The shock that Vanessa felt at that moment was… indescribable.
There were millions of sinners in Hell. If not more. And it wasn't exactly set in stone where a sinner would fall to when they died. John had fallen in the Hell Hole, while Vanessa had fallen right here in Pentagram City.
The sheer odds that she'd have met James' older brother were astronomical, bordering on impossible. Not to mention she'd have never considered that as a possibility.
From the way James and Shiela would talk about John, Vanessa would've expected him to have been in Heaven before she'd have ever imagined him in Hell.
And yet… despite all odds, their deeply missed brother sat in front her, a matching look of shock on his own face as he too realized the connection they never knew they had.
And then… John threw his head back, and he started laughing.
It wasn't the typical amused laugh, either. It was a laugh filled with so much joy, so much relief, and he found himself so caught up in his laughter that he ended up flopping back onto the bed.
Considering how big he was, every time his body jolted in laughter, he rattled the entire bed. And yet, the longer she watched…
The more Vanessa felt the same.
It started as small, almost nervous chuckles. But the nervousness faded as the chuckles turned to giggles. Before she knew it, Vanessa was laughing to her heart's content right alongside the behemoth.
And why wouldn't she? She got to meet the brother that James and Shiela always talked about, and she'd never even realized that it was the kind behemoth she'd come to see as her own brother.
"Oh my god!" John found himself gasping in between laughter as he tried, and failed, to recover and regain his composure. "Me and you probably went to school together!"
"Yeah, four years apart!" Vanessa retorted as she found herself struggling to stay upright amongst her own laughter, and eventually, the arm supporting her gave out and she crashed down onto the mattress underneath her with a massive smile on her face. "You'd have been in high school by the time I started middle school!"
That only served to make John laugh even harder, and Vanessa found herself struggling to breathe right with him as his hands came up to hug his sides.
"Oh, it hurts!" John cried out, struggling to control his laughter as his breathing got harder to control. He forced his laughter to stop as took a few deep breaths, only to find himself laughing once more at the sound of Vanessa's own continued laughter.
Vanessa honestly couldn't say how long they laughed together, as it almost felt like an endless cycle. But eventually, their laughter died down to breathless giggling as they laid on the bed, trying to regain their composure.
"I'd have never imagined you were James' brother." Vanessa admitted as she propped herself up on her elbows, glancing down at the photo in her hand. "At least now I know why you two always seemed so similar." She commented as she turned to the behemoth and offered the photo back to him.
"The funny thing is that me and James couldn't have been more different when I was alive." John admitted with a small chuckle as he pulled himself back into an upright position, propping his arm up to keep himself upright as he reached over and took the photo from Vanessa's hand. "I was always the 'don't give a fuck' one between us. James was the quiet and reclusive one, and Shiela was the outgoing prankster from Hell." He commented as he slipped the photo back into his wallet, before leaning over and placing it back into his pocket.
Vanessa giggled at that, and found herself falling into the memories she had with the two of them. Memories she cherished.
"I remember when I found out Shiela was a superhuman." Vanessa admitted with a giggle. However, her words seemed to have the opposite effect than intended as any amusement faded from John's face and his gaze snapped to her's.
"What?" John sounded legitimately confused at that, before shaking his head. "Shiela's not a superhuman. At least, she wasn't when I died."
"She is now." Vanessa revealed, sitting upright as she looked at John in confusion of her own. "Or she unlocked her power, however that works. She's got… I guess it's like sonar? It's echolocation, the same thing bats use."
John raised a confused brow at that, his gaze shooting nothing in particular as he processed her words. "How does that work? She have to close her eyes or something?"
What? Why would Shiela have to close her eyes? It wouldn't matter either way, considering she's- wait… John didn't know?
"Shiela's blind." Vanessa revealed, causing John's gaze to snap to her in shock. "From what I know, it was a car crash. She took the worst of it, and though she made a full recovery, the nerves in her eyes were damaged. She developed echolocation in response."
"Shit…" John looked away, clearly struggling to grasp the revelation that his baby sister was now blind. A sad sigh escaped him, and he turned his gaze back to the succubus. "What about James?"
Vanessa shook her head, a sympathetic expression on her face. She couldn't imagine how that would feel, to find out one of your loved ones had been permanently scarred while you were dead.
