I don't own Disney's The Owl House. I do, however own the OC known as Danielle Hopkins. Hope you all enjoy my story on this lovely show.
Chapter Twelve
After having returned to the Owl House after the long day of body swapping, everyone was just resting after eating dinner. Scrounging around Eda's recent pile of stuff from the human realm, Danielle spots a certain game after a bit.
"Hey Luz," said Danielle, holding a chess board. "Wanna play a game of chess?"
"Oh… um… I'm a little rusty at chess," replied Luz, averting the chess board. "How bout twenty questions instead?"
"Then, another time?" asked Danielle, looking at Luz.
"Uh… sure," replied Luz, looking away for a brief moment.
"Okay, how do you want to start?" asked Danielle, placing the chess board down.
"Oh… back when we snuck into Hexside," said Luz, as Danielle quirked her eyebrow at her. "I mean, when I snuck into Hexside, during lunch when eating the peanut butter and jelly sandwich… do you not like peanut butter?"
"I've tried it but I'm not much for it," replied Danielle, looking at Luz. "I'd sooner eat Nutella instead. What about you?"
"I like it. From creamy to extra crunchy," replied Luz, looking at Danielle. "Okay, next question, how many video games do you have?"
"Too many," replied Danielle, sighing. "Beaten every one I've got on my swap and on my dad's super Nintendo."
"Whoa," said Luz, surprised. "That old console?"
"Yup," said Danielle, leaning back some. "Dad and his siblings only had a select amount."
"Oh, how many aunts and uncles you got?" asked Luz, staring at Danielle.
"Gramma and Grampa had four kids," replied Danielle, counting on her fingers. "From oldest to youngest, there's Uncle Kenneth, Aunt Reina, my dad, and Uncle Neil."
"I have only one each," said Luz, looking at Danielle. "Uncle Miguel is my dad's older brother and Aunt Rita is my mom's younger sister. How bout cousins?"
"From Uncle Kenneth marrying Alicia, I got four cousins, Lance, the twins Alexander and Nicholas, and Holly," replied Danielle, counting on her fingers again. "From Aunt Reina marrying Takeru, I got two cousins Izumi and Naomi. With Uncle Neil marrying Lillian, I'll be getting a new cousin sometime this September."
"Oh, congratulations," said Luz, looking at Danielle. "From my Uncle Miguel marrying Julia, I have two cousins, Julio and Sonia. Aunt Rita married Ephraim and has three little ones that are younger than me, David, Gabriel and Celia. Wow, your family is bigger than mine."
"It's even bigger on gramma's side," said Danielle, looking at Luz.
"How big?" asked Luz, staring at Danielle.
"Gramma has four siblings, and from there…" replied Danielle, thinking before looking at Luz. "I'll show you my family tree when we're back in our realm."
"Okay then… oh, what is your favorite region in the Pokémon series?" asked Luz, staring intently at Danielle.
"I'd have to say the first four regions are equally tied with Kalos behind it," replied Danielle, looking at Luz. "Looking forward to the next one?"
"Oh yeah," replied Luz, bumped up. "I'm looking forward to navigating Paldea with Fuecoco."
"Paldea, it's pronounced Paldea."
"Same here with Sprigatito," said Danielle, a slight smile on her face. "I'm just hoping it doesn't stand on its hind legs like what happened with Fennekin and Litten."
"Ha! Try again."
"What's with that face?" asked Luz, staring at Danielle.
"The Voice in my head just laughed at my statement," said Danielle, pinching the bridge of her nose. "Meaning Sprigatito is gonna be on its hind legs in its evos."
"Anything with Fuecoco?" asked Luz, staring at Danielle.
"Its last form is pretty cool."
"Says its last form is pretty cool," replied Danielle, looking at Luz. "Let's just hope it's shiny is good as well. There's bound to be shinies that make you say "What the heck were they thinking?", you know."
"Agreed," said Luz, leaning back. "Hey Danielle, is there any one that your grampa likes? Well besides your family."
"That's kinda… tricky," replied Danielle, deeply sighing as she stared at the ceiling. "White Europeans or European Americans, White Canadians or Canadian Americans, White Americans. Yeah, grampa is biased against… a lot. Don't get me started on religion or political parties."
"Wow, just wow," said Luz, looking at Danielle. "You said you went to St. Joan of Arc. Was everything bad there?"
