Letter Two:: A Script

Mercedes groaned, rolling over texting her best friend, Santana. She was exhausted and just wanted to sleep a little longer but she knew that she had things to do. One of which was actively avoiding her neighbor, thanks to Santana he thought she was interested and had been trying to get her attention ever since.

Ding! Ding!

"So are we doing this then?"

Mercedes groaned. "Good morning to you too, Satan. How are you?"

Santana laughed. "You and your need for greetings. How are you feeling and are we doing this? I got Kurt and T with me!"

"Hey Mercy-me!" Kurt, her other friend shouted.

"Do you have any food, we're starving!" Tina asked, making her laugh. "Oooh, we should do brunch! Bottomless mimosas!"

"Hell yeah Chica, get dressed we're having brunch!"

Mercedes rolled her eyes. "Ahem, have we forgotten why you're all coming over? Even if I didn't invite you…"

"Oh… shit. Okay your place then brunch!" Santana reasoned.

"Or you can all just let me lay in bed and wallow." She countered only to be met by her friends all shouting different things into the receiver. "Fine! Fine, I'll get dressed!"

"Good, we're outside. Don't bother, I have my key so we'll let ourselves in." Santana replied before hanging up.

Mercedes sat up before laying back down and groaning. "I just wanted to sleep a little longer." She muttered to herself.

She used to love mornings like this. Feeling tired from a long week and sleeping in with- she shook her head. She wouldn't think about him. He signed the papers and showed up to court without a fight.

"Mrs. Evans, are you okay with this arrangement?" The judge asked and had she been remotely paying attention she would've heard him the first time.

"Mrs. Evans?"

"Huh? Oh yes, that is fine." She muttered.

The judge nodded slowly. "Mrs. Evans, I don't usually ask this but are you certain you want to proceed with this divorce?"

She swallowed the nagging voice in the back of her head screaming at her to say no. "Yes, I'm very certain of my decision."

"Mr. Evans, you are giving up all the assets accrued during your marriage in exchange for Mrs. Evans agreeing not to sell the home you two bought?" The judge asked.

Mercedes peeked past her lawyer, he was scruffy and so damn handsome. He'd grown his hair out, it was pulled into a neat low bun with a few stray hairs pushed behind his ears.

She could see the look on his face and a small amount of satisfaction fluttered throughout her body.

That was a lie. A huge, colossal lie and she knew it.

"Yes, I want her to keep it. She took the time to decorate it and…" Sam said trailing off.

"My client will relinquish his access to their shared home and has even agreed not to show up ever."

Ever.

That was a long time. Mercedes wondered if he was really going to keep that promise.

He had.

She hadn't seen him since their divorce was final.

Three months ago.

She got out of bed when she heard her friends coming inside. She'd given them all keys because the house was too big for just one person.

That's the reason she picked that particular house. It was meant for filling with kids and… love.

"Mercedes! You had a package waiting for you! Can we open it?" Kurt shouted.

She quickly walked out of her room and into the kitchen. "No!" She said, grabbing the box before grunting at the weight of it. "Shit it's heavy."

She put the box on the counter and was met by her friends looking at her suspiciously.

"What?"

Kurt narrowed his eyes on her. "You… you look different."

Mercedes scrunched up her face. "As opposed to the last time you saw me?"

Tina nodded slowly. "No, he's right, your usual curviness is softer."

Kurt snapped. "That's what it is! Your body looks softer. Still sexy but softer."

Santana snickered, making Mercedes roll her eyes. "I've gained some weight, thanks for pointing out my flaws."

"I guess we're calling it weight now…" Santana mumbled.

"Is it not weight?" Kurt questioned.

Tina's eyes grew wide before she looked at Santana. "Holy shit! Are you pregnant?"

Kurt gasped. "You've been having relations? With who?!"

Mercedes groaned, choosing to ignore their line of questions and opened the box before letting out a soft gasp.

"What?" They all asked in unison.

She looked over the contents before shaking her head as she slowly moved away from the box.

"Bastard." She said, tears welling up in her eyes.

He was a bastard.

Santana moved over to the box and saw several small heart shaped boxes, chocolates and flowers.

"Is this from him?" She asked.

Mercedes nodded, as tears began to fall. Today was their anniversary.

