{"Because I'm a mother and I'm angry, so don't test me! River Song."}
"Hey, who turned out the lights? Hey, who turned out the lights?" River uses the squareness gun on the wall. Theta looked towards me, silently asking if Fay was ok. "She's safe." I told him quickly, "This way, quickly. Move!" River demanded as we rushed through the halls.
"Hey, who turned out the lights?"
Watching him was something I always seemed to do, no matter the time or place I was always watching. He was my world, I let out a small laugh as I watched The Master trip him causing him to face plant the very very rare snow that we got. Our planet was mostly sunny or rainy, never having wether cold enough for it to snow but once every few years we would get one beautiful winter.
I always wondered why Theta would become so happy as he talked about Earth costumes in the winter time but now I know. Turning away from the window, I made my way quickly down to meet up with him. Venturing outside, I shivered lightly with a laugh as I looked up at the sky, my eyes closing as the flakes melted against my cheek. Suddenly, I felt arms wrapped around my waist, "Do you like it?" He asked gently causing me to nod back. The Master was standing off to the side glaring at us. "I don't think your bestfriend approves." I mused gently as he swayed me, he let out a laugh.
"Too bad."
Theta had been gone for a hundred years now, I was used to it. It wasn't like I had much time to do anything about him, I had been training. When I regenerated into a man, the council decided that this would be the best opportunity for them. My original self had long white hair, I was reborn rude and stiff. After being without the love of my life for so long, I decided I need to change. While the council was still on my ass, I decided to cut my hair, using my magic I managed to dye it a darker color.
I was sitting against the window seal, reading one of my favorite books. I had just managed to escape the new escapade that was coming for me. My training was more important than me, not that I minded sometimes. Suddenly I paused, sensing someone come into the library. My eyes slowly moved away from my book as the footfalls came closer. "My love?" I stiffened slightly at the name, it was Theta. Finally he appeared, I raised an eyebrow at his new face as he gapped in shock at the sight of me. "You've changed." My voice seemed to startle him as he blushed brightly.
"As have you." He breathed out with a gulp causing me to chuckle as I closed the book and stood up. I made my way towards him with a smirk, "Want to find out what else has changed?" I murmured gently leaning down to speak against his ear. He whimpered slightly and gulped lowly before nodding quickly.
The large moon is hanging high in the orange sky. River cuts a square in the wall with her gun and enters. "OK, we've got a clear spot. In, in, in! Right in the centre. In the middle of the light, quickly. Don't let your shadows cross. Doctor." She spun to face him as everyone stood in the middle except him. "I'm doing it." He snapped, "There's no lights here. Sunset's coming. We can't stay long. Have you found a live one?" I asked gently moving over to him, "Maybe. It's getting harder to tell." I nodded back with a small smile, "What's wrong with you?" He asked his sonic that wasn't wanting to work right now. "We're going to need a chicken leg. Who's got a chicken leg? Thanks, Dave." She throws the meat into the shadow, and once again it is just bone before it hits the ground. "Okay. Okay, we've got a hot one. Watch your feet." She demanded to everyone, "They won't attack until there's enough of them. But they've got our scent now. They're coming."
"Oh, yeah, who is he? You haven't even told us. You just expect us to trust him?" Other Dave snarled loud enough for Theta and I to hear. "He's the Doctor." River stated looking back at him with heart eyes, "And who is the Doctor?" Lux asked looking between the three of us. "The only story you'll ever tell, if you survive him." She did have a point on that one. "You say he's your friend, but he doesn't even know who you are." I blew out a breath with a scoff, she sure as hell didn't think of his as a friend. "Listen, all you need to know is this. I'd trust that man to the end of the universe. And actually, we've been." I hummed lowly in thought, end of the universe. Sounds fun. "He doesn't act like he trusts you and she definitely doesn't. He seems to listen and trust her, so I doubt if she doesn't trust you then he will." Anita pointed out with a raised eyebrow, "Yeah, there's a tiny problem. They haven't met me yet." She goes over to where the Doctor is still scanning shadows. I just continued to watch them silently, my mind on Fay. I had sent her safely to the Tardis with the other girl so I knew she was safe but I still didn't like her being away from me. "What's wrong with it?"
