Madison sat nervously at the table as Shinji moved in behind Crystal. "Need a hand?"
"I've got it," the blonde grinned. "Go sit down and wait."
"Alright. If you say so."
"I do!" Rolling his eyes, Shinji moved over to the table and sat down across from Madison. A moment later, Crystal asked, "So. Madison, right?"
Madison flinched. "Yes, uh, ma'am? Ms. Dallon? Laserdream?"
Crystal scoffed. "That's my aunt, and my mom is Mrs. Pelham. I'm out of costume. Just Crystal is fine."
"Alright," the brunette agreed, before looking to Shinji for help.
The detective simply shrugged—not the lifeline Madison was looking for. Crystal finished cutting vegetables and scraped them off into a skillet, filling the kitchen with the sizzle of cooking vegetables and a smell that made Madison's mouth water. "So, why'd you do it?"
"Huh?" Madison blinked, momentarily lost.
"My aunt is handling the Heberts' case. I've read up on everything that's available to her, and what was done to her was awful. So, that's what I want to know. Why'd you do it? You, specifically, Madison. What was your reason for going along with this insanity?" Crystal asked as she left the vegetables to saute and moved over to a metal bowl full of meat that she began to break into chunks and roll into balls—some of which, she stuffed with little blocks of cheese.
"I don't kn—" Shinji's snapping fingers drew her attention to him and she flinched. Looking down at the table, Madison corrected herself. "Look, you don't understand. You're Laserdream. You're a hero. Your whole family are heroes. You're sexy, confident. I'm just… me. Normal. 'Cute little Madison.' You've never had to put up with the same shit the rest of us do. Every girl wants to be your BFF one day, then the next they're making fun of you and telling your secrets to their real friends and turning everyone in the school against you. I've known Emma for a few years because we were neighbors, but not as long as Taylor, and I knew Taylor through Emma. Well, I saw her a few times at Emma's birthday parties, but we never really talked, you know?"
Madison shook her head, pausing for a moment to gather her thoughts. Finally, she said, "Emma and Taylor were like sisters. That much was obvious even with how little I saw of them together. Then something happened the summer before our freshman year. I never got the story out of Emma, but that was when Sophia started hanging around. Talking about a bunch of crazy 'predator and prey' shit, and Emma just… ate it up. She looked to Sophia for everything for a while. Emma had to check with Sophia before having an opinion of her own. For whatever reason, Sophia decided Taylor was weak and Emma needed to cut her out of her life. Emma turned against the girl she treated like a sister for years, on Sophia's say so. It was crazy. They were crazy. I realized that if she'd turn on someone she loved like a sister at the drop of a hat, then she'd do the same to anyone.
"Emma's hot. So is Sophia. Emma's popular and Sophia is the school's best runner on the track team. I'm just cute little Madison. I'm not you. It's no contest who the school would choose if it came to it. I saw what they put Taylor through and… I'm not that strong. I can't live with that. Having the entire school treat me like crap? I'd probably just kill myself. So that's why I went along with it. Because when she eventually got bored with Taylor, I didn't want to be next. People say you should stand up against bullying or people doing bad things, but those people don't have to live with the consequences of it. With having their own life ruined, because they made themselves a target. And I'm not blind—neither is anyone else. None of the teachers were doing anything about it, even when they knew. I mean, I just blatantly flaunted it in Gladly's class trying to make him say something, but he didn't do shit. Sophia and Emma have carte blanche and everyone knows it. Why would anyone stand up for Taylor when even the teachers aren't doing anything? What the hell was I supposed to do, knowing the teachers and the principal wouldn't have my back?!"
Shinji reached out and laid his hand on top of Madison's, and the girl fell silent. Her face was red and she looked frustrated. Before she could say anything else, Crystal spoke up, drawing the girl's attention as she began dropping balls of meat into a skillet. "I get it. And you're wrong. Ask Shinji. You think fame insulates you against high school bullshit? I wish."
"It really doesn't," Shinji shook his head. "And you think she always looked like that?"
"Well, not always, but—" Madison started, only for Crystal to laugh.
Shinji dug out his wallet and opened it up. Fishing out a photo, he passed it to Madison. Crystal turned just in time to look over Shinji's shoulder, before grinning. "You kept that? I thought you hated it."
