(Scenes from Legends of Tomorrow Season 3, Episodes 15 and 16)

The Legends uncovered the sixth and final totem in 1950s Memphis. It was omitted from historical records because of its strong link to Mallus. Known as Death, it endows the power of necromancy and has been enclosed in a weighty case. That doesn't prohibit its attraction to Captain Lance. From the time it was obtained from Elvis Presley's guitar, she has been lately drowning in nightmares. It's during one of those instances that Director Sharpe spends the night on the Waverider. "It's okay," she reassures the startled captain. "Hey, I'm here. I thought you give nightmares, not have them."

"First time for everything."

The Time Bureau's director steadies her with her hand resting on her chest. "You wanna talk about it?"

"No, I'm... I'm fine." Turning on her side, the captain directly faces her bedfellow.

"So, who's John?"

"What?"

"You were calling his name in your sleep, and I was trying hard not to be jealous."

"No, it's probably John Constantine." The chairwoman raises her brows, unfamiliar with the name. "He's a demonologist who's helped me with Mallus and he kinda looks like Sting."

"He's just a... just a friend?"

"Yeah, you could say that. Yeah, we did... we did sleep together." Director Sharpe makes an uneasy "Ah" sound with an ironic smirk. "It was the 60s and everyone was getting wild."

"The 60s, huh?"

"Mm-hm."

"I thought I waited a long time between partners."

"The year was 1969, but it was like three weeks ago."

That wipes the smirk off the director's face. She looks down at her in disbelief. "Three weeks ago?"

"Yeah, three weeks before I have a girlfriend."

The last word gradually resurrects her smirk. "Did you just call me your girlfriend?"

"Maybe," the captain coyly replies. She giggles in response. "I mean, why not? John's fun..."

"Please don't talk about John."

"Well, he is no Ava Sharpe." The captain pulls the bedsheet over their heads. Before anything can happen, I let her know that she's needed in the bridge. Their dislike of my intrusion manifests into groans. Sorry, but duty calls. They both get dressed and respectively go to work.

The timestream is still in shambles; with all the extra anachronisms, the time cracks will become more severe as Miss Tomaz reports. Captain Lance splits the others into groups and assigns them an anachronism. She and Dr. Heywood are retrieving Albert Einstein from the Ice Age. Miss Tomaz and Miss Jiwe are acquiring Mona Lisa from the Antique Roadshow, and Mr. Rory and Mr. West are returning the dog Laika to the Soviet space program. A defiant Mr. Rory balks at chasing after a "Ruskie pooch". Dr. Palmer adds that he'll need him to repair the Fire totem. The captain tags Dr. Heywood with Mr. West; she'll find Einstein alone. She accordingly winces and plugs an ear.

"Are you okay," Miss Jiwe asks.

"Yeah, do..." She briskly grasps that only she can sense the inexplicable numbness. "All right, that's it. No snazzy send-off. Mama's got a headache." As everyone leaves, the dull ache spreads into both her ears. She goes to the Galley and pours herself a cup of coffee. "Do me a favor, Gideon." She douses a few teaspoons of sugar in her beverage. "Get John Constantine on the line."

"I'm afraid Mr. Constantine does not currently own a phone," I notify.

"Of course, he wouldn't," she mutters. The captain is called away by whatever is bugging her. She follows it to the parlour, where the Death totem is kept under lock. She unbolts the box, and I watch as she looks around and begins speaking to herself before she died the first time. I couldn't see what has transpired because every one of my internal monitoring systems is disabled afterwards.

Miss Jiwe and Miss Tomaz are the first pair to reembark. I hear them speaking about Mona Lisa being a self-portrait of Leonardo Da Vinci in drag. They find a drunk Mr. Rory in the library and a battered Dr. Palmer in the lab. The two women have thankfully found a pulse. Miss Tomaz presumes his mysterious attacker is still on board. I ran a scan on the unconscious scientist in the medbay: a collapsed lung, three broken ribs, a shattered femur bone, and a dislocated kneecap. The saboteur is fortunate that I'm incapable of rage. I want the person punished. While Miss Jiwe and Mr. Rory investigate, Miss Tomaz stays with Dr. Palmer. "Gideon, we need to reach Sara," she states. "Is there any way to message her in the Ice Age?"

