Now Oliver really couldn't focus on his work. Why hadn't Shane told him about her knee? And was it ok? How had he not noticed? He stewed over these questions, but if he was honest with himself, he was pretty sure he knew why she hadn't told him. Rita had filled in lots of the details from the incident the night before that he hadn't known. He realized that he hadn't really given Shane the opportunity to tell him the whole story before he let his anger take over. Frustrated he shoved the mind numbing stack of paperwork in front of him aside as he got up in search of a task that would effectively hold his attention.
An hour later Norman walked into the DLO.
Both Oliver and Rita looked up from what they were doing.
"Hey, how's it going?" Norman asked.
"Oh fine, fine," Rita answered, trying to sound upbeat. The tension was so thick that even Norman recognized it.
"Hey did you know that there are nearly 140 thousand blue mail collection boxes in the United States?" Norman asked, trying to break the tension.
He got nothing but crickets. Undeterred, he tried again.
"Did you know that the postal service put Albert Einstein on a stamp in 1966? Stamps were 8 cents then."
This time Oliver took the bait.
"That is quite interesting Norman, do you happen to have one of them in your collection?"
"Actually, I have two of them," Norman told him, "they are not terribly hard to find, but I did come upon mine almost by accident."
After Norman had shared a rather detailed version of how he found his Albert Einstein stamps, Oliver looked at his watch surprised to find it was nearly 1:00 PM. He needed to get out of the office, it was never the same without Shane there.
"Why don't we head to the Mailbox Grille for lunch." He announced.
"That sounds great," Rita said, "I'm starving."
As they headed for the door Oliver stopped Rita, "Thank you for telling me everything."
"Oh, I'm afraid I made a mess of things," she said, wringing her hands together nervously.
"No, please don't worry about us, everything is going to be just fine," he said, trying to assure her that he would work things out with Shane calmly. He internally promised himself the very same thing. She gave a relieved smile as they walked out the squeaky doors together.
Once in the corridor they noticed that quite a commotion was happening outside their door. A small crowd has gathered trying to see and hear what was going on. As they got closer they saw Andrea arguing animatedly with a dark haired girl they didn't recognize.
"I'm sorry, but 'I need to see the blonde lady' does not get you a free pass around the United States Post Office." Andrea said as she crossed her arms authoritatively.
"Now you need to turn around and march yourself right back out that door," she uncrossed her arms and pointed at the exit.
As the postable team neared the scene they could see the girl looked defeated and scared like she was going to turn and run.
"Wait a minute," Rita said as she got a closer look, "I think that's..." She pushed her way to the front of the crowd, "Maria," she called.
The girl turned her head, surprised that someone knew her name. She looked nervous when she recognized Rita from the incident the night before. Her eyes darted about the room like she was going to bolt, but then she changed her mind.
"Yes, yes that's me," she answered, "Can.. can you help me?"
"Oh yes we most definitely can," Rita said as she approached the girl and lightly put her arm around her shoulder. "Come with us," she said as she led Maria away from the crowd leaving a stuttering Andrea behind them.
Once they were back in the DLO Rita introduced herself and Norman and Oliver to the scared looking girl.
"I know you were looking for our friend Shane," Rita told her, "the blonde lady, but she isn't here today."
The girl looked dejected at that news, "She... She said she could help me find my mother. I was afraid my father would hurt her, but she still said she could help me. I had to run away to get here. I need to find her. She was so brave, I tried to be brave like her."
"Oh Maria, you are so brave," Rita said, grabbing the girl's hand. "We work with Shane, and we can help you find your mother."
The girl's face brightened at the news.
