Amy sighed.
She just had a huge argument with Sonic. Mostly about how he was treating her like a child, and that she wanted to be treated more like an adult.
She read in some magazine that men like assertive girls, and that by stating her position, it would move her man to take action.
She was starting to question that article, though at the time, it sounded so convincing!
She waved for a taxi, but when the rain hit, she saw no further cabs and just ducked her head down, walking back home with soggy feet.
As she walked miserably along the rode, she suddenly saw some headlights, and turned, trying to hitchhike.
The car sped by her, flinging water in her face.
She looked so done with life, but her thumb remained raised, as another car sped by but missed the puddle… then, reversed and came slowly back.
In the dark, she couldn't see who it was, but pushed her quills back and smiled.
The shadow wore sunglasses, making it even harder to see them.
'Who wears sunglasses in the middle of the night!?' she thought to herself, and backed slightly away from the car.
"Want a ride?"
Her ears picked up on a familiar ring in his voice.
"…Sonic?"
He rolled down the window more, showing his car could have a roof for weather conditions.
He clicked up the door locked and looked at her like she was at his mercy.
She fibbed a smile.
"…Get in." he looked like it was more of a 'you've got nothing worse to do.'.
She took a long sigh, still regretting their conversation ever happening, and opened the door.
It was probably the longest most awkwardest car ride she ever had.
She just held her fingers down and intertwined them, trying not to look at him as they drove by several lights.
When she did get the courage to peek, Sonic was leaning an elbow against the car door, his hand letting his head lean against it, and his eyes looking slightly tried and bored.
She frowned a minute, arching her brows as she wondered if she had hurt him or not with her previous actions…
She looked down, 'of course he was upset! Would he be this silent if he wasn't!?'
Then again,… she thought about how Sonic was usually introverted, if not around many of his closest friends, or even Eggman.
Maybe he was just… in his head?
She turned back to him, but this time, admired how good he looked in a car…
Then his eyes darted to her.
She freaked out, jolting in her seat like electricity and peered out the window again, blushing in her nerves.
"…You cold or somethin'?" Sonic raised an eyebrow, but his tone didn't sound mad…
"I-I'm just…" she looked down, then up, then down.
Sonic looked a little oddly to her, as if something wasn't quite right to him. "Huh? Having a hard time deciding?"
"N-no!" Amy shook a hand up, before face-palming herself. "Sorry, i'm just cold. Yes. Yes, I'm cold." she was… but…
He leaned forward, "Ooookay." he clicked the heat on, and leaned back.
'Ahhhh, I'm being a total dweeb!' Amy scolded herself, having her hands up over her face as she bent down.
Sonic looked down at her, worried.
'I need to say something to break this tension! Just tell him your sorry!'
She leaned her head up, inhaling a big breath to let everything out… before…
"I honestly didn't know you were feeling that way."
Amy's mouth dropped from it's open frame, and she slowly turned to Sonic, in a bit of surprise that he was starting a conversation.
He kept his eyes glued to the road… and she realized that she misunderstood his expression.
It wasn't tried or bored at all… he was probably just as torn up about what happened as she was.
He darted his eyes to the mirrors real quick, before making a turn.
She braced… but found he was actually driving just a little over moderately… strange…
She raised an eyebrow.
He was usually such a daredevil at the wheel…
'Oh no! I really did it! I made him sad!' she freaked out, never having seen Sonic so… depressed! She started imagining him wearing black and listening to loud, sad music and hugging a pillow.
She almost cried at the image, before he spoke again and her attention was directed right back at him.
"If I had known that you thought I was treating you differently from everybody, I would have tried not too." he looked away. "…Sorry about that."
She was so touched.
"Sonic…" her heart filled with love for him.
"I-.. F-forget everything I've said Sonic! It was wrong of me to make you feel that way, and I was way out of line! I… I don't deserve this! WHAAAAHHAAAHAA.." she started to cry dramatically, as Sonic freaked out and flinched, swerving the car slightly in the process, and having to re-grip the wheel, sighing at not having skidded off the road.
