Prompt:
I need you.
It was a distant voice.
Blaze…
"YOOHOO! Aye, mate. You were out like a ROCK just now! Squirming like a worm on a hook!"
Blaze's eyes strained and the lids, filled with sleep on the sides, finally opened as Marine continued to ramble on.
She couldn't really pay attention, getting up and wiping the scratching pebbles of deep slumber from her eyes, feeling them grow wet from the dryness of the air.
"Oi… you cryin'?"
Blaze turned to her friend, again looking exhausted before shaking her head. "No." she responded, but something in her heart wished she had woken in tears.
It had been two days since returning to her dimension, and all she could think about was the desperate plea for her to stay…
Silver had no memories of her… and yet…
She looked at her hand.
"…I was just thinking about an old friend…"
"Why old? Did they grow up?" Marine sat next to her, jumping to reach the windowsill where she fell asleep and working on navigation systems for her ship. She just wanted to make sure everything sparkled before taking it out into the ocean.
"…You could say he is an old spirit." She smiled, thinking about his sense of valor and responsibly. "But I'm afraid he's not really wise." She lifted her leg up and held it a moment as she rested her head on her knee.
The atmosphere turned tender as her eyes drooped to the only memories she had left of Silver. Blurry. Very, very murky images of red, white, and yellow. All surrounding her except the piercing white before she was taken away.
She couldn't remember passed Silver… but Sonic seemed familiar to a degree, but not enough to really count it as anything.
Maybe he just had one of those faces…
"You seem to miss your friend, there."
Blaze snapped out of her thoughts and leaned her head up, surprised a bit by her words. "Do you think so? What gave you that impression?" she inquired.
Marine shined her old compass, and then smiled sweetly to her friend, "'Cuz you were spacing out, Blaze." She then dropped what she was preoccupied with and looked at her more sincerely, "Blaze… why is he an old friend?"
Blaze felt a sting in her heart and looked away.
"He…" a wave of sadness flooded her, covering her from head to toe. "…He can't remember me… and maybe he shouldn't." she sighed, "It was a dark time back then… all I remember is that it was painful… and yet… with him, it seemed… almost…"
Hopeful.
She smiled and looked down again, "I'm sorry for troubling you. I shouldn't have-"
"You can fall asleep anywhere and anytime. I'm just happy you felt like stoppin' by 'ere." She jumped down, "But quick with the drama already! Yikes! If he means this much to ya, and if you really say he can't remember you, then enough with the gibber-gabber! Go and make new memories with him!" she threw her hands up and got loud again, but this new concept made Blaze stare at her a little more earnestly now.
"New… memories?"
"Screwth the old!" she laughed, then pointed straight into her face. "Are you history?! Or the future?!"
Blaze felt something light up within her. A deep desire to be apart of his future.
She had never thought about it that way. Thinking it was to protect him from an awkward situation, and since her memories were so vague anyway…
Immediately, she rose to her feet and straightened herself out.
In the distance of her mind, she could hear the echoes of his voice… calling to her again…
"I…" she clenched her fist. "I want to be apart of his future! The future I helped him bring to pass! I don't want to be lost to the past! Even if I don't know everything that happened to us…" she was trying to gain faith and shook her mind free of doubt.
"Thank you,… Marine!"
Marine, with a smug grin of pride for helping her friend out, nodded and gestured for her to move along. "Whelp, my job 'ere is done." She fanned her hand out behind her as she went back to repairing and shining up her ship.
Blaze stormed through the dimension in search of Silver, hoping to start a new friendship with him again. This time… one that wouldn't need to be forgotten… but upon arriving- she realized that great calamity had struck once again.
She was just here… how is that possible!?
"Blaze!" Amy ran towards her, outrunning a fleet of badniks.
Blaze narrowed her eyes and targeted them, firing blasts of powerful fire fists and kicks towards them. "What's going on?!"
"Silver is being held hostage by some sort of interdimensional beast! It's spooky!" she hugged herself, before shaking her head. "It's using his power over the future to corrupt the past! I'm not sure of all the details… but Silver was holding two Chaos Emeralds! Without those emeralds, Sonic can't turn Super…! Sonic can't… he's got too… We have to save Silver!" she clung to Blaze for a moment, who was getting used to Amy's intimate need for contact at random times.
"I… I understand." She leaned back, before lightly lifting Amy's hands off of herself and lovingly reassuring her. "I don't know how, but I think Silver was trying to reach me through his dimensional power. I'll find him better if I try and connect to that link… somehow."
Amy moved away, amazed by Blaze's words. "You… you can connect to him?"
"I'm not sure why or how but…" She wondered if it was linked to their alternative past and friendship…
"AWW!" Amy clamped her two hands together and let out what Blaze thought was a cry.
"What is it!?" she immediately flinched back, wondering what on earth she compelled her to make such a noise.
