{"Sorry, I'm taken. Thanks for the compliment though."}
Wheatfield with crows is now hanging on a gallery wall with an expert enthusing over it to his audience. "So this is one of the last paintings Van Gogh ever painted. Those final months of his life were probably the most astonishing artistic outpouring in history. It was like Shakespeare knocking off Othello, Macbeth and King Lear over the summer hols. And especially astonishing because Van Gogh did it with no hope of praise or reward. He is now..." Amy turns to us with a smile, we all stand in a beautiful modern museum filled with art and culture. We stand in the Van Gogh section, Fay weaving between people as she looks at the painting all around us. "Thanks for bringing me." Amy smiled at us, "You're welcome." I spoke gently with a small smile, "You're being so nice to me. Why are you being so nice to me?" She glared suspiciously, "I'm always nice to you." Theta uttered out with a cock of his head. "Not Kate. Not like this. These places you're taking me. Arcadia, the Trojan Gardens, now this. I think it's suspicious."
"What? It's not. There's nothing to be suspicious about." I rolled my eyes at the man I loved, he could be so dense sometimes. "Okay, I was joking. Why aren't you?" She watched us with a frown, our attention being pulled to the man talking about Van Gogh. "Each of these pictures now is worth tens of millions of pounds, yet in his lifetime he was a commercial disaster. Sold only one painting, and that to the sister of a friend. We have here possibly the greatest artist of all time, but when he died you could sold his entire body of work and got about enough money to buy a sofa and a couple of chairs. If you follow me now..." We moved with the group, two boys stared at another painting where Fay was standing. "Who is it?" I watched them, more or less keeping an eye on my little girl. "It's the doctor."
Theta turns in confusion at the name, The schoolboys are looking at the portrait of Doctor Gachet. I snorted at his realization, "He was the doctor who took care of Van Gogh when he started to go mad." Fay spoke up, both boys jumping in shock; apparently not realizing she was there. "I knew that." One of them grumbled as they moved on, Fay immediately coming back over to me. I smiled down at her as I grabbed her hand. "Look. There it is. The actual one." Amy holds the picture in her Van Gogh exhibition guide book next to the painting of the Church at Auvers. "Yes. You can almost feel his hand painting it right in front of you, carving the colours into shapes. Wait a minute." Theta frowns as he moves in, I raise an eyebrow as I too zoom in on what he was seeing. "What?" Amy asked, "Well, just look at that." I muttered lowly in awe, that wasn't supposed to be there. "What?" Fay asked this time, looking up at us. I picked her up and placed her on my hip as I moved in to let her see.
"Something very not good indeed." Fay spoke as she spotted it, "What thing very not good?" Amy frowned in annoyance at the three of us. "Look there, in the window of the church." A dragon-like image, "Is it a face?" She asked with a cock of her head. "Yes. And not a nice face at all. I know evil when I see it and I see it in that window." Theta goes over to Doctor Black, who is at the Still Life with Twelve Sunflowers. "It has changed hands for something in the region of twenty..." The three of us watch him tap the man on the shoulder, "Excuse me. If I can just interrupt for one second. Sorry, everyone. Routine inspection, Ministry of Art and Artiness. So, er..." He paused with a raised eyebrow as he waited for the man's name. "Doctor Black." The man spoke back with a frown, "Yes, that's right. Do you know when that picture of the church was painted?"
"Ah, well, ah, well, what an interesting question. Most people imagine..." Theta cleared his throat interrupting the man. "I'm going to have to hurry you. When was it?" I rolled my eyes as I moved towards them, "Exactly?" Black asked with a frown, "As exactly as you can." I spoke with a smile, trying to be nice but Theta wasn't having any of it. "Without a long speech, if poss. I'm in a hurry." I smacked his arm, he just responded in kind to stick his tongue out at me. "Well, in that case, probably somewhere between the first and third of June." Black muttered out with a shrug, "What year?" I asked gently as I handed Fay over to Theta, instantly shutting him up. "1890. Less than a year before, before he killed himself." He uttered out with a small frown, "Thank you, sir. Very helpful indeed." I mused lightly as I moved back towards the Tardis, Theta pausing to stare at the man. "Nice bow-tie. Bow-ties are cool." He laughs, Amy rolls her eyes as I chuckle with a shake of my head.
"Yours is very..." He paused, "Yes, suites him well, thank you. Keep telling them stuff. We need to go." I spoke grabbing Theta and pulling him after me. Amy follows after with a confused look, "What about the other pictures?" She asked as we entered our home, "Art can wait. This is life and death. We need to talk to Vincent Van Gogh."
:••:••:••:••:
Its nighttime when the Tardis materializes in a narrow alley, scaring a cat. We all soon step out, Theta holding the door open for Fay and I before closing and locking it. He turns to us with a clap of his hands. "Right, so, here's the plan. We find Vincent and he leads us straight to the church and our nasty friend." He grabs my hand as I grab Fays, and we move on through the alleys of the 1800s. The brick walls are illuminated by little light but that's what makes it beautiful. "Easy peasy." Amy speaks, breaking me out of my thoughts. "Well, no. I suspect nothing will be easy with Mister Van Gogh. Now, he'll probably be in the local cafe. Sort of orangey light, chairs and tables outside." Amy looks in her exhibition guide book. Theta is pronouncing Gogh completely incorrectly, by the way, It should sound more like Hock. "Like this?" Amy asked as she flipped to the correct page. "That's the one." I speak up with a nod, Fay clears her throat. "Or indeed like that." She points in front of us, where the beautiful dimly lit cafe stood. "Yeah, exactly like that."
