After all these years

Chapter 1 Dinner Invitation

"Miss Lang! Miss Lang!" It was Victor Russell the building's super calling her name. Lana was just returning from a 10-day business trip to Japan. She was overseeing the opening of new fashion boutiques in Tokyo and Kyoto, and a design center in Tokyo under the "Lana's Fashions" umbrella corporation. The openings were quite successful, and she was exhausted. Success has its price. Vic was hustling down the hall, trying to catch her before she disappeared into her top floor suite.

"Miss Lang, I have something for you." He handed her an envelope; it looked like a card or something.

"Who gave this to you, Vic?"

"A gentleman, said his name was Clark. He's been helping me around here; I sure appreciate his help. I've never seen anybody work so fast!"

"Um . . . how long has he been helping you?"

"Little over 2-months, or so. Why?"

"Just wondering. Did he just volunteer?"

"Yeah, he just found me one day and asked if I could use some help. That was right after that big rainstorm. We had a lot of damage to the suites, mostly minor though."

"Do you let him work alone, in people's apartments?"

"No, ma'am. I did offer him a master key, but he refused. He wouldn't work alone in any apartment or suite. Real nice gentleman." Vic's cell rings, and he excuses himself and rushes away.

Lana slips into her suite, toes off her boots and hangs up her coat. She wheels her carry-on to the bedroom and puts it on her bed. Returning to the LR, she puts her briefcase on the coffee table and plops down on the couch. Opening the envelope, she pulls out a nice card with the following written in neat cursive –

My dear Lana,

I asked Vic to give this to you when he next saw you. I hope your trip was successful.

I would like to express my gratitude for your recent assistance in my hour of need. You saved my life! I am in your debt.

May I take you to dinner when you have a free evening? You pick the evening – Vic has my current contact information.

Fondly,

Clark

PS I know a quaint little place in Mexico, if you don't mind another flight so soon.

Lana is stunned. Since they parted after Smallville HS graduation, their contacts have been few and far between. Yes, they had a relationship at times, but when she headed for college and he to his destiny (he had told her ALL), they knew they were on different paths. She still had affection for him; Clark was the only man she thought of or saw in her dreams. But now, what did he have in mind? Then she remembered.
