I recently started watching the anime and fell in love. So, I wanted to make a sweet one shot. I hope everyone enjoys.
"This is excessive," Aizawa complained even though he knew it was falling on deaf ears. His left arm was wrapped around Hizashi, who had a death grip on his forearm. Nemuri was being a lot more gentle on his other side. "It's not that big of a deal."
"Your ankle and leg are broken," Hizashi stated. Aizawa grunted in annoyance because he clearly knew that his leg was broken. A villain had knocked him out of the air, and when he tried to adjust his trajectory and land, his leg went one way and his ankle the other. Both completely folded under his weight.
"It's my turn to watch Eri today," Aizawa insisted. Over the school week, Eri would hang out with Nezu and private tutors with teachers checking on her throughout the week. After school, Aizawa would help her train to control her quirk for an hour and a half before he turned around and trained Hitoshi. Eri would usually tag along with them if not go to get dinner with another teacher.
During the weekend, the teachers took turns watching over Eri. Hizashi usually spent half the day with her. And Nemuri was probably teaching her all kinds of bad habits. Aizawa didn't see Eri so much over the weekend, but with nothing to do, he volunteered to watch the young girl for the day.
Then a small gang of villains decided to rob a street worth of stores in one go. Two streets over from UA. Aizawa was convinced the small gang stumbled in from another city. Maybe even another country. They had no clue what they were doing. And they certainly weren't expecting that many pro heroes to arrive at once.
But it was just his luck that one of them would have a reflection quirk, and that would cause Hizashi's voice quirk to bounce back and slam into Aizawa. Hence the awkward, bone-breaking landing. With the chaos of the attack, Aizawa wasn't going to tie up the paramedics when Recovery Girl was right there at the school.
And speaking of the youthful heroine, he heard her cane tapping off the ground as they turned the corner. Recovery Girl raised an eyebrow and spoke, "I was just on the way to help the paramedics."
"Think you could give a kiss for the road?" Hizashi asked. Aizawa rolled his eyes. Recovery Girl walked toward them and then motioned with her head. Aizawa grumbled as he was carried like he was a child into the teacher's lounge.
The two pros laid him down on the couch, and a kiss was given to his leg. The pain in his leg immediately faded, and the ache in his ankle melted down into a slight discomfort. He sighed in relief, even as the exhaustion hit him. Recovery Girl looked over him, "Feeling better?"
"Thank you," Aizawa replied. He tried to sit up, but two hands and a cane stopped him. "I'm supposed to watch Eri."
"Your ankle isn't healed all the way," Recovery Girl began. Her hand ran down Aizawa's leg before resting on his ankle. Despite himself, he winced in pain as her hand touched his ankle. "It's still sprained, so you need to stay off of it."
"And you need to rest," Nemuri added. "Eri is going to want to run around and be active today."
"Which you aren't on a good day," Hizashi said. Aizawa glared at all of them. "Do you want your sleeping bag?"
"No."
"Oh don't pout. Do you want a blanket?"
"No."
"Coffee?"
"..."
"He's so cute when he pouts," Nemuri commented as she threw a blanket at Aizawa. "Just sleep, okay? We'll take good care of Eri."
"Fine," Aizawa muttered as he laid his head back. His eyes moved to Recovery Girl. "Thank you again."
Recovery Girl nodded to him and left the room. Hizashi walked toward the fridge and opened it. He came back while holding onto a glass bottle. It was put down on the table near Aizawa. Nemuri grabbed the blanket from Aizawa as he struggled with it, and she laid it over him with a wink.
"I hate you both," Aizawa grumbled. His eyes moved to the bottle. "What is that?"
"Iced coffee," Hizashi answered with a smile.
"What the hell is that?" Aizawa asked as he lifted his head.
"Something I've been wanting you to try," Hizashi said. He moved to grab a water bottle and place it on the table as well. "You just sleep until dinner, okay? I'll come wake you up after that, so you have the whole day to do your favorite thing."
"We will take good care of Eri," Nemuri promised.
"Just don't tell her I'm hurt," Aizawa said. "And don't take your eyes off of her for too long."
"We have this handled," Hizashi promised. "You just get some sleep."
Aizawa sighed as he watched the two of them walk out of the teacher's lounge. He laid his head back and stared at the ceiling. For once, he wasn't tired. Well, other than the healing with recovery girl. But he had taken sleeping pills the night before to actually sleep, so he would be wide awake to spend the day with Eri.
He had really been looking forward to it.
"Hey Little Listener," Hizashi greeted as he looked down at Eri. The young girl looked up at him with sleepy eyes. Hizashi knelt down by her. "Uh oh, you're going to have bags under your eyes like Eraser at this rate. Bad night?"