We move towards the cafe, a man stands serving others outside. "Good evening. Does the name Vincent Van Gogh ring a bell?" Theta asks, the man scoffs turning to face us with a glare. "Don't mention that man to me." He then stalks back inside, Theta frowns before spotting a waitress. He moves over to her, "Excuse me. Do you know Vincent Van Gogh?" She too scoffs at the name, "Unfortunately." She grumbled out in annoyance. "Unfortunately?" Amy asked with a confused look as she cocked her head. "He's drunk, he's mad and he never pays his bills." She snipped as she place her hands on her hips. "Good painter, though, eh?" General hilarity ensues at the very idea. "Come on! Come on! One painting for one drink. That's not a bad deal." The man from leads his impecunious customer outside, the same man we were looking for. "It wouldn't be a bad deal if the painting were any good. I can't hang that up on my walls. It'd scare the customers half to death. It's bad enough having you in here in person, let alone looming over the customers day and night in a stupid hat. You pay money or you get out."
"I'll pay, if you like." Theta speaks up, looking fine as fuck as he sits at the table with a confident smirk on his face. "What?" The manager asked with a frown, "Well, if you like, I'll pay for the drink. Or I'll pay for the painting and you can use the money to pay for the drink." Vincent slowly turns to face us, Amy is standing behind them; leaning against the window as she watches. I am sitting on the table opposite of Theta, my feet in the chair as I too watched. Fay however was standing beside her father with an excited look on her face. "Exactly who are you?" He asked looking between us with a frown. "Oh, I'm new in town." Theta uttered out, "Well, in that case, you don't know three things. One, I pay for my own drinks, thank you." Everyone but us bursts into laughter. "Two, no one ever buys any of my paintings or they would be laughed out of town. So if you want to stay in town, I suggest you keep your cash to yourself. And three, your friend's cute, but you should keep your big nose out of other people's business. Come on, just one more drink. I'll pay tomorrow."
"No." The manger glares, "Or, on the other hand, slightly more compassionately, yes?" Vincent smiles at the man. "Or, on the other hand, to protect my business from madmen, no." He snaps back, "Or?" Amy and I shoot each other a look. "Oh look, just shut up, the pair of you." I snap causing them to turn towards me with wide eyes, "I would like a bottle of wine, please, which I will then share with whomever I choose." Amy speaks up as she moves to stand between them. "That could be good." Vincent muttered with a smirk as he looked between us. "That's good by me." The manger also mutters, "Good." He gives Vincent his Self-portrait with Straw Hat back and goes inside with Amy.
Later, at a table inside. We all sat together, Fay sitting beside Vincent; Amy on his other side as Theta and I sat across from him. "That accent of yours. You from Holland like me?" He asked, looking at Theta in confirmation. "Yes." Theta smiles, while Amy and I shook our heads. She sounded Scottish because she was, while I held a sokovian accent. Theta said he loved the at about my new self, practically purred with delight every time I spoke. "No." Amy speaks up, "She means yes. So, start again. Hello, I'm the Doctor." He went to introduce us, only to be interrupted by Vincent who glared. "I knew it!" He hissed, pointing a finger at Theta. "Sorry?" Theta asked looking at him in confusion. "My brother's always sending doctors, but you won't be able to help."
"Oh, no, not that kind of doctor. Anyway, this is Kate and Fay." He paused, getting sidetracked by another painting that sat next to them. "That's incredible, don't you think, Amy?" He smiled happily as she laughs in agreement. "Absolutely. One of my favourites." She mutters back with a slight bounce. "One of my favourite whats? You've never seen my work before." He looked between us with suspicion, "Ah yes. One of my favourite paintings that I've ever seen, generally." Amy corrected herself as she cleared her throat with an awkward look. "Then you can't have seen many paintings, then. I know it's terrible. It's the best I can do. Your hair's orange." He looks towards Amy who smiles back with a glint in her eyes. "Yes. So's yours." She muttered back, "Yes. It was more orange, but now is, of course, less. And you, I do think it suits you very well." He flirts turning towards me with a smirk, Theta immediately flinches. His body making a weird jerky move as he sits up with a horrified look.
"Sorry, I'm taken. Thanks for the compliment though." I mused lightly as Theta nodded in point as he made sure to wrap his arms around me. "An this little one is yours as well, I suppose?" He asked, smiling towards Fay who smiles back with a happy nod. Theta cleared his throat with a groan, "So. Er, Vincent, painted any churches recently? Any churchy plans? Are churches, chapels, religiousy stuff like that, something you'd like to get into? You know, fairly soon?" Theta asks, crossing his fingers. "Well, there is one church I'm thinking of painting when the weather is right." Vincent shrugs, not thinking much about the question. "That is very good news." An older woman runs in, screaming. "She's been murdered! Help me!" She cried out, "That, on the other hand, isn't quite such good news. Come on, everyone."