"There's a signal coming from somewhere, interfering with it."
"Then use the red settings."
"It doesn't have a red setting."
"Well, use the dampers."
"It doesn't have dampers."
"It will do one day." Theta takes River's sonic screwdriver, "So, some time in the future, Fay just gives you my screwdriver." He asked her, not believing her in the slightest. "Yeah." She nods back, "Why would she do that?" I asked her, looking her up and down with a frown. "I didn't pluck it from his cold dead hands, if that's what you're worried about." She snapped causing me to turn with a glare, "And we know that because?" I snarled causing her to step up. "I don't have to answer any of your questions, Kate. I can never understand why you don't know how to mind your own damn business." She snarled causing my eyes to flash, "Because I'm a mother and I'm angry so don't test me! River Song." The shelves began to shake causing Theta to grab me and pull me into his chest. "Easy baby. Easy." He soothed gently causing me to calm down, "Listen to me. You've lost your friend. You're angry. I understand. But you need to be less emotional, Doctor, right now." He turned to her with a heated glare, his grip tightening on me. "Less emotional? I'm not emotional."
"There are six people in this room still alive. Focus on that. Dear God, you're hard work young." She snipped with an eye roll, "Young? Who are you?" He snapped angrily at her, "Oh, for heaven's sake! Look at the pair of you. We're all going to die right here, and you're just squabbling like an old married couple." I flinched slightly at the man's wording, Theta sighed. "Doctor, one day I'm going to be someone that you trust completely, but I can't wait for you to find that out. So I'm going to prove it to you. And I'm sorry. I'm really very sorry." River whispers in his ear, and he looks stunned. I frown as he paled looking towards me, my eyes widening as tears sprung in them. No. She didn't. She couldn't. "Are we good? Doctor, are we good?" She watched us, I quickly had to look away. While he didn't say for sure if my thought were right, I couldn't help but feel my heart break. "Yeah, we're good." I muttered out almost robotically as I tighten my fists. "Good." River takes back her screwdriver and leaves us. He turns to me before bringing me into a deep kiss, his forehead leaning against mine after he pulls back. "I'll tell you later. Ok. Just keep yourself safe." I stared at him before nodding back, if it wasn't his name that she whispered then what was it? "Know what's interesting about my screwdriver? Very hard to interfere with. Practically nothing's strong enough. Well, some hairdryers, but I'm working on that. So there is a very strong signal coming from somewhere, and it wasn't there before. So what's new? What's changed? Come on! What's new? What's different?"
"I don't know. Nothing. It's getting dark?" Other Dave spoke with a frown looking between us, "It's a screwdriver. It works in the dark. Moon rise. Tell me about the moon. What's there?" Theta asked looking at everyone, "It's not real. It was built as part of the Library. It's just a Doctor Moon." I frowned looking at the man, "What's a Doctor Moon?" I asked cocking my head, "A virus checker. It supports and maintains the main computer at the core of the planet." I nodded with a hum, "Well, still active. It's signalling. Look. Someone somewhere in this library is alive and communicating with the moon. Or, possibly alive and drying their hair. No, the signal is definitely coming from the moon. I'm blocking it, but it's trying to break through." An image of Donna appears, "Doctor!" River shouts in shock at seeing her on the screen. "Donna!" Theta and I shout together, Donna disappears again. "That was her. That was Donna! Can you get her back? What was that?" River was going a hundred miles a minute out of her mouth, "Hold on, hold on, hold on. I'm trying to find the wavelength. Argh, I'm being blocked."
"Professor?"
"Just a moment."
"It's important. I have two shadows."
"Okay. Helmets on, everyone. Anita, I'll get yours."
"It didn't do Proper Dave any good."
