Chapter 1

The dark icy air slapped hard against my body as I ran, the familiar sight of the dark forest swished past me.

"You won't get anywhere by running from me" I spoke halting as I did

"Please don't hurt me, Meener" the young vampire pleaded

Dios mio, how could I do this?

Day in and day out I was ordered by Aro to find and identify special talents and report back, and if they posed too much of a threat, I was to bring them back to Volterra. I winced at the thought, lord knows those unfortunate enough to go with me never return.

This one was no different.

About a week ago, Demitri had given me an order to investigate a young Dutch vampire living in Spain who possessed particularly strong compulsion powers. This normally wouldn't cause much alarm but after further inspection, it had been found the lad had been quite the rebel in his human life leading many revolutions. And we of course couldn't have that, so he had to… be dealt with.

I shook my head silently cursing myself, he had barely lived a vampire minute and here I was about to send him to his death like a lamb to the slaughter. Right into Caius and Aro's unforgiving hands.

"I promise, I will not touch a hair on your head. I just need you to follow me back to Voltera,"

The young man calmed at this revelation.

"What you say is true? What do they want with me in Italië?" He continued in broken English

"The masters find your powers interesting and wish to speak with you"

Someone should cut my tongue out for speaking such lies.

The child extended his hand

"I am Cyrus"

"Eleazar," I said, curtly taking his hand and shaking it "So will you be joining me willingly?"

"So eager, and here I thought tranquility came with age" he laughed

Maybe he deserved to have Aro knock his lights out… No you monster, I chided myself.

"I will." he answered to my dismay "Tell me your story Eleazar"

You want to hear your executioner's story, Chico? How about I tell the one about your death next?

Suddenly a new wave of self-loathing washed over me, how could I be so heartless as to wish death on a young man, perhaps I've been spending too much time with the brothers. Truth is, this isn't the first time I have had thoughts like this, every victim made me simultaneously wish the road to the brother's hungry arms was shorter while also wishing we never met in the first place.

Even though working for the Volturi had considerably hardened my soul I still tried to remain as compassionate as I could, therefore I mourned every victim thoroughly.

"How about you tell me yours."

I forced a smile onto my face.

"Alright, I was born in Amsterdam 19 years ago, my parents were pretty poor so they had me sent to… what's it called, Ah, farm to work. There I met a very angry creature who made me what I am today."

"You're only 19…" I stated sadly

"Yes, but you needn't look so upset about it, I promise I will live my afterlife to the fullest" he grinned and gave me a wink

Blissfully unaware. Oh, how I wish you had fought harder.

"If we are to get to Voltera before sunrise we need to leave now" I changed the subject

"My feet hurt, must we get there so fast?"

Stop making this so difficult I ordered in my head.

"The brothers are very eager to speak with you, Cyrus"

"But, my poor feet" he whined, seeming closer to a child of nine than a man of 19

I cocked my brow.

"Fine, but I won't run my very fastest"

The trip to the castle wasn't the smoothest, as the adolescent rebel kept whining and insisting on asking questions the whole way there. Me answering everything from what the vampire rulers were like, to trivial questions such as my opinion on the diverse tastes of women's blood had the youth convinced that we were to be the best companions to have ever graced this earth.

When we finally saw the castle he abruptly stopped and turned to me with a wide-eyed smile

"Wow, vriend, isn't this place magnificent? It reminds me of a riot I was part of a couple of years ago outside a stupid aristocrat's house. Boy was he shocked"

"It is, but seeing as I live here I cannot fully appreciate it as you do"

"Oh, I had forgotten that part"

After that tiny distraction, we finally stood in front of the Voltera castle doors.

"Cyrus," I said turning to him "Do not act irrationally or foolishly in there, promise me you won't"

He simply nodded in agreement.

My limbs felt impossibly heavy, I should run with the boy now, I should do everything in my power to not let them kill him.

I laughed sourly to myself, they probably would make one of the guards do it, not even bothering to touch him themselves, how horrible.

Upon entering the long hall we were greeted by Felix and Demitri

"The masters will see you soon," The big one said, eyeing my budding companion

"Wow, Eleazar, he makes you look ancient" Alec's uppity voice intercepted from the shadows

Are all the guards here?, great I thought to myself.

Quickly shrugging the ignorant child-guard's comment off me and Cyrus made our way to stand in front of the masters. The tragedy had begun.

"What's your name, young one?" Aro asked with curiosity

"Cyrus, master"

I cringed watching him puff his chest up.

"Well, Cyrus, we have heard a lot about your strong abilities," The master began "And we obviously can not have that in our kingdom, imagine the chaos"

"I am afraid I don't understand, Master Aro"

"We have to kill you, you imbecile" Caius explained

I sucked in a breath, unintentionally making my presence known.

"Did you know about this?" The boy's hurt eyes glazed over with venom tears as he turned and addressed me "Why didn't you warn me? Why did you not say anything… I thought of us as friends, Eleazar!" He accused

I cowardly turned away, closing my eyes.

The entire scene flashed by extraordinarily fast. After his outburst two guards took him by the arms and led him to the very fire pit that would be his demise, all the while screaming curses and begging me to help him.

My hand instinctively went to my face to wipe off the excess emotion I didn't wish the masters to see.

Monster! My insides howled at me

Would your Padre be proud now, huh?

What would your siblings think, would they be proud to claim you?

And like I had known it would be the hall was silent once more, as if I had never entered and Cyrus never existed.

"You did the best you could to make his last trip a happy one, Eleazar. He was a threat to our rule, you were just following orders" A morose voice relived me of my masochistic thoughts

"But, Master, he was just a nino. No matter his powers, he didn't deserve this" I protested

"You could do nothing, that's what was meant to happen"

"But-"

"Rest, Eleazar" Marcus ordered "I'm afraid this line of work will break you, young one. So until then, wash yourself and rest. You are dismissed"

I took my master's advice and walked with a heavy soul to my chamber, every step echoing his screams. Every movement reminded me of him.

"Duermete mi nino, duermete mi amor…" I began humming an old lullaby and rubbing my temple.

While the inviting armchair I had placed myself in was comfortable the phantom headache in my head was as unforgiving as my thoughts and so I quickly resorted to numbing it with a glass of whiskey.

"... duermete pedazo, de mi corazon," I kept humming as I brought the glass to my lips and

emptied half its contents down my throat "...Si este nino lido, que nacio de dia," and I

downed the other half as well, for good measure.

Staring into the side of my bookshelf felt nice, the modern man thought too much, I chuckled, the bookshelf itself was an old antique that the masters used to decorate the guard's rooms, I had one, Demitri had one, Jane, and Alec both had one, every damn guard had one. The side of it was just as dull as the front, except for the fact that the side of mine was decorated by someone's neatly carved initials.

C.C

Before I could ponder more on the subject my mind decided it did have some pity for me and let me drift off into a vampire's slumber.
