Chapter 1
Being Framed Blows
Percy's brilliant green eyes snapped open with a start, his body throwing himself up into a sitting position. Ragged gasps and breaths came out of him, he could literally feel his heart pounding inside of him. He groaned and raised a hand to his forehead. Startled by the amount of heat and the amount of sweat he felt.
Something was wrong, his blood curdled. He could feel every muscle of his contract as if he had been shocked full of electricity. A sense of unending and devilish dread overcame him. He hadn't felt this way since… since Tartarus. He rose to his feet, a shiver overtaking him as a sharp cool breeze fluttered unnaturally through his cabin.
He didn't even bother to throw a shirt or shoes on as he stepped out of his cabin into the cool crisp night. He looked around, his heart still beating unnaturally fast. Nothing seemed amiss as he gazed about at all of the cabins, the stars and moon still twinkling brightly overhead. It made it seem like nothing was wrong.
It was quiet. Too quiet. Almost as if he was on autopilot he let his legs carry him, his heart pounding louder and louder with each step. He felt both cold and hot at the same time. The entire time he was thinking that something didn't feel quite right.
He barely noticed himself walking through the forest, the sharp stinging of rocks and branches against his bare feet barely registered in his mind as he continued forward. Eventually he came to a clearing that was unnaturally bright and his blood froze.
Looking at the individual laying on the ground, tears immediately sprung to his eyes and he violently gasped.
Laying there in a pool of their own blood, was… was… Annabeth. He let out a guttural scream, he barely noticed the roars of monsters and creatures around him in the forest. The ground visibly shook underneath the force of his anger.
He stepped forward and dropped to his knees, barely registering the pool of blood he had just sank into. Pulling Annabeth into his arms he gazed at her angelic but pale face. Her eyes were closed, with speckles of crimson blood splattered all over her face, her princess blonde curls were dull, like hay. She felt cold to the touch, as if she had been dead for a while.
"No… no… no, this can't be happening…" Tears fell down in waves and his vision got blurry as he stared at the love of his life. Dead in his hands. "This is a nightmare, it's a dream." He gasped to himself, his heart beating even faster if that was possible, it felt like it might explode.
"This can't be real." He croaked, but everything felt surreal. He unleashed another wail, the ground reverberating around him. He had no idea how long he held Annabeth before he began to study her and the surrounding area. Her throat had been violently slashed open. She was still wearing her camp shirt and the shorts she wore to bed. She must have been dragged out by something, he looked around, her ivory sword nowhere to be found. He looked down at her hand and his eyes widened in horror. Her hand was loosely clutching a knife that was completely covered in blood. Making it seem like she had taken her own life. Which was impossible. There was no way she would do that.
None of this made any sense. This had to be a dream.
Right? He desperately thought to himself.
With shaky hands he gently pried the knife from Annabeth's cold dead hand. He shifted his body so that Annabeth's head was gently resting in his lap before he raised the knife to his left palm. It was the only way for him to make sure it was a dream.
It had to be.
Otherwise…
Percy didn't want to think about it as the tears still fell down in waves. His heartbeat, his breathing, Annabeth's cold skin and the blood all felt so real.
But it just couldn't be. It couldn't. After everything they had gone through together, this couldn't be the end.
He placed the blade against his palm and roughly glided the sharp bronze against his skin. He gritted his teeth and winced at the burning sensation of his skin being sliced open. His eyes widened as he watched his own blood fall gently down his hands and to the ground, mingling with Annabeth's.
No.
Percy gave a primal scream, a shockwave exploding around him sending rock and debris everywhere around him. Trees were dismantled and broken in half, he heard wails of pain from the tree nymphs and monsters but paid them no attention.
He jumped as her eyes snapped open and she sat up, the color began to return to her skin. Percy nearly leapt out of his skin. What the Hades…
"Annabeth…" He said weakly, unbelievably confused. She had just been dead, and he couldn't help but feel like he was completely missing something.
She turned to him, but rather than her sharp gray eyes, they were yellow, pale yellow. A wicked smirk came over her face before the yellow faded and was replaced with her normal gray ones as she crawled to her feet. Percy mirrored her action.