Eri nodded and mumbled, "Yes, Uncle Yamada."
"Well, that's okay! We're going to have a fun day today," Hizashi promised. Eri frowned as she looked around the room. Nemuri had gotten Eri up and dressed for the day. Then, she stepped out to find out exactly what they were going to do for the day. Hizashi was busy making breakfast.
"Aunt Nemuri was here," Eri began.
"She left for just a little bit," Hizashi said as he turned toward the mixing bowl in front of him. He had introduced Eri to pancakes, and she loved them. Shota had seemed disgusted by it, but who cared what the adult thought when the kid loved it? "She'll be back soon, Little Listener."
"Where is Eraser?" Eri questioned as she rubbed her eyes again. Hizashi got her a cup of water.
"There was a villain attack, and he got hurt," Hizashi said. Eri's eyes widened. "Hey! He's fine! Just a little tired from being healed, but he's fine."
"He got hurt?" Eri asked.
"But he's fine," Hizashi assured her. "Why don't you go sit down? I'm going to make pancakes."
Eri mumbled something that Hizashi couldn't hear. Before he could ask, she walked toward the living room. He focused back on making the pancakes. A hum left him as he mixed the batter and put it in the pan.
Hizashi had added some cut-up fruit to the batter, and as he flipped it over, he debated if he should add the smiley face with the syrup or wait for Nemuri. Sure, she was better at the whole art thing, but this was going to be abstract. Eri wouldn't care if it was uniform. She would just want a beautiful smiley face.
Hizashi finished the pancakes and loaded up three plates. He took extra careful time to make the smiley face with the syrup on the pancakes. The door opened behind him, and he turned to look at Nemuri. There was a frown on her face.
"Don't leave the door open when a child is in here," Nemuri said.
"I didn't," Hizashi said as he stuck his tongue out. He put the three plates on the table. "Breakfast is ready, Eri!"
There was no answer from Eri. Hizashi blinked for a moment and walked toward the couch. After peeking over, he saw Eri had left her cup of water on the table, but she was nowhere in sight. Hizashi slowly looked at Nemuri.
"You did not," Nemuri began.
"Maybe she's playing hide and seek," Hizashi began as he looked around the empty living room and kitchen. Nemuri walked toward the bathroom and then the bedroom. She came back with wide eyes.
"She's not in here," Nemuri said. Her head shot to the side. "The door..."
"Shiiii... okay. This is fine. She has little legs, so she couldn't get that far. She probably went to see Midoriya or Mirio," Hizashi said as he felt panic flare up inside him.
"You weren't supposed to let her out of your sight," Nemuri said.
"I was making her pancakes," Hizashi said. "And, you said you would only be a minute."
"You know that I never take an actual minute," Nemuri argued back. "Look, let's worry about this later. We do not want Shota to know we lost Eri. He'll just nag us about how we're irresponsible."
"Alright. I'll find Midoriya," Hizashi decided. "You get Mirio."
Somewhere in Aizawa's half-lucid sleep, he heard the door to the teacher's lounge open. His brow furled slightly as he turned his head to the side. It didn't feel like he had been asleep long enough for it to be dinner time. Not that he thought he would be asleep that long anyway.
But none of the teachers would be in the teacher's lounge. Unless Recovery Girl was coming back to lecture him after checking on him. Or maybe even Hizashi to give him breakfast? But he didn't smell food. Aizawa finally decided to turn his head back toward the couch and try to fall back asleep.
The sound of a zipper moving caused his eyes to snap open. He turned his head and focused on the figure across the room. They were standing over his discarded sleeping bag and looking inside. Aizawa spoke, "Eri?"
Eri jumped, and she whirled around. Her eyes widened, and she ran to his side. Aizawa grunted as she launched herself onto the couch and into him. Aizawa spoke, "I thought you were supposed to be with Yamada and Nemuri."
"They said you were hurt," Eri mumbled as she looked up at him. Her gaze moved all over the blanket like she was trying to pinpoint the injury.
"I broke my leg and ankle, but Recovery Girl took care of it," Aizawa said as he carefully sat up. He pulled the blanket back to show both of his legs. "See, my ankle is fine. It's just sprained."
"Sprained?" Eri repeated as she crawled to the other side of the couch and tilted her head.
"It means that I can walk on it, but it hurts," Aizawa said. "Like I said, Recovery Girl took care of the worst of it. Remember when I told you that her quirk makes the person who is healed more tired."
"So you're tired. Not hurt," Eri asked as she looked back at Aizawa.
"Just tired," Aizawa confirmed as he slowly laid back on the couch. "Why are you here, though?"
