Here we go to the next arc: Big Time!
Meanwhile, Momo is left dealing with her own problems once more, as her parents are becoming more and more adamant about her shutting down the Future Foundation, as they are big investors and stockholders in Detnerat, the same company who is beginning to try and encroach on her efforts to try and build up her foundation, as she is seeing potential partners and shareholders for her organisation drop out because of pressure from the corporation.
And, whilst all of this is going on, she still has her training that she must do as a hero, which is only made worse by how much more intense the training is becoming in U.A., under Aizawa's command. It's getting so intense that she believes it's even giving her small lapses in her memory.
Worse yet is her relationship with Peter, as it has become strained and awkward since they shared that kiss during the War of the Symbiotes. Momo remembers feeling happy during that kiss, and yet now, she's not so sure. Now, she's not sure how she feels, and she knows that Peter feels the same as well, though for his own reasons rather than hers. She's not sure if she wants a relationship from him, or even what she wants with him at this point, and that only serves to heighten the awkwardness between them.
Soon, she is ordered, by her mother and father, to attend a upper class party, located in the new building where the old F.E.A.S.T. shelter was located. Momo is forced to swallow down her apprehension as she is at the party, watching her parents mingle with their business partners and friends, before she herself is approached by members of the Hearts and Minds party, as well as representatives of the Detnerat corporation, all of whom are interested in her Future Foundation project, though she is quick to remember what she was told before about the Hearts and Minds party representative by Jessica Drew and her other friends, and does her best to try and keep her distance from them.
Soon enough, she is approached by the head of Detnerat himself, one Rikiya Yotsubashi, who compliments her on her work in trying to set up the Future Foundation, and begins to talk to her. Momo is at first interested in what he is talking about, finding the concept of quirks in terms of law and legality an inherited interest due to her parents having strong opinions on the matter, as well as having been influenced by Peter's philosophy and how he goes about things in regard to the law. However, she begins to grow nervous about him when the conversation turns to how it can be considered liberating to be able to use one's quirk freely, without restrictions.
Rikiya makes it clear that he is hoping, though his various connections, to be able to help pass future laws that will make their world a better place for people with quirks. Momo remembers Izuku, and asks where the quirkless will fit into this brave new world of his.
Rikiya, at first, doesn't answer, but then says that when these laws are passed, the quirkless will be long gone. Momo no longer wants any part of this conversation.
However, she remembers something that she read a long time ago, which this man is reminding her of. Momo asks Rikiya if he has ever read the Meta Liberation Army Manifesto by the controversial political activist figure known as Destro. Rikiya, becoming more comfortable in the conversation thanks to this mention, enthusiastically says that he has, and how it has helped influence both his beliefs and those of the people that he associates with.
Momo then asks if he ever read the section about Destro discussing equal rights between quirked and quirkless, and Rikiya looks at her with a flicker of confusion. Momo then makes it clear that when she was younger, her parents had read her one of the latest MLA-Manifestos as part of her higher education, but, in her curiosity, she had ended up seeking out the earliest copy, eventually using her family funds to purchase one of the rare copies, and found out that there had been heavy revisions to the original manuscript when compared to the recent ones. More specifically, the entire section of the book regarding equality with the quirkless was cut out, replaced by arguments for how Destro was a visionary before his time that, in comparison, made the newer texts seem a lot more cultish in how they were written.
Destro may have been a visionary to some and a terrorist to others, but he still advocated for equality amongst those who have powers and those who don't, and Rikiya and his friends seem to have forgotten that.
Momo decides that it's time to leave, and moves to the door. Her mother and father order her to stay, and Rikiya, somewhat surprised that Momo wasn't as agreeable to his words as his parents were, reaches out to stop her, trying to convince her to stay and at least hear him out-
Momo's hero suit, the Iron Spider, forms around her, and the four metal arms on her back would swat Rikiya's arm away, declaring that she didn't know what Rikiya and his people wanted with F.E.A.S.T. and the Future Foundation, but she would be damned if she let any of them get their hands on them.
Declaring that she could make her own way home, Momo would force open one of the windows into the building, create a slingshot with her webshooters, and fling herself out of the window and into the urban wild, swinging all the way back to U.A..
Then, Rikiya, Re-Destro, would rail on Momo's parents, demanding to know why their child wasn't as agreeable to the tenants of the Meta Liberation Army like they had promised. Momo's parents would unctuously apologise and reply to their Grand Commander that she had been, before, but then Peter Parker, Spider-Man, had begun to poison her mind with his ways, and turn her against them.