If someone had told her that something had happened to her own brother in the time she died… she was positive she'd find some way to kill herself again in her guilt.
"James doesn't have any powers to my knowledge." Vanessa answered, bringing her hands to rest between her legs as she reoriented herself so that she was sitting cross-legged. "He was… just a big boy."
"Is he still stuttering?"
"No."
Finally, a fond smile took over John's face. A nice change compared to his overall downtrodden demeanor.
"Good." John nodded his head when he heard that, clearly happy with that bit of news. "His fucking dad had him a stuttering mess, and we all worked as best as we could to help him outgrow it." He explained as he glanced towards Vanessa.
"His dad?" Vanessa couldn't help but to question that, her brow furrowing in confusion. "Do you guys have different parents?"
"We're half siblings." John explained with a small chuckle. "Mom married their dad, Willie, and had those two before she left. But I don't care about specifics, those two are my little siblings, and I'd fight the world for them."
"I don't doubt it." Vanessa admitted, smiling as she brought a hand up and rested on the inside of his elbow. "They talked about you, sometimes."
"All good things, I'd hope?" John asked with a raised eyebrow. Vanessa couldn't help but to snicker as one particular thing she'd heard about John popped into her mind.
"Mostly." Vanessa assured, before looking up at him with a mischievous grin. "Though… they did tell me about the dents in the back of your grandpa's truck."
"Of course they did." John gave a playful eye roll at that, chuckling in amusement as he remembered the incident himself. "That was funny. Even if I got my ass chewed out afterwards."
Vanessa found herself giggling as she remembered what she'd been told in regards to the story. "Did you really just jump into the bed of the truck?"
"Yep." John nodded his head with an amused smile on his face. "It's a wonder I didn't destroy the whole back end. I busted the tires too."
Vanessa found herself giggling like a mad woman at that but of information, as her mind conjured the image of John hopping twenty feet into the air and then totaling a truck.
John turned his gaze towards her with a soft smile, watching her giggle with a fond look on his face as he allowed her to cherish her amusement.
Unfortunately though… they still had things to discuss. And not all of it was good.
"I uh… I got a question I need to ask you, alright?" John spoke up, his smile fading as Vanessa's giggles died down. The succubus' own gaze met his, and her amusement disappeared as well when she spotted the solemn expression on his face.
"About earlier?"
"Among other things." John admitted with a nod of his head. Vanessa found herself averting her gaze, bringing her arms up in an attempt to comfort herself.
She doubted the conversation that would follow was going to be fun, in any definition of the word.
"I'll… I'll just get the big one out of the way." John said with a sigh, before turning his eyes to her with a serious expression. "Were you… I hate to ask like this… but we're you raped?"
Vanessa froze at the moment the question left his lips, her eyes going wide as a stunned expression took over her face.
How did he know? How could he possibly know?! Did Angel tell him?
No, that couldn't be it. She knew Angel, and he wasn't the kind of person to blab a secret like that.
So… how?
Vanessa found her nervous gaze moving up to meet John's own, finding herself feeling… exposed.
Vulnerable.
She didn't like it.
"How?" Vanessa didn't say anything more than that… but she doubted John needed her to voice an entire sentence.
"You tense up and flinch away when someone touches you." John pointed out. Vanessa silently cursed herself, because of course he'd have noticed all the times she used to instinctively tense up at his own touch.
Not to mention Charlie probably told her about what had happened with Angel.
"I… do I have to talk about it?" Vanessa asked, her voice barely above a whimper. She trusted John, and at this point, after what they'd just discovered together, she could say that she trusted the behemoth completely.
But… she really didn't want to talk about that day.
"That's only if you want to." John assured, wrapping an arm around the succubus and gently pulling her into a comforting side hug. "I'm not here to interrogate you about it."
Vanessa felt a little bit better at knowing she wouldn't have to recount the events of her rape, but she still felt more than nervous that John knew. Still, that was outweighed by the reassurance that was his mere presence.
"I was… I was alive… when it happened." Vanessa could at least admit that much. "It's… it's the reason why I'm dead. I couldn't live with the shame."
"It wasn't your fault, Ness." John's voice was soft, his hand rubbing her arm gently and offering a reassuring squeeze. "Don't ever think otherwise."