"Well, I guess not everything," replied Danielle, looking at the floor. "But whenever grampa came and picked me up, well he didn't like who I got as my big buddy to help me around the school at the beginning."
"Sounds like whenever your grampa is involved things go badly," said Luz, looking at Danielle.
"Mason was an awesome person," said Danielle, sighing. "Sure, he dyed his hair a soft pink but it looked nice on him."
"Maybe we should get off this subject," said Luz, staring at Danielle.
"Yes… please," said Danielle, back to looking at the floor.
"Oh, I know," said Luz, scooting over to Danielle. "Ever been to an amusement park?"
"Yup, let's see," said Danielle, counting on her fingers. "I've been to Busch Gardens Williamsburg and Kings Dominion. When I was in Japan, it was Universal Studios Japan. I've also been to The Adventure Park at Discovery Museum and the one at Storrs."
"Wow, that's a lot," said Luz, shocked. "But I have been to the last one you mentioned, the Adventure Park at Storrs… and Hersheypark. They were pretty fun… and I had a lot of chocolate that day."
"Sounds fun," said Danielle, looking at Luz.
"Wasn't by the end of it," said Luz, chuckling slightly. "I threw up."
"Okay, let's see," said Danielle, thinking of a question. "Why are you so much into the Azura books?"
"Oh… um…" said Luz, hesitating. "Next question."
"Okay," said Danielle, wondering what that was about. "Um, I don't know how long you've been in Gravesfield but… did anyone ever tell you who started the ice queen rumor about me?"
"No," replied Luz, looking at Danielle. "I was in Gravesfield since sometime around when I was nine. We moved there cause there was a better hospital for…"
"Luz?" said Danielle, seeing Luz look away. "Are you…"
"Favorite pizza topping," said Luz, staring at Danielle. "What's your favorite pizza topping? Mine is meat lovers all the way."
"Pepperoni," replied Danielle, looking at Luz.
"That's it?" said Luz, staring at Danielle.
"No not really," said Danielle, looking at Luz. "I like putting red pepper flakes on it alongside ooey gooey cheese fries. Mom and dad could never understand at the beginning till they tried it. They like it just as well."
"Gross, I'll have to try it," said Luz, a slight laugh escaping her lips. "Hey, Danielle."
"Yeah," said Danielle, looking at Luz.
"Why are you so… I don't know," said Luz, leaning back some. "Perfect? I mean, you learn things so fast even Eda is having a hard time trying to figure out what to teach you next."
"I'm not perfect," said Danielle, in a low voice.
"What was that?" asked Luz, not quite hearing Danielle.
"I'm not perfect, far from it," replied Danielle, tracing circles on the floor. "Cook as much as I want, I'll never get my food to taste as good as what my mom's was."
"Danielle," said Luz, placing a hand on Danielle's shoulder.
"No matter how hard I try, it's never enough for grampa," said Danielle, staring at the floor. "He knows how my grades are top notch, I've never gotten below a hundred. He's pushing me to attend Yale."
"Yale?" said Luz, shocked. "Isn't that one of those ivy league colleges?"
"Yeah," replied Danielle, sighing. "But I don't even want to. Grampa says if you're striving for success, aim for the top. And since Yale is in Connecticut, he'll have easier access to coming to my dorm to make sure…"
"That's just wrong," said Luz, staring at Danielle.
"What's wrong is grampa scaring away everyone that I wanted to be friends with," said Danielle, placing her head on her knees. "You heard what I said that day, what he did to Masha. She wouldn't have that gap in her front teeth if grampa didn't strike her with his cane."
"Oh my gosh," said Luz, shocked. "He's actually attacked people?!"
"Grampa refused for a long time not to pay for Masha's dental bill," said Danielle, before looking at Luz. "Can we please change the subject?"
"O-okay, hmmm," replied Luz, thinking. "Oh, you said you've been to Japan. How was it tasting such a variety of food from there?"
"Delicious," replied Danielle, slightly drooling. "Everything I tasted was sublime… except for the sea urchin sushi I ate. That was actually nasty."
"I bet," said Luz, slightly drooling herself. "The animes make the food look so delicious, you want the real thing."
"My favorite sushi is Kanpyō-maki," said Danielle, thinking back. "My cousins gramma made it one day when we visited her in Kyoto and I've craved it ever since."
"I happen to like the spicy tuna roll and the California roll," said Luz, looking at Danielle. "Ever been to one of those festivals where you wear a yukata?"