"It was a good day," he shrugged, remembering the day the picture was taken. The pair of them sharing a photo booth at the state fair. Crystal with a big smile and her face painted. Shinji looking a bit put upon as he rolled his eyes. The Crystal in the picture was short, flat, and tiny.
Madison studied the picture, before looking up at Crystal, her mouth falling open. "No way."
"Yes way," Crystal chuckled. Reaching back, she slapped her own jean-covered ass and grinned. "I wasn't always this sexy. Good living and a lot of time spent in the gym. Also, the titty fairy paying me a visit for puberty. So yeah, I get it." Opening the bag she'd brought with her, she opened up a box of pasta and dumped it into a pot of boiling water, before starting on what looked to Shinji like a sauce. "Why'd you agree to help Shinji, if you're worried about what everyone else will do?"
At that, Madison clammed up and blushed a bright scarlet. Shinji chuckled, letting go of her hand and leaning back in his chair. "I didn't exactly give her a choice—"
"You hush," Crystal chastised, pointing a steaming wooden spoon at him from where she'd been stirring the pasta.
"Alright," Shinji held up his hands in surrender.
Crystal shifted her spoon to aim at Madison. "Spill!"
"Yes ma'am!" the brunette answered reflexively, before wincing as she blushed harder. "Uh, I mean, that is… fuck," Madison sighed. "He's hot, okay?! Sexy bad boy corrupt cop—"
"I'm not corrupt," Shinji grumbled.
"Brockton Bay," Crystal countered. "It's a safe assumption. Go on."
"Sexy bad boy wanted to play bad cop and it really got my motor running. I rode him in his car. It was hot as fuck," Madison turned a leer on Shinji. "Hottest thing in my life. I've never come that hard or often before."
Crystal snorted softly. "Yeah, he does that."
"So yeah, I mean, sexy bad boy. Cop. He actually gives a fuck. He doesn't talk down to me unless it's sexy time. He pushes all my buttons. And he offered to keep my ass out of jail. Once this is over, I won't have to deal with Emma and Sophia, most of the staff at Winslow are probably going to be fired, so I don't really have anything to worry about there."
Nodding, Crystal began adding sauteed vegetables to her sauce. "So, where do you see yourself after all of that's said and done?"
Looking between Crystal and Shinji, Madison chewed her lower lip. "I don't know? I hadn't thought that far ahead, if I'm being honest. If you're his girlfriend," she hesitated, before asking, "Why aren't you mad about us sleeping together? Or are you some kind of swingers or something?"
"Or something," Crystal shrugged. "So has he told you he's a cape?"
"You're a cape?!" Madison asked, looking at Shinji with new eyes… and a certain lusty look Shinji recognized, as his power told him that fact turned her on.
Shinji sighed. "Not yet."
Nodding, Crystal turned off the burners and drained the pasta, before putting it in a bowl. She made a couple of trips back and forth to the table, setting out food. Shinji got up and took care of plates, glasses, silverware, and a jug of sweet tea Crystal had put in the refrigerator. Finally, they sat and began piling pasta, meatballs, and sauce onto their plates.
Unable to take it any more, Madison asked, "What kind of cape are you?"
Shinji opened his mouth to speak but Crystal beat him to it. "Heartbreaker lite."
"Crystal," he snapped, but the blonde turned and stuck out her tongue. "You're making it sound way worse than it is."
Madison had gone wide-eyed at that. Surprisingly, and to Shinji's mild annoyance, that only turned Madison on more. "But you are…?"
Shinji sighed as Crystal nodded, grinning. "Yeah. It's a sex power. Basically, the best sex of your life. You're never going to get better. Also, maybe a bit of a Master component. Shinji thinks it's bad, but," Crystal shrugged. "I haven't really noticed it if so."
"But if you were Mastered—"
Crystal held up a hand, cutting her off. "Yeah, I know. But I made the choice long before we ever had sex and I haven't noticed a difference. So, is that gonna be a problem?"
Madison glanced between Shinji and Crystal before finally shaking her head. "Ah, n-no. It, it won't."
"It makes her horny," Shinji explained, when Crystal sent him a raised eyebrow.
Madison nodded, looking embarrassed. "I uh… yeah? I kind of… like the idea of not, um, not having control. Or a say in it. Just, just turn off my brain and follow instructions. Not have to worry or think about it."