"There is no need. The jumpship never left its hangar." It's within that exact second I have figured out what happened. Captain Lance is wielding the Death totem; she rendered me blind, which means she's the one who attacked Dr. Palmer. The fighting sounds in the Galley confirms my assertion. Mr. West extracts Mr. Rory and Miss Jiwe out of there before joining Dr. Heywood. With the other Legends hiding in the medbay, the captain initiates a system lockdown against my protests. A hologram of Agent Sharpe appears at the wrong time. "Hey," she calls. "So, I was thinking of the whole GF conversation we had earlier, and I—You look... good, great." Captain Lance must have a new look in effect of the Death totem. "Just, sometimes these holo-feeds can really wash out your skin. Did you do something different to your hair?" The captain says nothing and ignores her. I transfer the holographic director into the medbay. "What the hell is going on here? Mr. Rory, would you please move?" He does so.

"Sara's bonded with the Death totem," Miss Jiwe replies.

"What?!"

Dr. Heywood adds, "We think Mallus tricked her into wearing it."

"Look, the woman on that bridge was not Sara. All I care about right now is getting her back."

"We need to find John Constantine."

"The demonologist?"

"Yeah, he wears his tie a little too loose for my liking, but he has saved Sara from Mallus before."

"Gideon, can you up my pain medication," Miss Jiwe requests. "My leg's killing me." I can't because I can't. "Gideon?"

"The Nostromo sequence has been activated," I proclaim, "and will commence in T-minus three seconds. T minus two seconds."

"Gideon, un-commence," Dr. Heywood instructed.

"That option has expired." The Nostromo sequence is like the Gentleman's dreadnought excluding that it prompts the severance of all communication to and from the ship. All systems—including me—will be synchronously offline unless reactivation. Therefore, I am unofficially benched. I feel like being placed in storage again. On another note, I'm not collecting dust here. While I scour for anything to update and save myself from static boredom, I hope that Director Sharpe can reach out to Mr. Constantine. She surely can't be that jealous of him, can she?

She comes through at the end of the day. In addition, the Nostromo sequence is deactivated, and every injured Legend is on the mend. Captain Lance thanks Mr. Constantine with a drink in the parlour. "I should definitely come to your aid more often," he utters after tasting the liquor in his glass.

"Well, at this point, I might as well just make you a bed on this ship."

"Tempting."

The captain freezes the levity out. "If you thought Mallus would've freed Astra, you would've traded me, would you?"

"In a heartbeat." She can't fault him for being honest. "What can I say? I'm a nasty piece of work."

"So am I."

"You survived, love."

"For now."

"You know, there's a reason why I prefer to work alone. I don't have to share with anyone how lost I really am. But you're not alone, are you, Sara?"

"Maybe I should be," she mumbles.

"She's a good one. Try not to hurt her."

"That's what I'm afraid of." The captain walks into the medbay. She apologizes to the now-conscious Dr. Palmer and everyone else for inflicting physical and emotional pain on them. Miss Tomaz borrows Mr. West's superspeed to re-couple my mainframe. He liked the captain's silvery white form irrespective of the bloodthirsty urge for murder. Afterwards, she goes to her quarters where Director Sharpe waits for her. "We need to talk."

"No good conversation ever starts that way."

"Ava, I'm sorry..."

"Listen, I can't pretend to understand what you went through or... or what happened to you, but I know that wasn't you, Sara."

"That's just it. That was me." She looks defeated as she continues, "Just like fire is to Rory, there's a part of me that... it's always been there, and I really tried to pretend that it wasn't true. But deep down, I am death."

The director shakes her head. "No, Sara... okay, so we can fight that part of you together. Just tell me what to do."

She firmly recoils, "Ava, you read my file."

"But I still showed up at that restaurant in that horribly uncomfortable dress, trying to impress you, because I don't care about your past, Sara."

"Well, maybe, you should," she harshly retorts. Up to now, I haven't seen her choking up this way. "You are wonderful. And I... and I've never been this happy in my life."

"But this doesn't look happy."

"I don't deserve you."

"Yes, Sara, yes, you do."

"No, Ava, I don't. You deserve better. You deserve so much better, and I care about you, but..." The captain fights to hold back her tears. "I'm not gonna do this. I won't."

"Sara..."

