Mission 9: Haro the Helper

Amuro and Haibara were on the couch, watching TV as they plotted their next move to outsmart the man living next door.

"I don't know what else we could do." Haibara sighed. "If we had some assistance, maybe we could think of something."

"Assistance?" Amuro glanced at the television. There was a dog show airing. With a simple snap of the finger, the dogs were able to show off fantastic tricks and skills.

"...That's it!" Amuro jumped up, surprising Haibara.

"Wha…What's it?"

"Meet me at my place after school tomorrow." He grinned. "I have a great idea."

Haibara raised an eyebrow in doubt.

"If you say so…"

.

.

.

"So?" Haibara said with her hands on her hips. "What's this so-called 'great idea' of yours?"

"Just a moment…" Amuro grinned as he opened the door to his apartment.

"Haro!" Amuro whistled. "Here boy!"

A small white dog ran up to the two, wagging his tail.

"Amuro-san…" Haibara said as she knelt down to pet the puppy.

"I know, isn't he cute?" He smiled.

"Please don't tell me you got a dog just to use against Subaru Okiya." She looked at him with disdain.

"What?! No, of course not!" He huffed. "I've had him for a little bit, I just wanted to house train him a bit before introducing him to others."

"Oh, ok!" She smiled as she continued to play with Haro.

'"But we WILL be using him in a counter-attack against Subaru-san."

"..."

"Aren't you going to ask me how?" He said confidently.

"..."

She sighed. "How are we going to use Haro?"

"It's simple really." He smiled. "I'll train Haro to nip at Subaru-san's neck. When he's distracted, we can rip his collar right off, and finally reveal him!"

"Even if you managed to train Haro to do something like that, how are you supposed to get him to nip at only Subaru-san?"

"Tsk tsk." Amuro waved his finger, much to Haibara's annoyance. "Easy! I'll have a signal. That way, Haro will only do it if I command him."

"And this signal will be…"

"I dunno." Amuro shrugged. "Maybe a snap or something?"

"You don't think that'll be a little obvious?" Haibara crossed her arms. "Besides, I don't know if we should use this little cutie in our plans…" She smiled at Haro, who was circling around her feet.

"Haro is happy to do it!" Amuro exclaimed. "As of today, he's an honorary police dog. It's his way of serving justice, right Haro?"

Haro happily went back to his dog bed to take a nap.

"Exactly. Get all the rest you need to fight crime. Good dog!"

"...are you an idiot, Amuro-san?"

.

.

.

Amuro sat on his couch with a wig, glasses, and high-collar shirt.

"Okay, pretend I'm Subaru-san!"

"Pfft…" Haibara tried to hold in a laugh. "Nice disguise, Amuro-san."

"Focus, Haibara-chan!" He said in a stern tone, trying to copy Subaru's voice. "Okay, do it."

She sighed. "….Curry!"

Haro looked up, wagging his tail. No nipping, though.

"I told you this is not going to work…"

"He just needs practice!" Amuro huffed. "Here, I'll try…"

He cleared his throat. "Curry!"

Haro ran up to his owner, licking his face.

"...Well, it's a start." Haibara yawned. "I'm going home, good luck with….all this."

"Alright. Good night, Haibara-chan!" Amuro cleared his throat. "I mean, good night Haibara-chan." He said in another Subaru impression.

Haibara shook her head as she exited.

2 WEEKS LATER

"Today's the day!" Amuro said excitedly.

"You sure are confident." Haibara smirked. "You think it'll actually work?"

"Of course! I've been training Haro day and night, he's finally getting the hang of it!"

"Mmhmmm…." Haibara hummed in disbelief.

Amuro rang the door of the Kudo residence. Of course, Subaru Okiya came out to greet them.

"Ah, pleasure to see you too as always." He smiled. "What brings you here?"

"Oh, we just wanted to hang out with our favorite neighbor!" Amuro smiled. "Mind if we come in?"

"Of course." Subaru looked down at the white dog sniffing around the gate. "And who might this be?"

"Ah, this is Haro." Amuro said as they entered the home. "Would you like to pet him?"

"That's alright." Subaru shook his head. "I have a slight dog allergy, so I'd like to keep my distance from him, if you don't mind."

"Ah, there's no need." Amuro chuckled. 'You're not getting out of this that easily...'

"Haro here is a hypoallergenic breed!"

"Oh, in that case…" Subaru kneeled down, welcoming the dog.

Haro rushed up to Subaru, happily being pet by him.

'Damn, seeing Haro be so friendly with the enemy is hard to watch…' Amuro shook his head. 'No matter, he won't be for long…'

"So, what did you have for dinner, Subaru-san? Let me guess, the usual…"

"Ramen."

"...Eh?"

"I had ramen for dinner. There's a new place nearby, so I wanted to give it a try. It was pretty good!"

"What did you have for lunch?" Haibara asked.

"You're very curious today, aren't you?" Subaru smirked. "Let's see… I just had a salad and some iced tea."

"Really?" Amuro raised an eyebrow.

"Yes, is that okay?" Subaru chuckled. "I had some eggs and toast for breakfast, if you're wondering about that as well."

"Well, we were just surprised." Amuro narrowed his eyes. "Since your favorite dish seems to be…"

"That would be sukiyaki!"

"..."

"Stop playing games, Subaru! You know it's curry!" Amuro yelled.

Upon hearing the word, Haro quickly jumped onto Amuro's body, nipping at his neck.

"Agh! Haro, no!" Amuro cried out.

It seems that despite the training in disguise, Haro had learned to strike his owner only. What a smart dog!

"Ahh, now that you mention it, I do enjoy curry now and then." Subaru looked at Haibara, ignoring Amuro and Haro.

"In fact, I've been interested in many types of curry lately! Japanese curry, Indian curry, Ethiopian curry…"

With each utterance of the word, Haro continued to tackle Amuro's neck.

Haibara simply stared at the scene, unsure of how she managed to get to this point in her life.

"Dammit, stop saying that word!" Amuro called out, finally able to calm down Haro.

"Oh my, Haro is very excited!" Subaru smiled. "I guess that's to be expected for puppies."

"I knew this wasn't gonna work…" Haibara mumbled.

The two eventually took their leave, disappointed by another failed mission.

.

.

.

Amuro was at home, flipping through the channels on his television. Haro was relaxing in his lap, happy to have such an eventful day.

"It's okay, buddy. You're still an honorary police dog..." He said as he pet the puppy.

'On today's cooking segment with Yoko Okino, we'll be making a simple but delicious curry!'

Amuro gulped, looking down at Haro, who had already secured his target.

"No, Haro!"

THE NEXT DAY

Amuro arrived at the Beika Bark Obedience School, head slumped over in defeat.

"So let me get this straight…" The trainer narrowed her eyes at Amuro.

"Your dog nips at your neck whenever he hears the word-"

"Shh! Don't say it out loud!"

"...uh-huh…" She pet Haro, well-behaved as usual. "And this just happened out of nowhere? Nothing caused him to do this sudden change?"

"Nope. Nothing at all!" Amuro shrugged dramatically.

"Well, this is one strange request…but I'm sure we can manage it!" The trainer smiled. "Here's the estimated bill."

"Urgh!" Amuro almost had a heart attack at the insanely large number.

With a bit of training at the school, Haro eventually learned to stop his curry-nipping tendencies.

Amuro also learned an expensive and painful lesson about using pets for personal gain.

It's been so long since I've updated this fic! I've been wanting to do a few more stories for this one for a while, so I'm glad to finally have something up. I also have another story planned with similar vibes to this with Akai, Rei, and Shiho, so stay tuned for that!
