"Okay! Have a good one!" Amy waved, watching as her friends headed home and smiling widely.
…She leaned her body against the side of the doorframe, swaying ever so slightly…
They looked back and peppily she waved again but the smile grew more strained and unnatural.
"Leave already…" she spoke through her smile, breathing the annoyance out as she waved harder.
They continued on, and she lifted her foot up as though still trying to remain cute, but still coming off unnatural.
Finally, they were over the hill of the road, and she slammed the door.
"I thought they'd never leave!" she admitted, rushing down the stairs to her basement, pepping her hair on the way down before setting some candle light and sitting down.
"Okay, you can do this." She went through her drills. "Hi. Oh, me? Sure! Sounds fun! Again? Well, if you insist. Listen, this night's been grand but I need to tell you something. Alone. Like without the others. Don't fuss~ I insist~" She waltzed through her moments as though rushing through a monologue she had studied and memorized like her favorite movie lines.
Finally, she took a deep breath, closing her eyes.
"…Okay…" she told herself again.
Then opened them.
In front of her, leaning like a lifeless, stuffed animal was her handmade Sonic doll.
Its head dipped to the side and its arms limped against the sides of the table it was up against.
For a basement, Amy sure had a lot of stuff. It was as though this wasn't her first choice as a home, showing all the fancier furniture downstairs. That, or who would display their nice things with such rambunctious friends?
"…Sonic." She felt her mouth grow dry and wish she had brought some juice or water down with her. Her eyes bent back as the fantasy opened up. The doll was suddenly a handsomely portrayed, overly dream-a-tized Sonic. Smelling a flower and wearing a fancy half-tux, looking off over a balcony before turning back to her, his eyebrow raised in a flirty but intrigued manner.
She giggled as her shoulders rose up and she melted slightly in her stance, her mouth swiggling into a waved look of joy at her imagination.
She had to snap herself out of it, she knew she'd be down here all night if she didn't pull herself together.
"Hoo… Okay, so here's the thing." She clapped her hands together.
"I…" she looked at the doll.
The sudden realization that was wasn't in her perfect setting spooked her slightly, such was the reality of how compelling her dream-world really was.
To her it was so vivid. The doll helped her picture him laying down and ignoring her for a moment, but she pictured a new setting… trying to be more realistic for the real deal.
Now, Sonic was lounging, one hand raised over the table and his mouth yawning, but then laughing as though thinking of some funny joke.
She wanted him in a good mood… he had to be in a good mood…
This wouldn't work unless he was…
"Sonic… I've known you for several years now. And I have to admit I've been lying to myself if I said… if I admitted… that I…" she looked down, imagining now that he had lifted his half sunken head from his humorous thoughts and finally fixated his brilliant green eyes onto her increasingly nervous frame.
Her fingers fiddled with one another, keeping her mind and eyes busy on multitasking while her brain tried to scramble the script back together again.
"Ugh, why do I get so nervous about this!?" she lifted her head up to the ceiling of the basement, seeing how truly dusty she had let the place get.
"Hmm…" her mouth pushed up, as though thinking of a scheduled time to make things right down here…
No, no.
She shook her head.
Now was not the time to think about cleaning.
She smacked the sides of her hands against her blushing cheeks and refocused her determined little emerald eyes back at the doll she had created for this very task.
"I don't want to be friends anymore."
She pictured his shock expression, dramatized his "What did I do!? Tell me where I went wrong! Don't go!" that made her smile a little, before she too, began to play along with her fantasies.
"No, no. Not like that, silly." She lifted her head haughtily into the air, playing coy a moment as she fanned his desperate being away from her, his arms out and ready to plead for her again and again.
"Hehe~" she flushed a little more, thinking that if he ever was like that, she might just die.
"I lll…" she slurred, as the doll remained still and the vision faded into a sharp cut back to reality.
She leaned forward, crossing her legs Indian-style and gripping them tightly with her hands.
"I lllooovv…" she could feel it. The bubbling of excitement. The bursting of chaotic fireworks that dared her adrenaline to rush up and fuel her to him. "I love-" she choked, having a piece of dust fly in her mouth as she started a coughing fit.
She pounded her chest, hacking it up and wiping her mouth.
She looked annoyed, "Let's start that over." She got up. "Hi. Oh, me? Sure! Sounds fun! Again? Well, if you insist. Listen- OHHH!" she finally stopped her foot down, tired of nights upon nights of endless circles trying to get the 'act' done right.