"Just keep it together, okay?" River stated to Anita, my eyes following her. I would have to time it right. "Keeping it together. I'm only crying. I'm about to die. It's not an overreaction." River puts the helmet on Anita. "Hang on."Theta sonics the visor black, "Oh God, they've got inside." River gasped not noticing what he did, "No, no, no. I just tinted her visor. Maybe they'll think they're already in there, leave her alone." River scoffed slightly, "Do you think they can be fooled like that?" She asked with suspicion. "Maybe. I don't know. It's a swarm. It's not like we chat." Theta shrugged with an eye roll of annoyance. "Can you still see in there?" Other Dave asked with a cock of his head. "Just about." Anita spoke up from the other side of her suit. "Just, just, just stay back. Professor, a quick word, please." Theta pulls her off to the side as he grabs me as well pushing me in front of him towards the other exit. "What?" She asked with a frown as she watched him, "Down here." They crouch down and I finally see it over them, my eyes widening again. "What is it?" She asked in annoyance, "Look, you said there are six people still alive in this room." Theta stated, "Yeah, so?" She asked, I cleared my throat speaking up. "So, why are there seven?" Skeletal zombie Dave has caught up to us, "Hey, who turned out the lights?"
"Run!"
"Hey, who turned out the lights?"
"Thank you, Princess. If it wasn't for you." I held my hand up with a smile, "Hey, we are bestfriends. It's what we do." She laughed and nodded back, she then paused looking sadly at me. Zero had stood next her, both watching me. "What?" I asked looking between them with a frown, my only guard Aspen chuckled lowly from beside me. "My lady." She bowed at me with a smirk, before the other two brought me into a hug. "What are y'all doing? What's with the hugging?" I asked as they pulled away, looking at one another with knowing looks. This time though I had no idea what they were thinking. "Before we leave, we just want to make sure you'll be ok." I cocked my head to the side looking between them in confusion. "I'll be fine. You two need to plan your wedding, after dealing with all the trouble." I gestured to the unconscious men around us, "It's the least you could do. Don't worry about me, I'll make sure to talk to the council about everything."
Apex sighed looking towards Zero with an exhausted look, "Jeez, princess. We are trying to be gentle, but since you don't seem to understand. Will you be ok, on your own? You know with Doc gone, you haven't been doing much but wallowing in your own self pity."
"I don't wallow."
Aspen snorted from beside me causing me to shoot her a look. Apex moved closer, grabbing my hands, "Look, I know he comes and goes. Maybe that's how you two work but I also know that you need to work on your own path, you told us something was coming. Something big. That's why we wanted to get married before, because we know things will change. So maybe you need to change a little as well. Find yourself. You've been trained most of your life, and the other has revolved around the man who disappears. Try worrying about yourself everyone once in while. I mean you literally stopped in the middle of your meal to come find us and help us." She gave me a pointed look, I sighed with a nod.
"You're right. Things are changing. So will I."
I hadn't been within the dome when the first words of the attack came. I had taken my friends advice, escaping within a week. I was in the farmlands, when the bombs began. It was a two day walk from the dome and I knew a lot of people had died before I even stepped foot in that direction. Within three days, the world was mostly on fire. I had been in battle on the second day, the Daleks coming to end us all for good. The screams of the children still haunt me, the shouts of soldiers demanding people get away. I couldn't find Apex, Aspen, or Zero in the end. Deep down I knew, they probably didn't even survive the first night but I still tried. I still fought. For my home. For my people. For my family.
I felt Theta land on Gallifrey but I never saw him in battle. There was a moment in Time, where I felt him, I spoke to him but I couldn't remember any of it.
The world I knew was gone.
Seven days.
That was how long it took Gallifrey to fall.
Seven days of watching my people get massacred.
Finally, I was called in the council room and forced to abandon my home. I had left my people, although before I could, a Dalek had shot me. I thought I would die with my people, I smiled and welcomed my death. I was wrong. When I woke up in the room where I would be for another fifty years, I wished for death.
All I had ever wanted was to die and I couldn't even be granted that much.
The group run through a high level walkway to another library skyscraper. "Kate, go ahead. Find a safe spot." Theta pushes me forward causing me to scoff as everyone comes to a stop as well. "It's a carnivorous swarm in a suit. You can't reason with it." I snapped at him in annoyance, "Five minutes." He promised, staring me down causing me to sigh and nod. River's eyes widened as she looked at me in shock but I ignored her and pulled Theta into a deep kiss. "You come back to me. Or I will kill you." He laughed, running his hand across my face as he gently pushed my hair behind my ear. "I love you. I wouldn't leave you and Fay, never in a million years." I nodded bumping my head again at his gently, closing my eyes. "I love you too." I breathed out pulling away. "Other Dave, stay with him. Pull him out when he's too stupid to live. Two minutes, Doctor." Zombie Dave barges through the doors and we run off. My heart pounding as I look back one more time at the love of my life. Be careful.