"I know that." Vanessa replied, a sad sigh escaping her as she found herself pressing against John's side. A part of her worried that she might be hurting him, since her horns were pushing into his side as well… but then she remembered exactly what John was capable of. "But… I just… I can't seem to move past it."
"It's not that easy." John pointed out, a sigh of his own escaping him as he turned his gaze to face the wall. "I… I'm not gonna even try and pretend I know your pain… but I know what it feels like. Having your body violated." He admitted, his expression fading to an almost dead look as his own history came to mind.
"You… you do?" Vanessa couldn't help the surprise in her tone as she turned her gaze up to John. "But… how? You… you were a superhuman."
"Not for my entire life." John reminded her with a sad smile. "That's another reason why I don't like Willie. He'd beat me half to hell for something as simple as eating because I was hungry."
That was… horrible. But… How was that a violation of his body?
John must have noticed the confusion etched in with the sadness, because he shook his head and let a sad sigh escape him.
"I… I don't want to talk about it." John admitted as he turned his gaze back down to Vanessa. "But… I'll make a deal with you. If I talk about mine, you'll talk about yours. Maybe it actually will help?"
It was just a suggestion, and Vanessa knew that he wasn't trying to make her talk. Though she wanted to hear John's own story…
Maybe later.
"Not right now." Vanessa refused, shaking her head. "I… I don't think I'm ready, yet."
"Fair enough." John didn't push the issue, relenting as he turned his gaze back to staring at the wall. "But… there's one more thing I want to talk about."
"What?"
"I uh…" John looked… genuinely lost, as if he was struggling with how to actually word whatever his next question was. After a few moments, however, he let out a defeated sigh. "Charlie told me what you said when it was your turn."
Vanessa's hands found themselves in John's shirt, and when the sentence left John's mouth, her hands tightened into fists. However, the behemoth said nothing about it. If anything, his own hand tightened around her.
"I won't bug about… what we just talked about, but I need to know… what kind of shit does Val really put you two through?"
Vanessa's eyes wandered back up to John once more, taking in the soft look of concern on his features. He looked… almost desperate.
Andre's words rang through her skull, and she found herself beginning to contemplate her options.
As stubborn as John was, he meant his words. And considering he was the Angel-Slayer, she also knew that there was no reasonable way for Val to hurt John in the slightest.
However, she faltered for a second, averting her gaze as she remembered the reason she was even at the Hotel in the first place.
She could still hear Blaze's screams.
But when she looked back up at John, who was now offering a comforting smile…
"He's… he's so cruel…" Vanessa couldn't help the quiver in her face as she averted her gaze once more, and she could already feel the tears beginning to build once more. "He… he expects us to do whatever he says without question, and if we fuck up, make him mad, anything…" She had to stop herself as a sob escaped her.
"It's alright, Vanessa." John assured as the hand that wasn't currently wrapped around her raised, coming to rest upon her head as he gently stroked her hair in soothing motions.
"His punishments are… vicious…" Vanessa continued, unable to suppress the urge to gulp as she let go of John's shirt, opting instead to hug him directly. "The… the day you picked me up, I called Angel. There was this girl, Blaze. She tripped over an exposed wire, started a fire. And Val pushed her over a table, and he… h-he grabbed a bottle… a-and h-he-"
Vanessa found herself unable to continue, falling into a sobbing fit as she buried her face in John's side.
The behemoth himself had a rare expression of pure horror on his face, and he didn't need Vanessa to finish. He could figure it out himself.
"H-He rapes A-Angel… a-all the t-time…" Vanessa managed to get out between her sobs, as she felt John begin to gently rub her head and side as a source of comfort. "H-He's trying to f-find a way t-to r-restrain my t-tail… s-so h-he c-c-can m-make m-me-"
"Shh…" John interrupted softly, his voice reverberating through her ears like a flowing river as he comforted her through her tears.
Vanessa took that as her indication to stop, and she lost herself in a sobbing fit, soiling John's side in tears as her hands clamped down around him, pulling to herself against him.
She couldn't help but to let the tears flow for the second time that day, hiccuping as she failed miserably to control herself.
Why couldn't she stop crying?! For the second time that day, she'd been too weak to even talk about something without bursting into tears.
