Chapter Forty Five
A/N: I do not own anything other than my OCs when they come out to play. Everything else belongs to either Disney or the Greek Myths.
Heh, real quick I wanted to apologize for not realizing I'd been typing 'Geene' when I meant to say 'Genevieve'. Apparently I got into such a flow last chapter that I never realized that's what I'd done—even after proof reading too! Lol sometimes we miss the most obvious of things!
AmethystDragon: Oh thank you! I know, I couldn't believe it as I was writing it—our Bal babies are one! Time flies when you're busy writing I guess :D
The Christian Dino: Thank you!
OceanBlueSeaEyes: Nope, definitely not the end! In fact there's still about 34 chapters to go!
alexis: I'm sure there'll be a Ginny and Chad chapter soon :D
Estela234: Glad you liked it!
danifan3000: Honestly…gives you something to think about. Would have been nice if they'd answered that question in Descendants!
Tracie Adams: Glad you liked the chapter! :D
bal4ever: Glad you liked it!
SaikoGoyangi: Oh thank you, glad you liked the chapter! :D
Hope you guys enjoy this chapter! Let me know what you think! :D
Mulan smiled as she leaned against the trunk of her magnolia tree. It was a beautiful early June day and she had wanted to come out and train for a while, only to quickly find out she wasn't as young as she once was.
That wasn't to say she was slowing down any but the same movements that had come so easily to her when she had joined the army to save her father's life were now limited by her range of motion from her age. Though honestly, with having had two adult children, Mulan would have been surprised if her body hadn't changed with age.
"Hey Mulan," a familiar voice called out and Mulan smiled.
"What are you doing here Mushu?" Mulan asked as the small red dragon scurried over to her.
"He followed me out here," Shang said with a small chuckle as he came into view.
"And what brings you out here, General?" Mulan asked with a slight teasing note to her voice. She knew most, if not almost all, of Auradon thought of her husband at the rank of former Captain since that was the rank he had been when he helped her to save China, but Mulan loved seeing the proud look Shang got in his eyes whenever someone called him by his proper rank.
Well, his former proper rank that was, seeing as he had retired from the army when they had their children and had taken up coaching the Imperial Academy's Tourney team. Well, at least until retirement truly called to him. Thankfully their son was able to take up the mantle as he'd taken the role as Assistant coach after he'd graduated from school.
"Our son's on the phone," Shang said, handing his mobile phone to Mulan.
"Shang? Is everything okay?" Mulan asked as she put the mobile phone to her ear.
"Of course mom," Li'l Shang said, a smile audible in his voice. "I just wanted to call and let you know that…I'm engaged!"
"What? Oh Shang, that's fantastic—Jordan said yes?"
"Wait…how did you know I was asking Jordan? Did you have Mushu spy on me?"
Mulan shook her head. "I can put two and two together Shang, and you've been spending a lot of time alone with Jordan. But congratulations, the both of you."
"Thanks mom," Li'l Shang said with a small smile audible in his voice before he paused. "Hold on, Lonnie's calling me."
"Oh, see if you can connect the call so we can all talk to each other," Mulan said. Normally she wasn't so nosy and she completely understood her kids having lives away from her however this was different. Lonnie was giving birth to her first child and that day was also her due date, so everyone was naturally a bit on edge every time Lonnie called just in case it was with news that she was in labor.
"Yes mom," Li'l Shang said with a bit of amusement coloring his voice and Mulan could hear the faint tones of buttons being pressed before her son spoke once more. "Hey Lon, what's going on? And just to let you know mom's on the call too."
"Oh that's…great! Jay's only been…trying to call her and dad for the past fifteen minutes!"
"Lonnie? Is everything alright?" Mulan asked and put the phone on speaker so Shang could hear as well. They weren't used to hearing that tone from their daughter and they hoped it wasn't anything too serious.
"Sorry mom…I didn't mean to snap but I'm…oh Gods how did you go through this twice?"
"Are you in labor?" Shang, Li'l Shang, and Mulan all said at the same time.
"Um…yeah you can say that…no Jay, put me down I am more than capable of walking to the car!"
"Hey guys," Jay said, having taken the phone from Lonnie as he continued to carry his pregnant wife to their car. "Yeah, Lonnie's in labor, contractions have been about three minutes apart so we're going to the hospital just to be on the safe side. Hopefully it'll be a quick labor."
"The first born comes when they want to," Mulan told him. "It's the deliveries after that can be quick. When I had Lonnie, we almost didn't make it out of the car before she was born."
"…And that was more information than I wanted to know," Jay said.
"Yeah mom I'm with Jay on that one," Li'l Shang said.
Mulan shook her head. "Jay, just focus on getting Lonnie to the hospital safely and we'll all meet you there."
"Sounds good," Jay said and the call disconnected.
"Okay, sounds like we need to get this show on the road," Shang said as Mulan handed him back his phone; having ended the call with their son.
