Prompt:
After Shadow's failed attempt to steal the last Chaos Emerald from Eggman, the doom's day device was already underway… with only one batgirl to stop it.
"My, my… they never learn." Fluttering to a ceiling beam above the radioactive device, Rouge leaned back and arched her neck, trying to stay hidden as Eggman grabbed Shadow's limp body, laughing manically.
"I think the boss is really going to do it this time." Orbot's robotic hide chattered from his shakes of fear.
"I think-" before Cubot could answer, Rouge swooped down and chipped the machine with her boot, clicking the emerald out of it's place and then spiraling up and out of sight.
"…Or not." Cubot's thoughts didn't work as well together, or perhaps he didn't think much at all.
Eggman looked back behind him, "This is an outrage!" he whined, stomping a foot down as the machine started short-circuiting.
"Ugh… huh?" Shadow shook himself out of it, blinking his eyes open and noticing he was in the Doctor's clutches. "Hmph!" he shoved his hand away from him and hopped down, skating away before the place blew up.
"Nooo! Shadow! How did you..!? Ahh! Ohh… shucks." Eggman grabbed his two robotic companions and dived for his escape pod.
Rouge happily flew up and smiled as Eggman's little workshop burst into an explosion of flames.
"And the gem is mine~ Sorry, Eggy. But I'm not one for flashy shows of power." She teased and flew off higher into the sky.
"Not so fast, Rouge."
"Ah!"
Shadow jumped into the sky, using the boost on the end of his shoes to propel him higher, reaching for her emerald.
But Rouge had ducked a wing in, causing him to grab it to stay with her and continued to fight for the emerald.
"Ugh! And you used to be so… charming!" she spun, but he remained on.
"This isn't about me. That emerald can't-!"
"RAAAH!"
"Huh?"
Suddenly, a red blur shot across from the two, taking Shadow with him.
"Knuckles!" Rouge flapped her wings at a clear imbalance, trying to find the right rhythm to fly again as Knuckles sucker-punched Shadow off of her.
The two went toppling down… crashing hard to the ground before the two jumped and parted, getting ready to brawl.
"Heh. Don't tell me. You've suddenly got clingy…" Knuckles smirked, raising his fists up.
Shadow dusted off his shoulder before also taking a fighting stance. "This doesn't concern you.."
"That's my emerald." Knuckles retorted, "And I thought you and Rouge were friends."
"Now, now, boys… don't fight over little ol'me." Rouge landed on a branch, sitting in a lady-like manner. "What's your deal, Shadow? Don't you know you shouldn't touch a lady without her permission?"
Shadow tsk'ed. "You don't know how that emerald's been manipulated."
"Huh? You mean it's a dud?" Rouge examined her emerald, genuinely not seeing anything wrong with it before showing it off by her face.
"Maybe you're just trying to trick me." She cooed, tilting her head into it. "At least Knuckles understands~ You can't part a lady with her jewels…"
"I only knocked him off so I could have a swing at ya!" Knuckles barked back, "Besides, men don't go for old thieves!"
"Ah! Who asked you!" Rouge stuck her nose up, offended as she closed her legs tighter together and to the side, clearly growing upset by his statement. "I should teach you to speak less and woo more." She pouted, turning her head away. "Oh look, I'm Knuckles. I have 6 emeralds and a master stone but I'm still greedy for more! You're like a snobby woman without her diamonds." Rouge went back to admiring the emerald, "But I always was a fan of the greener shines~"
"Last warning." Shadow bent his knees, readying himself…
"Tsk. You want my emeralds so bad? You're gonna have to peel them from my cold, dead fist!" Knuckles flexed his hands before forming another fist, pounding them together. "Come on!"
Shadow's eyes narrowed, then he charged him.
Rouge's eyes suddenly turned from slightly annoyed and playful, to worry and love. "No! Shadow stop!" she dived down, spiraling her foot into his chest.
"Ahh!" Shadow was thrown back, but got up quickly, skidding against the dirt.
"Rouge..?" Knuckles looked a bit confused. "What gives? I had him!"
"Oh, you dote! He's got a-!" Rouge was on the ground, still holding the emerald before Shadow took out Eggman's prototype doom's day device. This one had less power, only being able to distort life for a couple of moments.
Shadow revealed it, holding it up as it began to twist reality around them.