I stared at him as he hummed lowly, he had just come back after two months. My eyes wondering over his newest self, I had regenerated three years ago but he had just recently done so as well. He had come back to show me his new self, wanting me to be the first to see him. At the moment, we were at the beach, one that we had discovered on the other side of the planet. The part we lived on was mostly barren and a desert land. It was nice to have a new view of our planet, Sarah Jane had actually been the first one to see him but he said it didn't count.
I smiled as I watched them run along the sand, this newer version had the weirdest run. Sarah let out a scream when he knock her over in to the water, I burst into laughter myself causing the women to glare. She turned to Theta, saying something to him causing his eyes to shine as he moved over to me. "Don't even think about it." I held my hand out with a pointed looked causing him to pout. "I wasn't even going to do anything." I scoffed with an eyebrow raised, "So Sarah didn't just tell you come get me and dump me in the water." He paused, his face letting me know he got caught.
"Right." He uttered out before quickly picking me up, I let out a shout in slight panic and shock. "Theta." I hissed quietly as he moved towards the water and Sarah who was smirking smugly. "Please. Don't." I pleaded gently causing him to pause, "Persuade me." He murmurs gently as he stared into my eyes, I watched him with a small blush before bringing him into a deep kiss.
Sarah shouted at him in annoyance, "No. Doctor. Don't let her persuade you!" It was to late though, he had already fell to his knees as we continued to make out in the sand. I moaned gently as his hands started to roam my body, only to gasp in shock when water was poured on us. Theta and I pulled away to see Sarah smirking smugly. "Oops."
Night has fallen. River and her remaining team are on the other side of another round room. I was standing by the door, waiting for Theta to come back. She is checking the shadows with her screwdriver. "You know, it's funny, I keep wishing the Doctor was here." I frowned at her statement, "The Doctor is here, isn't he? He is coming back, right?" Anita asked with a cock of her head, "You know when you see a photograph of someone you know, but it's from years before you knew them. and it's like they're not quite finished. They're not done yet. Well, yes, the Doctor's here. He came when I called, just like he always does. But not my Doctor." I scoffed with a glare, she was just like everyone else, like Rose. He was the same man, just as I was the same women.
There is no difference between our regenerations other than the personality change. We were the same people, it's like saying your father wasn't your father because you hadn't seen him in a year. That's not how it worked, and I'm so sick of people trying to say that Theta had to be a certain way to be their Doctor. "Now my Doctor, I've seen whole armies turn and run away. And he'd just swagger off back to his Tardis and open the doors with a snap of his fingers. The Doctor in the Tardis with Fay and Kate. Next stop, everywhere." I jumped slightly when I felt Theta's hand on my shoulder, he placed a kiss on my neck before speaking up. "Spoilers. Nobody can open a Tardis by snapping their fingers. It doesn't work like that." Actually it did, just like the doors were supposed to open outwards. He just didn't want to ruin the fun, not that I was going to change his mind about it. He was just fine the way he was! "It does for the Doctor." River muttered in annoyance, my eyes flashing as a book flew past her head. "He is the Doctor." I snarled angrily, "Yeah. Some day." She glared at me as I rolled my eyes and crossed my arms.
I noticed he was alone this time. "How are you doing?" He asked everyone, "Where's Other Dave?" River asked looking behind him. "Not coming. Sorry." Everyone looked down sadly at the news, another one down. "Well, if they've taken him, why haven't they gotten me yet?" Anita asked with a frown, "I don't know. Maybe tinting your visor's making a difference." Anita has two shadows. "It's making a difference all right. No one's ever going to see my face again." She laughed dryly, "Can I get you anything?" He asked her gently smiling at her. "An old age would be nice. Anything you can do?" He looked toward me and I nodded with a wink. "I'm all over it." I uttered back with a smile. "Doctor. When we first met you, you didn't trust Professor Song. And then she whispered a word in your ear, and you did. My life so far. I could do with a word like that. What did she say? Give a dead girl a break. Your secrets are safe with me." An just before those things could take her, I teleported her. Her suit stayed though so Theta and I knew she was almost taken. I got her just in time, "Safe." Theta uttered out slowly, "What?" She asked but it wasn't her, it was the shadows that have evolved. It took her voice, just a bit and used its forms to control the suit. "Safe. You don't say saved. Nobody says saved. You say safe. The data fragment! What did it say?" He turned to Lux, "Four thousand and twenty two people saved. No survivors."