That could have been dangerous.
He sighed, "Hoo…" he then turned to Amy. "You've been awful jumpy lately too. Acting different and all. Is that you trying to act more mature?" he blinked his eyes, not sure if he was right or not.
She suddenly stopped crying, and blinked as well.
She slowly turned her head to him, "You noticed that? Ah!" she covered her mouth, not meaning to have spoken her thoughts aloud.
He chuckled, seeing she had calmed down by the sentiment and started focusing on driving again.
"It wasn't hard to see the new pumps."
She blushed, looking down at her feet.
"I just don't get it… how can you even walk in those?" he laughed, as Amy puffed up a cheek and pouted.
"They were on sale." she defended, before sighing and giggling too. "But you're right. I guess I went overboard trying to 'assert' myself as a woman." Amy looked away, a little embarrassed, but kept a pleasant smile on her face. "I'm sorry. You've really gotten the blunt of that endeavor.."
Sonic smiled, "You're trying to 'assert' your womanhood?" he cocked a eyebrow up, and darted his eyes quickly to her before back to the road, then 'pfft'd a moment.
She twitched in fury.
"What was that about?" she angrily asked, ducking her head down to control her anger.
"It's just… I didn't realize girls had to 'assert' it. I just thought you were one." he kid, as Amy looked up, and towards him.
"Wait… you mean you've always seen me as a lady?"
"Lady sounds younger, so I'll go with that." he winked her way, smiling charmingly.
"I have to admit. You don't necessarily strike me as an older woman,.. and quite frankly, I think lady suits you better." he turned again, but still at a good speed.
"I think you should just start being the person you want to be. Don't step up just for my sake."
"…You… you like younger women?"
He slammed his foot on the break.
She zoomed forward as he reached a hand out, not having seat belts for two, and pushed her back in her seat.
He looked upset.
"I never said that!" he sternly pointed a finger towards her. "Don't go around saying weird things like that, alright? I like girls. I like ladies. Whatever floats your boat. But don't be tellin' people I like 'younger' or 'older' women. That's just weird." he shook his head, trying to make sure she understood, and then started up the car again.
Amy had flatten herself against the back seat, slightly terrified at his reaction, before nodding quickly and calming down again.
She brushed her hair down with her fingers, before noticing something…
"It… It sure is taking a while to get there…" she looked out at the dark world, not really being able to see anything but a few lights…
"Oh, I've passed your house a few times now." Sonic admitted, looking in the rear view mirror.
Her quills stood on end, "WHAT!?" she turned back to him, "W-… why haven't you stopped?!"
Sonic shrugged, being causal. "I wanted to ride with you. Hoped to find out what was troubling you. It worked, didn't it?"
She almost felt her heart brim over with love when he said that.
"You…" she placed her hands up against her body, holding them together, deeply moved. "You circled around… just to talk with me?"
"I knew something was troubling you. I figured. Eh. This could be a good chance to learn what was up."
He took a chance to peek over at her, and then flipped out.
Her eyes were sparkling very wide and big, looking very admiringly towards Sonic.
"Woah! Put those eyes back to normal!" he blurted out, before stopping at her house.
She saw at the corner of her ducked head the car lock flip up, and Sonic picked a foot up and placed it on his knee, letting it rest.
He shrugged again, letting his arms follow the action. "I don't know what to say, Amy. I'll try and be more sensitive about you wanting to grow up and all."
Her eyes were hidden in shadows.
He frowned, before looking up and trying to think of something to say.
"…Want to ride around a little more?"
She rose her head, beaming.
"Oh, Sonic!~"
"W-woah!" his eyes widened, as she leaped towards him… in his car… in the dark… at night.
"Amy! Wait! Th-This looks bad! Amy! Stay on your side! WHAaa!"
The car jostled a bit left and right, as silhouettes danced inside it, the window wipers still on their casual beat.
