It had been a few weeks since Adam had been shot. It was healing well and the family was doing well. Allie had gone east with Eric after Adam was shot and had a lovely weekend on the visit. She even got to see her Uncle Mark and Aunt Devon. She had missed her family though and couldn't wait to get home again. Once she got home she was pretty clinging for a couple of days. They decided to try getting her into talk to a counselor. It could be nothing but they wanted her to have a safe place where she could speak freely. They never wanted her to feel like she had to hide things from them. And right now it seemed like she was. Overall the kids were happy, loving life and loving their new home. They had way more space to run around, a larger yard and a finished basement where they could run amok all winter.
But for now Kim was heading to the bullpen concerned that Adam didn't answer the phone for the daycare. "Hey Kim! Everything okay?" Antonio asked as he saw her. "Hey! Where's Adam? The daycare called him several times." Kim looked frustrated. "He's interrogating a suspect. Hold on let me grab him." Antonio headed to grab Adam who came running towards her seconds later. "What happened?" He looked scared. "Well apparently he was sharing lunch with another little boy, which is lovely but he ate something that caused hives all over his little body. I'm going to get him, take him to the pediatrician and figure this out." Kim watched his shoulders sag. "Well that sucks. So it's not life threatening?" He needed to double check. "Doesn't seem like it. He's playing with the other kids still but scratching at his hives." Kim sighed a bit. "Okay thank you for telling me and thank you for taking care of him. Please call me when you know what happened?" He asked hugging her tight. "Absolutely. Let me go get him. I will call you soon." Kim kissed him before leaving to get Riley.
Kim left the district and headed right to the daycare. She walked in not rushing too quick knowing he was okay and she needed to take it easy some. She was almost 4 months at this point so she was clearly showing a small bump. "Heys I'm here to pick up Riley Ruzek." Kim saw him jump up hearing his name. "Thank you for coming to get him. He's doing well. No fever, no cough, no runny nose. We talked to the other child and it seems like Riley ate some avocado. We added it to his file so hopefully this doesn't happen again." By this point Riley was in Kim's arms resting his head on her shoulder. "Hey buddy. We have to get going. We have a doctor's appointment to get something to help with the inching okay?" She felt him nod. "Okay say bye okay?" He waved as they headed out. She carried him to the car putting him in his seat before they headed to the doctor.
The car ride was quiet as Riley was sleeping. Kim pulled up at the doctors office getting him in the stroller before heading inside with him. She got him checked in and paid the co-pay then took a seat to wait. Luckily they didn't have to wait long. The nurse came out to take them back to the exam room. He was weighed and did a brief exam before the doctor came in. Riley was well behaved the whole time, probably helped he didn't feel the best. "Good afternoon. How are we feeling?" The doctors asked Riley. "Itchy!" Riley whined. "Oh I see that! An I take a closer look please?" He asked politely. Riley nodded lifting his arm for the doctor to see. "So this definitely looks like hives. I'm not overly concerned about it. Just try not to allow him to eat it going forward. We can give him an antihistamine to bring down the swelling and help with the itching. Just make sure you are keeping track of anything that causes the hives and keep everyone in the loop so we prevent this." He headed out of the room to grab the meds. When he came back they gave the meds to Riley and then gave him a lollipop.
As soon as they left the doctor's office they headed right to the district. Kim knew Adam would need to see is son. When they arrived Riley cheered excited to see his dad. They headed in Riley squirming to get down right away. "Bubba I will let you walk on the stairs after the gate. But stay in my arms for just a short time longer." Kim felt him settle down some. "Hey Platt can you buzz us up please?" Kim asked watching her eyes light up seeing Riley. "Of course. You feeling better little man?" She asked watching him nod. They headed to the first set of stairs to the gate before Kim put him down to walk up the stairs. She was close behind just in case. As he got closer the giggles started. "Ruzek! Your kids on the stairs!" Antonio stated pointing towards the stairs. "Hey buddy!" Adam scooped him hugging him tight. "Are you feeling better?" He asked rubbing his sons back. "No itchy! And I got a lollipop!" Riley laughed happily. "Well that's good to hear! Why don't you go around saying hi to everyone okay?" He placed him down and he was off to get hugs from everyone.