Getting caught up in it, Rouge and Knuckles shouted out in discomfort and amazement as life drained from the small pocket of space around them.
"Rouge!" Knuckles dived to her but got frozen with the paradigm shift up in the air. "Grr…rr…rah…" he still ant-crawled his hand closer to the emerald…
"Ah… after all this time… you still care more about your precious…grr… emeralds?!" Rouge, in disappointed sadness, watched as his hand reached for the precious stone instead of her own.
"I should have known…" her eyes squinted, shifting from sorrow to rage. "You men are all the same!" she turned her head away, but Knuckles gripped her hand that held the emerald, causing her to look back.
"Chaos-!" he shouted out, "Control!"
The realm of reality shifted back, untwisting and squeezing life back into the environment.
Knuckles fell from the air to the ground next to Rouge, who embraced him and looked back to Shadow.
"Tsk." Shadow frowned but took off after Rouge. "Nothing personal." He stated as he reached for the Emerald.
"No!" Rouge cried out, "Shadow!"
"Hands off of her." Knuckles may have seen exhausted, but he was still strong enough to get that message across. The emerald in her hand grew in color and intensity, pushing Shadow away.
"What?" he was knocked against a tree. "Augh! T-…That's impossible. The Doctor said he had-…" Shadow looked positively confused but Knuckles just smiled as Rouge fondly looked back to him, worried about his condition.
"Knuckles…" she spoke out softly.
"Heh, nothing wrong with this emerald." He clutched her hand more now, but she looked down with arched brows, knowing he was really holding onto the emerald…
Her eyes looked away before he cried out again, "Chaos Control!"
The two were teleported through time and space, in a flash of green once more, to Angel Island.
"There, take your stupid rock!" Rouge let go of her grasp on the emerald, giving it fully to him as she got up and adjusted her short hair a moment. "Ugh, look at me. I'm not even worthy to wear emeralds in this state." She puffed but was really masking the fact that she wanted to give it back to him.
"Rouge… about what you said." He rose up, shaking his head a bit from the effects of Shadow's actions and then held the emerald up. "…All you really care about is the gems, right?" the emerald hovered up, gracefully flying back to the Master Emerald and the Chaos Emeralds several pillars that were placed around it.
"…Yeah, so?" she slightly lied, not making eye contact with him.
"Then follow me." He shifted his form and muttered something under his breath, taking large steps in a direction she wasn't used to seeing him travel down.
"…Doesn't that path just lead to a dead end?" she was curious, but she was still upset. "Geez! Hmph… better be worth a lady's time…" she pretended to follow him in spite, but in all honestly, she just wanted to spend more time with the blockhead…
Coming up to the dead end, a large cliff stood between them and the outer rim of the floating Angel Isalnd.
"Now what, red?" she folded her arms, unamused. "Still hoping to swipe any more jewels off my thieving hands..?"
"Quit squawkin' and just let me show you!" he closed his eyes, growing upset by her sass and started pulling rocks out from the cliff. "My ancestors used to rule half the known world, you know!" he cried out, punching the wall a few times as Rouge looked bored.
"Way to rub it in, Caesar. I'll have a salad with that manifest destiny." She rolled her eyes but looked starstruck when something shiny and glistening came from a hole Knuckles had unearthed.
"There, bat girl." Knuckles huffed and puffed, moving aside as she admired his strength and physique a moment. With each breath, his muscles showed through a little more, and she suddenly saw that dashing, rough and rugged look she loved so much in him.
"Hmph. If you're trying to impress me with your brutish workout sessions, I'm not interested in petty and desperate." She tried to keep her act going, but something pulled her into that cave…
"…Go on." He wiped some spit from his mouth, looking back to her. "You can have something. But only one, alright? This cave is getting sealed and I'll move it again if you even think about stealing from me again!"
"…Wait, what are you..?" Rouge stepped forward, reaching out for him but he just turned his head to the cave again.
"You've helped me and Sonic in the past… you're not just an annoying thief anymore. You're a friend." He smiled, closing his eyes and looking down again. "If you really think I only care about my duty, and not my friends, you're mistaking me for who I used to be. That's when I kinda realized… heh." He rubbed his glove under his nose, smirking. "That you probably think I still see you as a common rogue too. True, I used to hate the sight of ya. But now… well, times have changed, and so have I." he opened one eye and looked back to her, a charming look in it's sparkle. "Go on. My treat."