Humming, Crystal quietly asked, "Is that also why you did what Emma said? Because it was easy?"
Madison opened her mouth to deny it, only to pause. Frowning, she used a bit more force than necessary to spear a meatball and pop it into her mouth. She bit down and made a surprised noise as she chewed, before swallowing and asking, "Mozzarella?"
"Mhmm," Crystal grinned, spearing one of her own and dipping it in her sauce.
The brunette rolled up some pasta on her fork and groaned. "Maybe? I don't know. I guess I like… being helpful? I hated the thing with Emma and Sophia, because I was always worried that I'd be next. But with Shinji," she considered for a moment and continued, "I like it when he tells me to do stuff for him. I like doing it. And he doesn't make me feel like he might turn on me at some point."
Crystal mulled that over as she ate. Looking to Shinji, she asked, "What are you going to do about Emma Barnes and Sophia Hess?"
Shinji gestured towards Madison. "Same thing. Apply pressure until they crack, get them under control, then move on the faculty. Offer to put in a good word for them with the DA if they confess and testify willingly. Madison will probably get off with a slap on the wrist, but those two are probably going to do some time in juvie. Probably mandatory therapy, too."
The blonde studied him for a moment, before glancing at Madison and back to Shinji. "I think that's a mistake."
"Why's that?"
"Waste of resources, for one thing." Shinji raised an eyebrow and she explained. "I've been over the case and there's no way half the shit Taylor is accusing them of could've been done without powers. So either Barnes is a previously unknown cape with powers that let her do things like fill a locker full of a couple of garbage cans worth of used tampons and stuff without spilling anything, or Hess is Shadow Stalker. And considering I've been on joint patrols with the Wards and recognize her voice…"
"Wait, what?" Madison blinked, and Shinji and Crystal both nodded.
"Hess is definitely Stalker," Shinji nodded. "She confirms it in her private texts to Barnes."
Not that he had needed proof, since he was working backwards from an answer there, but it was always nice to have. Now, if only I could remember who the other capes are.
"That explains so much," Madison sighed. "And the school knows, so they let her get away with whatever, and Emma too since they're friends."
"Pretty much. That's what I think the DA is going to base the case on." Sending Crystal a look, Shinji asked, "I thought we talked about this."
"We did. And I still say there's no reason not to. You'd basically have a pet ninja on call once you got her under control."
Shinji glanced at Madison, considering his next words. "There are other circumstances to consider that make using Hess or Barnes long term a bad idea. Madison is iffy—"
"I can be useful!" the brunette chimed in upon hearing what sounded very much like Shinji talking about getting rid of her. "I can make your coffee, or learn to cook, help organize your stuff, whatever. I'll be your maid if you want! Or when you're home I can just sit under your desk and suck your cock while your work or whenever you want. But you don't have to get rid of me!"
Frowning, Crystal asked, "What's going on, Shinji?"
The detective shook his head. "Best not to talk about it now—"
Madison stood up and gathered her plate, moving over to the sink and washing it off. "If it's a secret, I'll go sit in the bedroom with the door closed."
Shinji eyed her for a moment before nodding. Madison hurried off to the bedroom and they heard the door close behind her. Getting up, Shinji quietly made his way back to the bedroom, before poking his head in and finding Madison sitting on the bed. She looked up at the door opening and sent him a smile. "I won't move from here until you call for me."
"Alright," Shinji agreed, closing the door and making his way back to the kitchen. He found Crystal already packing away the leftovers and took up their plates, spraying them off and putting them in the dishwasher with Madison's. Once they were finished, he and Crystal made their way outside onto his back porch.
Crystal made a face when Shinji pulled out his cigarettes and lit one, moving upwind. "Nasty."
"Actually, not so much," Shinji shook his head. "Your cousin did something to them."
"Amy? What do you mean?"
"Pretty sure she's not just a healer. When I spoke to her, I might have bribed her with cigarettes—"
"Shinji!" Crystal growled.
"She was smoking when I got there," he shrugged. "I promised I wouldn't tell her mom. She did something to them. First one I had after, I coughed up a lung full of black shit. Felt great, after."
Crystal blew out a sigh and nodded. "Alright. Fine. I won't kill her. What was it you wanted to tell me that you couldn't say in front of Madison?"