What if she just… spoke from her heart? In the moment? While the feelings flamed and her heart raced?
Would it really be that bad if she slipped up? Did it have to be perfect?
"I like you a lot, okay!?" she flung herself around, her face twisting into a mess of emotion. "I … really, really… wholeheartedly… body and soul,… my very hopeless romantic spirit cries out how much it loves you!" she paused…
Her arms had moved everywhere… it must have looked awful.
She turned to a dusty mirror.
Her face looked sweaty and worn… that was ugly.
She pushed her lips together, crushing her fists into a tight balled punch as it wanted to swing so hard into the stupid mirror!
Into her embarrassed… red… face…
"Ugh!" she fell to the ground, sobbing.
"It's too much!" she cried out, "I know! I love you too much! I get it! I'm awful! I'm a terrible being! I'm disgraceful! I'm so unladylike and I shouldn't feel this way about you, but I do! It's disgusting and I do!"
She wiped her eyes a billion times, repeating the same swiping and scraping moment to try and get every last drop out.
…Let the glass empty…
Let this feeling pass…
By tomorrow, she could stand being around him and letting all the feelings pile up again…
And by that night, she could pour it all out in front of her Sonic doll. The replacement. The entity that soaked up her immense love and let it out in secret so she would never have to be exposed to embarrassment.
She looked back up at the Sonic doll, his head still resting down by his shoulder.
"…Why do I need you so much…" she crawled toward it. "…Why… Why do I need to do this..? Why do I need to love you… so much…" she let herself fall onto his chest, a fluffy, spinned with fine thread chest that caught her emotions and braced her head around its soft cushiony surface.
She closed her eyes, letting the tears be caught and absorbed by its mass. The Sonic doll's head slightly tipped at the new found gravity and hung over hers, as though unable to hold her, but still watching the emotions play out. It was his job to observe and remain silent.
"I love you… Sonic The Hedgehog… but I won't show it if you don't want me too."
It was a painful line. So painful in fact, that the blinking red button on the shoulder that the Sonic doll had hidden suddenly flicked off.
The three men and Sticks stood silent as they stared at the footage…
Sticks hand on the button that shut it off, Tails's mouth open, Knuckles's eyes blinking slowly, and Sonic… For the first time in his life… unable to move.
"…I honestly thought this was just gonna get weird." Sticks admitted. "When I told you guys about the Sonic scarecrow, I thought it was unhealthy for her to have it and we should intervene but this…"
"…We shouldn't have done this." Tails felt his entire insides crush into each other like a massive dark hole, sucking himself into the guilt and betrayal at watching such an intimate moment of someone's weakness moment reveal itself in the dark of deception.
He felt so awful, he thought he might throw-up.
Knuckles stepped back, looking down. "Oh Amy… Doesn't she know that's not Sonic?"
No one laughed.
"Sonic… what should we-?" Tails, finding himself loss at what to do now, turned only to see that Sonic had mysteriously vanished.
"…Sonic?"
The next day, Amy was fine.
F.I.N.E. As in, Freakin' messed up—to put it politely—Insecure, Neurotic, and Emotional… but somehow, still keeping it all together and living on happily with her life.
Then Eggman attacked.
Then they got Meh Burger.
And everyone seemed to have a strained smile… but Amy couldn't tell. She had worn one for so long, she couldn't tell a fake to a real one anymore.
But nonetheless, she loved to smile. She loved to hang out with her friends. She loved to be with Sonic, fighting Eggman, solving mysteries, and protecting good people in their good little lives and having nice little Meh Burgers with their little, funny friend group.
Amy wondered into her home, slipping her shoes off and keeping the socks on. She closed the door slowly… and felt a heaviness as she descended the stairs down, down… down to her little torture chamber where a silent doll sat and waited for another powerful love confession that would drain her enough to function the next day.
Maybe she would hug it tonight. Maybe there would be a happy ending tonight? Maybe she wouldn't take it so seriously as before…
"Hi…. Oh? Me? You sure..? Sounds fun… Again, huh? Well,… I suppose… if you insist." She kicked some fallen cup that had made its way off from it's storage box piled somewhere above the others… She walked like she was half asleep, not having the energy for this tonight, but thinking a new strategy might come in handy. "Listen,… this night's been grand but,…" she felt her body insisting it couldn't handle much more of this. Her heart waned… so she hugged herself and sighed, stopping her advancement towards the Sonic Doll.
His head was dipped half into the shadows… covering his button eyes and only revealing his limp body against the table.