"I'm sorry." She turns away from the misty-eyed director. As the latter approaches the threshold, she opens a portal to the Bureau and leaves. Captain Lance looks backwards to see her gone. She falls onto her bed and unveils a folded sheet of paper under the pillow next to hers. Sitting up, she unfolds it and reads:

This spot reserved for the girlfriend of Sara Lance.

She crumbles and tosses the note aside before she leaves her quarters.

Captain Lance has her regrets long prior to her becoming captain. However, her experience with the Death Totem and decision to end her relationship with Director Sharpe both weigh heavily on her mind. She consequently resolves to take a leave of absence. In the meantime, Miss Jiwe is appointed interim captain.

Mr. Rory seems to enjoy the perks of wielding the Fire Totem. He roasted hot dogs and popped popcorn in the lab. Interim captain Jiwe instructs Miss Tomaz to train him into harnessing the totem's powers. The latter is not so keen about it as she doesn't want to. When Miss Jiwe reports to the library, she isn't pleased to learn that her granddaughter, Mari, is injured in a fire while on a mission. She worries that it's because losing her totem means she didn't get to pass it on. She then chooses to talk to her injured granddaughter. Dr. Heywood opposes, saying that it'll cause unforeseen consequences. He and Mr. West volunteer to go to present-day Detroit in her place.

Meanwhile, Dr. Palmer stops the captain in the corridor, telling her that nobody blames her for what happened. "For what it's worth, I know that wasn't really you who tried to kill us," he says.

"But that's just it, Ray," she contends. "That was the real me, which is why I need to do this." A time portal instantaneously opens. They turn in time to see Agent Green coming in with his hand covering his eyes.

"Miss Lance? It's Gary. Sorry to drop in on you like this." He walks straight into a wall.

"What are you doing," she asks. My thoughts exactly. "Open your eyes, Gary."

He turns around and does what he is told. "Oh, hi. Sorry, I didn't want to accidentally portal into your quarters and catch you and Director Sharpe, you know..." What is he doing with his hands? "...together."

"Well, you don't have to worry about that anymore because we broke up." Both men are taken aback by the news.

"Wait, what," the astrophysicist declares. "Why didn't you tell us?"

"No, you can't break up," the visiting agent exclaims. "I was shipping you so hard." He was? I wouldn't have guessed.

Dr. Palmer deduces, "So that's why you're leaving."

"No, that's not why I'm leaving," she asserts as she boards the jumpship. "And if you're looking for Ava, I suggest you look in her office."

"Uh well, that's the thing." Agent Green informs, "She hasn't been to work in a few days, which is unlike her." This arouses the captain's curiosity. "I've already been covering for her. I've forged her signature twice. What am I supposed to do? Put on a wig and pantsuit and pretend I'm her?" They look unnerved by his strange assumption.

The captain openly answers, "No, don't do that." Please.

He hyperventilates, "What if she's in trouble? We'd already lost Director Bennett. What if Grodd got to her too?" The torment induces his anxiety, which sends him into panic. Oh dear.

Dr. Palmer tries to calm him down. "Gary, Gary, deep breaths. Deep breaths."

At that point, Captain Lance can't bring herself to say no. "Don't worry, Gary." She departs from the jumpship. "Because we are gonna find her."

Her teammate quizzically restates, "'We' will find her?" She gives him a silent glance that affirms her statement. So, the trio adjourns to the Time Bureau to find any clues leading them to Director Sharpe.

An annoyed Miss Tomaz bristles at Mr. Rory eating his fourth lunch in the lab, though he had agreed to start practicing after the second one. She recites "Be patient, be kind, abstain from negative thoughts" under her breath. She has been fasting due to Ramadan. However, he assumes she wants to lose some weight. He offers her a burger, but it has bacon in it. She rejects the unwittingly insensitive gesture.

He eventually comes around to beginning his training. She positions a teddy bear on the computer desk as his target. On the other hand, she's aggravated by his compulsive eating. He launches a fireball, destroying everything but the stuffed bear. She calls him an idiot for that. He retaliates, saying if she wasn't fasting, she wouldn't be "such a *itch". Miss Tomaz doesn't like being called that and unleashes her Air powers on him.