We follow after the screaming woman, "She's been ripped to shreds!" A man shouts as we pass him, "Please, let me look. I'm a doctor." Theta pushes past everyone, "Who is it?" I immediately cover Fays eyes at the horrifying sight. "Oh no, no, no." Theta's voice mutters out lowly, "Is she dead?" Someone asks, "Away, all of you vultures. This is my daughter. Giselle. What monster could have done this? Get away from her!" She pushes Theta, "Okay, okay." Theta backs away, bumping into to me. "Get that madman out of here!" The crowd start throwing stones at Vincent, we also get pelted. I let out a angry shout as I push them back with my powers. Silence rang out as everyone stared at me in fear and horror. Then chaos again, shouts and screams surround us as Theta grabs mine and Fays hands pulling us away. "You bring this on us. Your madness! You! Monster! She's a monster!" I flinched slightly at the words, "He's to blame!" More shouts follow us as we take off away from everyone.
We stopped in a dark alley, far from the anger of the people. "Are you all right?" Theta asked as he spun to face me, wiping my face. I frowned as I looked down at his hands, I had been crying? Fay was watching me with a sad look, Amy looked pissed but I just gave him a small nod. His eyes darkened at my nod, knowing that I wasn't ok. He then turned to check on everyone else, "Yes, I'm used to it. What was that, back there?" He asked me, I sighed looking away. "She was born special. Has anything like this murder happened here before?" Theta spoke up, changing the subject to which Vincent respected. "Only a week ago. It's a terrible time." Vincent muttered in response, "As I thought. As I thought. Come on, we'd better get you home." Theta picks Fay up, the little girl laying her head on her fathers shoulder. He then reaches for my hand with a small smile, I give him a tiny one in return as I allow him to hold my hand. "Where are you staying tonight?" Vincent asked, raising an eyebrow; Theta takes it the wrong way though. "Oh, you're very kind." He moves to pull me along, I watch Vincent look confused as Amy laughs awkwardly before she follows after us.
"Dark night. Very starry."
"It's not much. I live on my own. But you should be okay for one night. One night."
"We're going to stay with him?"
"Until he paints that church."
"Watch out. That one's wet."
"What?"
We enter a small home, a vision of the Bedroom in Arles painting that he was well known for was hanging to dry. Vincent lights a lantern, "Sorry about all the clutter." He utters out lowly, his voice dry. "Some clutter." Theta muttered with a small smile of excitement as we all look around. "I've come to accept the only person who's going to love my paintings is me." He speaks, Fay just laughs with a shake of her head. "I love them!" She speaks as she spun to face him, he gave her a half smile; definitely not believing her. "Wow. I mean, really. Wow." Amy laughed as well as she spun around looking at the wondrous beauty around us. "Yeah, I know it's a mess. I'll have a proper clear out. I must, I really must." Theta and Amy browse the pictures around the room as if they were in a gallery. Vincent smiles at me as he gestures for me to sit, I do so on his bed. "Coffee, anyone?" He asked, I shook my head. "Not for me, actually." Theta spoke up as Vincent puts the coffee pot down on a still life.
"You know, you should be careful with these. They're precious." We all move towards the kitchenette in the back. "Precious to me. Not precious to anyone else." Vincent speaks up with a scoff, "They're precious to me!" Amy practically shouts as she follows after Fay and I. "Well, you're very kind. And kindness is most welcome." He grabs two logs for the fireplace, "Right, so, this church, then. Near here, is it?" I smack Theta on the arm, he pouts in response. "What is it with you and the church?" Vincent asked with a slight snip in his voice. "Oh, just casually interested in it, you know." Theta shrugged, "Far from casual. It seems to me you never talk about anything else. He's a strange one." He spoke turning towards me with a smirk, I gave a small laugh as I nodded. "Okay, so, let's talk about you, then. What are you interested in?" Theta shot me a look, immediately I stick my tongue out in response again. "Well, look around. Art. It seems to me there's so much more to the world than the average eye is allowed to see. I believe, if you look hard, there are more wonders in this universe than you could ever have dreamed of."
"You don't have to tell me."
Five minutes later, Theta and I were sitting and watching Vincent as he talked. "It's colour. Colour that holds the key. I can hear the colours. Listen to them. Every time I step outside, I feel nature is shouting at me. Come on. Come and get me. Come on. Come on! Capture my mystery!" He gripped Theta's jacket as he got in his face, we both raised our eyebrows at the man. "Maybe you've had enough coffee now. How about some nice calming tea? Let's get you a cup of chamomile or something, shall we? Amy. Where's Amy?" A scream outside, it's Amy and then another scream rang out, Fay. That's when we noticed Fay was gone as well, "No, no, no!" We rush outside to find her on the ground. "Fay? Amy? What happened?" We immediately rushed to Fay as Vincent stood beside Amy. "I don't know. I didn't see it. I was having a look at the paintings out here when something hit me from behind."
"It's okay. He's gone now and we're here." My head snapped up at the sound of a low growl, "Momma. It wasn't a human. Look, can you see it too?" I could faintly hear Vincent start to mutter. "No! No!" It was huge, "Take it easy. Take it easy!" Vincent is backing away from something only he, Fay and I could see. "What's happening? What's he doing?" Amy asks looking between us, "I don't know." Vincent picks up a pitchfork, "Oh, dear." Theta murmured lowly as I stood up with the others, I immediately pushed Fay behind me. "Run. Run!" He shouts back at us, "Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's not a bad idea. Amy, get back. He's having some kind of fit. I'll try to calm him down."Vincent is stabbing at the air, I shake my head. "He's not having a fit." I stated as I stared at the beast. Theta watched me with a frown before he nodded, instantly believing me. "Look out!"