"So what's going on?" He asked looking relieved. "Allergic reaction to avocado apparently. The doctor wasn't too concerned but did say we should start keeping track of any food that he reacts to and to let everyone know so we can try to prevent it from happening again. But it's good overall." Kim assured him. "You sure you aren't his biological mom?" Adam laughed. "Right? I'm surprised but thrilled he's okay." Kim smiled seeing Riley running around the room getting hugs. Adam felt Kim tense for a quick second before relaxing again. He looked at her with raised eyebrows but shook her head letting him know they will not talk about it here. "Come on Ry! We gotta head home buddy!" Kim called out. "Let me walk you out." Adam pickup his son carrying him to the car. Once he was buckled in and the door was closed Adam took the chance to find out what happened up there.
"So we gonna talk about it?" He asked her trying to be supportive. "Um just didn't realize you work with Ruxton now." Kim shrugged trying not to talk about it. "Only for this case. What happened with you two?" He knew it had to be bad. "Um well we got drunk one night. Like pretty wasted drunk. We went to his place and you know the rest. Left during the nightmare leaving alone in a strange apartment. Haven't seen him since. Was just caught off guard. I'm good." Kim smiled hoping he would relax. "Okay. We both have a past and you were open with me about that stuff but not the who. I don't need to know the who. You and I are solid. So don't stress about it." Adam kissed her passionately before helping her in the car. "I love you!" Kim called back. "Love you too darling!" Adam smiled waving bye. He headed back in going straight back to the current case.
He got back to his desk working on a lead. He noticed Rixton walking towards him. "So uh you and Burgess?" He asked. "Yeah. Kims my fiancé and mother of my children. We aren't talking about her with you. You help get her wasted, screwed her and left her during a nightmare. We have nothing to talk about! So let's finish this case so you can leave again!" Adam snapped and heard a round of gasps. Rixton lowered his head and walked back to the desk he was using. Kevin had moved towards Adam to calm him down some. "Hey we all have a past. Don't be pissed at Kim for this." Kevin gave him a stern look. "Oh I'm not pissed at her. I'm pissed at him for leaving her alone to deal. Getting her wasted and using her. Kim and I are solid. That douche needs to go." Adam pushed past him heading to the break room. They all heard it loud and clear.
Jay followed close behind. "Okay we get it. But we need to get through this case before you flip out completely. But I get where you are coming from. I had no idea that happened and am pissed off too but we need your head in the game right now. Let's get this finished." Jay patted him on the back before going back to his desk. Adam slowly returned to his desk, taking calming breaths as he went. He knew Jay was right but he was pissed that someone could use Kim like that. She has such a beautiful heart and d soul. He just couldn't imagine anyone using her like that. As he sat at his desk he noticed a text from Kim. It was a photo of Riley napping on the floor with Tiger laying next to him. It was super cute and he was kind of surprised that Tiger was not with Kim. "Emotional support cat?" Adam asked her. "Maybe. I don't know if that's a thing. But it seems to be about right." Kim smiled wide thinking about it.
Several hours passed by with little to no leads. "Guys head home. Get some rest. We can pick it up tomorrow." Voight sent them home after that. Adam was relieved to get out of there for the night. As he headed out the team invited him out for drinks like always but he declined wanting to see his kids. He drove home excited to see how the kids days were but he also wanted to give Kim a break. She had been with Riley almost all day. He was sure she was exhausted. He entered the home hearing lots of laughter coming from the living room. He saw Riley blowing bubbles in the house which concerned him but Kim was laughing hard and so was Allie watching Tiger trying to pop the bubbles. "Looks like you all are having fun in here." Adam announced his presence. "Daddy!" Both kids ran to him wanting hugs. "Hey kiddos! I missed you both!" He bent down to hug the kids.
"We are playing with bubbles!" Riley yelled. "I see that." Adam was shocked that Kim allowed it. "Hey baby. It's catnip bubbles. Tiger loves it!" Kim smiled wide. "I'm shocked you allowed it!" He laughed hugging her. "Yeah I know but look how happy he is!" Kim pointed smiling at him. "Oh I get it. It's cute that's for sure." Adam sat in the couch as Allie curled up on his lap. "Hello sweetheart! Did you have a good day?" He asked holding tight. He loved talking to his kids. "Yeah it was fun!" She paused like she was thinking about something. He let her get her thoughts together just like he does with Kim. "Um can I ask you something? I heard daddy say something that I didn't understand." She looked up scared but also unsure and curious. "Sweetheart. Have you been thinking about this since you got back from your dad's house?" He asked. She just nodded. "Oh sweetie I wish you would have said something sooner. We could have fixed this sooner. Now please tell me what did daddy say?" He saw Kim watching from a distance playing with Riley a bit more.
