Kim laid in bed thinking about their conversation last night. It was completely lite, stories about the kids mostly. They decided to talk about the important things face to face. Even if they were talking about good times they knew it was important to do the conversations face to face. She heard her door opening as she was day dreaming about Adam but waited patiently for Allie to wake her. "Mommy. Wake up. It's time for our run." Allie loved the morning runs and even more since they would get a treat before returning home. "Well let's get going then!" Kim rolled over to tickle her daughter. "Mommy stop! Please!" Allie giggled loudly. Kim stopped tickling her so they could get moving. "You know the drill. Let's get going then!" Kim said as she got up from her bed.
Kim texted Adam good morning before heading down the stairs with Allie for their run. As they stretched out Adam texted back a good morning and letting her know he was heading out for a run. Kim laughed, looked like something from their time together stuck. Kim and Allie headed out on their run kind of hoping to run into Adam along the way. She wasn't sure his route but it wasn't a big town at all. They were bound to run into each other at some point. Kim and Allie turned on to the main road catching Allie stride. She was a good runner that was for sure. They were running towards the first crosswalk to head to the boardwalk, it was a safer run.
As they hit the boardwalk Kim heard her name being called out once again. They slowed down to see Adam with Riley running closer to them. Kim laughed as she thought back to the days they ran together. "Let's see if you can keep up with Allie's pace since you struggled with mine!" Kim winked as she and Allie picked up speed. Adam laughed and started picking up the pace, he had slowed to say hi to them but Kim apparently wanted to race. Adam followed the route the girls set noticing it was quite different from when they were kids. But one thing hadn't changed as the girls ran towards a local bakery. It wasn't in the same building as before but Adam recognized the name. It was still here and Kim was still addicted to their cinnamon rolls.
"I guess some things don't change." Adam smiled knowing his Kim was still in there under all the hurt, under all the fear. "Nope still love this place! Even if it moved locations it's still my favorite!" Kim winked as she went in to order. Adam ordered one as well to share with Riley. They shared looks as they ate with their kids. When they finished their snack they headed back towards their homes. "If you like you can join us at the beach again today." Kim said as they got to the street Adam and Riley were staying on. "Um maybe. But I also want to spend time with just my son. So how about dinner together tonight and dessert with the kids before playing games at your place?" Adam offered as a compromise. "Sounds perfect. Take lots of photos. I will want to see them later." Kim kissed Adam quickly before waving bye.
The families spent the day with their kids between taking them to beach and playing games. Adam took lots of photos per Kim's request and Kim took tons of photos to send to Adam and to send to Allies dad. They made lots of memories and Adam learned new things about his son. Riley was growing into his own little person with a large personality. As he discovered new things it opened a new world for him to explore. He loved the sand and really loved the ocean. He screamed bloody murder when he was taken out of the water. He also enjoyed chasing the ghost crabs, luckily he wasn't fast enough to catch them.
Adam texted later in the afternoon to meet at a local deli at 5:30 for dinner. Secretly he wanted to go there because it was the first place he ever saw Kim but she didn't know that. He also wanted to go there because it was still here after all these years. He loved all the things that were the same, it was endearing to him. Kim was happy to go there since she and Allie went there often and even brought the pull chicken home with them back to Chicago. Kim had decided to drive to the deli since it was a bit of a walk from her condo. If it had just been Kim she would have walked but when Allie was hungry she couldn't be bothered with walking.
Kim and Allie arrived first and got a table for the 4 of them. She ordered them drinks and hushpuppies which was one Kim's favorites snacks. Allie colored while they were waiting patiently for Adam and Riley to arrive. She couldn't help but smile when she saw them walk through the door. Adams smiled so wide the corner of his eyes crinkled, that only happened when he was truly happy. "Hi guys. How was your day?" Kim asked as Adam kissed her and Allie on the head. "It was good. We lots of fun. What about you two? Did you enjoy your day?" Adam asked looking at Allie as he asked. "Yeah it was fun. We played in the ocean and pool because the ocean got too rough." Allie explained as she showed Adam the picture she colored.