A barrel is knocked over then a large scaly tail sends Theta flying. "I can't see anything. What is it?" Amy asks as I shake my head, it was definitely different. Something I've never seen before in my life, but as I watched it; I couldn't help but feel saddened at the sight. It seemed alone. Scared. "That is a good question. Let me help you." Theta grabs a pole, "You can see him, too?" Vincent asks, looking towards Theta in awe. "Yes. Ish. Well, no. Not really. Kate and Fay seem to be able too." And gets sent flying again, and something growls. "You couldn't see him?" Vincent questions in annoyance, "No. No. Oi!" I roll my eyes as Theta continues to swing wildly while Vincent plunges his pitchfork into the invisible enemy. Wounded, it leaves. Theta continued to fight the beast, even though it wasn't there anymore. "He's gone." Vincent and I spoke together, he froze in embarrassment as he let out an awkward laugh. "Oh, right. Yes. Of course."
:••:••:••:••:
"Right. So he's invisible. What did he look like?" He runs his hands through his hair as he spun to face us, "I'll show you." Vincent paints over a bunch of violets. "Oh, no, no. No, no!" Theta shouts as Amy slaps her hand over her mouth with a gasp. I sigh, "What?" He asks with a frown, "It's just er, that was quite a good. Oh, no. On you go."Vincent produces a charcoal sketch of a thing with a wicked beak, crest and claws. "Okay. Okay. Right. Fay, Amy, make Mister Van Gogh comfortable. Don't let any invisible monsters in through the front door." He takes the painting and grabs my hand. "But it could be outside, waiting." Amy speaks up as she moves towards us with a worried look. "Well, don't worry. I'll risk it. What's the worst that can happen?" He laughs excitedly as Fay rolls her eyes at her father, "You could get torn into pieces by a monster you can't see." She states, giving him a pointed look. "Oh right, yes, that. Don't worry, I've got Kate. I'll be back before you can say where's he got to now?" He moves to leave, "Not that fast!" He shouts as he scares everyone, I roll my eyes as I shake my head. "But pretty fast. See you around." He grabs my hand and pulls me along with him.
:••:••:••:••:
I watch as Theta starts hunting through chests; the moment we enter the Tardis. "Right. You in here somewhere? I can't apologise enough. I thought you were just a useless gadget. I thought you were just an embarrassing present from a dull godmother with two heads and bad breath. Twice. How wrong can a man be?" He finds a gizmo with a rear view mirror fastened to the top and plugs it into the console. It powers up and he stands in front of it and sticks his tongue out. The mirror lights up with Match Found Print Ready. It prints of a picture of his first regeneration, then his second. "Good. Okay, you're working. Now, see what you make of this. Who is that?" He holds up the sketch of the monster. Ding. Match found print ready. A macaw. "No, I know it's not that. There are thousands of them and you can see them plain as day." Polar bear, "No. Definitely not. This is the problem with the impressionists. Not accurate enough. This would never happen with Gainsborough or one of those proper painters. Sorry, Vincent. You will just have to draw something better." I chuckled with a shake of my head as he rushes out the door.
He leaves the Tardis wearing the gizmo on his chest, with the rear view mirror looking over his right shoulder. An image of the beast appears in it, and I clear my throat. "My love." I mutter lowly as I stared at it, "That's better, old girl. Time delay, but you always get it right in the end. Good. Let's find out who this is, then. Well, well, there you are." The mirror says Krafayis. Planet of origin uncertain. Nomadic pack animals. Strict dominance hierarchy. Huge territories, several solar systems wide. Preferred habitat: Planets with oxygen and nitrogen based atmospheres. "Oh, you poor thing. You brutal, murderous, abandoned thing." I murmured lowly as I slowly moved to place my hand on it. "I hope we meet again soon so I can take you home." Theta speaks up as he turns to face me, his eyes holding confusion as I pet the creature. He looks in the mirror again and realizes that I've been petting it this whole time. "Maybe not that soon." He screams out causing it to scream as well. "No! You idiot." I shout in horror as it pulls back and almost takes our heads off.
"Run!"
"No shit!"
We run, it chases us, only visible in the mirror and through my eyes. Theta tries scattering benches and other objects to slow it down. "Take that, and that." I let out a shout as I almost trip over one of the things he was scattering. "No helping!" I shout as he pulls me behind a wall. We both pant as we wait, Eventually it leaves. Theta slowly looks round the corner and screams, I jump at another scream and my powers shift. The crates beside us explode, as Amy and Fay appear out of nowhere. "Never do that! You scared the living daylights out of me. Poor Kate, are you okay?" Theta cooed as he turns towards me, I nodded back with a small breath as I open my arms to pull Fay into me. She immediately clings onto me as I pick her up, "Sorry, I got bored. As much as you admire his command of colour and shape, it is hard to get fond of Vincent Van Gogh's snoring." Amy snips as we move to leave; making our way back to the snoring man.