"He told Uncle Mark that mommy had a flashback to her rape. They all looked shocked and sad. What's rape?" Allie heard her parents gasping. She only looked at Adam, she hated seeing her mom upset. "Oh. Well it's kind of hard to explain at your age but I will try my best." He paused needing a moment looking over to Kim who is shocked and on the verge of tears. "So you know how boys have a penis and girls have a vagina?" He asked trying to explain the basics. She nodded. "Okay so when a man puts his penis inside a woman's vagina without permission that's rape. So when mommy was a teenager a man did rape her and she was very sad afterwards. She cried a lot, couldn't eat or sleep. Lots of nightmares. But your mommy got help and is doing much better now. She's very happy now and she no longer has nightmares. Does that make any sense?" He explained as he held her little hands. "Is that why you both tell me not to let anyone touch me down there?" She asked. "Yes sweetheart. We never want that to happen to you. We want you to have nothing but happiness." Adam smiled pulling her in for a hug. He sensed she needed that.
"Are you okay now?" He asked still holding her. "Yes thank you daddy!" Allie hugged him tight and ran over to Kim hugging her tight as well. Kim cried softly holding her daughter. Adam just shook his head knowing this was nothing they had expected nor wanted to deal with at her age. But it seemed to make sense to her so that was good. The rest of the night went smoothly till Eric called. He talked to Allie before Kim took the phone back. Adam ushered the kids upstairs for bedtime giving Kim time to speak to him alone. "So what's up?" Eric asked. "Yeah so Allie overheard you talking to your brother about my flashback and my rape. So Adam had to explain to our daughter what rape was. So lovely night!" Kim sighed heavily. "Fuck! I didn't think she heard me! Is that why she's been off for weeks?" He asked angry with himself. "Yes! It's been bothering her and she didn't know how to ask. And she was afraid to look at me while asking her questions. We need to be more careful!" Kim was stressed over this.
"Kim you know I would never do this on purpose! I honestly had no idea she could hear me. I am truly sorry that she found out. And I'm truly sorry that anyone had to explain this at such a young age. I promise I will be more careful going forward. I really was just answering a question as to how you were doing. Mark and Devon really do love you all. I really am sorry." He sighed knowing how pissed Kim was. "I get it. I really do. Please just try to prevent this going forward. I'm still going to have her talk to a counselor just to be safe but I think this was the root cause." Kim sat on the couch with Tiger resting her eyes. "I agree. I think it's healthy for her. For all of us. Look I'm gonna go. Try to relax and get some rest. I know you need it." He hung up after that. Kim put her phone down sighing.
Adam headed down the stairs seeing Kim off the phone, eyes closed with her little buddy. "How did that go?" He asked softly not wanting to scare her. "He was really upset that she heard him. Literally saying fuck loudly. Apologized multiple times. I'm not really angry about it because really it could have happened here too. But I needed him to hear it, to understand we need to be more careful. I'm not happy we have to deal with it but it was bound to happen. How are you dealing with this?" Kim asked feeling his arm wrapped around her. "It was rough! I would rather do a death notification than that!" He shuddered. "But I'm glad she finally told us what she was thinking. And I'm glad she trusted me to ask. It was rough though. I really hope this is just a bump in the road." He held her tight as he spoke. He looked down feeling fur on hand.
"What are you doing little man?" He laughed seeing the cat sprawled out over the couples laps. "I think he knows we both need some love tonight." Kim smiled rubbing his belly again. "I have to admit he might be a brat and a pain in the ass but I like this. Patting him is relaxing." He knew Kim would be happy about that. "But he is my brat and you are the spare human!" Kim giggled at Adam who was trying to look offended. "Spare human? Really?" He laughed asking. "Yup! He only goes to you when I'm not here!" She laughed hard. "Yeah sounds about right. I'm happy to see you smiling." He kissed her softly. "Yeah I'm okay. Just happy and safe in your arms." He felt her snuggle closer.
