Chapter 1: What's the point?

A/N: I don't know why I keep doing this where I write a story when I'm in the middle of a million other stories. It's like once I have an idea in my head, I need to write it out lol.

I'm brand new to the whole Resident Evil universe but after seeing the remake of Resident Evil 4 and that a new animated movie is coming out, I couldn't resist. My heart goes out for Leon and I feel like he needs some love after all he's endured. So, here's my take on doing a romantic story in a zombie apocalyptic world.

This takes place shortly after the Damnation movie. Can our favorite cop turned agent find love with the world going to Hell?

Just want to warn you that there is a slight age gap so if that's not your thing here's your warning.

Disclaimer: I don't own Resident Evil; I just own my characters.

Enjoy!

"It's been three days since the end of the civil war that tore through the Eastern Slav Republic. The fierce battles were halted thanks to the intervention of American and Russian troops"

Leon took a shot of whiskey as he stared at the television. The news was talking about what happened, but he knew the truth. As always, they liked to cover up the grim reality of events and morph them into something to their liking.

"A temporary government headed by the U.S. and Russia will be set up in the Eastern Slav Republic" Hunnigan said over the phone.

"Svetlana Belikova has resigned from her presidency and all of the companies that supported her and the former government will be thrown out of the country and dismantled"

Leon heard what she was saying but at the same time he didn't.

"Top brass knew about it right from the beginning, didn't they?

He made it sound like a question but he was really stating facts.

"The report from Scarecrow tipped them off that Svetlana was in possession of B.O.W's. That's why they pulled out in a panic and ran like Hell to join forces with the Russians-to protect themselves, right?"

"You're mistaken. The president had nothing to do with this. Not even we knew what was going on. You have to believe me" Hunnigan said.

Silence was all she heard.

This job was starting to become too much for him. No matter what he or the D.S.O. did, there was always going to be something that slipped through the cracks. If he tried to patch up one little spot the government would paint over the cracks and make it seem like nothing was wrong. Even if they covered it up, the cracks would still be there.

What was the point in all of this if his efforts were going to be covered up?

"Leon!" Hunnigan said.

"Don't- "

"I'm not going anywhere" he snapped as he hung up.

He wasn't going to storm off and leave. Even if this job had made him bitter and numb he wasn't going to walk away. There was no walking away after the things he had seen.

"Nothing is going to change" he said to himself.

Downing one last shot of whiskey, he left his room.

After all he had seen, all that he had fought for and lost, he started to wonder what was the point in still fighting?

Rounding the corner, Rachel slammed into the wall. Looking over her shoulder, she quickly hurried down the hall as someone chased after her.

"Get back here!"

She ignored them and ran like crazy. She couldn't get caught!

Searching the many doors that made up the hallway, she spotted the one she was looking for and dove for it. Turning the handle, she fell into the room, landing flat on her face as she did so.

"Late again"

Rachel looked up to see her instructor staring at her with crossed arms. Behind her, the security guard caught up to the classroom.

"Thought you could get past me, little lady?"

Rachel looked at the guard fearfully. Behind her she could hear her classmates snickering. The instructor silenced them then looked at the security guard.

"Just let it go, Marcus. She's only five minutes late."

Marcus made a face. He was hoping he would finally reprimand a student for breaking the rules. He looked at Rachel and made the 'I'm watching you' gesture before storming away.

Rachel sighed with relief. That was a close one. She thought she was a goner this time.

"Rachel"

She flinched and slowly looked back at her instructor. That's right. She still had to worry about him.

"Yes, professor?"

"You know that if you're late for my class five times, I'll kick you out. This is the fifth time" he said.

Rachel looked at him helplessly.

"I'm sorry, sir! I was running late from my shift and almost left my notes in my locker and had to go back for them. I swear this won't happen again!"

"You said that last time and yet you did it again."

Rachel whimpered a little. She really did it now. This class was tough to get into and here she was running late and making a joke out of herself.

Her instructor sighed and held the bridge of his nose.

"Just go sit down" he sighed.

Rachel quickly scrambled to her feet and hurried to her desk. Her classmate and best friend, Isabella, smirked.

"Face diving into class? Now that's impressive."

Rachel's face turned red as she pulled out her textbook.

"I made it here on time, but I ran into Jeremy and he wouldn't leave me alone. I had to agree to go get drinks with him this weekend so he would go away."

Isabella scoffed at that.

"When is he going to realize you're not interested in him?"

"Miss. Rameriz, if you're in the mood to talk, then perhaps you can answer the question I just asked" their instructor said.

Isabella rolled her eyes.

"Yeah, yeah"

Rachel buried her face in her textbook and quietly took her notes. She couldn't make anymore screw ups today.

/

"That's all for today. For your next assignment, I want a five page thesis on the nervous system and point out certain parts of how it functions. Class dismissed"

Everyone stood up from their desks and started leaving the classroom. Rachel gathered all of her things and threw them in her messenger bag before she left.

"Just a moment, Rachel. I need to have a word with you" her instructor said.

Isabella mouthed 'I'll meet you outside' as she passed her. When everyone left Rachel looked at her instructor sheepishly. The older man took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes.

