The air felt light and warm as I stood in the field. The breeze smelled sweet, like freshly washed clothes and flowers. I let my fingers frag against the tall grass and flowers, the strands tickling my palms.
"It's nice, isn't it?" Mason asked the breeze ruffling his curls.
"It is. I can't remember the last time I felt this calm" I mused. The field look like it went on forever, and I couldn't see anyone either. But I felt at peace here.
I closed my eyes and tilted my head towards the sky.
"Do you remember when we broke into Alberta's office in our freshman year?"
I snorted a laugh. "And stole the bottle of watered down vodka?"
"That was such a disappointment," he laughed and I sigh quietly.
"I wish I felt peace like this all the time. Sometimes it feels like too much," I whispered, running my fingers through my hair.
"Rose?"
I opened my eyes and turned; the sound of Mason's voice so strange. I froze in place as the dream around me changed, the sky darkening and the temperature dropping. It was standing there in front of me, it's red eyes boring into me.
I stepped backwards as it stepped towards me, its hands stretched out for me.
"It's over, Rose. I finally got you," I heard another voice say and my eyes flicked behind the figure. Robert stood a few feet away, looking as crazed as he was in Las Vegas.
"Goodbye, Rose. I hope you enjoy insanity," Robert said as the figure advanced on me. I scrambled back as its hands gripped my shoulders, yanking me off my feet.
"No!"
"Rose, stop fighting me."
I thrashed around in the arms, but the hands gripped me hard and shook me hard.
"Open your eyes!"
I blinked and I was no longer standing in the field, but near the cliffs by the house. Gabriels eyes were bright against the night sky, but I could see the fear.
"Gabe?" I whispered. I could feel my heart hammering in my chest, like the way a hummingbird's wings would flutter. Gabriel set me down on my feet and I felt the cold gravel under my toes. I looked behind me and shook my head. I wasn't just near the cliffs; I was on the edge of it.
I looked back and saw Dimitri standing a foot behind us, holding a piece of clothing while watching me closely. I looked back at Gabe before looking over him at Dimitri.
"Why are you naked?"
"He barely got his pants off before he phased," Dimitri said handing Gabriel his pants. He pulled them on quickly and shook his head.
"You've never slept walked like that before," Gabriel said. I ran my hands through my hair and shook my head. I felt so out of sorts. Dimitri came closer and wrapped his arms around me, and I rested my head against him.
"Robert made the dream seem so innocent," I whispered, the gravity of the situation hitting me.
"You almost stepped off the edge," Gabriel deadpanned and I gripped Dimitri's forearm tightly.
"He was going to make me kill myself without even realizing it."
Dimitri's grip tightened on me and shuddered a breath. While I didn't let go of Dimitri's arm, I reached my other hand out to Gabriel. He took it and squeezed it tightly, holding it like a lifeline.
"I'm not safe when I sleep," I whispered and Gabriel nodded.
"We need to find a way to block him from getting to you. It's getting out of hand," Dimitri said.
"There's another alternative," Gabriel bit out. I frowned, noticing how angry his voice sounded.
"Gabe."
"What's that?" Dimitri asked.
"We ask Em to find him, I call in a favour to a local pack," he said angrily. I pulled out of Dimitri's embrace, staring at Gabriel, barely able to comprehend what he was saying.
"You're talking about killing him."
"Of course I am!" Gabriel exclaimed, "He has threatened you, over and over again. And this time, he almost killed you. He's not going to stop. We are being ambushed on all sides, at least we can control one side!"
I was taken aback by the fury in his voice. I had seen him angry, but I had never seen this side of him. He was practically trembling. I stepped closer to him, but he backed up and shook his head, his hands held up. I stopped where I was and I saw his eyes flick over my shoulder before he turned away, walking back into the tree line.
I scoffed and started to follow after him, but Dimitri stopped me, his hand resting on my shoulder.
"Give him a few minutes," Dimitri said sympathetically, and I nodded, wrapping my arms around myself to starve off the cold wind. Dimitri noticed and pulled off his sweater, offering it to me. I slipped it on and winced as the gravel dug into my foot. Dimitri gestured for me to wait and he crouched down in front of me. I smirked to myself and gripped his shoulders before hoisting myself up onto his back. He gripped my knees as he adjusted me on his back and started walking back towards the house.
"How did you guys figure out I was gone?"