Percy was instantly on guard, holding the bronze knife in front of him. "You're not Annabeth."
Percy thought of the Eidolon that had taken over him and his friends on the Argo II years ago. That's what this was, it had to be.
She smiled wickedly, evilly and a chill crept up Percy's spine. Percy had fought all types of creatures, gods, Titans, and even seen a few Primordial's. But never once had Percy ever laid his eyes upon true evil like he was now, the feeling made him incredibly sick. He could feel the pure evil that was inside Annabeth right now.
"What gave me away?" She asked. Percy felt another chill run throughout his body. Whatever this was, it's voice was exactly the same as Annabeth's. The Eidolon, according to the others, was hollow and raspy. Whatever this thing was, Percy had never seen it before.
His eyes trailed down to the brutal gash on the love of his life's throat. Percy wanted to break down again and start crying even more, after all they had been through, she was just gone. But whatever this was, it clearly was responsible for whatever happened. His left hand clenched in rage, he faintly could feel his own blood dripping in his fingers, but ignored it.
Percy was going to get his revenge. That's all he wanted now.
"Oh," She gave what appeared to be an innocent look. But it still looked cold and wrong. She raised her hand to her throat, an ugly orange glow seemed to emanate from it before vanishing. When the light faded, the wound was completely gone. But it didn't change anything, Annabeth was still gone. He knew that deep in his heart. "There, better?" She asked with a grin.
Percy snarled. "I'm going to kill you, whatever you are." His tone was ice.
Annabeth's cold face shifted into a smile. "I'm counting on you trying buddy boy. But that little pig sticker…" She pointed at the knife in Percy's hands, the one still soaked in Annabeth's blood. "That won't do it."
"I'll be the judge of that." Percy stepped forward but Annabeth merely raised her hands.
"Woah, woah. You don't want to stab this pretty little thing do you?" She gestured to herself and Percy felt his rage boiling over. "I mean, this is the corpse of the love of your life, isn't it?" It mocked. Percy scowled, but froze. He really didn't want to harm Annabeth, even though she was gone. But he felt the daughter of Athena wouldn't have minded if he got justice by killing the thing that killed her.
"I mean," She looked down and leered at herself. Percy felt distinctly uncomfortable by that. "Look at me," She ran her hands down her body. Groping herself and licking her lips. Her eyes flickered to Percy's. Percy clenched his fists even tighter at the way this thing was desecrating Annabeth's body.
Percy stepped forward, ready to stab this thing despite it being Annabeth. "Don't you want to know why I did this?" Percy froze as Annabeth began chuckling soundly, as if the thought of killing someone and torturing their love was the greatest joy imaginable.
"Not particularly, I just want you dead." Percy growled.
"Fine, fine. Spoilsport you know, that's alright. Don't want to ruin the grand reveal too early anyways." Percy grit his teeth, this thing… whatever it was, was merely toying with him. Playing with him like he was a pawn.
"But do you want to hear how she died?" Percy wanted to shake his head but he was suddenly frozen in place. Desperately he tried to move, but he couldn't. "I took over her body, but I let her stay somewhat in control as I placed the blade to her throat." She smirked evilly again and Percy couldn't help but just listen as he was frozen in place. "She begged, and she screamed for you. For you too save her, but you never did. The last thought that went through her mind before I slit her throat with her own hands was that you failed her, just like you've failed everyone else in your miserable little life."
Roaring in rage, Percy felt himself regain control of his limbs. Lunging forward, desperate to drive the knife into whatever this was, because it definitely wasn't his Annabeth. Her eyes flickered to yellow and a smirk flashed across her face before a flash of distress overcame her body. "Percy!" She shrieked desperately. "Don't do this, it was just a…" She never got to finish as the blade pierced through her chest and into her heart. She gasped and shuddered involuntarily, the yellow fading from her eyes. Percy smirked, hoping that he had actually killed the thing.
Blood dribbled from her lips. "Why? Percy, why?" She gasped in her voice. It was so convincing that Percy almost thought it was her, black smoke began leaking from her mouth. A thick lifelike black cloud flew from her lips for a couple seconds before completely vanishing into the night sky. Percy watched it leave and scowled, whatever that thing was, it was still out there.
