I don't really have a strong ship-tie to this pairing, but I think when they're older, it could be something. ;)

Prompt:

Cream stared out her window. Both hands held her head upright as she scanned the skyline…

"Cream, dear?" her mother called, and she immediately held her gaze just a little longer. Her eyes lingered with expectation, before quickly closing and shutting tight.

"Coming, Mama!"

"Cream! There you are… Oh?" Cream ran right past her, heading for the coat-hanger near the door. Cheese flew worriedly after her, trying to put on his own coat, but struggling with getting it on while it still held on the coat-hanger's clutches…

Vanilla held a curious look before giggling at her sweet daughter's antics. She held the backend of her hand over her mouth daintily, "What's all the rushing about for?"

"I'm sorry! I tried not to run indoors, Mama." Cream looked quickly over to her mother, before reaching desperately for her red hat, with a yellow and white flower sown into it.

Vanilla walked calmly over, and got the hat down for her, helping her put it on.

She knelt down as she tied the hat's long fabric under her chin. "There must be something you want to do today…"

"Em-hmm. Mr. Tails promised me I could go for a ride in his X-Tornado!"

Vanilla's hand froze a moment, her face blinking in surprise. "…Just the two of you?"

"I promise I'll listen to Mr. Tails!"

"Chao, chao!" Cheese flew in-between them then.

Cream giggled and held him close. "And Cheese promises to watch me extra super much today!"

"Oh? Extra super much?" Vanilla looked over to Cheese, who happily did a reassuring spin and fist pump in the air.

She smiled, but worry still held on her face. "…Be safe, deary." She leaned down and kissed her forehead. "I trust Tails to look after you… but…" she looked out the top window above their door frame…

"Tails usually doesn't fly on such weather conditions…"

"We'll be alright! And you told me when I get a little bigger, I could! I've drunk lots of milk, mama! I'm ready!" Cream had certainly grown up, but her polite and sweet demeanor never shifted, along with her innocence.

Vanilla nodded, having a sweat drop lightly skim the side of her face. "Y-yes… I did say that. And I'm a mother of my word." She gave her a tender look, "Farewell, but be back soon."

"Okay." Cream politely addressed her mother and nodded, sticking her face up, "Look, Mama! I'm big enough to touch your nose!" she laughed, hopping on her tippy toes before taking off.

"You certainly are growing…" Vanilla held her heart… "And he's certainly not as oblivious to that as he used to be." Vanilla sighed.

Even with her comment, however, she got up and dusted herself off…

A sweet smile on her face.

"Mr. Tails!"

"T-Tails will do. We've known each other for years now…" Tails still felt a little awkward with her being so formal around him, but he knew that was just how she was.

He leaned shyly against his tool table and lifted a toe up to tap it lightly in the air.

He was so nervous! But Sonic told him to be brave and go for it! E-even though Sonic didn't know what he wanted to do.

Still… Sonic's advice was always appreciated.

He rubbed he back of his head, excited nerves making him fidget. "You look nice." He felt his palms getting a little sweaty and quickly moved his hand from his slicked-back hair.

"Chao?" Cheese flew over and circled him, noticing the touch-ups he had made to himself.

"Ah… H-hey, Cheese." He was even shy around Cheese… After all, by this time, everyone just considered Cheese an extension of Cream anyway.

Cream bounded up with excitement after removing her shoes at the door.

"Oh, you'll need those!" he instructed, lurching forward a moment as a piece of hair swooped down from his iconic three long hairs.

"Ah!" Cream was about to hurry back, but noticed the strand and walked up closer. "Mr. Tails… You're…"

Embarrassed, Tails quickly adjusted his hair. "I-It isn't much! I just wanted to look nice today! T-that's all…" he kept his eyes upon his hair, pretending to adjust more just to do something with his hands. Nervous fidgeting opportunities were hard to come by…

At least it gave him something to do while he waited for her to get ready.

She suddenly beamed and gave him a close-eyed smile.

"You look wonderful, Tails!"

He held his breath. Sucking it in, it felt like he face had frozen and his eyes carried his sight in a straight line.

They only moved to look down and admire her sincerity in saying such a kind thing.

He had only done small… refinements… but his self-esteem was always a little tricky and it helped when people noticed.

"T…Thank you." He lowered his hands slowly as he watched her run off to get her shoes, enamored by her considerate disposition.

She slipped on her tiny shoes and adjusted them on with a quick pat.

She then ruffled down her dress and ran excitedly back to him, grabbing both his hovering hands and hopping on her tippy toes again.

This action, the small bouncing hop, was a common new trait Cream had.

She seemed restless for anything other than staying home. Her teenage heartbeat with the same longing for excitement as Amy Rose had once described was first apart of her, when she went running for Sonic— and now, at last, maybe Tails can give her curious and expanding mind a sense of freedom and exploration like she wanted.

She had occasionally tagged along with Sonic and his friends, but due to the limits of her age, her mother had advised her to be cautious about what adventures to participate in and when it would be best to stay behind.

