Chapter 27

"I can't fix deep emotional issues," J'onn reminded them. He and Nia had arrived at ARGUS a little while after Kara's phone call. Now they stood with their friends outside the interrogation room where Nyssa had been giving a dose of real life to Kate's sister, Mary.

"We know but if you can break Enigma's hold on her… maybe, just maybe, we can free poor Agent Smith. How is Marie doing?" Lyla wanted to know.

"She's feeling a little better but we didn't get a chance to see if she needs our help with anything that Enigma might have left behind," Nia admitted.

"Well, she's not leaving the Tower, right?" Lyla asked.

"M'gann is keeping a close eye on her, along with Kelly and Queen Hippolyta," Nia told her.

"Called in the big guns?" Lyla was surprised to hear that the Queen had made herself known. She didn't often leave Themyscira but when she did, it was not for a trivial visit.

"She found us," Nia said. Lyla nodded. Diana must have put out the word.

"Let's get this show on the road. I need to make a call," Kara gave them all a nudge and J'onn and Nia headed into the interrogation room.

"Come to torture me with mind games?" Mary asked, with a raised eyebrow.

"We've come to find your humanity, if it still exists," J'onn did not mince words. Mary smirked before saying,

"I brought your Agent Smith to the hospital."

"I'm still not convinced that wasn't for some ulterior motive but I guess we will soon see," J'onn moved closer to the woman, who was handcuffed to the table, and pressed his fingers to her temple. It took no time at all and he was inside her head, working his way around, trying to see if he could find what he could not find before.

"Kate is glad for the update and she told me that we do what we have to do. She's teetering on the edge though," Kara shook her head.

"She wants her sister back but I'm not sure that the Mary she knew is in there. If we can break Enigma's hold and get information from her. I can make the argument for her to be released into the custody of the mental health system. Though it would be treatment inside a secure ARGUS facility," Lyla admitted.

"Kate would much rather have that than jail but she's more worried that her father will not go along," Kara said.

"He'll make do. I'll make sure of it," the ARGUS leader told her. Kara's phone rang, interrupting their conversation. The blonde quickly answered it and was relieved to hear her sister's voice.

"We have a lead on Enigma," Alex said.

"How'd you stumble on that?" Kara was pleased but also a bit surprised. The criminals had been ahead of them since she returned to National City.

"Debra and that gun you told me about. Seems the walls at the motel aren't as thick as she would have hoped. Mary and her male counterpart were arguing and then she heard the shot. She gave us a description of the man who ran away and got into a black sedan. The motel actually has a security camera at the registration desk, which you have to drive by when you leave," Alex explained.

"You got a license plate?" Kara was excited.

"We did. It came back as stolen but the fingerprints from the motel room came back to a man who goes by the name of "Syke". His real name is Logan Sykes. Not very original in the name department but his record indicates he likes to steal cars and where we can most likely find him," the redhead said.

"Give me an address. I'll meet you there," her sister said.