"That's a lovely picture sweetheart. You should be very proud of yourself." Allie beamed with pride. Her father loved her very much but he wasn't around much and he didn't get to see all her artwork and creations. So she was enjoying the praise from him. "Thank you Adam!" Allie smiled before starting to color again. Kim watched the scene in front of her loving how kind Adam was to her daughter. As they ordered their meal Kim decided to ask some questions she was dying to know the answers to. "So Adam. You mentioned that you had been in the academy. What district do you work out of?" Kim asked wanting to hear more about his life. So far a lot of the conversation centered around her and what she had been through. "Well I was in Narcotics at the 13th and just got off a pretty heavy duty undercover which got me a promotion to the 21st district. And it's to the Intelligence Unit." Adam was about to ask what Kim did but Allie jumped in right away.
"Mommy works there too!" Allie was very proud of where her mother worked. "Sweetie you know I'm only on patrol but yes I do help out with their cases sometimes." Kim explained as she saw the look of shock on Adams face. "Okay you have to explain." Adam was stunned. "Well after what happened to me I decided I wanted to help people like me and to prevent it from happening to others. Since it's only me and Allie really I decided to stay on patrol even after I was offered a spot in Intelligence. My old partner Kevin Atwater works up there. As well as some people you know." Kim paused hoping he would get frustrated at her little game she was playing. Teasing him with information.
"Okay I'll bite. Who do I know that works there?" Adam asked laughing knowing Kim was messing with him. "Well I'm pretty sure you know 4 people who work up there. First is Sergeant Voight, you would have known him as a detective and Erin Lindsay's foster father. Then our good friend Jay Halstead is a Detective, his wife Erin Lindsay Halstead is also a Detective and lastly Antonio Dawson also a Detective who used to help at the Police Youth Boxing League you were in." Kim laughed as Adams jaw hit the ground. "You can't be serious?" Adam watched as Kim nodded yes to him. "Holy cow! How is this possible?" Adam just shook his head in shock and surprise.
"It's a kind of long story but after high school Jay left for the military, Erin and I went to college. Different schools but same major. We stayed in close contact throughout college, hung out a lot and she was a ton of help when Allie was born. After college we all went into the academy. Jay was back and they got married. They worked at separate districts but I went straight to the 21st. After two years the became detectives and got into Intelligence since Voight runs it. I got offered a spot after I got shot but didn't take it. The patrol hours are easier fir her schedule, especially since my parents still work. So I guess that was the very short version." Kim laughed watching him process.
"Well I guess this is all meant to be then. If we hadn't met up this week we would have next. It's like the universe wants us together." Adam stared into Kim's eyes as he spoke. He wanted her to see the love in his eyes. "Maybe you are right. Either way I'm thrilled we found each other again. I haven't been this happy in years." Kim was feeling something that she hadn't felt in years, love. They all sat together eating and talking about life. Riley trying new foods which was funny to watch. He enjoyed playing with the food more than eating it. Allie watched in horror since that was not something she would be allowed to do especially in public. "Ry! You need to eat and stop playing with your food. It's not okay. If you don't eat, no ice cream!" Adam scolded in a low but stern voice. He didn't want to make a scene. Riley pouted but started to eat properly.
"I have an idea. If you both eat all your dinner we can go to the playground before ice cream! You both want to play right?" Kim asked as both kids started to nod their heads. Adam watched Kim using her parenting skills. She obviously had been doing this longer than him and he was happy to learn from her. "You are so good with them both. I think I will learn a lot from you." Adam winked at Kim watching her blush. "Well I have a lot of experience with two kids so this is nothing." Kim laughed watching Adam process that. 'Wait do you have another kid?" Adam asked confused and shocked. "Absolutely not! I watch Drew a lot when the Halstead are working. He's 3 now so believe me I have been through this phase before." Kim stated matter of fact.