"Oh, right." Taking a drag from his smoke, Shinji considered how to say it, before deciding to just be blunt. "Taylor's a cape."
"What?"
"They made her trigger in the locker."
"Holy fuck," Crystal breathed. "I knew it was bad, but… Jesus. So, what's she do?"
"Fuck if I know," Shinji lied. There was a not insignificant chance that Taylor's power was different. However, on the off chance it wasn't, he didn't want to get caught having to explain how he knew that. He could maybe brush off knowing she was a cape as a quirk of his power, but not knowing what her power was. "Thing is, she hates Madison, Barnes, and Hess. I kind of want to avoid pissing her off and having it look like one of the few people to take her side in this is just screwing with her—"
"So screw her," Crystal giggled.
"'Just have sex with her' is not the answer to every problem."
"Actually, it might be. Think about it. If it is some kind of Master, mind control power, then it stands to reason that you should be able to keep her from causing problems. We get close to her, find out what her power is, help her out, you sex her up, then tell her you've got her old bullies by the short and curlies and hand her their leashes."
Shinji shook his head. "She's not the kind of person who would do anything with that."
"Or so you think. Maybe she just needs a little encouragement," Crystal shrugged.
"Also, what's this 'we' shit?" Shinji asked, sending her a skeptical look.
The blonde grinned. "I thought that was obvious. You're gonna introduce us. Maybe she'll open up to me."
Shinji wanted to deny it, but thinking back on what he knew of Taylor from canon and what he'd learned about her since actually meeting her… the girl was starved for human companionship. She had also been beaten into a paranoid, suspicious, distrusting mess. Crystal was one of the good ones though. He didn't think she was Taylor's personal favorite hero, but her reputation preceded her in Brockton Bay as a heroine who was friendly, helpful, open, and generally easy to talk to. If anyone stood a chance of getting right through Taylor's armor, it'd be Crystal.
"Alright. Be here first thing in the morning."
Crystal scoffed. "You seem to think I'm going home tonight."
"We're getting up at 5," he warned, and Crystal winced.
"Right. Fine. Why are we getting up so early?"
"I work out with her in the mornings now."
Considering it, Crystal nodded and lifted off from the ground. "Alright, let me go grab my workout clothes from home. I'll just do mine in the morning. Ugh, then I have class. This is gonna suuuck."
"You're the one who—"
"Yeah, yeah," she waved him off. "Send Madison home. I'll be back in a few."
Shinji watched her fly off before stubbing his smoke out and heading back inside, tossing the butt in the trash can. Making his way back to the bedroom, he found Madison waiting on the bed, right where he'd left her. "You can head on home. We're done."
"Mm," Madison nodded. Standing up, she paused before latching onto Shinji in a hug. "Are you going to get rid of me?"
Reaching down, he petted her hair. "We're working on it."
"Okay," she nodded into his side.
"Come on. I'll take you home."
Taylor blinked as she opened the door and found Shinji with someone else. "Hello?"
"Morning." Seeing she was in her workout clothes already, Shinji jerked his thumb back towards the outside. "Come on, let's go."
Biting her lip as she eyed the pretty blonde, Taylor nodded and stepped out, closing and locking the door behind her. Studying her a bit more closely, Taylor frowned, wondering why she looked so familiar. The blonde rolled her eyes and smacked Detective Kusanagi on the arm, before holding out her hand with a smile. "Sorry. Shinji's not a morning person. I'm Crystal."
"Taylor," Taylor hesitantly accepted the hand. Glancing at the detective, she wondered if it was safe to agree with Crystal. She could confirm that Shinji was a bit… taciturn first thing in the morning, but she also didn't want to upset him. So, she chose to keep quiet on it. Instead, she asked, "Do I know you…?"
The blonde laughed, taking her hand back as they started a light jog away from the house. "Not directly, but you probably know of me. I'm Laserdream."
Taylor stumbled and nearly fell flat on her face, but Shinji caught her before she could. Blushing, she muttered a quiet, "Thanks."
Shinji simply nodded and yawned. When no one said anything about her almost face planting, and Taylor stopped wanting to crawl into a hole and disappear, she asked, "You're Laserdream?"
"Yup!" the entirely too chipper for this time of the morning blonde confirmed.