"Uncle Yamada said you were hurt, but he wouldn't tell me what was wrong. Just that you were fine," Eri explained as she crawled back over to the other side of the couch. Without warning, she plopped herself down between the couch and Aizawa. He looked at her in surprise and frowned as he noticed the bags under her eyes.
"Did you get any sleep?" Aizawa asked.
"Nightmare," Eri mumbled.
"You should have gotten me or Uncle Yamada," Aizawa said as he scooted away slightly, so she would have more room to lay down. Eri didn't hesitate to squirm under the blanket and lay next to him.
"I tried to," Eri mumbled as she buried her face in Aizawa's shoulder. "You weren't there."
"Hmm. It must have been during the villain attack," Aizawa said. "I'm sorry, Eri. But I'm here now. Unless you want to sleep in the sleeping bag. You looked ready to crawl into it earlier."
"No. I only looked there because you said to always look for that when I was scared," Eri mumbled as she relaxed against him. Aizawa adjusted the blanket to lay over her.
"Do you want to talk about your nightmare?" Aizawa asked. Eri shrugged against him. "Have you eaten breakfast yet?"
"Don't want to eat," Eri mumbled as she shook her head. Aizawa understood immediately. He had his fair share of nightmares that left him unable to stomach anything for at least a few hours after waking. Aizawa shifted and reached into his pocket. He pulled out a jelly packet and opened it. After handing it over to Eri, she regarded it curiously. Then, she slurped up some of it.
"Like it?" Aizawa asked. Eri nodded as she took another slurp out of it. Aizawa hid his smile. "You can't have it all the time, but it makes a good meal replacement when you can't bear the thought of eating."
"Do Uncle Yamada and Aunt Nemuri know you're here?" Aizawa asked. Eri averted her gaze and shook her head. "Do you want me to call them and let them know?"
Not that he even should. He warned them not to let Eri out of their sight.
"I want to stay here with you," Eri mumbled.
"All day?" Aizawa asked with an amused tone to his voice. Eri lifted her head and met his eyes. She nodded. "Are you sure?"
Eri took another slurp on the jelly packet and nodded again. She played with the package, "Will Uncle Yamada be mad?"
"He'll be worried about you since you didn't tell them where you were going," Aizawa replied. "They'll be worried because they will think you're in danger."
"But I'm with you," Eri said, and Aizawa felt a small smile come to his face. Eri finished off the jelly packet and settled back in the blanket. "And I don't mind laying here all day. Especially if you're here, Eraser."
"You know you can call me Aizawa, right?" the pro hero asked as he raised an eyebrow. Or was that name too hard to pronounce? It took Eri weeks to get Nemuri right.
"But you said to call you by your hero name at school," Eri mumbled.
"Only when they're are students around, and even then, I don't care if you call me Aizawa or Eraser. It's up to you," Aizawa said.
"Can I call you dad?" Eri asked as she looked up at him. Aizawa felt his heart skip a few beats, and his eyes widened. Eri frowned. "Is that okay?"
"No. No. It's..." Aizawa shut his mouth, and he couldn't stop the smile that came to his face. "It's perfect."
"But you said no," Eri said in confusion.
"I was just surprised," Aizawa said. He couldn't keep the smile off of his face as he studied Eri. She called him dad. And while Aizawa had never had a proper father figure in his life, he was going to be the best one possible for Eri.
"You're sure it's okay?" Eri questioned.
"More than perfect," Aizawa promised. He tucked the blanket a little closer to Eri. "Have I ever told you what a logical ruse is?"
"Midoriya, buddy," Hizashi greeted as he practically threw himself onto the chair next to Midoriya. The kid was staring down at his notebook, but he jumped at the sudden motion
"Oh, Present Mic! What can I do for you, sir?" Midoriya asked.
"Eri hasn't come to visit you this morning, has she?" Hizashi asked as his gaze moved around the dorm. It seemed like most of the students were sleeping in, but he saw a few of them in the kitchen.
"No, sir," Midoriya said with a shake of his head. He pushed his notebook aside and put his full attention on Hizashi. "I thought she was supposed to be with Mr. Aizawa today."
"I'm covering," Hizashi said with a grin. He waved his hand. "There was a little villain attack."
"Is Mr. Aizawa okay?" Midoriya asked immediately.
"Mr. Aizawa is hurt?" Yaoyorozu asked as she seemed to appear at their side. And that got the attention of the rest of the students in the room.
"Woah!" Hizashi said as he threw his hands up quickly. "Eraser is good. He just busted up his ankle and leg, but it's nothing that Recovery Girl can't kiss away. And Midoriya, you know as well as anyone how much her healing exhausts someone. That's why I'm watching Eri for him."
"So," Hizashi said as he clapped his hands together. "Eri and I were going to play hide and seek today, but I don't want her to be hiding for too long, ya dig? So if she was hiding, where would she be?"