Numbly, he watched Annabeth's body collapse to the forest floor. The fake look of horror still etched on her face, the color draining from her skin and eyes rapidly as she returned to the same dead state she was in when Percy had originally found her.
He heard the gasps of outrage, screams of terror and fear behind him. "Percy, what the Hades are you doing?" A dull ringing pierced his ears, he tuned out the sounds as he thought about getting his revenge. He needed to hunt this thing down and kill it, it wouldn't escape his wrath.
Percy spun around to see the horrified faces of a bunch of people standing there, as if the entire camp had gotten out of bed and come here. Not only that, but they were all looking at him like he had actually killed Annabeth. He wanted to roll his eyes, did they not see the pool of blood that was already on the ground.
His eyes snapped to Chiron's; the centaur was looking at him, before looking at Annabeth. He looked truly stunned. His mouth was opened wide in shock, he was at a loss for words. The crowd of demigods were all dead silent. He could see the looks of anger, pain, and the tears flowing down everyone's faces. But through the haze of his anger, their faces were just a blur. It wasn't until Jason stepped forward that his focus sharpened to actually take note of his surroundings.
Percy's eyes narrowed as Jason drew his gold gladius. The son of Jupiter's electric blue eyes pulsed with lightning, his face was red, whether from anger, shock, or sadness, Percy was unsure. "Put the knife down, Percy." He said hesitantly, as if he couldn't believe his own words. Piper stepped up next to him, tears were trailing down her cheeks in waves as she stared at Annabeth's dead body in horror.
He gave a cold chuckle in return. They had to be joking, right? There was no way they could have actually believed that he would harm Annabeth, not after all they had been through together. Not after all that he had done. "She was already dead when I got here." He spat in rage, the ground rumbled dangerously around them all. The crowd muttered and murmured uneasily, a couple of them falling to the ground from the force.
"You can't honestly believe that I would…" Percy snarled, he could feel an incredible amount of liquid around him begging to be controlled in his rage. He tried to even his breathing and steady his heart as the ground shook faster. If he didn't get himself under control he could easily destroy camp. But he just couldn't reign in his emotions. The love of his life was dead, her murderer mocking him in his face and now self-righteous Jason and company were acting like he murdered her.
Yes, they had watched him drive the blade into Annabeth's heart and yes, whatever controlling her had acted like Annabeth when he stabbed her.
He paused for a second before freezing.
Oh shit.
Percy raised his hands placatingly. "Alright, let me explain…" He was still angry, but maybe less at Jason and the rest of them than he should be. He could feel tears appearing in his eyes but tried not to think about it. They needed to let him explain.
Piper stepped forward and flicked her hair over her shoulder. The daughter of Venus looked incredibly tired, and even with the tears trailing down her face looked flawless. Percy was practically mesmerized by her. "You're unwell Percy, please." She pleaded. "Put the knife down." For a moment all he wanted to do was obey her every command.
He shook his head and snapped himself from her trance. Charmspeak, he spat in his head.
"No." He snarled, Piper looked stunned at his outright refusal. There weren't too many beings that she couldn't control with her words, even Gaea had fallen to her charmspeak.
His eyes gazed around as he looked at everything. He was covered in blood, holding a bloody knife, standing in front of Annabeth's body. Which he had just stabbed, it really didn't look good for him. He reached into the pocket of his shorts and uncapped Riptide, the pen elongating into a beautiful three foot bronze xiphos. "Back up." He snarled, holding the blade outward. The crowd backed up immediately, with looks of fear on their faces.
They obviously thought he was unhinged and broken, he needed to use that to his advantage. He needed to get out of here. The only one who didn't back up was Jason, even Piper shivered in fear and stepped away from him.
Percy gave Jason a wicked grin as the son of Jupiter's hands sparkled with electricity. "Time to put the rumors to rest, eh Jason?" He growled coldly.
"Percy please, stop this. I know this isn't you," Jason pleaded, and Percy could tell that Jason was actually both sad and afraid, tears were leaking from the corners of his eyes.