"Just like me and my Sonic! If you truly love someone, you can always feel their presence with you! And if you know them well enough… even know what they're thinking about." Amy's hands reached up to cup the sides of her face, her eyes sparkling with a magic Blaze didn't understand… perhaps that's a level of friendship she just doesn't comprehend?
"You… think I can read his mind?"
"Oh! You don't get it!" she thrust her arms down, pouting before turning Blaze around and pushing her off into a direction. "Come on! I'm sure we'll find Silver! As long as you two don't push away your feelings, I just know that you'll connect to each other again!"
"My… feelings?" Did Amy know about her conflicting past?
"Trust me! Once it's off your chest, you'll feel so relieved!" Amy threw her arms up in the air, as this action caused Blaze to stumble from her once forced stride. "It will feel like walking on air~" Amy's eyes twinkled again, and Blaze felt confusion fog her understanding once again.
"You… You really think we're… Close? After such few days working alongside each other…" that smoldering fire alit once again in Blaze. That hope… That maybe… She could have whatever she had lost.
"Certainly! Absolutely! Oh, Blaze! Two girls in love have to stick together!" She spun left, spun again right, and then raced into Blaze's arms. A tight hug ensued with an awkward return of discomfort from Blaze.
"U…Um." Blaze would never understand Amy's overenthusiasm but decided against questioning it. "I… suppose I care about what happens to him." She felt worry then, as the clock was ticking…
Quite… literally.
She looked up into the clouds, "Amy… do you know where Silver is? Or should I try and connect to him now?" she walked out of Amy's grasp, not returning any affection, but remaining friendly and polite.
Just… serious.
"Oh…! Right." Amy blinked, her hands still outstretched from being removed from around Blaze, but then turned them into hanging shrugs. "No idea." She smiled weakly, leaving a humorous and awkward sweat drop to skim by the side of her face; lingering ever so slightly as to be fully seen.
"…Then…" Blaze held her hand to her chest. "I will try and communicate to him." She turned around, lifted her head, and closed her eyes.
Silver…
She felt herself resisting for a moment. Why did she feel so resistant to being… vulnerable?
Where are you..?
Then a loud voice rang in her mind, shocking her enough to open her mouth.
Above you! Look above!
Blaze opened her eyes to see a portal, wiggling and contorting it's perfect circle as though struggling to stay open.
"Blaze!"
A voice cried out.
"Silver!" she burst into Burning Blaze and flew at lightning speeds into the portal.
She found Silver, trapped in what appeared to be a misty up-current that rushed over his half-exposed body.
He was twitching in his efforts to keep his hand out and using his power to summon her there, as Sonic was in a choke-hold by the misty-form of what appeared to be the dimensional beast.
He turned around, glowing orange eyes that reminded her of Iblis, triggering a memory she fought out of her thoughts as she went to fight him.
Miraculously, Blaze was the saving grace they needed to win. Freeing Silver, he trapped the beast with Sonic and they both turned Super.
Blaze helped confine the monster into a dimension with absolutely nothing yet created in it.
"Darkness… you don't think we just sent evil into that world, do you?" Sonic addressed Silver, who shook his head.
"There was nothing I could sense from it… I think it was dormant."
"Every world has evil… it's not like we introduced it." Blaze spoke up as Silver and Sonic turned to her, as if just now addressing her presence.
"Thank you." Sonic nodded seriously before his goofy demeanor kicked in once more, and he gestured her way in friendly spirits. "We'd really have been in trouble without your help!"
She smiled back, nodding.
Silver and her held a gaze…
"How'd you know we were in trouble in the first place? Someone find you?"
She held her peace… as did Silver.
"…Uh." He turned between Silver and Blaze, not understanding what was going on, but respecting the sense that they needed a moment. "Well… I should check on my friends… make sure my dimensions safe."
Blaze and Silver nodded, "Right." They never lost eye contact.
"You do that." Silver shifted himself in the air towards her and Sonic grew uncomfortable with the weird silence.
"…Right. Catch ya later!" he sped in through the middle of them and took off into a portal, which closed once he entered.
Between dimensions… they're two portals behind them…
Blaze felt the air thicken, a strange suffocation. She didn't know how to bring up what she wanted too. How?
She pulled forward towards him a bit but stopped a short distance away.
How do you tell someone you want… something you don't remember having.
"…I called to you." He finally spoke up, and the air lightened around them.
His eyes were filled with her burning light and caused them to glow and fascinate her.
"I… I heard you." Why was she so afraid? Amy said to not hold back her feelings but…
She couldn't help it.
She felt frozen… even covered in flames, she couldn't find the right balance of speech and words to form the words clearly in her mind.
She wasn't going to just speak without thinking… but Silver seemed to be taking his time as well.