"Sir, did you lose Eri?" Yaoyorozu asked.
"What?!" Hizashi exclaimed as his quirk almost slipped out. "What makes you think that?
"Well, you were asking if we had seen Eri," Midoriya said. "Then you mentioned that you were playing hide and seek."
"So you lost Eri during hide and seek?" Todoroki asked. Hizashi knew he had lost control of this situation as the gathered students started to whisper amongst themselves.
"If any of you breathe a word of this to Eraser, I'll expel all of you myself," Hizashi warned.
"Do you need help looking for her, sir?" Asui questioned. Hizashi looked between all of the students and sighed. He hung his head.
"Yeah. Yeah, I do. So let's find her and not say a word to Eraser, got it?"
Aizawa woke the second time to the door of the teacher's lounge opening once again. He rubbed his eyes and glanced to his side. Eri was still curled up by his side with the blanket thrown over her. Her eyes snapped open as he shifted.
"Mic?" Aizawa asked as he tried to crane his head to see.
"Nothing to worry about," Yagi said as he rushed by. He was moving faster now than when he was in his puffed-up All Might form. Aizawa raised an eyebrow in interest as Yagi first stopped by the sleeping bag and peeked inside. Then, he did the same for the cabinets in the room.
"Missing something?" Aizawa asked. He glanced at Eri and winked. She hid her face under the blanket.
"Not at all," Yagi said as he whirled around. He coughed out blood into his elbow a moment later. "Everything is fine!"
"So why were you digging around my sleeping bag?" Aizawa asked. Yagi let out a nervous laugh and started edging toward the door. If he wasn't so nervous, he probably would have noticed Eri hiding under the blanket.
"Oh! Uh! I lost my... notes! I lost my notes," Yagi said.
"And you would have left your notes in my sleeping bag?" Aizawa questioned. Yagi laughed again.
"It seems like such a nice place to take a nap," Yagi began. Aizawa hummed and made sure to sit up enough to make eye contact. Just so Yagi would know he wasn't convinced. "Don't let me interrupt your sleep! Can I get you anything?"
"No," Aizawa sighed. He watched Yagi nod and quickly leave the room. Aizawa rested back on the couch. Eri popped out of the blanket.
"Was that a logical ruse?" Eri questioned. Her gaze moved to Aizawa's capture scarf, and she gently grabbed one end of it.
"Not exactly," Aizawa said as he rubbed his eyes with one hand. He felt Eri playing with the capture scarf, absolutely fascinated by it.
"Are Uncle Yamada and Aunt Nemuri going to fight?" Eri questioned as she kept her gaze on the capture weapon.
"Why would they fight?" Aizawa wondered as he unwound some of the fabric to give her more to play with.
"Bakugo said that his mommy and daddy fought when they lost him one time. And they almost split up," Eri began. "And if Uncle Yamada lost me, then Aunt Nemuri would be mad at him. And I don't want them to split up."
"Split up?"
"Cause they're married," Eri began. Aizawa brought his hand to his mouth to suppress his laugh, and he found his shoulders shaking as he laughed the hardest he had in years. "What's wrong!?"
Aizawa shook his head because he could not stop the laughs that left him even with his hand clamped over his mouth. Tears appeared in his eyes as his stomach hurt. He could just imagine Hizashi's instant denial and his over the top reaction. Not to mention Nemuri's.
A reporter had once asked Hizashi if he was dating anyone. Taken so off guard, Hizashi just offered a chuckle. When that same reporter asked if it was Midnight, the chuckle stopped, and any amusement was lost in a flash as Hizashi told the reporter to get the hell out.
Aizawa had chuckled to himself that day. But today, it was a full belly laugh that he could not stop.
"You're hurt!" Eri cried as she quickly looked down at his ankle.
"I'm fine," Aizawa choked out between laughs. Eri did not look convinced as she lifted the blanket to make sure his ankle was still there. Her eyes shot back to him.
"Your face is red," Eri argued. She climbed toward him and watched him trying to stop the fit of laughter. "You're shaking."
"I'm laughing," Aizawa choked out as he found himself trying to stop and draw breath.
"Aunt Nemuri said you never laugh," Eri said as her eyes widened. "Does it hurt to laugh?"
Aizawa gave himself a few moments to calm down, drawing in deep breaths. His stomach hurt from laughing, and he wiped the blurriness out of his vision. When he was no longer in danger of laughing again, he spoke, "No. It doesn't hurt. Your aunt just doesn't have a good sense of humor."
Eri still looked at him like she was unconvinced, and Aizawa found a smile creeping onto his lips. He couldn't remember the last time he laughed like that. Sure, Hizashi made him laugh but never to the point where there were tears in his eyes.