Mr. West finds Miss Jiwe exiting the Galley. He claims that Dr. Heywood lingered behind to convince Miss McCabe to quit being a vigilante. When they reach the bridge, her older granddaughter, Kuasa, is already there waiting for her nana baa. She returns her lost Spirit totem; she traded the historian for the totem. In other words, the Darhks have him detained. Mr. West exclaims that that wasn't part of the plan. He confesses that they intended to steal the totem back without Miss Jiwe's knowledge. She is outraged that Kuasa betrayed Dr. Heywood, regardless of him not being her grandfather. The two relatives call the other selfish. Miss Jiwe adds that Mari knows being a totem bearer means protecting all people, not just one's own. "It's no wonder the totem went to Mari and not you," she decries. "You're beyond redemption." Stung by her grandmother's unkind words, Kuasa leaves the ship. Miss Tomaz has Mr. Rory spinning in her twister for a whole hour until it involuntarily stops. The totems sense something bad has occurred. Kuasa, who bears the Water totem, is dead.

Captain Lance, Dr. Palmer, and Agent Green return along with an unharmed Director Sharpe. "Gary, you cannot tell anyone what you saw in 2213," the latter warns. "If you do, I will straight up kill you."

"But I'm terrible at keeping secrets," he acknowledges. "And every time I close my eyes, all I see is you." I don't know what to say to that. "I'll never get it out of my head."

The captain and Dr. Palmer exchange a knowing glance and nod behind them. "Don't worry about it, Gary," she remarks.

The astrophysicist redirects him into the lab. "Gary, right this way," he declares with a grin. "I got a flasher with your name on it." After his recollection of the previous events is wiped out, a solo Agent Green rejoins the Time Bureau. I have no doubts he'll be back soon.

In the library, Miss Jiwe mourns the loss of her granddaughter. Dr. Heywood owns up to going behind her back and trying to outwit the Darhks alone. She contradictorily blames herself for goading her into being like her sister. On another note, she wonders what would happen if she didn't sneak into the Waverider in 1942. He asks if that is what she wants. She doesn't know and departs with her totem in her hands.

I have let Miss Tomaz know it's sundown, so she's having her iftar meal in the Galley. Mr. Rory sees this and joins her. They admit to feeling Kuasa's death. Although she had tried to kill them, her demise is indelible. In addition, she was Miss Jiwe's granddaughter, and her totem is connected to the others. Miss Tomaz explains that it's why she cooks iftar. It's not just a part of Ramadan, but it also makes her feel connected to her mother. He understands what she means and offers her a half-eaten sandwich. It has pork in it, but it's the thought that counts.

I wasn't exaggerating when I said that Director Sharpe is unlike any other woman. As you may recall, I deleted File 354-Z per Agent Hunter's request. Here is the synopsis of the eradicated dossier: Director Sharpe is an Advanced Variant Automaton (AVA) clone. Yes, her given name is an acronym too. She was mass produced by a tech corporation in 2213 Vancouver to retain public order. This inherent directive is fundamental in recruiting her into the Time Bureau. Moreover, it's a larger reason why any visitation to 2213 is restricted. Everything in her personal life is a fabrication. Well, almost everything.

Captain Lance pours a drink for both the director and herself in the parlour. She inquires, "You all right?"

"You know, maybe you should wipe my memory too." The discovery of her true origins has confounded her. "How am I supposed to face the Time Bureau, knowing what I know about myself?"

"The same way that I face my team." She's speaking from experience. "We don't have the luxury of running away and hiding. Not with the fight we have ahead of us. Our team's gonna need us to lead them through this."

Director Sharpe reflectively drinks her scotch. Something still doesn't compute for her. "There must be some reason why I don't remember anything about 2213." She rises from the chair she was sitting in. "Or about being a clone."

"I'm sure there is," the captain reckons. "Who recruited you for the Bureau?"

"Rip."

"Well, I bet you that entire bottle he's the one who wiped your file from the Bureau and put 2213 off limits." Shall I make a large glass, Captain?

The director comprehends that precise guess. "Why would he do that to me?"

"I don't know, but we're gonna find out."

Unbeknownst to the other Legends, Miss Jiwe boards the jumpship after she ends her conversation with Dr. Heywood. I have a strong idea of where she wants to go. "Traveling to this time period is inadvisable," I tell her. "I'm sure Captain Lance would not allow it."

"Please, Gideon, I have to save my granddaughter," she pleads. "I must save my family, and no one is going to stop me." Without further delay, the jumpship decamps from the hangar.