But if he stood down, he definitely would be taken to Olympus and subjected to the council. Athena would have him tortured to insanity or killed outright, she wouldn't let him explain. She hated him simply for existing, this would merely be proof that she had been right all along.
He couldn't get justice for Annabeth if he was captured. It was clear they wouldn't let him explain.
"Sorry Jace. No can do, none of you will believe me. Which means, I've got to get out of here." He waved his hand and the air around the two of them sparkled as the temperature dropped drastically enough where both of them were able to see their breath. Ice began forming around the two of them and Jason shivered.
His eyes pulsated and a bolt of lightning dropped from the sky with a thunderous roar. The ice he had created shattered as lightning exploded through it. It hit Jason's blade before being launched at Percy. Percy ran straight toward it, Riptide absorbed the bolt as Riptide collided with Jason's blade in a clash of sparks, the lightning pulsating between the two weapons before diminishing quickly.
Their blows and strikes were so quick they were almost blurs of motion, the crowd watched in awe as the son of Jupiter and son of Poseidon clashed. There had always been murmurs surrounding the two on which one was stronger, which one would win in a fight between them. Now they all got to witness it first hand, it was both epic and horrible to watch.
Piper meanwhile was watching in horror, her best friend lay dead just a few feet away from her and the love of her life, who had just murdered her was currently fighting her own boyfriend. What was she supposed to do? They were moving way too quickly, if she tried to intervene she could potentially get Jason killed, or hurt herself. But not only that, she was incredibly confused, she could still feel the intense love that Percy felt for Annabeth. Something was obviously wrong, perhaps the son of Poseidon was telling the truth. Maybe something else was at play, regardless, Percy seemed incredibly unhinged, and needed to be stopped. Jason was the only one who could possibly do that.
Jason could barely keep up, Percy's movements were so incredibly quick and precise that Jason wasn't able to go on the offensive, forced to defend himself or be struck down. Percy was an incredible swordfighter and even though Jason knew he too was a master, Percy seemed to be on an entirely different level. Several times he had tried to control the winds or call down bolts of lightning, but they hardly even seemed to affect Percy. The wind quickly dissipated and the lightning barely even registered in Percy's mind.
Thinking he saw an opening he pushed Percy's sword away from him and brought his blade downward in a strike that would have sunk deep into Percy's shoulder. Somehow Percy caught the strike with the hilt of the knife he was holding and stopped him in place. Jason's eyes widened, how did Percy have the strength to stop him with only a knife? It should have been impossible.
With a simple twist, he sent Jason's gladius flying. Without missing a beat he slammed Riptide's hilt into Jason's nose with a sickening crunch. Jason gasped in pain as blood fell from his nostrils at a rapid pace as he collapsed onto his back.
Jason raised his hands in surrender. "Percy, please…" He pleaded. But if Percy had killed Annabeth, why on Earth would Percy give a shit about killing him, the son of Poseidon stood over him. Riptide at his side, not even preparing for a strike.
Jason heard a desperate cry and watched through the hazy tears as Piper lunged at him, Katropis flashing bronze in the night. He watched stunned as Percy's body moved so quickly it was a blur, he dodged to the side, getting on the outside of Piper's arm. Like a viper, his hand latched onto Piper's wrist and twisted. He heard the snap and the cry of pain come from Piper as Percy effortlessly snapped her wrist. Rage flooded him as he watched Katropis clatter to the ground.
Without a word Percy kicked Piper in the side, sending the daughter of Aphrodite sprawling into Jason with a thud. They both groaned and cried out as they slammed into each other.
Percy definitely felt bad, he really wasn't trying to break Piper's wrist. But his strength had gotten away from him there, he looked at the two apologetically as they scrambled to get to their feet.
Percy ducked his head back as a hammer flew so close to his face that he could have kissed it. He immediately took a couple steps back and looked at the enraged face of Leo Valdez, his free hand and hair had burst into flames.
The son of Hephaestus took several desperate and wild swings at Percy, but he effortlessly dodged. Leo had never been much of a fighter, using his incredible intelligence and craftsmanship skills to defeat any foe. He felt flames hit him, but the son of Hephaestus must have forgotten he was heat resistant. Even lava had barely done anything to him.
