse's office on the bed.
That voice. It can't be…
She is too shocked to move. Her feet feel frozen. She feels like she has to muster all her energy to turn around.
"Did you really have to make me wait so long?" He laughs nervously.
"Uesugi-san…why are you…Oh sorry about that. I wanted to go check on-" said Yotsuba.
"Always worrying about your sisters. Don't worry, it's fine. I waited six years, I don't mind waiting a few more minutes."
"Uesugi-san…why are you here? What do you mean 'six years'?"
"Well I kept you waiting a long time too. To tell you how I feel."
"No…it can't be…did you accidentally go to the wrong room?"
"These were warm when I got them." Fuutarou opens the bag of yakisoba and offers some to her. "They're kind of cold now because I've been waiting on you. You gave me the coupon, remember?"
"You…kept…"
"Yeah, because I hoped we could eat these together."
At that, Yotsuba flinches, and feels herself blushing. She sees Fuutarou's cheeks blushing at the same time. She feels a sudden embarrassment that she has never felt around Fuutarou before, but that pales in comparison to the shock and panic that she is feeling. Her hands are trembling.
"Just so we're on the same page…" says Fuutarou. "Now that you know how I feel…"
"Sorry, but no!"
Fuutarou freezes, and Yotsuba hears a dry gasp from the back of his throat.
"Hello? Uesugi-san…is anybody there?" The sight of Fuutarou in panic causes Yotsuba to be momentarily distracted from her shock, and she waves her hand in front of his face.
Fuutarou nervously squeezes out a response. "I worked up a lot of courage to come here. I wasn't expecting such a quick answer."
"Uesugi-san, this isn't right. You deserve to be with someone much better than me. One of my sister-"
"I'm not asking your sister."
Fuutarou steps forward, moving closer to her. She can tell his confidence is resurfacing. Her anxiety has already been creeping up, and this causes it to spike. She begins trembling. Her stomach feels like it is being twisted in knots.
"I'm asking you. I'm asking what you want," he says with a forceful tone. She knows this tone. She knows it very well. This is the tone he uses to politely but firmly scold his students when they repeat the same mistake more than once, and she was typically the culprit. This is far from the first time he has directed this tone at her, and it normally makes her happy. Happy that he is so patient and gentle with an idiot like her. But this time it doesn't make her happy. It makes her scared.
He is asking a question that she is not allowed to answer.
"You said 'six years'…" she says meekly. She grabs onto the cloth of her sweater with her trembling, sweaty hands. Her voice shakes as she speaks. "You know, don't you? Did your old tutor tell you? Or was it Itsuki?"
"No one told me. It's just a guess. I figured it out when we were in Kyoto…" says Fuutarou.
"Then you know why!" blurts Yotsuba. "You know why you should be in someone else's room! I broke our promise! Forget the past! Forget me! I broke our promise, so you should be with someone that deserves you now! My sisters, Nino, Ichika, Miku, they have been working so hard! I haven't done anything, because I don't deserve-"
Tears are streaming down her face as she says this. Her voice gets louder and more shaky as she goes. But she is cut off by Fuutarou grabbing her ribbon, as he has done hundreds of times before when she says something stupid.
"Idiot. You couldn't be more wrong. None of your sisters have done even one percent of what you have done for m-"
Fuutarou is cut off as Yotsuba yanks free from his grasp. Her ribbon, pulled untied, trails from Fuutarou's hand as Yotsuba sprints out of the room. Tears are gushing from her eyes now.
"I'm sorry, Uesugi-san!" She calls out, without looking back.
He won't be able to catch me. There's no way. I should be able to get to the other side of campus and lose him.
Hopefully he will just go to a different room.
Run.
Faster.
…
How is this happening?
I can't let this happen.
I can't steal him. I can't hurt my sisters. I have to live for their sake.
I can't tear us apart again.
It can't be me.
Yotsuba looks back. She is proven right. He can't catch her.
She reaches the edge of campus, turns down a street, and puts every ounce of her athletic ability into her legs.
I can't hurt my sisters. I have to get away. I can't let him catch me.
Fuutarou does not catch her.