"I think one of the ghost friendlies," Dimitri said, "Things in the house went crazy. Things falling off the shelves, the scrabble box came off the shelf and spelled out 'Rose' and 'Danger'. Gabriel caught your scent and took off. I followed after on foot and when I caught up, he was shaking you awake."
I frowned to myself and rested my cheek on his back. Dimitri was good at hiding him emotions, but I could still hear how freaked out he was. I kissed his shoulder blade and rested my cheek back against him. I closed my eyes and sighed to myself, my body feeling drained of all energy.
It took longer to get back to the house, but I assumed that was because I was exhausted. I blinked awake when Dimitri climbed the steps. He set me down on my feet and I hissed quietly. I waddled into the kitchen and sat on one of the stools, pulling one of my feet us so I could examine it.
"That doesn't look good," Martin said, making me jump in the chair. I glanced at the clock over the stove and frowned.
"Did we wake you?"
"I'm glad you did," he said and crouched down to look at my foot. He sighed and said he would be right back and left the room. I looked at Dimitri and frowned.
"Go back to sleep," I whispered. He looked at me for a few moments before his own exhaustion won. He leaned down and kissee my forehead. I smiled at him tiredly as he headed for the stairs, nodding at Martin as he came back with the first aid kit.
I watered down a rag and sat on the chair across from me, lifting my feet up and setting them on his lap.
"Can I ask you something?"
Martin glanced up at me and smiled. "You can always ask me a question, kiddo."
"How come you don't see things as often? I mean, I guess I'm kind of jealous."
Martin shrugged. "I found out I had atrial fibrillation when Sheila was pregnant with Michael. The medication I take helps with my blood pressure, but for some reason, the medication dulls my sight. I get images, but not as strong or frequent as I used to. Sometimes I miss it, but sometimes, it was hard to deal with. Sort of like not being able to tell the difference between life and death, I had a hard time telling the difference between now and what hadn't happened," he explained as he pulled some gravel pieces from my foot.
"I guess we all have things we dislike about our gifts," I murmured, "Did you see Gabriel when he came back in?"
Martin nodded. "He's in rough shape, but he'll be okay."
I nodded and let Martin work. He worked in silence, cleaning all of the dirt, gravel, pieces or bark and grass out of my feet. They were torn up and I knew that they were going to hurt like crazy in the morning. I helped Michael clean up the garbage before quietly hobbling up the stairs. I stoppe din the bathroom first, grimacing at the scratches on my cheeks from branches that I had walked into. I washed my face quickly before heading to my room.
I stood in the doorway and pursed my lips. Dimitri was passed out in bed, and in the chair under the window was Gabriel. He looked cramped despite the chair being comfortable. He was also out cold.
"I tried to warn them faster, but it took a lot of energy," Lissa said from behind me. I looked at her and gave her a reassuring look.
"You did the best you could. Thank you, Liss," I whispered.
She nodded and had a tight smile of her own. "Are you okay?"
"I'll be fine. Can you do me a favour?"
"Anything."
"Can you just hang out while I sleep. I'm kind of scared to go back to sleep," I said while shifting my weight.
She sat down on the floor in front of my bookshelf, smiling at Nacho as he ran past her.
"You got it," she promised, "I can sort of tell when you are having a spirit dream. I may be able to trick you out of it. My spirit magic seems to work a little still."
"Thanks," I whispered and hoped that she could understand just how much it meant to me. I picked up the throw blanket off the end of the bed and dropped it over Gabriel, stilling when he shifted in the chair. He was tense, even in his sleep. I brushed his hair back from his face and kissed his forehead softly before getting into bed.
I curled up beside Dimitri and was able to see both Gabriel and Lissa from here. Nacho was sitting in front of where Gabriel was, his tail flicking before he launched himself into his lap. Gabriel flinched, but didn't wake up. After a moment, Nacho just curled up in his lap and tucked his nose under his tail.
I looked at Lissa again and she smiled softly at me.
"Go to sleep," she whispered. I closed my eyes and was asleep almost instantly. Maybe there was a little bit of compulsion there.
When I woke up, I wasn't sure if I was the only one awake. But I knew that Dimitri wasn't letting me go anyway anytime soon. I ran my hand over his forearm softly, letting my fingertips swirl against the coarse hair.
Buckley was at the end of the bed as usual, and Nacho was still curled in Gabriel's lap. But when I looked at him, I realized he was awake too.
"Hi," I whispered.
"Hi, Petal," he whispered, stroking Nacho's head. Nacho's purr was the only sound ini the room, that loud but gentle rumble.