But now that she had her own mind about her, she was set on not missing a single thing!

She was working on becoming a nurse, but more so, she wanted to do thrilling and exciting things too.

"You promised to show me the workings of the plane before we boarded!" she remembered with such enthusiasm that she once again stole his second breath and left him gazing at her once more.

He had never met someone, especially a girl, who was strangely passionate about the things he was into.

"O-…Okay."

"Hehe~ Thank you, Mr. Tails!"

"T-…Tails is fine."

He was still nervous, but Cream listened intently, learning and wanting to know everything. Her inquisitive brain helped open channels for Tails to speak more boldly, more with experience and precise courage; he was in his element now and began to grow just as excited as her to fly the plane.

"Wow! I haven't felt this pumped to fly in ages!" he clenched his fists, feeling a rush within him. He wanted to show her everything about the sky! The way the gauges told different altitudes and air velocities, the speed and gas were cool too, sure— but had she even seen the things he invented and added to the plane to shoot out Sonic's power-rings or house a Chaos Emerald's power?

He flew up, hand in hers, as she used her floppy ears to fly with him as he helped her into her seat.

"This is an older model." He admitted. "I wanted to give you something classic to start with. F-for a first joy flight." He didn't know if he should admit that he just thought it cool to have a girl in his very first biplane.

The seats were stacked in front of the other, close quarters, with one windshield overhead.

He jumped with a pilot's vigor into the cockpit and strapped in. "You all buckled up?" he asked, flipping some switches, and kinda excited to tell her what each one meant.

Though…

He grew embarrassed, "I… I'm probably talking too much. I should ask you something." He closed his eyes, allowing himself to call out his own blunder.

She strapped on the seatbelt, and immediately shook her head. "Oh no! I love hearing how passionate you are about your planes! It's amazing to hear how much you know, Mr. Tails! You must have worked really hard to learn so much. It must help to have a deep love for flying like you do."

He blushed with a sweet smile, leaning on the back of his chair, slipping slightly down further than he should into it. "You're so sweet~" he muttered.

"Huh?" Cream batted her eyes and lifted her ear up, tilting her head cutely. "I'm sorry, Mr. Tails, I didn't hear you very well."

"U-uh, engines going, so you might want not want to hone in on anything!" He jolted up and turned the plane on.

She covered her ears a moment before the platform in front shifted, an angled runway.

"Ah! Like Mr. Chris's world!" she held on to his seat, leaning forward.

"Em-hmm." Tails nodded, bracing for the impact of the blast off. "I wanted to keep some of what I learned from the past… so I changed up my home's scenery a bit. Updated my lawn too, so to speak." Slightly gloating, he loved the feeling of someone actually being interested in all his little odd and in projects. He rubbed the back of his head and blushed again, not even in the air yet, but still enjoying this figurative 'ride' Cream had already set him on.

"Alright! We're gonna take off soon! You might want to lean back, and make sure you keep inside the windshield."

"The what? Oh…" Cream looked up, amazed as the device moved over their heads.

"The windshield. It's different than a car's. It keeps us safe from the powerful windspeeds the plane can generate."

Then they were off.

In his excitement, Tails didn't see his little weather device… blinking severe red lights in sequence, showing the dial dangling at the end of the meter…

Tails really cranked up the juice in his old baby, doing loop-de-loops and other aerial fleets and dives before a spark of lightning crashed in the distance.

"Ah." Tails suddenly became white as snow, his hands shook at the sticks…

"Ah… What's that? Lightning?" Cream moved to the other window. She tightened the helmet Tails had passed back to her when her eardrums had first popped and watched Cheese clung to her, trembling.

"Mr. Tails… Wah!" she felt a surge of fear lightning struck by the flying plane. "Tails!" she turned to see him stiff, staring down with eyes heavy and trembling.

"I… I can't…" he could barely speak. "I… I can't fly… in … lightning."

Another powerful hit.

Cream, still in her fear, looked at his face.

In a sudden burst of compassion and bravery, she squeezed through the space on the top between the windshield above them and their seats and slammed her hand down on a button.

It snapped Tails out of it for a moment as the windshield came down, and the drizzle of the on-coming storm started spraying in their faces.

"W-what are you doing..!?" he looked at her hand, seeing she had paid attention.

She undid her seatbelt and started climbing forward, moving to his seat.

"C-Cream! Don't! It's dangerous!" his hands twitched, but he still couldn't move.

The wind beat against her, and she clung for a second to stay on, her ears flapping in its force.

"C…Cream…" He was amazed, seeing her sit in front of him and adjust her feet to where his feet were, and her hands to where his hands held motionless.

She stabilized the plane's shakiness and flinched at the lightning far away, only closing one eye to it as she continued to keep her brave face on.

Tails ducked his head, clenching his teeth in his fear, holding it just by her neck.

"Mr. Tails-san." She started, and her voice broke the sound of the approaching storm.

His eyes flung open at it's stern, but loving call.