Dodging another wild swing of a hammer, he swept Leo's legs out from under him and placed the tip of Riptide at the man's chest. He watched Leo gulp nervously. "Come on Percy, you wouldn't…" He paused and Percy could literally feel what was happening in slow motion.
He felt Jason's body launching toward him in the air, he was weaponless, most likely just trying to keep Percy from killing Leo. Which he obviously wasn't going to do, but Jason clearly didn't know that.
Percy turned and slammed his bare foot into the son of Jupiter's face, watching his eyes roll into the back of his head as he sprawled to the ground at Percy's feet.
He idly heard the draw of a bow behind him.
"Don't move, Percy." Percy froze, his eyes turning toward Chiron's voice. His mentor was looking at him differently. Not like he was a murderer, nor like he was disappointed. Percy couldn't read the look on his face, it made Percy incredibly nervous so he dropped both of his weapons without a word. He knew Chiron wouldn't miss.
The centaur's dark eyes flashed. "Walk toward the big house." Percy didn't move a muscle. "NOW." He bellowed in such a demanding voice Percy was obliged to obey. "The rest of you, go to bed. Do not leave your cabins, or the consequences will not be pleasant." He idly watched Leo and Piper scramble to Jason, their eyes glaring at Percy as he slowly walked past them. He sent his own venomous glare at them, causing both to flinch.
Percy silently walked through the forest and toward the big house. Only Chiron followed, the rest of the demigods didn't follow and silently dispersed back to their cabins. They knew better than to disobey this order from Chiron, especially with the look on his face.
He could feel the centaur's eyes still trained on his back, the arrow on his bow still notched. For some reason Percy could feel everything behind him despite not being able to actually see it. The only sound made was Chiron's hooves softly thudding against the ground.
After what seemed like an eternity they finally made it to the big house. At Chiron's look he stepped onto the porch and entered.
Percy turned around to see Chiron slinging his bow over his shoulder, the arrow vanishing into the quiver strapped onto his back. The trainer of heroes looked incredibly old at that moment, every wrinkle and crinkle visible on his weary face. His eyes showed his age as he looked at Percy sadly.
"Chiron, you have to believe me when I tell you, I didn't kill Annabeth." Tears trailed down his face in waves as he thought of her. He would never talk to her again, never feel her hands or lips again.
Chiron regarded him for a moment. "I know, child. I need you to explain exactly what happened…"
He was cut off as a black cloud quickly entered the space. "Percy, run! Don't let it near you." Chiron cried out desperately as he pulled out his bow once more, how he planned on shooting a cloud? Percy was unsure.
Percy didn't have time to react before it shoved its way into his throat, he coughed and sputtered for a few moments as the entirety of the black cloud entered his body. He suddenly froze and stood straight up, his body tensing as Percy's face morphed into a euphoric expression. "Such power," He licked his lips as Percy looked down at his hands. As if he hadn't felt the rush before.
"You can't be here," Chiron whispered with a tremble. "The camp border protects against your kind."
Percy's eyes changed from their usual sea green to pale yellow. "Oh Chiron," He said with a chuckle. "You think those puny protections would work against someone like me?" The smugness in his tone clearly evident.
"Be gone, demon." Chiron ordered sternly pointing the bow at his pupil, Percy's face merely shifted into a look of evil glee and he chuckled good naturedly.
"You know that won't hurt me, it will only kill dear old Percy." Chiron hesitantly lowered his bow.
"What do you want? To kill Percy?" Chiron asked, his tone broken.
"No, no. Percy here is needed after all. I just can't have anyone believing his innocence, and let me tell you, killing the ancient trainer of heroes will be just the cherry on top of this marvelous evening. First, Annabeth Chase. Let me tell you, her fear and pain was delicious. I wish I could do it again." Chiron's face morphed into a look of rage as the demon licked his lips
He pulled Riptide free from his pocket and studied it. Watching with glee as Chiron paled drastically. "Such an interesting weapon." Percy muttered, his eyes never changing from yellow as an evil expression overtook him. He uncapped the weapon and the blade sprung free, having no idea its master was under someone else's control.