:••:••:••:••:
"Wake, wakey, rise and shine! Breakfast is served in the courtyard. Whoa! What a morning. Come on. And Amy's got a little surprise for you." We lead him outside, where he gasps at the sight. "I thought I'd brighten things up to thank you for saving me last night." She is sitting among, lots of sunflowers in lots of pots. "Ah." He breaths out in shock, I smiled towards Theta who grabbed my hand. Fay was standing on the opposite side of me, "I thought you might like, you know, possibly to perhaps paint them or something? Might be a thought." She shrugged bashfully, "Yes, well, they're not my favourite flower." She frowned, looking shocked at his words. Apparently she thought that he liked them because he painted them, but just because he paints them doesn't me he likes it. It's art. "You don't like sunflowers?" She asked gently, he shrugged. "No, it's not that I don't like them. I find them complex. Always somewhere between living and dying. Half-human as they turn to the sun. A little disgusting. But, you know, they are a challenge."
"And one I'm pretty sure you'll rise to. But, moving on, there's something I need to show you." Theta leads everyone back inside, handing Vincent the printout from the gizmo. "That's him. And the eyes, without mercy." It's strange that he says it like that, because all I could see was fear. "This is a creature called the Krafayis. They travel in space. They travel as a pack, scavenging across the universe. And sometimes one of them gets left behind. And because they are a brutal race, the others never come back. So, dotted all around the universe are individual, utterly merciless, utterly abandoned Krafayis. And what they do is, well, kill, until they're killed. Which they usually aren't. Because other creatures can't see them." I explained to him, Theta paces around the room as I sit on the table. Fay coming to stand between my legs, "But I can." I cleared my throat with a raised eyebrow. "You three can, yes. And that's why we are in a unique position today, my friend, to end this reign of terror. So, feeling like painting the church today?"
"What about the monster?"
"Take my word for it. If you paint it, he will come."
"Okay. I'll get my things."
"In your own time. And I promise you, we'll be out of your hair by this time tomorrow."
Vincent paused, looking towards us sadly before he goes into the other room. "This is risky." Theta muttered lowly, "Riskier than normal?" Amy asked with a raised eyebrow. "Well, think about it. This is the middle of Vincent Van Gogh's greatest year of painting. If we're not careful, the net result of our pleasant little trip will be the brutal murder of the greatest artist who ever lived. Half the pictures on the wall of the Musee D'Orsay will disappear. And it will be our fault." I explained to her, she nodded slowly as reality began to set in.
:••:••:••:••:
Amy, Fay and I stand in the courtyard waiting for Theta to bring Vincent. Poor man, he was saddened by the thought of us leaving him. I could tell by the look on his face at Theta's words earlier. Theta comes outside with a sad look, Amy immediately rushes over to him. "What's happening?" She asked, "We're leaving. Everyone knows he's a delicate man. Just months from now he'll, he'll take his own life." Theta spoke gently as he moves past her towards Fay and I. "Don't say that. Please." He gives her one last look before he pulls us inside the main house. We wait for a few more minutes, Theta looks at the picture Prisoners Exercising. "Come on. We have to do this on our own. Go to the church at the right time and hope the monster still turns up." We hear footsteps coming in, it was Vincent dressed up. He actually looked quite good, Theta makes a small noise as he looks towards me offended. "I'm sorry, did I say that out loud?" Everyone laughs at me except Theta who pouts and crossed his arms. I smile at him as I give him a gentle kiss, "Don't worry, I only see you." I breathed out as I grabbed his hand, he smiles brightly back at me as he leans down to give me a deeper kiss. "Alright, you two. I'm ready. Let's go."
We immediately get moving, Theta and I swinging Fay as we walk with Amy and Vincent in front of us. "I'm sorry you're so sad." She utters out as she helps carry his things. "But I'm not. Sometimes these moods torture me for weeks, for months. But I'm good now. If Amy Pond can soldier on, then so can Vincent Van Gogh." She laughs awkwardly as she shakes her head. "I'm not soldiering on. I'm fine." She frowns, "Oh, Amy. I hear the song of your sadness. You've lost someone, I think. You all have. Someone important." Theta and I flinch, Fay stops swinging as she looks down sadly. "I'm not sad." Amy tells him, ignoring us. "They why are you crying?" She flinched as she lifts her hand up to wipe away the tear that was falling down her cheek. "It's all right. I understand." He smiles sadly at her, "I'm not sure I do." She speaks robotically, Theta moves towards them. "Okay. Okay. So, now, we must have a plan. When the creature returns..."
"Then we shall fight him again."
"Well, yes, tick. But last night we were lucky. Amy could have been killed. So this time, for a start, we have to make sure I can see him too."
"And how are we meant to do that, suddenly?"
"The answer's in this box. I had an excellent, if smelly, godmother."
We meet a funeral procession coming the other way. "Oh no, it's that poor girl from the village." Vincent ducks his head so he isn't seen, as we stand aside respectfully as the coffin is carried past, with a bouquet of sunflowers on it. "You do have a plan, don't you?" Amy asks us with a cock of her head. "No. It's a thing. It's like a plan, but with more greatness."