"Doctor?"
"Nobody says saved. Nutters say saved. You say safe. You see, it didn't mean safe. It meant, it literally meant, saved!"
Aspen, my guard watched from the sidelines as I trained a few troops. Apex was also here, wanting to train under me after I finished with these men. My attention was pulled to two of them laughing at Apex who was glaring harshly at them. Letting out a sigh, I made my way over and cleared my throat. They spun with wide eyes, "Commander." They spoke together as I turned to Apex who was watching. "Are you ready? I'll teach you to fight better than any man here." She nodded and we moved towards the center of the battle hall. "Alright. Let's get to work. Gentlemen, let us show how females can do it." I gave a pointed look towards the two men who couldn't keep their mouths shut.
Apex definitely kicked their asses the next day.
Theta has got into a Library Archive File, he looked back at me causing me to come closer. I nodded with wide eyes, before pointing at the section on the screen. "See, there it is, right there. A hundred years ago, massive power surge. All the teleports going at once. Soon as the Vashta Nerada hit their hatching cycle, they attack. Someone hits the alarm. The computer tries to teleport everyone out." I ranted in my own realization, "It tried to teleport four thousand twenty two people?"river asked with a frown, "It succeeded. Pulled them all out, but then what? Nowhere to send them. Nowhere safe in the whole library. Vashta Nerada growing in every shadow. Four thousand and twenty two people all beamed up and nowhere to go. They're stuck in the system, waiting to be sent, like emails. So what's a computer to do? What does a computer always do?" River's eyes widened, "It saved them." Theta draws on a large polished table. "The library. A whole world of books, and right at the core, the biggest hard drive in history. The index to everything ever written, backup copies of every single book. The computer saved four thousand and twenty two people the only way a computer can. It saved them to the hard drive." An alarm sounds, "What is it? What's wrong?"
"Autodestruct enabled in twenty minutes."
"What's maximum erasure?" River asked with a frown, "In twenty minutes, this planet's going to crack like an egg." I stated as a fact, "No. No, it's all right. The Doctor Moon will stop it. It's programmed to protect Cal." The terminal screen goes blank. "No, no, no, no, no, no, no!"
"All library systems are permanently offline. Sorry for any inconvenience. Shortly..."
"We need to stop this. We've got to save Cal." Lux demanded in anger, "What is it? What is Cal?" Theta asked him, "We need to get to the main computer. I'll show you." I sighed with a grunt, why can't we just get out of here? Why can't anything be easy? I just want to hold my baby girl. "It's at the core of the planet." I muttered, "Well, then. Let's go." River points her screwdriver at the library logo in the middle of the compass rose in the floor. It opens. "Gravity platform."The four of us step on and go down, although it's technically five with the suit.
"Autodestruct in fifteen minutes."
Theta and I look up to see a globe with swirling energy in it. "The data core. Over four thousand living minds trapped inside it." He spoke looking towards me with a small smile, "Yeah, well, they won't be living much longer. We're running out of time." I scoffed, "What is it with you and picking the ones with a horrible out look on life." I muttered causing him to pout. He soon finds an access terminal, I frown as he we hear a voice. "Help me. Please, help me." It was a little girl, "Was that a child?" River asked in horror, it was the little girl from before. "The computer's in sleep mode. I can't wake it up. I'm trying." He taps at the keyboard, and toys come to life in the girl's home. "D, these readings." I muttered looking over his shoulder with a frown. "I know. You'd think it was dreaming." He muttered back, "It is dreaming, of a normal life, and a lovely Dad, and of every book ever written." I slowly turned to glare at the man. "Computers don't dream." I snarled lowly, the suit continues to stand behind us. "Help me. Please help me." She cries again, "No, but little girls do." Lux pulls a breaker and a door opens, we run in.