"Aunt Nemuri and Uncle Yamada aren't married," Aizawa stated, and only years of training as a pro hero made him not laugh again. Maybe he should have kept quiet. Let Eri announce it in school. Or in front of Class 1-A
Hmm.
"But they're my aunt and uncle," Eri began as her eyes widened. Aizawa hesitated because he didn't want to rip apart her world. He offered her a smile as he fully sat up. She sat by him.
"Well, they consider you family. Just like I do," Aizawa said. He thought about his next words. "They're your aunt and uncle but not by blood. Because they choose to be and want you to think of them like that. But if you were uncomfortable calling them that, you don't have to."
"But that doesn't mean they're married," Aizawa continued. He watched carefully as Eri got herself tangled up in the capture scarf.
"Oh. They're brother and sister?" Eri asked. Aizawa snorted.
"Not by blood relation, no. But they are close enough to be more than friends."
"That's confusing," Eri complained.
"Sorry, kiddo. I'm not good with this kind of stuff," Aizawa admitted. "But, an aunt and uncle is an honored title in a family, so as they grew closer to you, they wanted to be like the aunt and uncle you never had."
"So it's a title like teacher is?" Eri questioned.
"Kind of," Aizawa said. "Just know that it means they love you."
"More than you do, dad?" Eri asked. Aizawa felt his throat close up, and his eyes started to burn. Damn allergies.
"Of course not," Aizawa whispered. He cleared his throat. "But they are your aunt and uncle through a title. And it is a very serious position to have. It means they will take really good care of you."
"Are you going somewhere?" Eri asked as she looked up at him.
"I don't plan on it. But for the days I have class or hero work, they'll be there to watch you," Aizawa said. He looked down at her and leaned in close. "Want to hear a secret?"
Eri looked up at him and nodded. Aizawa grabbed the necklace hidden under his shirt. He carefully grabbed the ring and pulled it out from under his shirt. Eri stared at it.
"This will be our secret, so you can't tell anyone. But Uncle Yamada and I are married. We just don't have each others last names to protect us from villains. And that's why I have to hide my ring."
"I won't tell anyone," Eri promised. Aizawa studied her as he put the ring back under his shirt. Then, he carefully freed Eri of the capture weapon and wrapped it back around his shoulders. "I promise!"
"Not even Deku?"
"Not even Deku!"
"Good," Aizawa said. "And remember how I told you about rational deceptions and logical ruses?"
Eri nodded. Aizawa reached into his pocket and grabbed his phone. He called Hizashi and put it on speaker. Aizawa put a hand to his lips, and Eri giggled before she covered her mouth. After five rings, Hizashi answered.
"Hey, Sho. Shouldn't you be sleeping?" Hizashi asked with a nervous laugh.
"Yagi woke me up," Aizawa answered. "How's Eri doing?"
"Oh, she's great! She is doing so great," Hizashi said. Aizawa hummed and looked at Eri. Her shoulders shook as she silently laughed.
"Put her on the phone," Aizawa said. There was silence on the other end. Aizawa cleared his throat. "Hizashi?"
"She's busy!" Hizashi said quickly, and Aizawa winced at the volume. "But she is doing great, Sho. Absolutely great."
"Good. My ankle feels better, so I'll be down to see her after another nap. Meet at the 1-A dorms?"
"Uh, I-"
"I'll text you soon," Aizawa said as he hung up. Eri looked up at him and smiled. Ever since the school festival, she had been smiling more. But, he was starting to realize that she smiled a lot more around him.
"Come on," Aizawa said as he stood. Eri climbed off of the couch and offered a hand. He carefully took her hand and limped toward the door. Eri followed right by his side.
"Where are we going?" Eri asked.
"To watch everyone panic," Aizawa answered. Eri kept her hand wrapped around his fingers. Aizawa opened the door to the teacher's lounge and looked from side to side. When he didn't hear anything, he walked out with Eri.
"Should we tell Uncle Yamada that I'm with you?" Eri asked.
"It wouldn't be a logical ruse if we did that," Aizawa commented as they made their way down the hall.
"But we're just tricking them," Eri protested. She stayed right next to Aizawa and didn't try to rush ahead like she normally did. Aizawa's aching ankle thanked her for her patience.
"To teach them a lesson," Aizawa said. If his ankle wasn't injured, he would have taken her to the rooftop to get an amazing view of the entire school. And to show her his favorite spot. Though he would wrap the capture scarf around her about ten times before they stepped out. Plus she wouldn't be allowed to let go of his hand. But this would do for now.
"What's the lesson?" Eri questioned as they made it to the windows. Aizawa's gaze lazily swept around before noticing Yagi was walking as fast as his legs could take him out of the building, and a stock of green hair rushed to meet him.