:••:••:••:••:
Five minutes later, we arrive at the beautiful church. It definitely wasn't given justice in Vincent's painting, not that he did do a good job. It just looked better in person, but I suppose a lot of things look better in person. We start setting up his things so he can start painting one of his famous pieces. "And you'll be sure to tell me if you see any, you know, monsters." Theta speaks as he moves to bend down next to the sitting man. "Yes. While I may be mad, I'm not stupid." I smirked, "No. Quite. And, to be honest, I'm not sure about mad either. It seems to me depression is a very complex..." Vincent points his finger at Theta making him pause."Shush. I'm working." The three of us laughed lightly at his words and the look on Theta's face. "Well, yes. Paint. Do painting! I remember watching Michelangelo painting the Sistine Chapel. Wow! What a whinger. I kept saying to him, look, if you're scared of heights, you shouldn't have taken the job then."
"Shush."
"And Picasso. What a ghastly old goat. I kept telling him, concentrate, Pablo. It's one eye, either side of the face."
"Quiet."
Later, an owl hoots. The picture is almost finished, "Is this how time normally passes? Really slowly. In the right order. If there's one thing I can't stand, it's an unpunctual alien attack." I rolled my eyes with a groan at him, he's been talking for two hours now. It's almost dark, just a bit of light left. Theta moves over to me as I watch him with a raised eyebrow, Amy following after him. "Are you okay? You seem a bit, if I didn't know you better, I'd say nervous." He grumbled for a moment, "Yes, there's something not right and I can't quite put my finger on it." I frowned as I watched Fay and Vincent perk up, then I saw it. "There. He's at the window." Vincent pointed right at it, "Where?" Theta asked looking towards me. I raised my hand and pointed at the window. "There, on the right." Theta nods as he claps his hands together. "As I thought. Come on. I'm going in."
"Well I'm coming too." We spun to face him, "No! You're Vincent Van Gogh. No." Theta gave Amy and Fay a pointed look. Our daughter nodded but Amy didn't, and I knew she would follow. "But you're not armed." Vincent grunted out in confusion, "I am." Theta shot me a wink, I chuckled with a shake of my head. "What with?" Vincent scoffed back, "Overconfidence, this, and a small screwdriver. I'm absolutely sorted and if I'm not then I've got Kate. You've seen what my wonderful woman can do, don't worry. Just have to find the right crosactic setting and stun him with it. Sonic never fails. Anyway, Amy, only one thought, one simple instruction. Don't follow me under any circumstances." We both take off towards the church, The church porch is decorated with St Michael slaying the dragon. Theta gets out the gizmo and puts it on, then goes inside with me following close behind him. The Krafayis can be heard, but I couldn't see it yet. Theta scans with the sonic screwdriver, "Damn, he's moved."
I shouted as I flew backwards, the sound of glass shattering fills my ears as Theta yells. I let out another shout, energy bursts from my hands as I throw it backwards. Theta immediately rushes forwards to help me up, "Come on, beautiful. We gotta go." He uttered as as he dragged me towards the door. "Doctor!" Amy slams right into us, I grunt slightly in both annoyance and pain at her. "Argh! I thought I told you. Never mind. We'll talk about it later. Quick, in here." We get into a confessional, "Absolutely quiet. Can you breath a little quieter, please?" Theta snaps towards Amy who was on the other side, I sat in Theta's lap with him. "No. He's gone past." Amy mutters, "Shush." I hissed at her just as the beast smashes Amy's side of the confessional. She screams in terror, "I think he heard us." It attacks our side. "That is impressive hearing he's got. What's less impressive are our chances of survival." I wanted to smack him.
"Hey! Are you looking for me, sonny? Come on, over here. Because I'm right here waiting for you." Vincent fends off the Krafayis with a chair as Fay rushes over to help us out. "Come on. Quickly. Get behind me." We rush behind him, Theta tries his sonic screwdriver. "Doing anything?" Vincent, Fay and I shake our heads in response as we move towards the door. "Uh uh."
"Where is he?"
"Where do you think he is, you idiot? Use your head."
"Anything?"
"Nothing. In fact, he seemed to rather enjoy it."
"Ooo."
"Duck! Left." Theta gets thrown against a wall, Fay and I winced together at the sight. "Ooh." I groan out before rushing over to help him up. "Right, sorry. Your right, my left." Vincent shouts back over to us, Theta grunted. "This is no good at all. Run like crazy and regroup." He grabs Fay and follows after Amy who had gestured for us to follow her. "Oh, come on, in here." We follow her into a crypt, The Krafayis jams its foot in the door to stop us closing it, so Vincent stamps on it. The door closes, "Right. Okay. Here's the plan. Amy, Rory." Theta paused at his own slip up as I smack his arm. "Who?" Amy asked looking confused, "Sorry. Er, Vincent." Vincent looks towards us with raised eyebrows. "What is the plan?" Amy asked, "I don't know, actually. My only definite plan is that in future I'm definitely just using this screwdriver for screwing in screws." He placed his screwdriver back in his pocket.
"Give me a second. I'll be back." Vincent takes off, leaving us against the door. "I suppose we could try talking to him." Amy's head snapped towards him with a raised eyebrow. "Talking to him?" She hissed at him, "Well, yes. Might be interesting to know his side of the story. Yes, though maybe he's not really in the mood for conversation right at this precise moment." The beast hammers on the door. "Well, no harm trying. Listen. Listen! I know you can understand me, even though I know you won't understand why you can understand me. I also know that no one's talked to you for a pretty long stretch, but please, listen. I also don't belong on this planet. I also am alone. If you trust me, I'm sure we can come to some kind of, you know, understanding. And then, and then, who knows?" A window is broken in, and the beast enters. "Over here, mate!" We move to hide behind a stone monument. Vincent has fetched his easel and is brandishing it with its three pointed feet forwards.
