"How did you and Marty meet?" Rosa asked one Saturday, as they worked in the garden together. Deeks was just out of earshot, hoeing a new patch of dirt.
"Uh, we met during a case," Kensi answered. "Why?"
"I just wondered." Rosa shrugged, gently patting dirt around a baby pepper plant. "My mother and father met at school when they were children. They always told how they were friends all those years and then started dating once they had graduated. Papá took my mother to a dance the day he proposed. For as long as I remember, he always took her dancing on their anniversary."
Kensi pressed her lips together, touched by Rosa's story, but also saddened that now it was merely a memory.
"It sounds like they loved each other very much," Kensi observed, watching Rosa carefully.
She nodded, running a few pieces of dirt through her fingers. "They did."
Raising arm in the air, Kensi waved until she got Deeks' attention, and gestured for him to come over. He set the hoe to the side, using the bottom of his shirt to wipe his sweaty forehead as he wandered over.
"What's up? Is it time for lunch? Because I could totally go for some sushi right now."
"No, Rosa wants to know how we met," Kensi told him.
"And how you started dating," Rosa added.
"Oh, well, that is a very interesting," he paused to grimace as he took a seat next to Kensi. "That is an interesting, and long, story. Kensi and I met when I was still with LAPD. I was undercover at this MMA gym when Kensi came in posing as a victim's girlfriend. She thought I was a criminal, but she liked me anyway."
"That is so not true," Kensi protested. She lightly smacked Deeks' shoulder. "I thought there was something super sketchy about you. And I was right, thank you very much."
"She couldn't keep her eyes off me," Deeks continued in an undertone to Rosa, who giggled.
"Uh-huh, this from the guy who took every opportunity he could to pretend we were a couple during cases."
"Hey, I fully admit that I had a thing for you pretty soon after we were partnered together.
"Not that you said anything," Kensi said, rolling her eyes. "You and your metaphors."
"Says the woman who gave me a knife. And a box." Despite her words, she smiled fondly at Deeks. It was amazing how easy it was to talk about those years now that they were behind them.
"So how long was it before you got together?" Rosa asked, looking thoroughly confused.
"Mm, about six years," Kensi said.
"It was around Christmas, and we were ice skating," Deeks continued.
"Deeks was ice skating; I was trying not to fall down."
"Kensi stopped me, told me that she wanted to be brave, and basically stop pretending that we weren't completely in love with each other. And then she kissed me." Deeks grinned at Kensi, his expression soft.
"Um, we kissed each other," Kensi corrected him. "But that was one of the best decisions I ever made."
"Definitely." Leaning towards her, Deeks gave her a light kiss. "Oh sorry, Rosa."
Rosa shook her head, apparently unbothered by their slight PDA. "I think that's beautiful," she murmured. "Thank you for telling me."
"Of course. You can ask us anything you want, anytime," Deeks assured her.
"Oh, then what happened at your wedding? Callen mentioned something about a Russian man trying to kidnap you."
"Anything but that," Deeks amended as Kensi quietly snickered into his shoulder.
