The sun shone into the living room, waking the siblings from their sleep. Sean was the first to stir, blinking his eyes open until they adjusted to the light. He sat up and rested on his elbows to check on his sister, who was still sleeping. The sight of her reminded him of the conversation they had the night before. It felt so good that he no longer had to hide his feelings from everyone.
Serenity started to moan as she awoke, causing Sean to lay back down onto his bed. Her eyes fluttered open, "Sean, you awake?"
"Yeah."
"What time is it?"
He flipped open his cell phone, "7:03. Time to get ready for school."
Serenity's heart began to race with both excitement and fear about her first day. She sat up and tied her hair into a loose bun with the hair tie from around her wrist.
"What time should we leave?" She asked as she headed for the kitchen.
"Meet me in the car at 8:00. I want to show you around before classes start."
She nodded to her brother as she walked away and smiled out of hi sight. As he reached the kitchen, she was surprised to be met with Jay, who was sitting at the table with a mug of coffee. She jumped at sight of him and felt her cheeks burn red with embarrassment; she knew how scary she must have looked first thing in the morning.
"Hey," he smiled after taking a sip, "how'd you sleep?"
She was relieved that he refrained from making any jokes at her expense, "pretty good."
"Thanks for letting us crash here."
Jay scoffed, "Sean's like a brother to me. Anyone close to him, is cool in my books, too."
She ran the tap for a few seconds until the water was cold and filled a glass, "what are you doing up so early, anyways?"
"Work." He rolled his eyes.
She nodded a few times, stopping to take a sip of her water. It was early, and Serenity herself wasn't much of a morning person, so she opted to leave him be and not bombarde him with conversation first thing. As she headed for the doorway, Jay spoke again.
"Oh, and nice hair." He chuckled. She turned around, revealing that Cameron smirk and rolled her eyes. She didn't want him to know she was now absolutely mortified.
On her way to the bathroom, she checked the clock Jay had on the wall in the hallway. 7:10. She hurried to the door at the end of the corridor and shut it behind her. The mirror confirmed her suspicions on how disheveled she looked. Her features matched that of her brother's; light brown hair and blue eyes. However now, her long brown locks were a knotted mess. The girl fought with her hair and was able to settle with a half-up style. Then once cleaning the sleep from her face and brushing her teeth, she headed to the living room for her suitcase. There, she chose a black track suit with a hot pink crop top beneath the unzipped hoodie. She then returned to the bathroom where she applied mascara and lipgloss, before heading back to the kitchen.
This time, Jay was at the counter placing his dirty mug in the sink. He stopped at the sight of Serenity. She dressed just like all the other girls he pursued in the past, and to say that he was intrigued by his best friend's little sister was an understatement. He couldn't ignore how good she looked.
"Now that's better," he smirked playfully.
Unfortunately for him, Serenity wasn't interested in any of his jokes. Just as fast as she had entered the kitchen, she turned back to leave.
"Hey, I'm just joking, Lil' Cam," his tone softened as he reached to grab her upper arm gently. The gesture earned a soft hiss of pain from the girl as she yanked her arm from his grasp. "I didn't mean to hurt you."
His eyes filled with worry. He knew he didn't grab her that hard. She pressed her hand to the area gently, narrowing her eyes at him.
"It's okay," she lied, "I'm fine. I gotta meet Sean at the car now."
Jay didn't know the girl very well yet, but he knew there was something going on.
"Hey, slow poke," Sean chuckled, standing up from his lean against the driver door, "ready for your first day at Degrassi?"
At the sight of her brother, and how excited he was to go back, she couldn't help but smile. The memory of what happened between her and Jay only moments ago suddenly washed away.
"Ready as I'll ever be!"
As she approached her brother, he rolled his eyes.
"What?"
"Your outfit," he tugged on her hood as she walked past, "not interested in laying low your first day, huh?"
She just rolled her eyes. Her brother always bugged her about her outfit choices, which was rich coming from the guy who used to dress like Slim Shady's long lost twin, she thought.
Serenity ducked into the vehicle, joined by Sean moments later. He started the car, and suddenly reality set in for her; she was about to embark on a whole new journey, in a brand new city, where the only person she had was her brother.
"I can't wait to get back, Ren," Sean was practically jumping out of his seat, "back to Degrassi, old friends..."
"...and Emma?"
Sean's face lit up at just the mention of her name.
"But what about Ellie? Will you at least talk to her?"
His face fell just as quick as the smile that had just been present.
"I know the way I left things here were not ideal," he started; sounding more optimistic than she had expected, "but I'm here to make amends. Don't worry about me, okay?"
"Okay, I'll leave it alone now. You seem like you've figured it all out."
He nodded once, confidently, with the Cameron smirk making an appearance on his lips.
"I'm proud of you, you know?"
She looked over at her brother, who was now preoccupied by backing into a spot in the Degrassi parking lot. He put the car in park and smiled coyly, looking up from the car floor to the sincere look in Serenity's eyes.
"I know," his smile only grew bigger, "I've come a long way; I've grown and changed since the last time I was here. I'm proud of me, too, Ren."
She could feel the tears burn at her eyes, but she managed to blink them away. If someone were to have told her a few years ago that this was the man her brother would turn into, she would never have believed them.
"Alright," Serenity attempted to lighten the mood, "lets get our last year of high school started, hm?"
Sean agreed, leading his litter sister to the front doors. Stopping at the bottom step, she was in awe that she was about to step foot in the Degrassi Community School. He placed a hand on her shoulder as they made their way up the steps and through the door. The siblings stopped by the office for her class schedule and locker combination.
"Do I have any classes with you?" She asked her brother, not taking her eyes off her schedule as she walked. Sean peeked over at the paper, "only math."
As they approached her locker, she was stopped abruptly by a figure who stood in her path. They crashed into one another, almost knocking her off of her feet.
"I'm so sorry," her face burned red, "I should've been paying more attention to where I was going."
She looked over to Sean, who was stifling a laugh at her expense.
The unknown boy turned around, "don't worry about-"
As he laid eyes on Serenity, he stopped dead in his tracks. He practically had to pick his jaw up off the floor. Sean realized what was going on, and stepped up next to her.
"Serenity, this is J.T.," she waved at the boy, "J.T., this is Serenity, my sister."
J.T. was snapped out of his trance upon hearing who she was. He could sense that Sean would pummel him if he so much as flirted with her. But a boy could admire from a distance, he thought.
He cleared his throat, "hey, it's nice to meet you."
"You, too," she smiled as she walked by him and to her locker, which happened to be right next to his.
"Looks like we're locker buddies." he chuckled. She smiled in response, knowing he'd be a friendly face to welcome her every morning.
"I still have other places to show you, Ren," Sean interrupted the two, pulling her by the elbow away from the boy.
"What's the rush?" She growled.
"Class will be starting soon, and I still want to show you around a bit."
As they turned the corner, he stopped in his tracks. It was Emma, Peter and Manny. Serenity looked over at her brother and couldn't help but notice his smile. Emma noticed him then, too, and waved the siblings over; much to Peter's dismay.
"Time to work your Cameron magic, Sean-y," she teased, "third time's a charm."
He shook his head and playfully slugged his sister in the arm as they approached the three. He knew that Peter didn't stand a chance against him.