"To not let you out of their sight," Aizawa answered. He heard a huff leave Eri, and he ruffled her hair. "You love to run around."
"But you always catch me," Eri said. She frowned and looked down. "Do you have another jelly packet?"
"Are you hungry?" Aizawa questioned as he watched Bakugo join Midoriya and All Might. He could see other figures that he assumed were Class 1-A. It hadn't taken long for Hizashi to call in reinforcements.
Though, Hizashi had to know his students couldn't keep their mouths shut, and this would have made its way back to him. He must have been desperate. Aizawa glanced at his phone. Ah. It was past noon. So Eri would have been missing maybe four or five hours now.
The cops wouldn't have been called yet. Nezu would have been the first call before that. Then Aizawa. But Hizashi would push that as far back as possible.
"Hungry," Eri agreed.
"Well, you can't eat another jelly packet," Aizawa said. Eri pouted. Aizawa ruffled her hair again. "Do you think you can handle something solid? If not, we'll get you soup."
"Can we go across the street?" Erin asked.
"To the restaurant with the bento boxes?" Aizawa asked. Eri nodded quickly. "Sure."
Eri suddenly tilted her head and pointed to a person running. "Is that Uncle Yamada?"
Aizawa smirked as he watched Hizashi stop running and double over, hands on his knees. His other hand grabbed his phone to call Nezu.
The principal answered after two rings, "I already told them that Eri was still on campus, but it is their job to find her."
"You have to stop reading my mind," Aizawa said as he glanced over at the cameras watching them. "…can you save the footage of them running around?"
"Of course," Nezu said with a chuckle.
"And we're getting Bento. Do you want some?"
"My usual please," Nezu answered. "And take good care of Eri!"
"I will," Aizawa promised. "Stop by Class 1-A's dorm in an hour. We'll have the food all ready."
As Aizawa hung up, he moved his gaze toward Eri. She looked up at him expectantly. Aizawa smirked, "First, we're going to stop by Recovery Girl's office, and I'll show you how to wrap my ankle. Then, we're going to sneak out of the school. But you have to follow my lead, okay?"
"Okay," Eri said with a determined look on her face.
Really, Aizawa was going to have to dedicate a week of planning to hunting villains. Because his class did a terrible job of keeping an eye out for him and Eri. Sure, they were probably only looking for Eri, but there was no doubt Hizashi warned them to keep an eye out for Aizawa just in case.
And Aizawa just easily walked past them. He only had to curve slightly to stay out of their sight, and he didn't even need to use his capture scarf. He just did it because Eri seemed to enjoy flying through the air for a few moments.
So that would be their lesson plan for the next week. He would make them split into large teams and try to hide from and hunt each other. Plus whatever scenarios he could think of. Maybe a hostage situation too.
Leaving the UA campus undetected was child's play. From there, they just had to swing by the bento place where they placed a large order and ate an ungodly amount of ice cream while they were waiting. Now, Eri would probably only eat a few bites of her bento box because she was so full from the ice cream.
And Hizashi was going to try to lecture him, but was Aizawa really going to listen to the man who lost his daughter within ten minutes of watching her?
Huh. Daughter. Aizawa could get used to that.
"Are you sure you can carry it?" Aizawa asked as he watched Eri grip the bag with both hands. She was carrying the bento boxes for the adults and Nezu. Plus her box. Eri nodded with determination despite her lagging steps. "Let me know if you need help."
Aizawa slowed his pace. Both hands had two bags each containing a box of bento for the kids of Class 1-A. He knew that their lunch plans would have been interrupted by searching for Eri.
"Do you remember the plan?" Aizawa asked. Eri looked at him and nodded as they stopped outside the gate of UA. Aizawa flashed his badge and stepped inside with Eri at his heels. As they stepped inside, Aizawa knelt next to her, being careful to keep pressure off of his injured ankle.
Eri had done a wonderful job of watching him wrap his ankle. He had let her help put the tape on of course and explained everything he was doing. It was never too early for first aid lessons after all.
Aizawa grabbed his phone and dialed Hizashi. He put it on speaker before handing it over to Eri. She covered her mouth for a moment to hide her laugh before grabbing the phone with both hands.
"Hey, Sho. Kind of busy," Hizashi said as he answered. He sounded out of breath. "You know, cause I'm chasing Eri and all-"
"Hi, Uncle Yamada!"
Oh, this kid had amazing timing.
"Eri!?" Hizashi yelled, and Aizawa heard the telltale signs of his quirk from somewhere off to the right. "Where are you?! Where have you been, young lady!? And why do you have Eraser's phone?"
"He gave it to me when he found me," Eri began as she looked at Aizawa. He gave her a thumbs up. "He looked really mad. And his eyes were doing that thing where they go red. Like when he's trying to stop my quirk!"