"Oh shit, that is today!" Tina said, quickly moving over to Mercedes and wrapping her up in a tight hug.

"Mercy…" Kurt sympathized. "Maybe he had it already ordered?"

"He didn't. These are all hand written." Santana explained pulling a card out, she was the only one of them outside of Mercedes that knew his handwriting.

"He had no right to do that." Mercedes sobbed out. "Fucking asshole!"

"Want me to get Blaine and Puck to kick his ass?" Kurt asked and she knew he was serious.

Yes. She wanted him to call everyone but they didn't know why she divorced him, they just assumed that things didn't work out.

That was a lie.

They wanted to know what really drove Mercedes to end things but they also didn't want to bother her about it. She seemed to have had her mind set but they all remember that day in court…

"Mercedes just let me have one more chance to make things right." He pleaded.

It was the first time he'd spoken during the entire process. He'd allowed his lawyer to speak for him and he didn't put up a fight for anything she ironed out.

He even agreed to pay alimony, to her surprise he tripled what her lawyers made her request. She didn't want to ask for anything but they told her it was best if she asked before he did.

She looked at him seeing the hurt in his eyes but she forced herself not to fold.

"Mercy… baby. Please, I'm sorry. Just give me one more chance." He said again and she felt it.

Her resolve was cracking. Much like his voice, it was trembling and she forced herself to look away. She looked at anything but him, even if she felt those beautiful green/blue orbs burning her.

She leaned over to her lawyer. "Can…can you please ask him not to speak to me." She managed to get out before tears started to fall, forcing her to turn completely away to quickly wipe them.

"Your honor, my client has asked that Mr. Evans no longer address her directly."

Sam let out a sigh. "Mercedes!" He said firmly and she jumped slightly at the bass in his voice.

"Please advise your client-"

"No, I don't need to be advised on anything because I know you still love me and you know I still love you! What I did was a mistake, we promised for better or worse, Mercy!"

Mercedes suddenly felt hot and nauseous. She hadn't eaten and was exhausted mentally and it was manifesting physically.

She felt the bile starting to rise and quickly ran out of the courtroom, finding the nearest bathroom.

She threw up.

Before collapsing on the floor and bawling. She really wanted her mother but as it may, Faith Greene-Jones wasn't exactly supportive of her daughter's decision to divorce Sam.

Faith was also the only person in her family to know what he did and yet believed it was a mistake to handle his infidelity this way.

"Mamas, you in here?" She heard and tried to compose herself but failed.

She failed miserably.

She failed.

Santana walked into the stall and got down on the floor with her, she gently pulled her away from the toilet and wrapped her up into a hug.

"You can stop if you want or you can keep going no matter what it's the right decision for you. No one can make it but you." Santana said, resting her head on top of hers.

"He cheated on me." She said softly.

Santana tensed. "What?"

Mercedes nodded. "He cheated on me and I left and he didn't chase after me. I went back out of habit and he made love to me… and I let him. I let him make love to me the whole night."

"Did you want that to happen?"

"I didn't fight it, I wanted it when I realized I was home. I wanted to see if it would mend my heart but it just made it hurt so much worse." She admitted, snuggling into her.

"Do you regret it?"

"No… I could never regret that. I just… I don't want to do this San." She sobbed. "But I can't be married to someone that would just cheat on me, especially after being my first and only."

Santana nodded. "Then you have your answer. Just because this door closes doesn't mean it's locked. You have to protect yourself and sometimes it's from the person you love the most. He betrayed your trust and your marriage, this decision is not unwarranted."

Mercedes nodded, happy to have someone in her corner. "Thanks San, I don't want anyone to know why… my brothers would kill him if they knew."

A devious grin crossed her. "Maybe you should let them… send him a strong message that you're not to be messed with." She joked.

Mercedes hated that it made her giggle because she wanted to tell her brothers but she didn't. Growing up with seven brothers and being the youngest was like having bodyguards around at all times and it made it difficult for anyone to even look her way.

Her mother would always tell her that the one that wasn't afraid of them would be the one she would marry.

It just so happens that Sam was that one.

He was the only one.

Ever.

"I can throw it all away, chica." Santana offered and she quickly shook her head.

"Are… are you sure?" Kurt asked, "We can burn it all."

"I… I don't want to throw it away without looking at it all first… but not now. I have an appointment." She said as Tina pulled away.