"You love this plane, Mr. Tails. And I know you can steer us to a safe landing."

He looked up, only seeing the back of her head. "Cream…"

"I believe in you, Mr. Tails. I can help you, but you have to fly this plane."

Cheese was struggling to remain in the backseat, crying out as he gripped to the now wet and slippery seatbelt. "Chao..! Chao..!" he was being yanked around by it being gusted by the powerful wind.

She turned her head, that sweet smile still there, but with a powerful look of trust in her eyes.

Her eyebrows narrowed.

"Help me fly this plane, Mr. Tails!"

His eyes widened.

"Help me be here for you!"

He closed his eyes and willed his hands to shake.

They did so, and Cream found it confusing. She wasn't sure if she should firmly keep them steady or remove her won hands from his.

But as her hands started to drift from his, he immediately let go of the controls and grabbed her retreating hands, pulling them back to the controls.

He then nodded, a brave face taking its own form upon his face.

"Grr… Cream! Bank right!"

She looked down at the controls, "Uhh… This stick goes this way and…"

She nodded and quickly went with her gut.

As she pulled one stick towards her and the other away, her body was shoved in the opposite direction with Tails's arm to take the damage, dodging an oncoming wind-turbine.

"Now, stabilize just below the horizon!"

She felt the plane wobble under controls, but she knew Tails couldn't do this alone.

'I…' she struggled to see from the wind lashing against her face. 'I must be there for Mr. Tails! I can't give up! I must pull us through!'

She stabilized the plane, as he slowly let the controls go in the calmer winds.

"H-huh?" Cream turned back to him.

With twitching from his phobia, he tried his best to take the goggles that were on her helmet, and pull them out and over her eyes, being careful to adjust them and not hurt her.

He then wrapped his arms around her. "T-thank you, Cream… I can do this now… I can do this.." he moved his hands back to the sticks where her hands were.

Cream turned to thank him for his kindness in the goggles, but was taken aback from the powerful look of resolve and fortitude upon Tails's face…

He had grown from the boy she used to know… and though she had noticed… she never really saw it any differently…

Except for today.

The plane was landed without a hitch, and Tails pulled out a blanket and snuggled up close to Cream far from trees and the metal plane… seeking shelter in what looked like an abandoned shack for storing produce.

However, with no crop for this year, it was barren and empty, and the two watched the storm as Tails had to duck his head every now and then, clinging to Cheese who cooed tried to get him to pet his head for comfort.

Cream leaned her head on his trembling shoulder… Closing her eyes a moment.

"I.. I'm sorry, Cream…"

She opened her eyes then, and looked up at him, moving slightly away to see his expression.

His mouth was shaky… and his eyes were shut tight.

"I… I failed you… I'm so useless…" he dipped his head down, trying to hide his tears in the warm, fuzzy blanket.

She felt so much then… seeing him like this…

"Mr. Tails." Her voice held resolution and carried through the rainstorm.

His head jolted, but his eyes weren't seen. However, Cheese was crying under the blanket with him, seeing how distressed Tails was, and not knowing how else to help. "Chao…"

"Everyone holds weaknesses, Mr. Tails." She continued, not an ounce of pity or deceit. It was absolute certainty of fact, which held Tails's ears to her sound… a strong, but calming voice, just like her mother's…

"Everyone must face their fears… I've had many." Cream looked away, before suddenly lunging into a hug.

It startled him, as he lifted his head and his eyes shook.

"I'm scared all the time!" She admitted, squinting her eyes. "I was scared that I'd blow away. I was scared I wouldn't see Mama again! I was scared that you'd get hurt, Tails!"

Tails fought against further tears, or even allowing her to hear his slight sniffles, but they were they, and they were apparent.

"But I found a way… Just like you! That's why you love flying, isn't it?" she moved away from the hug and looked up at him, seeing him breaking down again as lightning struck.

"We find a way… Everyone… We all love whatever helps us fight our fears… you're not weak, Mr. Tails… you're the most powerful of all."

She lovingly moved her head over him and laid slightly over his hunched body. Turning her head, her warmth did comfort him, and his tears and trembling subsided…

"You're a conqueror of natural flaws. And that's as powerful and useful as anyone can ever be."

"Cream…" he leaned up, moving the blanket and staring at her.

He dipped his head down.

She wiggled her head slowly left and right, not sure what was really going to happen next.

He realized this, and pulled away, smiling. Feeling he might have misread,… he simply bumped his forehead to hers.

"I really needed that… thank you, Cream."

She held herself in contemplation for a moment, before maturity set in and she leaned up and kissed his forehead.

She came back down and cuddled up under his arm, wrapping the blanket cutely around her and grabbing Cheese from his legs, tucking him by her stomach.

She closed her eyes and Tails studied her a moment…

When he realized she wasn't going to explain what she got and didn't get, he simply pulled the blanket more over her and swiped his two tails out in front, to keep both of them warm, before closing his own eyes… waiting out the storm.

(…I'm actually really proud of this. Dang it, I might ship it XD)