A node turns to face them, "Please help me. Please help me." It was her, as I thought. "Oh, my God." River gapped in shock, "It's the little girl. The girl we saw in the computer." She stated turning to Theta. "She's not in the computer. In a way, she is the computer. The main command node. This is Cal." Lux explained causing me to glare at the man in disgust. "Cal is a child? A child hooked up to a mainframe? Why didn't you tell us this? We needed to know this!" I snarled moving to get in his face, "Because she's family! Cal. Charlotte Abigail Lux. My grandfather's youngest daughter. She was dying, so he built her a library and put her living mind inside, with a moon to watch over her, and all of human history to pass the time. Any era to live in, any book to read. She loved books more than anything, and he gave her them all. He asked only that she be left in peace. A secret, not a freak show." I scoffed, before sighing sadly. "So you weren't protecting a patent, you were protecting her." Theta stated with a nod, "This is only half a life, of course. But it's for ever." Lux muttered lowly, "And then the shadows came." Theta and I muttered together, "The shadows. I have to. I have to save. Have to save." The girl kept repeating, "And she saved them. She saved everyone in the library. Folded them into her dreams and kept them safe."
"Then why didn't she tell us?" River asked with a frown, "Because she's forgotten. She's got over four thousand living minds chatting away inside her head. It must be like being, well, us." Theta shrugged looking at me, I nod back in agreement. "So what do we do?"
"Autodestruct in ten minutes."
"Easy! We beam all the people out of the data core. The computer will reset and stop the countdown. Difficult. Charlotte doesn't have enough memory space left to make the transfer. Easy! I'll hook myself up to the computer. She can borrow my memory space." I glared at him and smack him, "Difficult. It'll kill you stone dead." I snarled back in annoyance, "Yeah, it's easy to criticise." I raised an eyebrow causing him to flinch and clear his throat. "It'll burn out both your hearts and don't think you'll regenerate." River snapped, "I'll try my hardest not to die. Honestly, it's my main thing." He did have that habit but I wasn't about to let him die. "Doctor!" River shouted in annoyance, "I'm right, this works. Shut up. Now listen. You and Luxy boy, back up to the main library. Prime any data cells you can find for maximum download, and before you say anything else, Professor, can I just mention in passing as you're here, shut up."
"Oh! I hate you sometimes."
"I know!"
"Mister Lux, with me. Anita, if he dies, I'll kill him!" River and Lux leave, leaving us alone with the suit of death. "What about the Vashta Nerada?" It asked, "These are their forests. I'm going to seal Charlotte inside her little world, take everybody else away. The shadows can swarm to their hearts' content." He wasn't though, I know he isn't going to die today. "So you think they're just going to let us go?" I don't understand why it was still trying to pretend with us. We knew it wasn't her, she was safe back in the Tardis. "Best offer they're going to get." He shrugged looking towards me, I nodded back. "You're going to make 'em an offer?" It asked, cocking its head. "They'd better take it, because right now, I'm finding it very hard to make any kind of offer at all. You know what? I really liked Anita. She was brave, even when she was crying. And she never gave in, Kate removed her but your still pretending to be her. But I'm going to let that pass, just as long as you let them pass."
"How long have you known?" It asked, "I sensed it, and he counted the shadows. You should have been kind." It turned to me, "These are our forests. We aren't kind." I rolled my eyes. "I'm giving you back your forests, but you are giving me them. You are letting them go." I demanded with a glare, "These are our forests. They are our meat." Shadows stretch out from Vashta Nerada suit towards us. "Don't play games with me. You just killed someone I liked. That is not a safe place to stand. I'm the Doctor, this is my Binded Kate, the Queen of Gallifrey and you're in the biggest library in the universe. Look us up." There is a pause, then the shadows withdraw. "You have one day." The spacesuit collapses, "Oh, Anita."
"She's fine."
"I told you to go!"