Mushu sniffed and dabbed his eyes with a handkerchief that seemed to have come from thin air. "My little baby's all grown up and becoming a grandmother! Oh I'm so proud!"
Mulan shook her head. "Come on Mushu, let's get into the car."
"Right behind you Mulan! Hey, do we need the lucky bug?"
"It might be best if we leave any bugs out of the hospital," Shang said as he held the door open for Mulan.
"You may have a point," Mulan nodded and slid into the car. Closing the door once Mushu had darted in, the three of them made their way to Auradon General Hospital. In all honesty, Mulan found herself wishing that Lonnie could have been closer to home when she had her child so they wouldn't have to take such a long car ride but she understood why they had moved to Auradon City.
It would make Jay's commute a lot easier now that he was Queen Mal's advisor.
Not that it made Lonnie's commute any less important but after Lonnie told her team that she had to take time off because of her pregnancy and her child, the team immediately got to work breaking ground and building a training pavilion in Auradon City so Lonnie had the resources to stay sharp. Her coach had even joked that once her kid was old enough, Lonnie could bring them to train at the pavilion if Jay hadn't ensnared them with Tourney by that point.
"We're here," Shang said and pulled Mulan out of her thoughts. "You go to Lonnie, Mulan. I'll park the car and be right up."
"Okay…should I leave Mushu out here with you?"
"You think I'm going to stay out here while your daughter gives birth? What kind of a guardian would I be if that happened?" Mushu asked as he quickly made his way to rest on Mulan's shoulder. "Besides, you didn't let me attend the elopement so you owe me!"
"I believe Lonnie temporarily banned you because of how you reacted to my and Shang's engagement," Mulan said, shaking her head as she made her way into the hospital.
"Hey I fixed you two up!"
"And yet that doesn't change the fact that you had previously worked to break us up." Mulan said as she walked over to the welcome desk. "Hello, can you please tell me what room my daughter's in?"
"Sorry, we can't give out the information of patients in private rooms," the nurse working the desk said. "If you don't have it, you'll have to wait here."
"Wait here?! Do you know who she is?" Mushu exclaimed. "This is the woman who saved China singlehandedly and if she wants to know what room her daughter's in, then you're going to tell her. Now! Before I have to do to you what I did to the Huns' hawk!"
"Mushu, behave," Mulan said but turned back to the woman, who now had her eyes wide in both realization and slight panic. Though whether it was at the fact that she was talking to the savior of China or that she was being threatened by a portable dragon was unclear. "But he is right, I would like to not be held up knowing where my daughter's room is. I understand you have your policies, and if this was any other circumstance I'd be one hundred percent on your side. However, you are keeping me from my daughter."
"Yeah, this woman went to war to protect her father! There's no telling what she'd do to you if you don't let her see her daughter!"
"Your daughter's in this room," the nurse said, writing the room number down on a piece of paper for Mulan to hold on to and preventing Mushu from continuing his rant. "And I didn't mean to hold you up, it's just with your daughter and your son-in-law being major sports stars…it's hospital policy to treat them as if they were King Ben or Queen Mal. To ensure no reporters try sneaking in."
"I understand," Mulan said and gave the nurse a small smile as she walked off; making sure to get a visitor's badge as to prevent anyone from stopping her. Thankfully the way to Lonnie's room was fairly uneventful and soon Mulan was able to see the smiling faces of her daughter and son-in-law.
Wait…smiling?
"It seems I'm not the only one in the family who was almost born in the car," Lonnie said with a small chuckle. "Jaxson was nearly born in the parking lot."
"Jaxson?" Mulan asked.
Jay shook his head. "Lonnie and I had a deal. If our baby was a boy, he'd get my first letter. If the baby was a girl, she'd get Lonnie's," he explained. "And Lonnie wanted to insist on a name our son could shorten like mine so we went with Li Jaxson."
"He's being examined but they should be bringing him in soon," Lonnie added. "But he's healthy, has all ten fingers and toes and Jay's big head."
"Lonnie was a champ too," Jay said, ignoring Lonnie's comment about the size of his head. She'd just given birth without any pain medicine, she could make all the comments she wanted.
"Of course she was," Mushu said as he scurried up onto the bedside table. "That's my guardainee's daughter after all!"
Jay shook his head. "Is 'guardainee' a word?"
"You're asking if the pint-sized dragon who thought a horse was a cow is making up a word?" Lonnie asked.
"Hey! He's travel sized for our convenience," Jay chuckled as the nurse came in with a baby Mulan could only presume to be Jaxson, cooing happily in his blue blanket.
"Here he is, all cleaned off and excited to see mom," the nurse said as she handed Jaxson to Lonnie, who readily took him into her arms. The nurse turned to look at Jay before speaking. "Dad, I'm going to need some information from you for the birth certificate. Do you mind if I tear you away for a bit?"