They both enjoyed the silence for a long time before he spoke again. "I may have a confrontation with Rixton. I could have gone without saying anything but he tried to ask about our relationship and I flipped my shit. I'm sorry." He heard her gasp a bit. She pulled away to look in his eyes. "I'm glad you only had words with him but really you have nothing to worry about." She felt the need to assure him. "Darling! I know that. But he doesn't get to ask about us after what he did. Especially during a case. It was unnecessary." He shrugged. "Well I'm glad you know that. And I agree with you. Let's just keep moving on!" Kim smiled leaning in for a kiss. They both felt fur being rubbed on their chins as they kissed. "Buddy! You really are cramping my style here! I hope you don't become a cock block!" Adam laughed rubbing the cats head again. "He doesn't sleep in our bed most nights so I don't think that's an issue. And we always close the door. So no issue." Kim laughed knowing Adam was trying to be funny.
"Are you ready for bed?" He asked as he felt her falling asleep in his arms. "Yeah. I'm exhausted." They got up and started heading up the stairs. "Guess I'm the cock block tonight?" Kim laughed but so did Adam. "Nope. You have had Riley all day and you're pregnant. You are allowed to be exhausted. Especially after that conversation earlier. So let's just sleep wrapped up together." He helped her up the stairs neither could help seeing Tiger close behind them. "Only tonight buddy and only because I know Kim had a rough day." He tried being stern with the cat but they both laughed knowing he didn't understand and didn't care. Kim settled into the bed, Adam not far behind her. Wrapping his arms around her and the cat who was snuggled up to Kim's chest.
The next morning the small family got on with their lives. Both kids excited to head back to school. As the couple headed inside the district the shared one last passionate kiss before going separate directions. Adam entered the bullpen seeing everyone but Rixton there. "How did it go last night?" Kevin asked. "With Kim fine. We were never an issue. But we finally figured out what's been on Allie's mind. She overheard Eric talking about Kim's rape to his brother. So Allie wanted to know what rape was. So I had to explain it last night in a way that was as simple as possible. That was rough!" He shuddered recalling it. "Man that does sound rough! I'm glad you both at least know why she's been off lately. Is she still going to go to counseling?" Jay asked knowing it was in the process of happening. "Yeah we think it's in her best interest at this point. She's still insecure about Eric's parents after her birthday and now this. I don't think it's a long term thing but we have to try to get her help while we can fix this. She's still young enough to fix it before it's long term trauma." Adam explained to the team. "That's great Adam! I'm proud of all three of you for protecting her and getting her the help now." Erin came over to hug him knowing it must have been a rough night for them.
"You know the most amazing this about it all is that Kim barely cried. No nightmare afterwards. And of course her little buddy didn't leave her side. I'm so proud of her. I'm so proud of how far she has come in less than a year. She truly is my miracle." He knew he sounded soppy but he could care a less. He was damn proud of his girl. "Here Adam I want you to see this photo. It may explain Kim's connection to cats. Just know it's a little rough to look at." Erin handed him her phone. Adam look the phone gasping see his Kim, 13 year old Kim with strangle marks on her neck but the point was her cat passed out in her arms. "My god. This was right after her rape." He had to steady himself seeing her like that again. "But I see the love clear on her face for that cat. It's beautiful." He couldn't stop staring at it. "Hold on I want you to see one more." She took the phone before finding another photo. "Here this is right before they put him down. The lymphoma caused him to lose weight and they couldn't do treatment since he was already 17. It took two years before he succumb to the illness." Erin showed him the photo. He literally had to hold it together.
"I have never seen her so brokenhearted. It's killing me looking at this. How did she get over this?" He asked handing her the phone back. "Lots of tears and lots of time. I still don't think she's totally over it. But she tries to remember the pure joy he brought her. The comfort he brought her in a desperate time. I think Tiger is refilling that joy for her." Erin replied seeing Adam pull out his phone. He found a photo of the two together showing Erin. "You mean this face?" He watched her look at the phone showing Jay. "Yup that's the one." Erin smiled. "I've told her I have seen that look too many times but normally it's after being intimate. I never saw her that peaceful outside our bedroom till we found Tiger. It's beyond beautiful." Adam admitted knowing it was a bit too much information but completely true.