"Lux can manage without me, but you can't." River punches the Doctor, knocking him out. She turns to me, freezing when she sees my eyes glowing. "Touch me and you'll die before you get in that chair." She slowly nods before I move to sit next to Theta. Who was I to help her? She clearly wanted to do this so I wasn't about to stop her. A little later, River is twisting some wires together. "Autodestruct in two minutes." Theta wakes up with a jerk, his eyes frantically looking for Fay and I. He stopped letting out a breath before his eyes moved towards River. Oh, Come on, what are you doing? That's my job." He hissed at her, "Oh, and I'm not allowed to have a career, I suppose?" She smirked at him, "Why am I handcuffed?" I snorted lightly as he shoots me a look immediately recognizing them. Yes, I had been the one to hand cuff him as River got everything set up.
"Spoilers." I really hated that word, "This is not a joke. Stop this now. This is going to kill you! I'd have a chance, you don't have any." I shook my head with a glare at him, "You wouldn't have a chance, and neither does she. She's timing it for the end of the countdown. There'll be a blip in the command flow. That way it should improve her chances of a clean download. This is her established event." I explained to him, he stared me down with wide eyes before he nodded. If I said this was an established event then he knew to believe me, I didn't lie about events like this. "Funny thing is, this means you've always known how I was going to die. All the time we've been together, you knew I was coming here. The last time I saw you, the real you, the future you, It wasn't really you. You had dropped Fay off to meet with me, she wanted to give me the screwdriver but Kate wouldn't allow much more. It's sad now, I think all this time I've been trying to be someone I'm not. I'm sorry, Doctor. For everything."
"Autodestruct in one minute."
The two screwdrivers and her diary are just out of reach. "There's nothing you can do. If you die here, it'll mean I've never met you." She breathed out with a teary smile, I almost wanted to feel bad for her but the gut feeling that I had was to hard to ignore. I didn't like her, I didn't want to either. Whoever she was in our future, she was going to destroy something. I just didn't know what yet, "Time can be rewritten." I turned to Theta with wide eyes, did he really want to end his life for her? He looked back at me with a small smile, "To protect them, I would rewrite any time." I nearly cried at his words as he still looked at me with so much love. "Not those times. Not one line. Don't you dare. It's okay. It's okay. It's not over for you. You'll see me again. You've got all of that to come. You and me, time and space. You watch us run."
"River, you know Fay's name." My eyes widened as I turned to her with a frown, she wince slightly with a irritated look. "Autodestruct in ten..." She shook her head, "Not by choice. Things happened. It wasn't supposed to be her." I glared at the women, "Nine, eight, seven..." Speaking up with a frown, "There's only one reason we would ever tell anyone our name. There's only one time we could." I started but she shook her head again, "Like I said. It wasn't supposed to be her. Don't worry it wasn't like that." Theta growled against the handcuffs, "What did you do to my daughter?" He had to hold himself back, the women was about to die for us after all. "Hush, now. Spoilers." She breaths out a small smile, "Two, one..." River joins two power cables together, and there is a blinding light.
I moved to stand, my eyes stayed on the chair before I made my way to Theta who is still handcuffed to the copper pipe.
People are teleporting out, "Please be patient. Only three can teleport at a time. Do not state your intended destination until you arrive in your designated slot." I gave Donna a hug as we met up with her, although she had disappeared shortly after looking for someone. A few minutes later, she came back over. "Any luck?" Theta asked her with a raised eyebrow, "There wasn't even anyone called Lee in the library that day. I suppose he could have had a different name out here, but, let's be honest, he wasn't real, was he?" I looked up at him as Donna watched him with a sad look. "Maybe not." Theta uttered out with a frown, "I made up the perfect man. Gorgeous, adores me, and hardly able to speak a word. What's that say about me?" Theta didn't even pause, "Everything." I smacked him, causing him to wince especially at the look Donna shot him. "Sorry, did I say everything? I meant to say nothing. I was aiming for nothing. I accidentally said everything." She nodded back with a fake smile, causing me to smirk and shake my head with a laugh. We watched a women help people onto the teleports, "What about you? Are you all right?" Donna asked looking between us, "We're always all right."
"Is all right special Time Lord code for really not all right at all?"
"Why?"
"Because I'm all right, too."
"Come on."
We all walk out silently, somehow all of us lost something today. It may be different for each of us but it was the same feeling between us.