"I thought we were going to get brunch…"

Santana shot a knowing look at Mercedes. "You wanna tell them or shall I?"

"Tell us what?" Kurt and Tina said in unison.

Mercedes sighed, frowning at Santana. "Nothing. I just have to go check something out and then we can go to brunch."

"They're gonna find out either way so you might-"

Mercedes walked over, grabbing Santana's arm and pulling her into the laundry room. "I don't know if it's that and if it is, I have to tell him…"

Santana rolled her eyes. "Then tell him and stop living in denial, it's not like you…" She started, before narrowing her eyes at her. "Unless there's something else?"

Mercedes looked away. "It's not that, it's not that at all… I never cheated." She stammered. "I just… why would it happen now?"

"Maybe because you went back there and you two had several rounds of unprotected sex and the time line adds up."

Mercedes shifted. "Fine, I slept with someone… it wasn't… we were protected but it broke. What if it's his?"

Santana smirked. "Who in the hell did you let hit!"

"Shh!" Mercedes pulled her further into the laundry room. "I was mad okay and I wanted to make him feel like I did but… I didn't expect him to be so gentle with me and now I feel guilty."

"Who was it?"

"Noah and before you say anything yes I know he and Quinn are back together which is why I refuse to believe there is a bean floating around inside of me right now!" She replied and Santana smirked.

"You fucked his bestfriend?" She asked. "The same bestfriend that has been checking on him?"

"Wait, what? How do you know that? Why does he need to be checked on?"

Santana shook her head. "He hasn't been well… something about him being sick but I think he's fine now."

Mercedes shifted, biting her nails. "Sick how?"

Her friend narrowed her eyes on her. "Normal sickness… why would Sam be an option? Doing the math, you'd have to be more along if it was to be his, so?"

She looked at Santana before looking away. "Okay so maybe I lied about a few things…"

Santana let out a heavy sigh. "GUYS, BRUNCH IS CANCELED!"

"WHAT? WHY?" they shouted in unison.

Mercedes looked at her pleadingly. "BECAUSE MERCEDES HAD SEX WITH SAM!" Santana shouted and Mercedes groaned.

Kurt and Tina both came rushing around the corner. "I knew it!" Tina said, smirking. "Mike let slip that Sam had been over here a few weeks ago but he wasn't sure if you were home!"

"Mercy-me, why didn't you tell us this?" Kurt asked. "No wonder the man is sick, he got another taste then had to go cold turkey again!"

"How is he sick? You all know that he's sick but no one is telling me how!" Mercedes questioned.

"Why don't you go see him?" Tina asked.

She looked at her friends. "What aren't you telling me?"

They all shared looks before Kurt stepped forward. "He's sick, like hospital sick."

"Wait… what? Why didn't any of you tell me?" She asked, rushing past them to her bedroom. She threw her covers off of her bed, grabbing her phone before dialing his number. She waited for it to connect, nervously tapping her foot.

"You've reached Sam, probably out saving the world. Leave a message!"

Shaking her head, she dialed it again but got the same results. "Why didn't anyone tell me!" She shouted, scrolling through her contacts then hitting the name she needed. Her friends walked into the room, seeing her pacing back and forth.

"Mercedes?"

"Moma, what happened? Why didn't anyone call me?"

"Oh sweetheart… he didn't want anyone to tell you."

"MARY! WITH ALL DUE RESPECT THAT'S NOT OKAY!" She shouted into the receiver, feeling her lips quivering.

Mary sighed. "Hold on…" She said and Mercedes could hear her talking to someone.

"Merce? It's Dwight."

She felt tears burning in the back of her eyes. "Why didn't you call me? Why didn't anyone call me?"

Dwight looked at his wife before sighing. "He didn't want us to contact you… he made all of us promise we wouldn't because- he said he caused you enough pain and that you seemed happy so-"

She let out a strangled huff. "So just fuck Mercedes then? Well you let that bastard know that not telling me is worse than telling me!"

"Mercedes, you two aren't married anymore… that responsibility isn't yours. It's what you asked for… you told him to not contact you anymore."

"That doesn't mean- it doesn't mean I don't still care." She replied softly. "I still care about him."

Dwight let out a breath. "Then respect his wishes." He said before hanging up.