"I…um…Lon, are you going to be okay?"
"Go on Jay," Lonnie said with a small chuckle. "I know you're not going to change Jaxson's name on me, and plus I've got mom here so it's not as if I'm lacking in protection. We'll be fine."
"Okay…" Jay said with a small smile. "I'll be back though."
"I never doubted you wouldn't be back," Lonnie told him. "Mom and I will likely just be talking about how we gave Ally's daughter a new playmate. Remember? Her due date's near the end of July."
"Oh yeah," Jay nodded. "Uma's been talking non stop about how Freddie's been on practically tenterhooks as they get closer to the due date. I wonder how I forgot that?"
"Your mind has been understandably distracted Jay," Lonnie said with a small smile.
Jay gave her another small smile before following the nurse out of the room.
Lonnie shook her head and looked back at Mulan. "You know the nurse brought up a good point. Speaking of 'dad'…where is dad? I didn't think you'd come by yourself mom."
"He was parking the car, he should be in soon," Mulan explained. Just as she finished her sentence, Shang walked into the room.
"You all talking about me?"
"Just a little dad," Lonnie said with a small chuckle as Jaxson cooed, seemingly in agreement. "Seems your grandson agrees with us."
"Well I'm sorry I'm late but I ran into some very important guests," Shang said as Li'l Shang and Jordan walked into the room.
"Don't tell me I interrupted your proposal!" Lonnie exclaimed, her eyes wide as she looked at the ring on Jordan's finger.
Li'l Shang shook his head. "I actually had called mom to tell her and dad the news when you called, Lon. And even if you did, I think news of my nephew joining the world would be worth the interruption."
"I agree," Jordan nodded.
"Thanks you guys," Lonnie smiled. "But now, Jordan, let me see that ring!"
"Only if you let me hold my nephew!" Li'l Shang said.
"Deal!"
Jordan chuckled as her now fiancé gently held the newest member of the Li family in his arms, before she held out her left hand so that Lonnie could see the ring. It was truly a beautiful ring, with a diamond in the shape of a heart surrounded by what looked to be a double halo of dark pink, dark blue, and light blue stones surrounding it. The silver band itself had additional stones adorning the split while not making their way completely down the band.
"It's beautiful," Lonnie said as Jordan took her hand back. "My brother has good taste."
"In both rings and fiancees," Jordan said, gently teasing Li'l Shang with a small smile.
Mushu popped up. "Wait, who's getting married?"
"I am, Mushu," Li'l Shang said, gently wrapping his arm around Jordan's shoulder and holding her close; having given Jaxson back to his mother before doing so.
"Oh this is wonderful!" Mushu grinned and scurried to go onto Li'l Shang's shoulders. "Now, remember you have to combine your family's guardians with her's otherwise I can't be guardian to whatever kiddo you have. Ooh I have to come up with a theme! I had so much fun planning your parents' wedding though someone decided to go and elope so I couldn't plan her's."
"I don't even know if Jordan has guardians, being part Genie," Li'l Shang said with a small chuckle as Lonnie playfully stuck her tongue out at Mushu. "Besides, I think there's something more important to focus on here. I don't want to take attention away from my nephew…and where's Jay?"
"Good question," Shang said as he glanced around the room.
"The nurse needed him to help fill out the birth certificate," Mulan said, shaking her head. "He even asked Lonnie if she was okay with him leaving so you two can just relax."
Jay chuckled as he walked back in. "Appreciate the defense and apologies for being late, there was a lot more information that what I was expecting."
"You're just in time," Lonnie told him as Jaxson began to fuss. "And I think he's getting hungry."
Jay smiled and held up a bottle of formula. "I can take first feeding Lon, if you want to sleep. I know it was a quick delivery but you were up all last night with back pain."
"Jay…I couldn't ask you to—."
"You're not, I'm offering. Besides, I'm not going to let my kid go hungry," Jay said and Lonnie smiled as she handed Jaxson to Jay. She knew how much those words meant coming from Jay.
"We'll let you get some sleep honey," Mulan said and gently kissed Lonnie on the top of her head. "Congratulations Lonnie."
"Thanks mom," Lonnie said with a small smile even as her eyes began to close. Mulan quickly and quietly began to usher everyone who wasn't Jay out of the room and Jay went over to sit in the chair Mulan had vacated.
Gently putting the bottle to his son's lips, Jay smiled as Jaxson began to take the formula. "There we go bud, and don't you worry. There'll be plenty more where that came from. I promise you, you won't have to worry about food or your safety or if you're loved. Because if there's one thing I know is that your family would move Olympus itself to make sure you were safe and fed and loved."
Jaxson cooed softly as he continued to eat and Jay smiled. "Welcome to the world bud. It may be insane but it's a lot better now that you're here," he whispered as he leaned back in his chair.
He had to admit, it was a little weird thinking of himself as a father. But now that it was real? There was no other title he wanted.