He stepped forward but instantly froze as the door behind them creaked open. "I'll get to you in a moment, dear centaur, seems like someone wants to interrupt." He whispered with a smirk and snapped his fingers, watching with delight as Chiron's body stiffened. The demon spun around to see the bouncy brunette curls and brilliantly beautiful golden eyes of Hazel Levesque.
"Hazel, no." Chiron bellowed. "Run."
"Percy? You're not Percy, you're dead." She snapped with wide eyes before noticing his yellow eyes. "Eep!" She shrieked and jumped back, her hand reaching for the golden spatha sheathed at her side. But she wasn't fast enough, Chiron watched helplessly as Percy drove Riptide straight through Hazel's stomach with that cruel smirk still plastered on his face.
Hazel gasped and looked at Percy in shock as she collapsed to the ground.
Percy's face suddenly contorted in a look of pain, his body shifted and twitched as if he was fighting an invisible force, he collapsed to his knees. "No." He gasped out. "Impossible…" With a roar of pain Percy's head snapped upward. With a scream the same black cloud was expelled from his lips. It took several moments before the last wisps of smoke left his mouth and he collapsed into a heap.
Chiron, now free from being frozen in place, could only stare in shock.
Percy's eyes snapped open and he gasped. Fresh tears came from his eyes as he crawled to Hazel. "No… no, Hazel. I'm sorry, I didn't…" He trailed off as he pulled the trembling and bleeding girl into his arms, he hadn't been strong enough to fight it off, and because of that… Hazel was going to die too. It was all his fault.
Hazel's golden eyes looked up at him, shining with something Percy couldn't place. He shivered as he saw adoration and tears in the young girl's eyes. Her form had stilled under his touch, but he could still see the rapid rise and fall of her chest as she desperately tried to breath. Riptide was still embedded in her stomach and Percy knew, without a doubt there was nothing that either himself or Chiron could do to save the girl in time.
"Hazel, please, hold on." Percy pleaded, leaning down and pressing his forehead against hers. "I didn't…"
She reached up weakly and placed a hand on his cheek. "I know Percy. I know." She rasped out weakly. "I know you weren't under control, that was a demon…" She suddenly coughed violently and Percy barely even registered the blood splatter that flew from her lips and covered his face, tears dripping down his cheeks and splashing against Hazel. "I love you, Percy." She said weakly.
He wailed. "No Hazel, I love you too." He brought her up closer. There was no way any of this could be real, he couldn't be losing the love of his life and the girl he considered to be his younger sister the same night. By the same fucker's hands, and his own. He had been too weak to stop it. Percy looked into her golden eyes one more time, watching as they dulled before his eyes.
"Don't blame your…" She trailed off, with a gasp the rapid rise and fall of her chest froze. The remaining light leached from her eyes and Percy sobbed even louder than before as he felt Hazel's soul leave her body.
No, no, no. This couldn't be happening. He thought desperately. None of this was real. He held her closer as his body racked with more sobs. "Percy…" He barely registered Chiron's voice. He rose without a word. "Percy, you must not do anything rash." Chiron called after him desperately, but Percy wasn't listening. His heart was shattered, his body was numb and he couldn't even think through the pain. Two of the most important people in his life, gone, in an instant. And Hazel, by his own hands. He wanted to kill himself as he tried to feel through the haze.
Vaguely he watched the door to the big house open one more time, to see the horrified expression of Frank Zhang. The son of Mars looked at Percy stunned, his eyes darting between Percy, Riptide and Hazel rapidly.
"I'll kill you." Frank roared, he lunged at Percy. He dodged, shoving the hulking demigod to the side effortlessly, barely registering that he had sent him through a wall. He distantly heard Chiron call out for him once more but he ignored it. He grabbed Riptide, pulling it free from Hazel. With shaky hands he capped it and put it back into his pocket before closing his eyes tightly in pain. How would he ever be able to look at his sword again, knowing that it had killed Hazel?
He shut his eyes tightly in pain.
He let loose one last ear piercing sob, the foundations of the big house shuddering from the force as he vanished into a salty sea breeze.