She stared at it, her eyes shifting left and right, blinded by her own internal conflict.
No daydreams tonight.
No balcony view… or realistic rendering of just… sitting down together and chillaxing.
"I need to tell you something." She looked miserable. She didn't need to look in the mirror for it to mock her again. She didn't even dare look. It won't pain her again. Her weakened being at falling so hard into an emotion it forces her to confess every night… just to be sane the next morning.
But she couldn't stop it. She wanted to tell the real Sonic so badly. And at the same time… wanted to avoid it at all cost.
"Alone… Like…" she moved towards it, standing just in front of it with one arm falling loose from her and dangling down, her leg lifting slightly forward and wobbling on her toes as though acting her age now. A young girl… a young girl in love and not knowing how to deal with it.
"Don't fuss, okay?" she felt herself tearing up, and kicked lightly against the doll's leg.
It felt more like a shoe this time… but she didn't pay much mind to it.
"Heh, I insist..!" she flopped her arms out, making fun of it all now. Coping with it…
Coping with the red that still, somehow, found its way in creeping over her cheeks and keeping her speaking.
"I, um…" she let her arms flop to her sides in cute, repeated moments. "I guess I'm a hopeless romantic… and I guess that no matter how many times I confess to a stupid doll, in a stupid basement," she turned back to it, but never really looked at it.
"I will always feel awful about it." She finally turned to the side, as though not wanting to face the doll anymore. "You know… I've never thought about what you'd say. Imagine that? Me. Amy Rose. Never picturing what you would say… how you would confess. Isn't that funny? I think you should. I think, that after all the times I've confessed to you, you should confess to me."
She kicked the foot again, a little harder this time.
But it didn't flop over…
"I think you should just look at yourself in the mirror." Her eyes narrowed.
She kicked the foot again.
"I think you should just confess to me..!" she felt a heat in her cheeks… not like before…
She kicked the doll's foot again.
"I think you should be the one who's hopelessly in love with me and can't contain it like a normal creature!" she ran to all the furniture, stacked nicely around, and grabbed at the tarp, ripping it off. "I think you should have a doll! An Amy Doll! That you practice talking to at night!" she banged against the chairs, the desks, the books as she pushed them against the wall and heard the backboard break a little bit.
"I think you… you should never know what that's like." She finally calmed down from her wild motions… hunching over and letting her arms dangle as she slowly looked at what she had done.
It spooked her a bit… but not for long, she just regretted the damages.
She wondered over the mirror.
"I think you should own a mirror…" she stated, and rubbed a lazy hand over it, rubbing off the dust that blurred her features.
She looked at the only clear spot… her eyes…
"I don't… I don't want to say it tonight." She hit the mirror, but it was light. It was as though all her energy was oozing out all wrong… it wasn't freeing, like in the beginning. It wasn't 'a fantastic idea!' that she had excitedly thought of before.
"It's not you." She turned back to the doll. "If you were Sonic… I would walk right up and say-" she wandered over, finally holding her head up high, and finally saying what she had attempted to do in better spirits for many… dark and lonely years…
"Hey, Sonic." She nodded her head, "I like you." She let it out. "I think you're really cool." Suddenly, a genuine smile started coming back on her face as she thought of Sonic. Just Sonic.
No fancy tux. No lazy… adorable bum… sitting with her at her house.
It was Sonic.
Out, in the open somewhere. Right after a run.
He was just cooling off, sitting down a moment to rest.
Her whole countenance suddenly softened, her eyes growing glossy as she looked inside her mind.
It was… perfect.
Strangely,… this was the missing piece all along.
She found herself chuckling, and covered her mouth. "I really like you… okay?"
The doll's head looked up, moving slowly at first, and its mouth opening slightly.
She could really see it now… the doll becoming the man.
"…I'm sorry it's taken me so long to say it… I was so afraid… afraid of how'd you see me. How'd you take it."
The doll stood up on its legs, and she laughed again, moving back to allow the pretend to consume her.
"I love you though… I hope that's okay. Cause I really love loving you… I can't hide it all the time, but I do my best. I hope my best is okay…"
Suddenly, the doll moved forward.
That's when she started to look out of her dream, trying to see the doll just sitting there going limp again.
Except, the Sonic doll wasn't going back to just sitting.
It stepped forward again, arms open.
"…What the-?" she was taken aback as the doll embraced her… and then…
"I'm sorry I couldn't say it first… Amy."
Her eyes widened.
"…Sonic…?"