"I understand you have to work at the clinic as part of your curriculum, but you need to also be punctual. Patients don't like to wait for late doctors" he said.

Rachel bit her lip. She knew she deserved getting lectured, but it still didn't feel good.

"You're one of my hardest working students and you make an effort in wanting to learn but coming to class late all the time doesn't show it. You're better than this."

Rachel gripped her bag when she heard that. Those words were supposed to be motivating but not for her.

"Why can't you be better?!"

Her instructor didn't know what was going on in her head and just continued on.

"I gave you a pass this time, but I won't next time" he warned.

"If you're late to my class again, the door will be locked and I'll have you flunked from this course. Do I make myself clear?"

Rachel quickly nodded her head.

"Yes, sir"

"Good. Now go enjoy your weekend. I look forward to your thesis, you always come up with interesting points"

Rachel left the classroom. Sighing in defeat, she dragged her feet out onto the campus grounds. She had to do better. She wanted to become a doctor so she could help people but if she flunked even one of her classes she was done for. She worked her ass off to get a scholarship at one of the best schools in the U.S. she couldn't ruin this.

"I just have one more year of this" she told herself.

She could do this. She just had to continue studying and then it would all pay off.

With that in mind, she decided to head back to her dorm and focus on writing her paper. If she wrote it well enough perhaps her instructor would forgive her for being late.

"Rachel! There you are!"

An arm wrapped around her shoulders and pulled her into a painful hug. Looking at said owner of the arm, she was upset to see that it was Jermey. It seemed he had been waiting for her to finish her classes.

Jeremy was two years older than her. Like her, he was studying to become a doctor. He was always helping others with their courses and gave them advice. He was popular on campus and everyone wanted to be around him.

Well, everyone except Rachel. She didn't know why, but she always had this gut feeling to stay away from him. When she first started attending to this University Jermey seemed to zone in on her and tried to be super friendly with her. He claimed that he was trying to look out for her and help out but she didn't get that feeling. She had this urge to stay away from him.

"So about earlier, I was thinking we could grab a few drinks at this bar my buddy works at" Jermey said.

Rachel smiled weakly and tried to pry his arm off.

"I actually have a paper to write so I don't think I can go tonight" she said.

Jeremy just pulled her into a tighter grip.

"Aw come on, you can't bail on me. You promised you would have a drink with me" he whined.

'More like you wouldn't leave me alone unless I said yes', she thought.

"It'll be fun. We can unwind and talk about how are classes have been and the best part is that my friend can give us discounts on our drinks"

The more he spoke the tighter his grip became. It was like he was telling her he wouldn't take no for an answer. She didn't know how she was going to get herself out of this one.

"Cheap drinks?! Count me in!"

Isabella appeared out of nowhere and pulled Rachel away from Jeremy.

"Why are you holding out on me, Rach? You didn't tell me Jer-bear could get us cheap drinks!" she said loudly.

At the mention of 'Jeremy' and 'drinks' a few heads perked up.

"Is Jeremy throwing a party?"

"I wanna go!"

"I won't pass up on free booze."

Jeremy put on a forced smile as a couple of people starting approaching him.

"I'm not throwing a party, it was just going to be the two of us, as in a da-"

"You can't have a party with just two people!" Isabella said.

"Come on! Let's start off the weekend with a bang! Party, party, party"

Soon everyone chanted 'party' as well. Being forced into a corner Jeremy had no choice but to give in to save face.

"Sure, fine, let's make it a party. We'll meet up at seven."

Everyone cheered at the prospect of booze and not studying. Jermey locked eyes with Rachel and kept his smile on his face.

"I look forward to seeing you there" he said.

Rachel gripped her bag and held it in front of her like a shield. Isabella steered her away and walked them towards the other end of the campus.

"I swear that prick has never been told no his entire life" Isabella growled.

Rachel let out the breath that she didn't realize she was holding in. Thank goodness Isabella was there when she needed her.

"I'm sorry you had to do that, Issy" she said.

Isabella waved her hand at her.

"Please, I have no problem running that pricks tab up. Maybe after he sees how big his bill will be, then he'll leave you alone"

"I don't know why he keeps bugging me. I never made the effort to talk to him when I first met him."

"He's a guy, Rach. There's only one thing on their mind and once it's stuck in their head it won't go away" Isabella said.

Rachel shuddered at what she was implying. Why did guys have to be so gross?

"Do you think we'll be able to skip this party since so many people are going now?" she asked.

"Probably not since I have a feeling he'll look for you and make sure you show up" Isabella said.

"We'll just go there, have a drink or two and when it gets late, we'll sneak out while everyone is shit faced."

Rachel didn't like this idea but what choice did she have? If she went, she knew Jeremy would bug her but if she didn't go, he would hound her down asking why she never showed up. She couldn't win this.

"I hope he graduates soon so he'll leave us alone" she sighed.

"Oh Rachel, you're funny. You think he actually came here to learn" Isabella joked.

Rachel didn't see the point in going to this party. It wouldn't do her any good. She wouldn't get anything out of it.

Well…maybe not yet.

A/N: Well, we're off! Seems like Rachel might get something out of this party but what will it be?

Please review and tell me what you think!

Take care!