Well… Between dimensions… perhaps they had all the time in the world.
"While I was trapped inside his flow, getting drained and sucked into his power… Something opened in my mind. It allowed me to see you… but… you weren't you. We were in my world… but uglier. No one smiled there." He dipped his head down suddenly, "No one… was there. Except you."
She slightly gasped, moving away from him. "What… do you suppose it was?" She suddenly burst forward, her voice thundering through the air. "What did you see!?"
Her outburst didn't surprise him.
She was surprised though.
Then his eyes glistened and his face turned sorrowful.
"Blaze…" It was like the sound of a child… "Who are you?"
She held her peace. But this time… it was because her throat squeezed and choked her into silence.
She desperately tried to swallow but couldn't.
"To me… I mean. Who are you to me." He lightly pounded a fist down to his side, wanting an answer, wanting to know what these strange feelings of familiarity are.
"…I will forever… and always be…" she felt her chill weakening, the fires of Iblis giving way before she held them back and held herself in submission only to Silver and to none else.
"Your friend."
"…"
"Your…" she almost lost it. "Partner."
Words rang in both their minds- You're my friend… right?
"Blaze…" For a split second, she wanted to believe his mind opened up, and he knew who she was.
But as he zoomed into his arms, holding her close, she knew by his next words that that hope was lost.
"I can't help it… I want to be your friend. I don't know why, but I feel desperate and lost without you. That feeling makes me feel…" She could feel his body tremble as he curled his legs up and dipped his head into the hug more fully. "Terribly… terribly alone."
She looked up, holding back her feelings before thinking about Amy's words again.
"You're…" It took everything in her being not to cry. "You're so naïve..!" she embraced him back, digging her head into the side of his face and crook of his neck.
They held each other for a moment of time before the swirling of the portals drowned out the feeling of light air around them.
They pulled apart.
"I want to see you again."
"I'll be in the Sol Dimension." She smiled.
"I'll come… I don't know how yet, but… I'll find you. I'll find you again and again! I'll get to the bottom of this… Someday… Someday I'll figure out who you are to me. And when I do… Well, I don't know that yet. Haven't thought that far, but-!" he looked down a moment but kept his arms by her side before looking up with complete determination and hope. "Let's meet again! Again, and again until I know. I know that sounds selfish but-" he looked away again.
"I want you to know." She nodded, and he seemed jarred by that and looked back up at her again. "I want to know too." she reached up to cup his face, but pulled it back, looking away and seeming pained by how much Amy was right.
She didn't understand it but… the air was lighter. She felt it. She felt… something…
Like flames burn up oxygen, she couldn't remain in this state any longer. Being consumed in such a bittersweet moment, her anguish of those blurry memories overpowered her, and she shook her head to him.
"Please, understand… I don't want to revive-" she cut herself off, before looking him dead in the eyes again, regaining some logical strength back to her faltering mentality. She had to suppress it. She had to keep her emotions at bay and in line…
She had too. She could feel Iblis squirming… finding cracks in her defenses was not an option.
"I want to create new memories with you. An even stronger bond. A new future for us to figure out what this is… together."
He slowly nodded, like a child being scolded when getting ahead of himself.
"I can see you again… right?" He was hesitant… his arms lowered as he saw her turning her head and attention towards the portals.
She smiled and let a little gust of wind escape her nose, almost mocking with a chuckle at how innocent and sweet his questioning remark was. "Of course. I know now that… no amount of fate can tear us, truly, apart."
They stared immensely into one another's eyes… as their heads drew closer.
Iblis's presence rose in her and her eyes widened, moving away and holding out a hand to him.
He felt embarrassed, shying away from their intense, split-second moment before she looked back to him.
Pain.
It haunted him.
She turned as if also regretting not being able to fully say all she wanted too, leaving the mutual feelings to linger in the air but nothing spoken as she swanned dive back into the portal.
"WAIT!" Silver couldn't hold back his feelings. He couldn't understand why she wanted the same thing he did, and yet… would pull away so fiercely like that. "Blaze!"
He wanted with every fiber of his being to dive in and grab her hand, possibly forcing her to allow him to save her from whatever was keeping her from staying in this moment. But he just couldn't. He felt strange guilt, as though he was the cause of her pain.
He wanted to understand.
He wanted to be with her.
When she disappeared into the portal, he couldn't contain his despairing grief.
"Blaze…" he began to sink into his own portal, defeated and at a loss. Just when something had sparked in him. A glow that left him feeling as though he found a missing piece to his soul… before…
We will meet again.
His spirit's lifted.
"Blaze!?" he searched but the portal was closing.
We will meet again, Silver…
Have faith.
He smiled, "I will." And allowed the portal to enclose around him, back into his own dimension…
The dimension that she saved.
Just for him. For his future's sake. And for their reunited bond to transcend time and space itself.