Morning people, Taylor grumbled internally. "I don't want to sound… like a jerk, but… why…?"
"Why am I here?" Crystal asked, and Taylor nodded.
"Do you know De—Shinji?" she asked, remembering at the last second to call him Shinji when he wasn't on official business.
Crystal giggled. "Do I know him? Ha! We went to school together."
"Oh!" Taylor blinked. "Really?"
"Yup! We were friends." Turning a grin on Taylor, she wagged her eyebrows and added, "Even a little more than friends~."
"Crystal," Shinji sighed.
"What? It's true."
"She doesn't need the details of our love life," the man grumbled, sounding exasperated. "Short version: we went to Arcadia together and dated for a while. I needed to get into your school after hours to do some investigation and she found me there. Her aunt is the one working your case and Crystal's helping her on it."
"Oh," Taylor hummed. "That doesn't answer why she's here though."
"She's sharp," Crystal grinned. "This big lug told me he had this little morning thing with you now. Staying trim and sexy to look good in my costume takes a lot of work, so I figured it wouldn't hurt to change my schedule and just do my stuff with you two. And since I'm read in on the case, well…" Crystal sent her another smile. "I figured you could use someone to talk to. Shinji's not the most understanding or talkative guy, believe me, I know. He means well, but sometimes, it's like talking to a brick wall."
"I'm a man. You want someone to hold your hand and tell you 'that sucks,' talk to a woman. You want someone to fix the fucking problem, talk to me," he grunted.
"See? Jerk with a heart of gold," Crystal jerked her thumb towards him.
Frowning, Taylor shook her head. "I don't really want to talk about it."
Surprisingly, Crystal nodded. More to Taylor's surprise, she didn't push. "That's okay. I get it. But if you do… I'll listen."
Taylor nodded and the trio fell silent as Shinji led them to a nearby park. Once there, he worked with Taylor through a set of simple stretches while Crystal did her own, much more painful looking set. Once they were warmed up, Shinji led Taylor over to some simple public exercise equipment and had her start going through some. Crystal joined them and Taylor watched as the heroine went through her own, more intense workout.
Looking at the beautiful blonde working up a sweat, Taylor felt frumpy and out of shape, but… part of her also took in the other parahuman as an example of what Taylor could do if she worked at it. After a while of working on her exercises while Shinji went about his and kept an eye on her, Taylor finally couldn't hold it in. "How, how long did it take you to look like that?"
"Hm?" Crystal hummed, looking up from the almost meditative focus she'd had, doing squats that made her toned legs and ass stand out in her skin tight workout clothes. "This? Honestly? Years. But that's because I grew into it. I started really working out after I triggered. I was pretty tiny at the time, ask Shinji. He's got pictures to prove it. Short and flat, and a bit pudgy around the middle," she ran a hand over her washboard abs that were the biggest focus of Taylor's envy, outside of the other girl's breasts. "Took me about six months of hard work and adjusting my diet after I triggered to get really fit. Lost the little bit of pudge I had, started putting on some muscle. After that, I just maintained and grew into what you see."
Taylor fell silent as she considered that. Six months? She said she changed her diet.
"Do you, um, have any tips?" she forced herself to ask.
"Well, what's Shinji got you doing? Exercise, obviously. What else? Diet?"
"High protein, low carbs, five meals a day instead of three," Shinji answered absently as he… did a set of situps. Upside down. Hanging from a balance bar with his feet.
Taylor watched for a moment as the man's body flexed, before tearing her eyes away. "Yeah, that."
"Sounds about right, then," Crystal nodded. "It's really just putting in consistent work and knowing when not to overwork yourself. And staying away from processed crap food, sugar, and other stuff. A little ice cream or something like pizza or a burger every now and then is fine, but not every day. Also, if you want something specific, you need to focus on that muscle group. So for a tight ass like mine," Crystal grinned, shaking her ass momentarily before dipping into another squat, "squats, stairs, and running. Don't ever skip leg day! For a nice six pack, do a few extra situps, or some resistance training."
"Okay," Taylor nodded.
Eventually, they finished. Shinji and Crystal walked Taylor home as the girl's body trembled in exhaustion. They stopped on her lawn and Shinji said, "I'll be back this afternoon. Crystal?"