Re-Destro would scowl at this. Spider-Man, F.E.A.S.T., and the Future Foundation are a threat to the Meta Liberation Army by their mere existence alone, and must be eliminated before they can challenge their ways.
And here is where we get to the main reason as to why the Meta Liberation Army wants Peter and his allies bright low:
Spider-Man is giving people hope.
The people that the Meta Liberation Army typically exploit and recruit into their ranks are those that have been persecuted by hero society, such as the homeless and those that are forced into villainy, offering them a solution to their problems and a chance to take back what they think they are owed from society.
But then along came Spider-Man, and with him came F.E.A.S.T., who began setting up a home for many of those same people that the MLA reached out to, giving them food and shelter and the chance at their own happiness and contentment, followed by the Future Foundation, who had promised to fix many of the problems that had made those same disenfranchised folks in the first place.
As much as Spider-Man was hated by hero society as they revered All Might, there were also those that saw him as their champion, possibly even more so than the number one hero himself. They saw his willingness to bend and break the laws to help others as a strength, and his way of breaking the chains of hero society for the sake of the greater good and helping others something to look up to and be inspired by.
And now, here was F.E.A.S.T. as well, on top of the burgeoning Future Foundation, delivering great promises of reformation for former villains and sanctuary for those who have been dispossessed by hero society, and, worse yet, with the possibility of actually being able to deliver on those promises.
That would not do. It was supposed to be the MLA who provided the downtrodden hope for liberation, not this rambunctious fool and some upstart girl trying to set up a charity effort, and yet these people were being viewed by others with faith. Faith that they should be putting in the MLA instead.
And so, with that, Re-Destro makes up his mind.
For the sake of the Meta Liberation Army, the Future Foundation must be eliminated.
And meanwhile, Momo returns to the hospital, where Izuku is undergoing physical therapy sessions to help him deal with his fragile skeletal structure and muscle atrophy from being in a vegetative state for so long. Peter is there alongside her, encouraging their friend and doing their best to help out as well.
During this time, Momo would talk with Peter, and she would express to him her worries and concerns over the ambitions of the Hearts and Minds party and their allies in Detnerat, and what this could mean for the future.
Then, they would begin to talk about themselves, and Momo and Peter would finally begin to discuss their confused feelings for each other and the kiss that they shared during the War of the Symbiotes. During this conversation, Momo would finally express how she feels about Peter, how she is attracted to him, and she knows that Peter is attracted to her as well.
But now, there are two things that complicate this.
One, is the stress and worry that come with juggling both learning how to be a hero and set up the Future Foundation, all at the same time, and especially with all the enemies that they've made who contest and stand against making this dream a reality, and how she no longer has the time to try and make a relationship between them a possibility. Peter expresses that maybe, once all of this is over, then maybe they could make a relationship between them work. However, Momo counters that it might never be over, that they might constantly be facing an uphill struggle just as difficult, if not even more so, than the days that have come before them…
And even them, Momo isn't sure if either of them are at all ready for a relationship…
As Peter is still in love with Gwen.
Momo isn't stupid. She can tell that Peter still pins for the girl that he lost so long ago. Whenever she comes up, Peter is always quick to sing her praises and speak well of her, even when the conversation hadn't originally been about her. He's still in love with her, and is still mourning her so much that he wouldn't be able to manage a relationship, much like he had tried to do with Felicia.
As it stands, Peter isn't emotionally capable of sustaining a relationship right now. Not when his grief is still bloody and raw. Until it heals, until he can finally learn to cope with her loss and let her go… then a relationship between Momo and himself just isn't healthy or possible.
Momo then decides to take a page out of Peter's book and distance himself from her for a while, at least until they can both sort their lives out. Peter is saddened by this, but promises to give Momo the space that she needs, albeit reluctantly.
Momo leaves, heading back for U.A., and Spider-Man is left on his own once more, his guilt over everything eating away at him once more…
I know that this is ironic, considering that Peter's love life is one of the most talked about parts of the Spider-Man mythos, as well as one of its most complicated aspects, but I never really had a plan for Peter having a girlfriend or serious love interest during this story, and even if I did, I had certainly never expected it to be Momo. But then I started writing, and when I considered what I had planned for Momo throughout the duration of this story, on top of what I had already written, it kind of just felt right, and started to fall into place after a while.
However, then I remembered that I wanted Momo to be her own character and have agency of her own, and not just be in Peter's shadow or be his designated love interest throughout this story. Then, I considered how young this version of Peter's character actually was, and how he was probably still hurting hard from what happened to Gwen, and, well, I started to consider if these two actually being in a relationship was a wise move to make, and if it would be better if these two characters were to walk their own separate paths for a while, and...
Well, here we are.