"You okay?"
Gabriel nodded slowly and bit his lip.
"I'm sorry about last night. I just…"
"I get it," I reassured him, "If I were you, I'd be pretty freaked out too."
He sighed and rubbed his hands over his face. I could see the stress in his eyes.
"I just…I hate feeling like I'm overstepping."
"In what way?"
"With Dimitri. I hate feeling like I'm stepping up first when really, it should be him. But this feeling inside me won't let me. And I hate that."
"He understands," I tried to sympathize but he just shook his head.
"I don't want to be the thing that came between you if something did. Like last night, I knew that he was panicked, and when you went to him first…It hurt, and it's stupid because it was irrational. When you grabbed my hand, I felt fine, but I hate that I felt so possessive."
"You were being protective."
"No, it was possessive. And I need to be okay with you going to another person. Because I know you love him, and I know he would worship the ground you walk on if you let him. Regardless of anything, just know that I am happy that you have him. It brings me some of the greatest joy to see you smile, especially if he is the one making you smile like that," he explained, and his eyes moved to Dimitri.
"He's a good man."
I nodded and sighed when I felt Dimitri's arm loosen. He rolled onto his other side, practically dragging all of the blankets with him. I smirked and got out, stretching my arms as I yawned.
"I need coffee. I'm exhausted," I groaned as I headed to the door. I hear Nacho's feet hit the floor and the soft sounds of Gabriel following after me. I headed down the stairs and followed the smell of brewing coffee.
I smiled at Martin as I beelined for the coffee pot, a mug already sitting on the counter. I filled my mug and leaned against the counter, smelling the brew with my eyes closed.
"What happened to your arm?" Emily asked in alarm. I opened my eyes and looked at my forearms before looking at her confused.
"What do you mean?"
Emily came over and gripped my elbow gently, lifting my arm up so I could see my bicep. I bit my lip and glanced at Gabriel.
"Oh, it's nothing," I said nonchalantly, but I knew how it looked. The darkening bruise on my bicep that looks very much like a handprint. The guilt on his face was almost unbearable to look at.
"I was sleepwalking last night and Gabriel caught up to me before I seriously hurt myself. It was either this or taking a steep tumble," I explained away, but I knew that it still bothered Gabriel. Emily accepted it for what it was and left the topic alone. I glanced at Gabriel and gave him a reassuring look.
"It's okay," I whispered. He didn't look convinced but poured himself a cup of coffee.
"Is Dimitri still asleep?" Emily asked.
I nodded. "Yeah, the three of us had a rough night," I explained and tucked my hair behind my ear.
"I'm sorry," Emily said sympathetically. I nodded and furrowed my brows at Michael, going around the island.
"Stuck on a question?" I asked him. I wasn't great at English, but sometimes he needed the question read to him so that he comprehended it in English. Too many times he had read something and interpreted it in another language. Michael nodded and I read the question to him, glancing up to see Gabriel and Emily standing in the doorway speaking quietly.
I visited Marina again at the store, telling her about what happened. She seemed to be freaked out, muttering under her breath in Spanish as she went into the back of her store. When she came back she warned me that I needed to be weary. I already knew that, but the shake in her voice was what concerned me.
"He is very powerful," she muttered as she twisted the herbs together, "But there is another? Another that is strong. But she's weak at the same time."
"Lissa," I whispered with a nod of my head, "She was murdered a month ago. But when she was alive; she was very powerful."
Marina nodded and handed me the bundle once she finished putting the herbs together.
"Burn this before you go to sleep. If you can leave it burning in a bowl while you sleep, you should. Your friend, she watches over you?"
I nodded and took the bundle from her.
"Good. You need strength."
I nodded and reached for my wallet but she shook her head.
"No. No price for that," she said quietly. I smiled tiredly at her and left the store, sighing as I got back into the car. When I pulled into the driveway, there was a car I didn't recognize. I glanced at it as I walked up the driveway, cocking my brow when I saw a few boxes inside the door.
"Sheila?"
"In here, sweetheart!" I heard her call out. I walked into the kitchen, setting my bag on the counter when I saw the people in the kitchen.
"What are you guys doing here?" I asked.
Croft, Eddie, and Dimitri all sat at the island, each of them looking troubled. Dimitri was supposed to be back at Court this week. Croft glanced at the others and cleared his throat.
"There's been a change," he said quietly. He didn't need to elaborate, but I knew it wasn't good.
It's a short one but enjoy!