"What's it up to now?" Theta asks as I peek out, "It's moving round the room. Feeling its way around." I speak up with a small frown, it was blind. "What?" Theta asked looking towards me, "It's like it's trapped. It's moving round the edges of the room." Vincent explains, "I can't see a thing." Amy groans out causing Theta's eyes widen in realization. "I am really stupid." He breathes out in his own stupidity. "Oh, get a grip! This is not a moment to re-evaluate your self-esteem." Amy snaps in annoyance, "No, I am really stupid, and I'm growing old. Why does it attack but never eat its victims? And why was it abandoned by its pack and left here to die? And why is it feeling its way helplessly around the walls of the room? It can't see. It's blind. Yes, and that explains why it has such perfect hearing!" Vincent groans slightly at his words. "Which unfortunately also explains why it is now turning around and heading straight for us." He hissed in anger as I peek back out. "Vincent. Vincent, what's happening? Kate?" I growl as I jump out, "It's charging now. Get back. Get back!" I hold my hands up and shield, the beast begins to beat against it as everyone stand behind me. My eyes glow as I reveal it, Theta's eyes widened in wonder at the sight.
Letting out another grunt, I use my powers to push everyone away as I jump out of the way as well. I release the shield causing it to stumble forwards. "No!" I shout in horror as The Krafayis skewers itself on a statue that we had been standing in front of. I whimper at the sight, I didn't mean for that to happen. I just needed everyone out of the way, I needed everyone to be safe.
Then it falls to the floor, mortally wounded. Fay let's out a small cry at the sight, "He wasn't without mercy at all. He was without sight. I didn't mean that to happen. I only meant to move everyone, I never meant to..." Theta pulls me into a hug as Vincent started to cry as well, "He's trying to say something." Theta and I slowly pull away from one another and move towards it, "What is it?" Vincent asked, cocking his head in confusion. "I'm having trouble making it out, but I think he's saying, I'm afraid. I'm afraid. There, there. Shush, shush. It's okay, it's okay. You'll be fine. Shush." Fay immediately pushes past her father, her eyes glowing as her hands hover over the scared creature. It whines once more as it heals, I smile as Fay gently pets it's head. "It can't stay here, I can move it though." I spoke up, everyone nods as I took a breath and closed my eyes. "Go. Be happy. Be free." I muttered gently as I used my powers to send it to a home where it could be free. "He was frightened, and he lashed out. Like humans who lash out when they're frightened. Like the villagers who scream at me. Like the children who throw stones at me." Vincent mutters as he stands up, all of us slightly saddened at the thought. "Sometimes winning, winning is no fun at all."

The five of us make our way to a field outside the church and move to lie on the ground to look up at the night sky. "Hold my hand, Doctor. Try to see what I see. We are so lucky we are still alive to see this beautiful world. Look at the sky. It's not dark and black and without character. The black is in fact deep blue. And over there, lighter blue. And blowing through the blueness and the blackness, the wind swirling through the air and then, shining, burning, bursting through, the stars. Can you see how they roar their light? Everywhere we look, the complex magic of nature blazes before our eyes." Vincent voice was calming, allowing all of us to bask in the darkness under the stars. The five of us laid out in a circle, "I've seen many things, my friend. But you're right. Nothing quite as wonderful as the things you see." Theta speaks up, as Vincent turns to look at him with a small smile. "I will miss you terribly."

We now all stood back in his home, it was day time, Fay had gone towards the painting he had ruined earlier. "I only wish I had something of real value to give you." He hands Theta the Self-portrait in a Straw Hat. I watch as Fay's eyes glow and she fixes the painting from before, turning it back to normal. Healing it. She turns to me with a innocent look as I wink at her with a small laugh. "Oh, no, no, no. I could never accept such an extraordinary gift." Vincent chuckles with a shake of his head. "Very well. You're not the first to decline the offer. Amy, the blessed, the wonderful." They cheek kissed, "Be good to yourself, and be kind to yourself." They hugged with laughs, "I'll try my best." He winks at Fay who smiles up at him. "And maybe give the beard a little trim before you next kiss someone." She rubs her cheek slightly, "I will, I will. And if you tire of this Doctor of yours, return, and we will have children by the dozen."
"Eek." Theta and I chuckled together as Vincent pulls me into a hug, "Thank you, wondrous beauty." I blushed slightly at his words as he turned to Theta. "Doctor, my friend. We have fought monsters together and we have won. On my own, I fear I may not do as well." Vincent pulls Theta into a hug, before letting us go. We make our way outside, Theta pauses with a small frown as he turns to us. "Are you thinking what I'm thinking?" Theta asked, looking towards us. Fay and I nodded in agreement as Amy smiles, "I was thinking I may need some food or something before we leave." We shook our heads in response, "Well, no, you're not thinking exactly what I'm thinking." I turned back towards his home. "Vincent!" He peeks out shirtless, "I've got something I'd like to show you. Maybe just tidy yourself up a bit first." He shoots me a smile and wink as Theta moves to cover my eyes.