Why… why was she so weak? If she weren't so pathetic, Val wouldn't own her soul, she wouldn't have to strut around naked at her job with the impending threat of constant rape over her shoulders… Mike wouldn't have gotten his way…
She wouldn't be dead…
"Vanessa it's okay, you're safe." John assured, his voice barely above a whisper as she felt him lean down and place a gentle kiss atop her head. The behemoth wanted nothing more than to stop the poor girl's tears.
All Vanessa wanted right now was for John to stay where he was. She didn't want to be away from the behemoth right now… not in the slightest.
So John did exactly that. He sat, he whispered soothing words, offered gentle hugs, and he let Vanessa cry for as long as she needed to.
Vanessa wasn't like a little sister to him… by this point, she may as well be his sister.
And while he showed nothing outwardly, within the behemoth…
A storm was brewing. And by the time John was done… the Vees may as well be nothing more than history.
Charlie had done as John asked, helping Vaggie calm Leo before the two women escorted the boy back down to the lobby.
As time went by, everyone else in the Hotel had eventually found their own way to the lobby as well, and upon learning that John was currently talking with Vanessa, most had opted to wait until either of them returned to the lobby.
The only one not present at the moment was Alastor, whom had probably opted to hide away in either his room or his radio station to nurse his wounded pride if what Charlie had heard earlier was true.
But even Niffty sat upon the couch, rubbing Leo's back as a rare act of comfort as both of them sat. Unlike the cyclops' usual behavior, she was oddly silent, a surprisingly solemn look on the usually insane woman's face.
It honestly made Charlie wonder if Niffty was truly insane, or if it was something else. Split-personality, maybe…
But either way, that wasn't important right now.
It was dead silent in the lobby as everyone sat, waiting for some kind of update on Vanessa's condition. Not a single soul seemed interested in trying to start a conversation in the slightest.
Pentious and Angel both occupied the recliners, while Husk sat with Leo and Niffty. Charlie and Vaggie had opted to share the spare sofa, and no one was really paying attention to anything in particular.
No one really had any motivation to do anything but wait.
But after some time… Angel spoke.
"What's that in your hand, Pentious?" The spider asked, looking at the snake in slight confusion as he noticed the small box that was held in his hand.
"A music box." Pentious answered with a sigh, the telltale sign of a snakerattle accompanying it as the snake returned Angel's gaze. "I made it for Vanessa."
"Really?" Vaggie seemed genuinely surprised at that, looking at the snake in slight confusion. "But… you were ready to shoot everyone this morning."
"I would like to remind you that I said 'I'm really looking forward to shooting the other residents.'" Pentious pointed out, both his face and his hat somehow raising an eyebrow as he recounted his exact words. "I never said I'd planned on shooting everyone. To be quite honest… I think I was just looking for a bit of revenge against Husk and Angel."
"Why?" Husk asked with a raised eyebrow, looking at the snake with an irritated glare. "What did we do to you?"
The deadpan look on the snake's face said it all.
"Contrary to Miss Vaggie's belief, neither of you have actually been nice." Pentious pointed out, raising his own eyebrow as he returned the cat's look with one of disdain. "You've been sarcastic, rude, and downright antagonistic to me since I've been here, and I didn't exactly believe they'd take my word over yours."
"And that justifies shooting us?" Angel asked, crossing both pairs of arms as he looked at the snake in disbelief.
"Maybe not. But old habits are… quite hard to break, as I'm sure you know." It was a small jab, but it didn't change the fact that Pentious had unfortunately made a very good point. Angel actually looked like he felt a little bit of guilt when Charlie saw that he too had reached that realization. "But Vanessa, however, has done absolutely nothing wrong towards me. Quite the opposite, as she has a rather odd habit of inviting me to play those… what are they called? Video games?"
"That's how she tries to bond with people." Husk explained, a light chuckle escaping him as he shook his head in amusement. "She's offered everyone a chance to play some games with her. Even Alastor."
"Really?" The lack of manic glee or a wild gleam in her eye was quite startling, but even more so was the fact that Niffty had responded at all as she glanced up at Husk from the other side of the couch. "I thought Alastor doesn't like modern stuff."
"He doesn't." Husk confirmed, before another chuckle escaped him. "But it doesn't stop her."