"Can't. I've got a class and then patrol. I might be in late tonight," the blonde shook her head. Turning back to Taylor, she asked, "Got a pen? I'll write down my number and you can call me if you want to talk, or hang out some time. Fair warning, I might just come by and kidnap you one weekend and we can go out and do some window shopping. I'll introduce you to my cousins and brother."
Not having a polite way to refuse, Taylor went into the house to get a pen and paper. Shinji was gone when she came back outside and Crystal scrawled her number down. Looking at Taylor for a moment, she sighed and reached in, pulling the sweaty, taller girl into a tight hug. "It'll get better. I promise. Aunt Carol and Shinji are doing everything they can to help. We won't let you down."
Taylor bit her lip and nodded, wanting to return the hug, but unable to bring herself to. After a moment, Crystal pulled away. "Alright. I've gotta get home and clean up so I can get to class. I'll see you tomorrow."
She watched the blonde lift off, before flying away quickly. Hurrying inside, Taylor kept her composure until she got into the shower. Turning on the water, she slipped inside, her forehead thumping against the wall as she began to cry.
Crying because someone gave me a hug. I really am pathetic.
Shinji sat in the dark and waited. He checked the time on his watch and frowned. As always, waiting sucked. But waiting without anything to relieve the boredom was so much worse.
Finally, however, his phone buzzed. He checked the message.
Madison: We're here.
Show time.
Shinji stood, pushing the rolling desk chair away. He made sure his badge was visible, hanging around his neck on a chain today. Then, he positioned himself behind where Madison's door would open and leaned against the wall, listening. He heard the front door open and close below. Faintly, he heard voices talking as two sets of footsteps ascended the stairs. One, he recognized as Madison. The other, he hadn't met yet, but would soon.
In the end, Shinji didn't have much in the way of options for dealing with Emma. For this, he had actually consulted Madison to see how her former friend would react to anything. Madison had been willing and eager to help.
"What's she going to do if I call her in and interrogate her in school?"
"Play innocent, until you actually show evidence, then she's going to probably scream rape or something and go running for the office to call her lawyer daddy."
"Call her in for questioning to the station?"
"You'll never talk to her and her dad will just tell her to shut up ahead of time."
"Alright. What if I do her like I did you? Call her with info—"
"She'll just hand the phone to her dad."
"Ambush her after school?"
"Scream rape and run, then cry to daddy."
"I notice every answer seems to end in going to her father."
"Yeah. Because that's the kind of person she is. It was always 'my daddy is a lawyer' this, and 'oh, my rich lawyer daddy' that."
"Well," Shinji grunted, "fuck."
"I may have an idea, sir…"
In short, nothing Shinji could come up with would work. Instead, today's plan had come from Madison's twisted mind. His brunette informant's parents were out of the house for the night for some reason or another, so Madison had proposed inviting Emma over for a sleepover, just the two of them, to catch up and talk about the upcoming 'video session' for Taylor—a copy of which, Madison had gotten for Shinji earlier that day, after confirming that it was on the A/V computer he'd need to include in an official search.
The bedroom door opened and the light turned on. "…gonna be great. I can't wait to show it to her!"
Shinji watched as first an unfamiliar redhead walked in, followed by Madison. He had to admit, if he didn't know she was bugfuck crazy, Shinji might be tempted. As it was… he was still tempted, just for a different reason.
Emma was a short, curvy, sexy, ridiculously well-developed redhead and that development made her look a bit older than he knew she actually was. He would figure her for a young-looking eighteen or nineteen, not actually sixteen, almost seventeen.
Emma made her way over to the bed as Madison closed the door behind herself and cast a glance at Shinji. Shinji nodded and quietly pulled out his handcuffs. Madison hurried to Emma's side and sat down just as the redhead dropped onto the bed and turned around. She caught sight of him and her eyes went wide. Her mouth opened and she inhaled to scream, but Madison latched on with a death grip, clamping her hand down tightly over Emma's mouth as she pulled the redhead into a choke hold, just as Shinji had showed her.
The handcuffs gleamed silver in the light of the room as Shinji twirled them once around his finger, before approaching the bed. "Emma Barnes. My name is Detective Shinji Kusanagi, BBPD, and you're under arrest for harassment, assault, battery, kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment of a minor, and one charge of potential domestic terrorism within a school.