"You're serious…" Rouge blinked, but her excitement got the better of her. "Echidna treasures… Ohhh~ You better not be pulling my leg here, Knuckle-boy!" she almost sang the words as she darted into the cave, flying fast and seeing the multitude of…
She spun around, amazed at the sparkling and glittering jewels all unmined and shining above her head. "But… there not…" she was expecting gold and trinkets,… "Now, you don't expect me to dirty my nails and dig them out of there, do you?" she twiddled her fingers up by her face as he came in after her.
"Heh, what? Can't cut a diamond the way you like them, Rouge?" he played too, and then folded his arms with another kind smile, looking up to cave's walls. "…Which one do ya fancy?"
"…You really mean it, don't you." She dropped her hand. "You're really offering me one of these exquisite beauties..? All in a show of comradery?"
"Hurry up and decide already." He huffed with a blush, seeming to like her astonishment. "I'm a nice guy, you know. Typical you never thought I'd be doing something so niffy for ya, huh? Like sharing my people's treasure and all." He raised an eyebrow to her. "Yeah… times certainly have changed… but you haven't Rouge. Not a thing. Maybe a little tender around the edges now, but your bleeding heart is still black as night. Haha! Or am I just kidding?" he laughed.
She wanted to just pounce him, really make him sweat in nerves as she thanked him profusely and teased him a little bit… it would certainly blow his mittens off, but she held it in with a simple, sweet smile.
"My~ I'm honestly smitten." She placed a hand at her heart. "You really don't know me… do you?"
"Huh?" He looked back at her.
She batted her eyes, "Any gem I choose?"
"Yeah… what are you getting at here..?" He ducked his head again, not sure what her angle was…
"…Perfect. I choose you." She scooted up to him and placed her hands on his chest, cuddling up. "I'd wear you night and day~ Polish you up a bit and put you on for show-and-tell." She winked.
"Urk!?" His muzzled flushed but he just angrily stomped his foot down, moving his arms back and away from her. "Quit messing around, Rouge! J-Just pick a stone!"
"That one. Above your head." She lifted a finger to it.
"Huh? That one… heh. The shiniest one. I don't care what you say, you've still got an eye for treasure." He smirked up it, twinkling as it did while he gently moved Rouge away. "Alright, this will only take a second." He gruffed up the wall, scaling it and digging his knuckles in as he made his way to excavate the one picked out.
"Hmm-hmm… how dense can you get?" she smiled under her wicked gaze… looking to the side where a pile of shards were already harvested.
"Rah! Hah! Ya-ha! This one's just the right size." He looked proud of himself as he pulled the dark purple gem out, seeing its color brighten when it hit the light.
"Heh… beautiful." He admired it, having it radiate in his hands before he looked around. "Alright, Rouge. This is your-… Rouge?"
He looked around.
"AH! The Emeralds!" he lost his hold on the ceiling and fell down, racing out. "Why you-! Thief! Thiiieefff!" he stomped and thumped his feet back and forth in a tissy fit towards the Master Emerald's altar…
But Rouge had gathered only the shards that were already pulled from the site, holding them delicately in her arms as she hid behind some boulders.
When he was gone, she lovingly blew him a kiss, and looked at her precious loot…
"How could he pull me in there and ask for me to take only one..? That's like asking a mother to pick a favorite… isn't that right, my beauties?" she flew up to the sky, talking to herself and her new jewelry potentials before taking off from Angel Island.
Later that day, as the sun set, Knuckles held up the purple stone she had picked—although a distraction—and admired it again with the lights from the fading sun…
"Hmph… she may be a nuisance… but, heh." He smirked fondly towards the stone. "She still has an eye… for what's of greater worth." He turned the pretty gemstone a little left and then a little right. His eyes softened on it and then he placed it on his chest, yawning.
He put his hands behind his head and started snoring in a matter of seconds.
A shadow of wings suddenly hung from either side of him, and a doting pair of eyes admired the stone as well… reaching down to stroke his chest a moment, moving her fingers seductively up towards the gem, and then walking it up to a standing position.
She took the gem and kissed his forehead, fluttering her wings in a silent goodbye and goodnight before taking off to loot more of his ancestors cave~3
As her motto goes~ A thief first, lover later~