"I'm surprised, considering how terrified she always seems to be around him." Charlie admitted, though inside, she felt pride in the succubus. Despite her justified distrust towards the Radio Demon, something admittedly shared among… everyone, she still made an effort to at least befriend the Radio Demon.
At some point, Charlie would have to address his weird behavior around her. Because, if she was being frank, it was more than old and way past frustrating.
"She's got a good heart, I know that much." Angel commented with a small grin on his face, before turning to Pentious with a genuinely apologetic look. "I'm uh… sorry, for snapping at you when you came by earlier."
"Considering I could hear her crying from the other side of the door, I must say that I don't blame you a bit." Pentious assured, waving it off with a soft smile of his own. "Though, I do believe that the threat was unneeded."
"Eh, it's Hell. Sue me."
Finally, something other than sad and depressing silence took hold as laughter erupted at that remark, though it didn't last for long as the silence returned quite quickly once the amusement died away.
"I uh… I don't say this often, so don't expect it again." Husk spoke up, turning towards Pentious with a furrowed brow. "But for what it's worth… sorry for being an asshole."
"None taken." Pentious assured, making it clear that all was forgiven. "I just hope that Vanessa will be alright."
Charlie found her gaze wandering over towards Leo, who still looked rather sad and depressed. It was clear that despite her attempts of comfort, Niffty wasn't exactly doing any good in cheering the boy up.
"Leo? Are you okay?" Charlie couldn't help but to express her concern as all eyes turned to the child. Upon seeing all attention on him, Leo gave a slight nod.
"I… I feel bad for scaring Vanessa." Leo admitted with a sigh, bringing his feet up to the edge of the couch and hugging his knees to his chest. "I didn't really know what happened, and I still don't think I do… I just know it was bad, and I feel like you made it worse."
"Well, let me put a stop to that thinking, cause you did nothing but help." Husk assured, offering the sinnerborn a small grin as he rested a hand upon his bony shoulder. "We weren't doing much good, believe it or not. We were focused on trying to keep her from hurting anyone. But those lungs of yours were what snapped her out of it."
"But… she was so scared…" Leo's voice was so soft, and he sounded utterly heartbroken despite Husk's attempts at making him feel better.
"Jesus Christ, you're just like your dad." Vaggie commented with an amused eye roll as she stood to her feet, walking over before crouching down in front of the child. "Look at me, Leo, alright?" She brought a hand up to his cheek, nudging his face from his knees to meet her gaze, and the moth offered a comforting smile. "She had a panic attack. It's… not anything you did, it was just a bad set of circumstances is all."
"But-"
"Hush." Vaggie interrupted whatever the boy was gonna say as she placed a finger over his lips. "Yes, she was still crying, but I think it was more because she felt bad than it was fear towards the end."
"The thing about panic attacks, kid? There's not always an actual reason for them happening." Angel explained, a sad sigh escaping him as he leaned back in the recliner. "All it takes is something as simple as a bad thought, and you're scared to death for no reason. But I ain't ever seen anyone snap somebody out of a panic attack as quickly as you did."
"He's right." Vaggie agreed, shooting the spider a genuinely grateful look before she turned back to face Leo. "We're all worried about her, I know you are too. But like I've been telling you, it's not your fault."
Leo held Vaggie's gaze with a sad look for a few moments… but he finally cracked an ever so slight smile.
Charlie considered that a win.
"If you say so."
"It's easy to think it's your own fault, even when it's not." A new, familiar, and very welcome voice interjected from the top of the steps as all eyes turned towards the source, where they spotted John making his way down the steps with a small smile on his face as he looked at Leo. "Take it from your old man, because I know that fact very well."
"Dad!" Leo immediately jumped off the couch the moment John finished his sentence, tears budding in his eyes and a joyful smile on his face as he bolted past Vaggie, rushing up to the behemoth and slamming into him as he clamped his little arms around John's waist.
"Hey, buddy." John greeted as he returned the hug with that same soft smile. "It's good to see you too."
"Is… Is she alright?" Leo asked, bringing his teary-eyed gaze up to meet John's own as he voiced his concern.
John offered a reassuring smile, and Leo let go of his father as the man crouched down to one knee and brought his hands to his son's face, tenderly brushing the tears away.