"Drew? Halstead? Erin and Jay have a kid?" Adam asked surprised. "Yeah. It's actually Andrew but everyone calls him Drew. He looks exactly like Jay but his spirit, attitude and energy is all Erin! He's a little tornado. But he can really be a sweet kid. He and Allie have a great time together." Kim explained realizing that just how long Adam has been out of touch with their friends. "I guess I should admit I lost contact with Jay and Erin when I went to College. Obviously Jay went into the Army, Erin was, I thought, more only friends with me because of Jay. I feel bad about that. I should have been a better friend. Sometimes it was hard to hang out with them knowing they still saw you. I asked them both how you were but they never told me." Adam sighed heavily. "Hey everyone will understand. We all did the best we could. And just so you know, they didn't tell me about you either. I think it was their way to protect us from getting hurt again. Kim was honestly surprised to hear Adam tried to find about her but she really shouldn't be.
"I wish we hadn't been apart but look what we created by being apart. I know one thing that hasn't changed, that's how I feel about you. I really want to work this all out, together." Kim sighed but smiled wistfully. "I agree completely. I um found some photos from high school to show you since we missed so much. Are you interested?" Adam wasn't sure how she would feel but as she grabbed for his phone he just laughed. Kim started at each photo, asking questions and getting the stories behind them. It filled her with such joy knowing he was happy during those years. That's all she had wanted for him. Adam noticed Kim was crying. "Darling. What's with the tears?" Adam was confused by the tears. "You were happy! That's all I ever wanted for you. I'm so happy knowing you found joy in life." Kim cried out. "Always. Like I said I understood. I was happy but I would have been happier with you, like I am now." Adam leaned forward to kiss her forehead.
"Okay let's head to the park!" Kim smiled at the kids. "Yeah let's go!" Allie was jumping up and down. Adam laughed as he picked Riley from the high chair. They drove to the park and the kids took off running to the swings. The laughter was infectious and both adults fell in line with the kids laughter. After playing for awhile they walked to get ice cream from a local place that was a quick walk away. The kids chatted about things they saw on the walk towards the shop. It was a good time for all of them. After the kids got ice cream they all walked back to the benches to watch the sun setting while eating their dessert. After going back to the cars they all headed back to Kim's condo to hang out a bit more. Adam and Kim both had more questions they wanted to ask. Things they wanted to explain.
They put both the kids down to sleep in different bedrooms before headed to the porch to talk. The bugs were bad otherwise they would have gone to the deck. "So tell me something good?" Adam asked as Kim settled against him. "Well I'm not sure I told you this yet but I own this condo. I bought it when Allie was about 1. I rent it out year round and it pays for itself. And before you ask, I bought it when the economy was bad and with my settlement." Kim smiled thinking about this place she loved so much. "That's amazing Kim but what settlement? I don't understand." Adam was surprised but confused as to where this settlement came from. "Well that's not a fun story but it turned out my rapist was a sex offender and the studio where I danced didn't run a background check. When my parents found out they sued on my behalf. They saved the money in a trust till Allie was born when I used to money to buy a small home in Chicago and this place here. I wanted to make sure were are stable but also happy." Kim smiled wide about how she handled it all.
"I'm so proud of you! You created an amazing life for you and your daughter! It's amazing to see what you have done. You should be nothing but proud of yourself because lord knows I am!" Adam pulled away so he could kiss her properly. It had been years since he kissed her properly and it felt like nothing had changed. His hand slowly found the back of Kim's head helping to hold her mouth at the perfect angle. Kim wasn't sure what came over her but she moved so that she was sitting in Adams lap. They both moaned in to the kiss. Adam other hand moved to the small of her back to help steady her. He was in heaven.
When Kim pulled away breathless, she rested her forehead on Adams as they both tried catch their breath. "Well that's a first in a long time." Kim whispered as she moved to kiss Adam again. They both settled into a long night sleep. Wrapped together. This was the first night they got to sleep together, even if it was with a blanket between them. Only the time would tell how the night would unfold. But they would get through it together.