"Eri, where are you now?" Hizashi asked.
"With Eraser," Eri answered. She looked up again and squinted. "But he's a few feet away and saying those words that you get mad at Bakugo for saying."
Pride swelled in Aizawa's chest. That wasn't even in the script. This girl was a natural!
"His face is almost as red as his eyes," Eri continued. Hizashi let out a deep breath.
"He's going to kill me," Hizashi said in English.
"What was that, Uncle Yamada?"
"Nothing, Little Listener. But you shouldn't have run away when I wasn't looking."
"Why weren't you looking?"
Holy shit. Was this kid hanging around Bakugo too much? Or maybe this was Midoryia's fault. He would blame both to be safe.
Hizashi made a noise that was between indignation and surprise. Aizawa gave Eri a thumbs up. She looked like she was ready to giggle. But, she steeled herself, "Eraser said to meet in the dorms. Everyone."
"Okay, Eri. Just don't run out on me again," Hizashi said.
"I'm sorry, Uncle Yamada. I was worried about Eraser being hurt," Eri began. "And you kept telling me he was fine. But I didn't know.
"And… I thought you were only saying that because Eraser didn't want to see me," Eri whispered as she made eye contact with Aizawa. Tears twinged her eyes.
"Oh sweetie, no," Hizashi said, but he was cut off as the phone fell because Aizawa was pulling Eri into a hug. He held the young girl close.
"Don't ever think that," Aizawa said as he gently rubbed her back. Eri hugged him as tightly as her little arms would allow. "I always want to see you, Eri."
Eri nodded but didn't let go of him. Aizawa reached around to grab his phone. He picked it up and spoke, "You almost made her cry."
"Is she okay?" Hizashi asked quickly. Aizawa hummed as he continued to rub Eri's back until she relaxed in his grasp.
"Dorms," Aizawa said before he hung up the phone. Eri pulled away from her and rubbed her fist against her eye. Aizawa met her eyes. "Why didn't you tell me that earlier?"
"I didn't want you to be mad," Eri mumbled. "Or tell me to leave."
"Eri, I would never do that," Aizawa said. "You can always come to me. No matter what time of night or day."
"Even when you're napping?"
"Even when I'm napping."
Eri held her hand out, and Aizawa took it. He carefully stood and grabbed all of the bags of bento with his other hand. Then, the two of them started to walk toward the dorms.
"We don't have to do the final part of the plan if you don't want to," Aizawa said.
"I do," Eri promised as another determined look came to her face. As they walked toward the door, Aizawa noticed the campus was oddly quiet. He guessed that the rest of the school saw Class 1-A being menaces, so they decided to stay inside. Good call.
And as they made it to the dorms, Aizawa flicked his gaze up to the windows. The faces at the window disappeared quickly. Eri rushed forward and pulled open the door. Aizawa felt his lips starting to twitch into a smile. It felt like he had been doing that a lot today.
"Thank you, Eri," Aizawa said as he stepped into the building. Eri followed right behind him, and as the door closed, she grabbed onto his hand again. She practically dragged him toward the common room.
Only to pull away when Hizashi, Nemuri, and the rest of Class 1-A came into view. Even Principal Nezu sat on the couch next to Yaoyorozu. Aizawa turned the table and placed the two bags for the students on it. He moved his gaze to watch Eri throw herself into Hizashi's arms.
"You scared us, Eri," Hizashi said as he knelt in front of her. He looked her over like he was checking for injuries.
"We were really worried about you," Midoriya added as he looked at Eri. Nemuri knelt by her and ruffled her hair.
"Stop running away," Bakogu added as he crossed his arms.
"You could have been hurt," Ashido said. Eri looked down.
"What matters is that you're back now," Ojiro said.
"And we brought food," Aizawa said as he placed the other bag on the counter near him and leaned against the wall, crossing his arms. Hizashi smiled at him, and Aizawa raised an eyebrow. Nemuri blew him a kiss and mouthed an apology.
"I'm really sorry for leaving," Eri began as she looked up at them. "Please don't be too mad."
"We were really worried," Nemuri said.
"I'm sorry Aunt Nemuri," Eri mumbled. "I'm sorry, Uncle Yamada."
"It's okay, Little Listener. As long as you promise not to do that again," Hizashi said. Eri nodded quickly. Aizawa reached his hand up to his capture scarf as he tucked his face into it.
"Aunt Nemuri. Uncle Hazashi, you're not going to get divorced are you?" Eri asked. Hizashi froze, and his eyes bulged so wide that they looked larger than his glasses. Nemuri stiffened, doing her best impersonation of a statue. Other than her jaw dropping at least.
"You're married!?"
"I knew it!"