"That's great man! Too much information but good to hear she has found peace again." Jay patted his back returning to his desk. The team started working again as Rixton showed up for work. No one said much they just wanted the case finished. Two hours later the team noticed Kim walking towards the break room. They knew she was probably in need of a snack so they didn't make too much of it. After grabbing her snack so started to head back towards the stairs. She stopped at Adam's desk to get a hug before returning to work. It was simple and easy but the small things made them love each other more. They caught a lead and headed out to the location of their suspect. Adam was completely focused on the case having no time for dealing with any drama from Rixton but he did notice how he looked at Kim earlier. But he could deal with that later. For now he stayed focused on the case knowing Kim was happy and safe at the district.
As they arrived on scene the team stayed outside only sending one person to get a look inside. They sent Rixton since it was a case he brought to intelligence. Even though they had a search warrant they needed to know what they were walking in on. He notified that the home was empty as far as he could tell. They broke into two teams. One going through the front door and the other watching the back door in case someone was inside who chose to run. Adam was at the back door far away from Rixton. Once it was clear no one ex was running out the back the team enter through the back door. They started ripping the house apart. "Boss!" Adam yelled out as he searched a bedroom. "Ruzek what did you find?" Voight entered the room. "Bloody baseball bat. Bloods dry though. Seems unrelated to this crime but maybe what led to it." Adam knew this could give them motive or just unrelated but it had to be followed up on. "Get that processed asap." Voight left to keep searching.
The team met outside to go over what they found. It wasn't a ton but they did find drugs and firearms. They all headed back to the district after that. Needing to figure out who these guns belonged to. It was a long day and didn't seem to be going anywhere quick. Adam finally got a call from CSI team stating that the blood on the bat matched a murdered gang banger from the week before. "Okay so the bat killed another gang banger a week ago! It's payback! That's what led to this! We got the connection!" Ruzek called out to the team. "Great find this prick!" Voight yelled out. The team worked tirelessly to find the suspect. "I got an address. We need to head out!" Jay stated as they headed down to roll up. They got their vests on and headed to the address. They needed this finished and finished fast.
Of course the suspect ran. Adam and Kevin hot on his trail. Jay and Erin in one car following behind, Voight and Al going a different direction to cut off the suspect. Dawson was left with Rixton looking for more evidence. The suspect had fired several shots but none hitting the guys. The chase came to an end when the suspect ran into traffic getting hit by a car. Adam removed the perps gun as he checked for a pulse. The suspect hadn't made it. No one was shedding a tear over this one. The team remained on scene till it was clear. They returned to the district exhausted. "Guys paperwork tomorrow. Get some rest!" Voight allowed them to leave for the night knowing it had been a long day and a long chase.
Adam was gathering his items when they all saw Rixton moving towards Adam. "We are not doing this." Adam started to leave before he heard Rixton call his name. "What? What do you want?" Adam almost growled. "Look it freaked me out. The nightmare. I couldn't handle her that's why I left. You don't understand." Rixton tried to explain. "Oh I don't? I have been kicked, punched, scratched, attacked and screamed out during her nightmares. But I love her so it didn't matter to me and still don't. Now if you will excuse me I need, no want, to go home to my fiancé and my kids." He left after that. He couldn't wait to get home to his family. Family time always made things better.
As he walked in he heard lots of laughter. It was after dinner and the kids were dressed for bed already. Once again the kids were playing with Tiger getting him chase the jingle balls. Adam watched smiling wide knowing this was the best medicine for a terrible day at work. "How's my family?" Adam asked getting their attention. "Daddy!" The kids ran to him as he walked closer to them. He hugged both kids before turning his attention to Kim. "Hey darling." Kim got up to hug him tight. "How was your day kiddos?" He loved hearing all about their days. He loved seeing how their eyes light up and their facial expressions. Phone calls didn't do them justice. The kids rambled on about school and their friends. He loved it. After they finished talking he settled them into bed for the night. They were already bathed and dressed so all he had to do was read books and tuck them in. But he wouldn't have it any other way.