"Yes, ooh that was so much fun," replied Danielle, starry eyed. "Aunt Reina would do my hair for the festival. I still have the souvenirs in my room… … except for the goldfish. Those stayed with Aunt Reina."
"Bet you were able to go up Tokyo Tower," said Luz, eyeing Danielle. "What was it like?"
"Scary… too high," replied Danielle, looking at Luz. "Same thing with Tokyo Skytree."
"What?" said Luz, looking at Danielle. "But you were on an airplane to get there. How…"
"I was sleepy before I even got on the plane," said Danielle, looking at Luz. "Was asleep for most of the ride."
"Lucky you," said Luz, before daydreaming. "I'd love to go to Japan one of these days."
"You'll like it. Just like here, it's a whole different world over there," said Danielle, leaning into Luz. "I was a nervous wreck at the beginning since it was just me over there without my dad."
"Why didn't your dad go?" asked Luz, staring at Danielle.
"He knew how much I was still hurting," replied Danielle, looking at the floor. "He thought maybe Aunt Reina and her family could help cheer me up. The vacation was only for me but… I still brough souvenirs for my dad… and mom whenever she returns."
"So, it was more of a vacation for you to recover," said Luz, looking at Danielle. "Yeah, I can kinda see that."
"My cousin, Naomi, would sometimes call me her yokai cousin," said Danielle, thinking back. "I can see why now. I must have done something in my sleep for her to call me that."
"Sounds like you didn't really like it," said Luz, looking at Danielle.
"Yeah, Naomi would study me a little too closely sometimes or hide while studying," said Danielle, cringing. "The latter actually creeped me out."
"You know, even before I moved to Gravesfield, I was called Luz-er at my old school," said Luz, staring at the ceiling. "I was hoping that wouldn't happen when we moved but it kicked in by a certain point. You can thank Sarah Harper for that."
"Ugh, no," said Danielle, groaning. "I've had to deal with her since the beginning. I had to go to the hair cutter cause she cut my hair one year. And dumped a jar of glitter on my head. Among other things."
"At least her twin brother isn't so bad," said Luz, looking at Danielle. "Brandon is pretty nice and has helped me sometimes."
"I may have… had a puppy crush on him at one point," said Danielle, slightly blushing while looking away. "But I grew out of it."
"When did that happen?" asked Luz, staring at Danielle.
"Sometime last year when I really started to notice guys," replied Danielle, looking at Luz. "Which reminds me, do you swing both ways?"
"I… uh… that is…" said Luz, stuttering up a storm. "I think I do. I'm not entirely sure myself yet. Hey, you heard about that math teacher… Mr. Wells, I think. I heard he pushed himself onto a student this year. Who was it…"
"I don't want to talk about it," said Danielle, gripping her coat.
"But did you hear who it…" said Luz, looking at Danielle.
"Please, just drop it," said Danielle, pulling her legs in and looking away with her head on her legs.
"Okay…" said Luz, wondering what that was about. "Let's see, oh. You said you favor isekai animes. Does that mean you like the reincarnation ones as well?"
"Goes hand in hand," replied Danielle, sighing. "Some isekai's fall under that and they can be just as good. What about you?"
"Magic," replied Luz, doing jazz hands and making Danielle laugh slightly.
"I think you can find that in any genre," said Danielle, before sneezing. "Achoo."
"Oh, Dios mío," said Luz, holding back a laugh. "You sneeze like a kitten."
"Can you forget that?" asked Danielle, looking at Luz.
"Oh, come on," said Luz, petting Danielle's head. "That was adorable."
"… …" said Danielle, slightly blushing. "You can stop now."
"Okay, okay," said Luz, before yawning. "Oo, how long have we been going?"
"I may have lost track," replied Danielle, yawning as well.
"Hoot hoot," said Hooty, curling around the girls. "Bedtime."
"Hooty!" said Danielle and Luz, as Hooty picked them up.
"Ah, looks like a good night," said Eda, hiding in the hallway during the whole talk.
"…" said King, snoring away on Eda's shoulder. "Cheese curls… yum."

After Hooty had dropped the girls in their room, and I mean literally dropped them in their room, the girls decide to settle in for the night. During the course of changing into their pajamas, Danielle and Luz would silently look at each other whenever the other wasn't looking. Luz, in particular, would look at the bracelet on Danielle's wrist.
"Could she… have been…" thought the girls, thinking about each other. "Could Luz/Danielle have been the one that Halloween?"