"This doesn't count for the bet!"
As the rest of Class 1-A chimed in with exclamations and remarks of their own, Aizawa bit down on his capture scarf as his shoulders started to shake from laughing. It only got worse as the students bombarded the two with questions.
Nemuri's face changed emotions with each question. It started with her first closing her jaw. Then something like disgust came to her face. Then something that he would almost call sadness. Plus a shudder left her body. Then, she quickly shook her head.
"NO!" Hizashi yelled as his quirk slipped out. "We are not getting divorced!"
"Oh that is good," Nezu added from the couch. "Divorces are messy."
"You two are married?" Yagi asked from somewhere in the corner. That sent Aizawa into another bout of laughter, and he couldn't suppress the sound this time. He buried most of his face into his capture scarf as he laughed, leaning forward slightly.
"NO!" Nemuri almost yelled. "I..."
"We are..."
Aizawa was aware of the eyes on him. He knew that everyone had fallen quiet to watch. It was probably the first time anyone besides Hizashi and Nemuri had seen him laugh. He knew it was the first time he laughed in front of his students.
He was sure that a few phones were pointed at him, and that helped him rein in his laughter. Hizashi looked around the room and raised both hands, "For the record, Midnight and I are NOT married! I repeat: NOT MARRIED."
"Why don't you all get your food," Nemuri said quickly as she stared at Aizawa. His laughing was starting to subside, but he kept his face buried in his capture scarf.
"I helped pick it out," Eri said as she hurried over to the table. Midoriya picked her up, so she could see all the boxes and tell everyone which box belonged to who. Aizawa may have given her the suggestions in the form of pretending to remind himself what everyone liked, but all that mattered was Eri thinking it was all her idea.
Hizashi walked toward Aizawa and leaned on the wall next to him. He huffed and spoke, "Your face is still red."
"From laughing," Nemuri added as she moved to Aizawa's other side. "When was the last time you laughed?"
"Too long," Hizashi whispered. Aizawa didn't answer in case he, god forbid, broke out in giggles because he couldn't control himself. Ms. Joke had nothing on Eri.
"Glad to see you're laughing your ass off," Nemuri said with a scoff. "You are such a bad influence on Eri."
"She's going to become a little monster with you around," Hizashi agreed.
"So, you two aren't married?" Yagi asked as he appeared next to them. Aizawa kept his next laugh from making any sound, but his shoulders still shook. He was thankful that the food had the attention of the students.
"No," Nemuri hissed. She grabbed Hizashi's face. "This idiot..."
"...is married to this idiot," Nemuri said as she grabbed Aizawa's face and forced it out of the capture scarf. Nemuri let go of both of them and looked at Yagi. "Do you really think I would be married to Present Mic?!"
"He is number five on the most eligible pro hero bachelor list," Nezu commented as he walked over.
"Hear that. Number five," Hizashi said as he stuck his tongue out. Aizawa rolled his eyes as he squeezed between them and grabbed their bag of food. He started to hand everyone their food. Hizashi barely acknowledged the food as he waved a finger in Nemuri's face. "And I even told them I'm not a bachelor!"
"It's all the old women who listen to your show so they won't be lonely," Nemuri hissed. Aizawa glanced over to see the students were starting to settle down.
"Wait. Where did you find Eri?" Yagi questioned.
"She went right from the dorms to the teacher's lounge," Aizawa answered.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Hizashi asked as he whirled around on Aizawa and glared.
"You told me to take a nap," Aizawa shrugged. He walked toward the counter to sit down.
"I want to eat with dad," Eri said. The word caught Aizawa's attention, and he turned his gaze to the side. Eri pushed her way toward the crowd of students and walked toward his side. Aizawa picked her up and set her on the counter.
He ignored the stares of the students as he helped Eri get situated and opened the box for her. Only when she was eating did he look at everyone else. A sigh left him, "Eat."
The students quickly moved to the table and started to mind their own business. Aizawa opened his box and took a bite. Hizashi sat on his other side e and spoke softly, "Dad?"
"Yeah," Aizawa said, and he couldn't stop the smile that came to his face. He didn't try to hide it behind his capture scarf either. As the smile faded, he gave Hizashi a harsh look, "And if you ever lose my daughter again..."
"I won't lose our daughter," Hizashi promised as he craned around Aizawa to look at Eri. Aizawa snorted.
"You're still her uncle," Aizawa commented. Hizashi rolled his eyes and pressed his knee against Aizawa's.
"Take good care of her," Hizashi said.
"I will," Aizawa said as he moved his gaze over to Eri. She smiled at him as she took a bite of her food. Aizawa ruffled her head as he studied Eri. His daughter.
And for what felt like the hundredth time that day, a smile came to his face.