The Tardis has been covered in advertising posters. "Now, you know we've had quite a few chats about the possibility there might be more to life than normal people imagine?" Theta tells Vincent as he moves to unlock it. "Yes." Vincent frowns as he looks between the four of us; we probably look creepy as we all smile at him. "Well, brace yourself, Vinny." Theta winks at him as we all enter the Tardis after his little round about to see how it works. "How come I'm the crazy one, and you four have stayed sane?" Fay grabs his hand and leads him around the beautiful console room. "What do these things all do?" He points towards all the buttons. "Oh, a huge variety of things. This one here, for instance, plays soothing music. While this one makes a huge amount of noise. And this one makes everything go absolutely tonto." The Tardis jerks into flight, "And this one?" I make sure to pull his hand away. "That's a friction contrafibulator!" Theta shouts in horror, "And this?" He points as Fay laughs. "That's ketchup. And that one's mustard." She points out giving him a happy smile. "Mmm, nice. Come on, back to the cafe and you can tell me about all the wonders of the universe."
"Good idea. Although, actually, there's a little something I'd like to show you first." We land outside of the place we were before, "Where are we?" The time flight is burning the posters off the Tardis. "Paris, 2010 AD. And this is the mighty Musee D'Orsay, home to many of the greatest paintings in history." He laughs in happiness, "Oh, that's wonderful." Two lads walk past listening to a radio. "Ignore that. I've got something more important to show you." Fay grabs his hand as we make our way inside the museum and into the Van Gogh exhibition. He looks around in silent shock. Theta moves over to the museum guide from before. "Doctor Black, we met a few days ago. I asked you about the church at Auvers." Theta smiles at the man, "Oh, yes. Glad to be of help. You were nice about my tie." He laughs in response, Amy turns Vincent towards them. "Yes. And today is another cracker if I may say so. But I just wondered, between you and me, in a hundred words, where do you think Van Gogh rates in the history of art?" Black pauses for a moment, "Well, big question, but to me, Van Gogh is the finest painter of them all. Certainly, the most popular great painter of all time. The most beloved. His command of colour, the most magnificent. He transformed the pain of his tormented life into ecstatic beauty. Pain is easy to portray, but to use your passion and pain to portray the ecstasy and joy and magnificence of our world. No one had ever done it before. Perhaps no one ever will again. To my mind, that strange, wild man who roamed the fields of Provence was not only the world's greatest artist, but also one of the greatest men who ever lived."
Vincent bursts into tears and I tear up as well. "Vincent. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Is it too much?" Theta rushes over to us in shock, "No. They are tears of joy. Thank you, sir. Thank you." Vincent kisses Doctor Black on both cheeks and hugs him. "You're welcome. You're welcome." Black spoke in awkwardness, "Sorry about the beard."
Black takes a few steps, stops, turns to see them gone. then mouths the word no; a small part of him thinking it was Vincent.
We land once more in his time, this time in the grove from one of his paintings. "This changes everything. I'll step out tomorrow with my easel on my back a different man. I still can't believe that one of the haystacks was in the museum. How embarrassing." Vincent laughs, "It's been a great adventure and a great honour." We all hug him once more. "You've turned out to be the first doctor ever actually to make a difference to my life." Theta laughs with a shake of his head, "I'm delighted. I won't ever forget you." Vincent finally turns to Amy who is the last one as Theta pulls Fay and I inside. Amy joining us just a moment later with a wide smile, "Come on. Let's go back to the gallery right now."
"Time can be re-written. I know it can. Come on! Oh, the long life of Vincent Van Gogh. There'll be hundreds of new paintings."
"I'm not sure there will.
"Come on!"
"We have here the last work of Vincent Van Gogh, who committed suicide at only thirty seven. He is now acknowledged to be one of the foremost artists of all time. If you follow me now." Amy paused with a sad frown, tears forming in her eyes as Fay grabs her hand. Theta grabbing mine in our own silent mourning, "So you were right. No new paintings. We didn't make a difference at all." She uttered out sadly, "I wouldn't say that. The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. Hey. The good things don't always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don't necessarily spoil the good things or make them unimportant. And we definitely added to his pile of good things. And, if you look carefully, maybe we did indeed make a couple of little changes." He leads us to the church painting, "No Krafayis." She laughs lightly, "No Krafayis." Amy goes over to the Still Life with Twelve Sunflowers. It has For Amy, Vincent written on the vase. "If we had got married, our kids would have had very, very red hair."
"The ultimate ginger."
"The ultimate ginge. Brighter than sunflowers."

I honestly didn't know what to do with this episode.
I'm sorry if it was all over the place, Kate and Fay didn't really do much in this one. I honestly wasn't sure I liked this one anyway, it was more for Amy if anything.
Anyway, Kate will definitely be in the next one. I haven't decided if I want Fay to stay with Amy or if I want her to be with her parents.
Can you guys decide for me?
Thank you all for the love and support!!
Also, I hope that Kate is developing well, I read another fic recently and the comments were pretty mean about the OC not developing well and her relationship with The Doctor is toxic. Yes, I was looking at another Doctor Who fic.
Anyway, I do hope that it's ok for you guys. I've tried to develop her, sometimes I get bored tho and I don't really care for the episodes like this one so it doesn't really move with my character's development. I'm sorry.
Anyway, three more episodes for this season. Whew.
Can't wait for you guys to see what's coming, anyone guess anything yet???