Theta puts River's diary on the balcony rail. "Your friend, Professor Song. She knew you in the future, she knew us. What happens to me and Kate? Because when she heard my name, the way she looked at me. Even the way she looked at Kate, she wouldn't even make eye contact with Fay." Theta paused as he stared at us, his own brain racking itself for answers. "Donna, this is her diary. Our future. I could look it up. What do you think? Shall we peek at the end?" He raised an eyebrow at her, "Spoilers, right?" She asked with a cock of her head looking at us. "Right." He puts River's sonic screwdriver on the diary. "Come on. The next chapter's this way."
We walk back up the stairs, only for him to pause and turn to me with a frown. I raise an eyebrow and smirk, "Well?" I asked giving him a pointed look.
"When you run with the Doctor, it feels like it will never end. But however hard you try, you can't run for ever. Everybody knows that everybody dies, and nobody knows it like the Doctor. But I do think that all the skies of all the worlds might just turn dark, if he ever, for one moment, accepts it."
Theta runs back for the screwdriver. "Why? Why would Fay give her my screwdriver? Why would Our daughter do that? Thing is, future us had years to think about it, all those years to think of a way to save her, and what Fay did was give her a screwdriver. Why would She do that?" I watched as he racked his brain for the answer that we didn't know. We didn't understand why Fay would do what she would. He looks down at the screwdriver with a frown, because it also contains a neural relay, which has two green lights on it. "Oh! Oh! Oh, look at that. Our daughter is very good! Gets it from her brilliant mother!" He cheered loudly as he picked me up and spun me with a smile. "Our daughter is gonna be grand!" I let out a laugh, he was happy that our daughter would grow up smart not that she figured out how to save River.
"What has she done?"
"Saved her."
The Doctor is running as one green light goes out. "My daughter gave you this chance, so I'll help her see it through. Sorry, River, shortcut!" He clicks a button, "Platform disabled."The Doctor dives into the gravity well.
The last light is blinking.
"Everybody knows that everybody dies. But not every day."
The Doctor plugs the screwdriver into the core, and her neural energy is transferred.
"Not today."
River is wearing a loose white robe. Charlotte and Doctor Moon walk up to her. "It's okay, you're safe. You'll always be safe here. The Doctor fixed the data core. This is a good place now. But I was worried you might be lonely, so I brought you some friends. Aren't I a clever girl?" Charlotte smirked slightly smug, "Aren't we all?" The two Daves are walking towards her with smiles on their faces as she pulled them into hugs. "Oh, for heaven's sake. He just can't do it, can he? That man. That impossible man. He just can't give in." River gushed, but she knew deep down it wasn't him. It never was him, she couldn't ever even begin to compete with his two girls. The two girls she had hurt so bad, maybe that was why he hated her so much. "Some days are special. Some days are so, so blessed. Some days, nobody dies at all."
The Doctor returns to the Reception and stares at the Tardis. He snaps his fingers, and the door opens. Donna, Fay and Kate are waiting inside with Anita and Evangelista.
"Now and then, every once in a very long while, every day in a million days, when the wind stands fair, and the Doctor comes to call..."
He snaps his fingers again and the door closes.
Donna had gone to rest after dropping off Anita and Evangelista, both women continued to thank me the whole time. Theta was quite, I knew he was upset but I couldn't figure out why. After River died, he opened his feelings about her to me. He didn't like her, didn't trust her but he wanted to know how she knew Fay. How she knew us, and honestly I was in the same boat but at the same time I couldn't help but feel something else.
When she spoke, I felt like my ears were burning. All I could feel for her was pure hatred and I didn't even know her. What kind of person does that make me? Who am I to hate someone I didn't know? An Fay, she would point at her, but barely look at her. It was like every time she did, she was more unhappy than before. Theta had saved River because that's who he was, and if his daughter gave her a screwdriver to save the women then who was he to question it.
Although I was more than willing to question it. I couldn't just let it slide, this women knew us in the future. She knew Fay, but she didn't like her. She knew me, but she hated my guts just as much as I hated hers. And she knew Theta, but she was in love with him which isn't surprising. He has that effect on everyone it seems.
The mystery of River Song was not solved and honestly I was scared to find it out.
I was scared that if we found out who she was, I was going to lose myself.
Although maybe I'm already lost.