After the kids were sound asleep he headed back down to Kim. She was in the kitchen heating up dinner for Adam. "Hey darling. Kids are asleep. How was your day?" He wrapped his arms around her waist. "It was good. Trying to stay productive on desk duty. How was your day?" Kim asked melting into his arms. "It was okay. Suspect died after leading on a chase. Ran in front of a car. Pretty brutal to watch but it's over. Rixton tried to talk to me again. I flipped again. Didn't wait for a response." He shrugged his hands on her small belly. "What did he say?" She asked curious. "He tried to say that he left you that night because he couldn't handle the nightmare. He insinuated that I wouldn't be able to either. I told him in front of everyone that I can and have handled your nightmares. And then I walked away." He replied feeling her tense some. "I hate that the whole team heard that but thank you for shutting him down." Kim turned to bury her face in his chest. "I got you always. No matter who tries to mess with us. You are my love and my life." Adam rubbed her back trying to keep her calm.
"Eat up! You need food. I'm gonna relax on the couch." Kim placed the food down for him. "Hey please sit with me." He begged not letting go of her. "Sure." She sat down at the table. "Are you mad at me?" He asked scared of the answer. "No not really. Just upset that it was discussed in front of everyone. I mean I know everyone knows but the details I just wish weren't so public. I know he said something in front of everyone first but it doesn't change anything. I'm still thankful you defended me, defended us. I just need some drama free days. Being pregnant is hard enough let alone having to endure the torture of explaining to our daughter what rape is. And now this. I just need a break." Kim sighed.
"I hear ya. This weekend we have the concert and then we will take the time for our family and nothing else. No one else. The kids are staying with your mom overnight so we can just enjoy the night after the concert. And I promise you lots of stress free time all weekend. We all need it." He watched her nod knowing she was a bit overwhelmed at the moment. It still happened and pregnancy wasn't helping the situation at all. He waited till he was finished eating before he led her upstairs to the bathroom. She needed to relax and a bath would help. "Let's relax a bit in the tub and then snuggle up in bed together." Adam wasn't really asking but he still wanted her to know what he had planned for the night. The water was started and helped undress Kim before undressing himself. He helped Kim into the tub with himself. She relaxed against his chest.
"That's it darling. Just relax some more." He urged her hoping she could release all the stress she was holding. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have taken it out on you. It's just been a lot lately. I just want to relax more." She sighed feeling bad for how she acted. "Hey it's all good. I actually was surprised how mild your reaction was. So it's all good. Maybe we could look into Ry's birthday this weekend? It's coming up at the end of June so it would be nice to have a party with everyone. Not sure we need an activity but I want something special. What do you think?" He asked looking for insight. "I think it's a great idea. I know we don't do a ton of tv so maybe sports theme? And we can get a splash pad or two for the kids to run around in?" She hoped they could do something outdoors since June was great weather and the kids loved the outdoors. "I think he would like that. He loves the water so would be good for them to cool off. And he loves sports so yeah that works for me." Adam kissed the side of her head as they relaxed more.
"Don't forget to put in for time off for NC again. I want to take the kids to the fireworks this year." She turned smiling at him. "I still have that photo. Oddly enough in the book you lent me. I held onto it all these years. I used to look at it on July 4th. I still love how happy you looked, the awe and wonder shining in your eyes. It was beautiful and still is." He felt tears on his body. He opened his eyes to see her smiling wide but crying. "I think we should frame it for your desk. A reminder of who we fight for everyday. I am a cop to protect her, I feel like she's closer to free now. But I'm still reserved in letting her go fully. It probably makes absolutely no sense." Kim hid her face under his chin feeling silly. "Makes perfect sense. You want to protect kids like you were from getting hurt. You use your childhood self to fight the good fight. And you are afraid to let her out completely all the time because you are afraid she will get hurt again. That will always stay with you but I think you are right about freedom for her coming soon. Because we truly are stronger together and it's amazing." He watched as her eyes welled with more tears as she leaned in to kiss him.
The kiss starting off slow and soft grew more passionate by the second. "We should probably not do that in here. It's gonna make a mess." Kim shrugged pulling away. "Well then let's get out, dried off and to bed." He laughed as she smacked his chest. But was getting up to dry off. She wrapped a towel around her drying quickly before rubbing lotion on her growing belly. Adam watched intently. "Let me." He took over right away helping to rub the lotion in using a circular motion. "I never got to do this with Ry so I want to do this everyday I can." He watched her nod knowing he would be hands on for sure this whole pregnancy. When he finished he placed one kiss on her belly before drying off and leading her to their bed.