"She's fine." John assured Leo with a small smile. "After everything that's happened… she decided to try and get some sleep. I sat with her until she started snoring."
"Did you… did you talk to her about…"
"Yeah." John answered Charlie's question with a nod as he turned his gaze to the Princess, standing to his feet, and letting a hand come down to Leo's back and gently guiding him back to the couch as Vaggie returned to her own seat next to Charlie. "I uh… I got the info I needed."
"And?"
"And I was right." John replied with a sad sigh, shaking his head. "Not much else we can really discuss."
Charlie couldn't help the confusion and slight hurt she felt at that answer. It didn't help that her fears had effectively been confirmed in regards to Vanessa's trauma. But when Vaggie rested a hand upon her shoulder and subtly gestured to Leo, she got the hint.
"Hey, Husk?" John turned towards the cat demon, an apologetic look on his face. "I uh… I'm sorry. About earlier."
"It's no problem." Husk assured with a grin, waving it off. "Considering what you'd told us, I probably should've kept my mouth shut. I don't really know much about superhumans, considering they weren't exactly public knowledge when I was alive. You're the first I've heard of them."
"Charlie told me about that, by the way." Vaggie commented, glancing up at John with a look of genuine concern on her face. "Are you gonna be… okay?"
John let a heavy sigh escape him at the question, but he nodded his head. "I hate his guts, but Jack ain't someone to worry about." He assured Vaggie with an ever so slight grin. "He's… he's got some kind of moral code. No kids, no slavery. Hell, he deals in dedication, not souls, if I remember right."
"No, he deals in souls too." Husk corrected as he shot a glance towards John. "But most of the souls he actually owns are people who tried to attack him. Usually, their only choices afterwards are either being put down with a holy bullet or selling him their souls."
John opened his mouth to respond, before stopping himself as he closed it and look up in thought. Before nodding.
"Actually, yeah, that sounds like Jack."
"Okay, I missed something, who the hell is Jack?" Angel interrupted, tired of being left out of the loop as he raised an eyebrow. "Someone you know?"
"Technically, someone we all know." John managed a joke despite his history with the person they were currently talking about. "The intelligence Overlord, Flow? I knew him when he was alive. His name's Jackson Curry, and me and him don't exactly have a good history."
"How bad are we talking here?" Angel couldn't help but to raise an eyebrow, concern audible in his voice since he knew they were now talking about the one demon who knew everything in Hell. Even shit all the way down to the Sloth Ring.
"Well, last time I actually saw him alive, he damn near killed me. Last time I saw him at all, he was a half-charred corpse courtesy of a friend of mine."
"Oh, so we're fucked." Angel surmised, causing John to shake his head with a chuckle.
"Nah." John assured with a small grin as he met the spider's gaze. "He was at the Overlord meeting. And just like every Overlord there, he knows exactly what I'm capable of. Besides, like I said, he's got some kind of moral code. He ain't attacking us unless we attack him." He explained further, causing Angel to let out a sigh of relief.
"Good."
"While it's on my mind, though…" John turned his attention back to Charlie and Vaggie, a grim expression on his face. "I found out why they switched up the Extermination schedule."
At that, every single pair of eyes went wide as they all turned their full attention to the behemoth, eagerly awaiting that explanation.
"The ballerina Overlord, Carmilla, I think-"
"Carmilla Carmine?" Vaggie interjected helpfully, earning a grateful look from John and a nod.
"Yeah. She killed an Exorcist during the last Extermination, and Velvette or someone found the damn thing's head." He revealed, to everyone's complete and utter disbelief.
"How the hell did she manage that?" Husk asked in genuine bafflement, looking at John for an explanation.
In response… John laughed.
"The power of love."
Charlie found her brow furrowing in confusion, and she didn't miss the deadpan looks everyone else was giving him.
"Right, and the real answer?" Vaggie asked with a raised eyebrow, unamused at what they all assumed was a joke.
"The sad part is, I'm serious." John's amusement faded as he met Vaggie's gaze with a serious expression. "She was protecting her kids. Get an angel weapon and literally fight to protect rather than kill, and they're no more dangerous than anyone else in Hell."
Vaggie looked utterly shell shocked by that answer, as did everyone else as they digested that bit of information. And why wouldn't they? Admittedly… the requirements to kill an angel were laughably simple.
Suddenly, Husk broke out into loud, hearty laughter, gaining everyone's attention.
"You're telling me that I could've been killing those assholes myself?! All this time?!" He managed to get out between laughter, and admittedly, it was rather funny now that it had pointed out how simple it was.
Slowly, everyone else joined in with the cat's laughter. Even Leo was laughing to his heart's content, though whether because he found it funny or because he thought everyone else's laughter was funny, Charlie didn't know.
But she did know that despite her desire for peace, she still found herself laughing like a mad woman.
"Well, that works out a part of the mystery about how you can kill so many of them." Vaggie pointed out as she came down from her laughter, before her smile faded as she looked up at John. "But… that still doesn't explain why it comes so naturally to you. Or why you're immune to angelic weaponry."
"How do you know that?" Charlie asked, because she honestly hadn't thought that had been the case.
Vaggie simply shrugged in response, though.
"He fought and killed hundreds, if not thousands, of them by himself, with his bare hands." Vaggie pointed out as she turned back to Charlie with a smile. "Look at how big he is. Do you really think he managed to dodge every single weapon that was thrown at him? No offense." She turned back to John as she said that last bit.
The behemoth simply chuckled. "None taken. Hell, the Vees probably know that little tidbit too considering I probably put the fear of God himself in Velvette." He remarked with an amused shake of his head.
"How, what happened?" Angel sounded very interested in that part of the story, leaning closer as he found himself with a grin on his face.
A grin John returned.
"I pissed her off, so she put a gun in my face. I snagged her hand, and three seconds later, three flat holy bullets fell off my face." John explained with a chuckle, before his amusement seemed to fade as he let his eyes drift towards Leo for a moment, before turning back to face Angel. "Then she struck a nerve, and everyone in the room learned just how helpless they could really be against me. Including Alastor."
"I think Alastor learned that lesson when you sent him on a one way trip to the ground from the fourth floor." Vaggie commented with an amused smirk on her face. It was clear that she very much had enjoyed that particular incident.
Something John didn't seem to agree with.
"Don't remind me. Nonetheless, I made sure that we won't be dealing with any issues from the Overlords anytime soon." John replied with a slight grimace, before offering a smile as he turned to the moth. "By the way… I appreciate you taking care of Leo."
Vaggie's smile grew softer, and she nodded her head in response. "It's not a problem. You know any one of us would keep an eye on him for you." She assured as she met the behemoth's gaze.
Though… Charlie most certainly didn't miss the ever so faint shade of red that appeared upon the moth's gray skin.
Nonetheless, it was faint enough to go unnoticed by everyone else as they weren't paying enough attention. Even John didn't notice as his gaze left her when he let a chuckle escape him.
"I appreciate that, I really do." John replied with a small smile as he looked back down at Vaggie, before a sigh escaped him as he turned his attention to Leo. "Anyway, it's a bit late, and I think we should start following Vanessa's example." He announced as he moved over towards the couch, leaning down and lifting Leo up into his arms as he turned back towards Charlie and Vaggie. "When I get up tomorrow, we need to have a word about… well, everything."
Charlie agreed with that, and clearly Vaggie did as well, as both of them nodded as everyone stood to their feet.
"Today has been hectic, and I'm ready for some sleep." Husk remarked as a yawn escaped him, before turning and beginning to make his way out of the lobby with nothing more than a wave. "I'll see you all tomorrow."
Everyone followed his example as the day came to an end, and everyone began dispersing from the lobby, retreating to their rooms in hopes of a good night's rest.
In the dead of night, the Hazbin Hotel lay dormant, all of it's occupants currently wrapped up in a peaceful sleep.
Well… almost all of them.
If anyone else had been awake, they may have noticed a certain behemoth quietly making his way down the hall.
Then again, if anyone had been awake… the behemoth could be surprisingly sneaky when he wanted to be.
His usual heavy footfalls were absent, each foot hitting the ground in complete silence as John made good use of the training he had from his living life. And upon his face was a look of determination.
He made his way through the hall, down the steps, through the lobby… and out the front doors.
And then he kept walking. A purposeful expression on his face.
And the anger of Hell itself behind him.
