Callie's POV
"We're here," Devin said. "I still don't understand why we had to bring both cars," Rachel asked while Devin put his car in park. "In case one of us decides to be an idiot and leave the party early," he explained. "I WAS SICK! You expect me to stay at a party while I'm sick," she argued. "Whatever, if you two need the car, just ask."
We all get out the car and head inside, turns out it wasn't just any party it was a rave. Devin guided us to a group of people, that were sitting in a circle. "This my buddy Wyatt," he told me as he point to a boy with long hair. "Hey," Wyatt said and gave a small smile. A gave him one back out of politeness. "This is his ex, Talia." He looked at the girl who looked like she had a few too many drinks already. "Anyways, go have fun, and find me if you need something. Andrew, Sam and Faith are somewhere around here too." He then walked off to talk to a few of his buddies.
I began walking around not really knowing what to do, until I bumped into this drunk girl. "Woah, here. w...watch where you going," The girl slurred her words. She looked around my age. "I think you should head home, you've had too much to drink. Who's your ride?" I asked, hoping she didn't just come here alone. She was too drunk and I couldn't just leave her here. "T...Talia." She said with a slur as she swayed.
I grabbed her armed to help her balance and begin to walk back towards the group of I was introduced to. I was hoping it wasn't the same Talia I had met earlier but when we got there, Talia asked with a little slur, "You know her?" "No," the said, then giggled. "She your ride?" I asked the girl. However Talia butted in," Of course I know how to drive. Let's go Mari." "You're drunk." I stated. "I only took a few drinks," she said as if it made it any better. "You still shouldn't drive." "Yeah, you shouldn't drive. Callie will drive you." A voice from behind me said. I turn around to see Devin. I shoot him a confused look. I have no idea why he just said that without even asking me. Of course she can't drive but I was going to ask one of their friends if they would drive them home. I barely know them and Devin doesn't know if I can drive. "No way am I letting her drive my mom's car." Talia said with a bit of anger in her voice. "Don't worry, she'll drive my car. Then tomorrow you can could back to pick it up." He assure her. "Oh ok let's go then, I think Mari is tired." She was right, the girl named Mari was by now was leaning almost all her weight on me and her eyes struggled to stay open. I wanted to protest and ask why he didn't he drive them, but I didn't know him too well, nor did I know how much these two girls knew about him. Plus it was the perfect excuse to leave the party. Devin gave me his keys and said," We'll talk later." I gave him a nod then led Talia and practically carried Mari to the car
Once we got there, Talia helped me put Mari in the back seat. We had to lay her down, since she couldn't even seat without tipping over. I hopped in the driver's seat and Talia sat in the passenger seat. I looked over and asked her, "Where does she live?" She looked at me think, as if trying to remember. It now occurred to me that I should have probably asked Devin where they lived but to be honest I prefer to deal with these two over him. Something about him made me uneasy, I think whether it was the comment he made, or the fact that he mostly hung out with teens rather than people his age.
"Around here, I think it was down the street to the left. No to the right?..." She asked. I looked at her puzzled, how was she planning to take the girl back, if she didn't even know where she lived. "Sorry, Brandon, her brother is my boyfriend and he usually drives his siblings but he had a dinner with his dad." She explained. "Do you know your address?" I asked her, at this point I just wanted to at least drop ne of them off and then I would figure out the ither one afterwards. "Yeah, here I'll put it on my map." She does and hands me her phone. I check it out and begin to drive, it wasn't that far, and she said that Mari lived nearby so if I couldn't find the girl's house, I could just drop her off with Talia.
When we arrived at her house, she got out and told me," Mariana's moms are probably still awake. You should call them." Then closed the door and headed to her house. Moms? What about her father? Wait her real name is Mariana, that makes surprising sense. I take a look at Mari ana in the backseat, she is still asleep. I grab her purse and take out her phone. Lucky me she doesn't have a password, I search through her contacts. I see 'Mom' but right under I see 'Momma'. Does she actually have two moms? Weird, never met someone with two moms. I go to the contact 'Mom' and hit the call button.
It rings and rings then a woman answers, "Hey, Is everything ok?" Oh, I just realized I never actually figured out what to say before hand. I decide to confirm that I called the right person. "Hi, is this Mariana's mom?" "Yes, who is this? Is she ok?" I didn't know how to answer, I didn't really want to get this girl in trouble but her mother sounded genuinely concerned. "Yea, she ok. She's asleep...but I don't know where she to drop her off." Great, I sound really nerves. I'm not even sure she'll actually believe me. "What happened to Talia?" She asked. "She couldn't drive her." I tell her not really wanting to rat either of them out but I'm not sure I'll be able to keep the secret once she sees her daughter. I also don't want to break the news through the phone, I mean she wouldn't believe me after all. I heard the woman sigh over the phone then talk to another woman about what I told her. "Are you girls still at the party?" "No, we're in the car." I think she was waiting for an explanation because she didn't say anything. "I didn't want to leave her alone at the party, she already looked very tired." I tried to avoiding telling her that her daughter was drunk. "Ok" I could tell she already knew there was more to the story just by the way she said that. "I'll send the address, come drop her off." I can tell she was debating if she should send it but she does anyway. "Ok, I'll be there in a few minutes." "Ok" Then I hung up, and drove to the house.
On the drive there I think of how I ended up in this situation. She drunk teen girls, Devin offering me up without asking me. His invitation, his offer of finding Jude for me. Something's off about him, why would he insist for me to go to the party then let me leave. I have to be careful around him.
By the time I pull myself out of my thoughts, I had arrived at Mariana's house. It was one of the nicest house I've seen. I park in front of the house and turn off the lights and engine. I got out and opened the back door to wake up Mariana. "Hey. We're at your house." I whispered not wanting her head to hurt, that is if she still wasn't too drunk. I was hoping that by now she at least wasn't too drunk. However when she woke up she sat up and giggled. Great, she's still too drunk. I was helping her out when I heard the front door of the house open and close. At this point Mariana was out of the car and her weight was mostly on me. I turned around to see two woman practically jogging towards us. For a second I thought I had the wrong house from the appearance of the women. One was African American with brown curly hair and the other Caucasian with blonde hair. I felt Mariana pull slightly away from me and I turned just in time to see her throw up.
I still held on to her with arm and with my free hand I held her hair out of the way. The curly haired woman was rubbing her back and the blonde held her up from the other side. "Let's get her inside," the blonde woman said, looking at me. From the looks of it she wanted to talk to me. I already know she wanted to know what happened. After Mariana stopped vomiting we took her inside, that was when the blonde asked me to sit in their living room until they came back down. So I did I sat on their couch and waited for them to come downstairs.
I look around, it's a very nice house. I can tell these people care about the way the house is kept, most of the homes I've been in are pretty messy and run down. This house feels homey, like it's a home, just not my home.
I am snapped out of my thoughts by the sound walking, it was coming from the stairs. The women then appeared in the doorway. "We owe you a thank you, for bringing her home." The curly haired woman said. I simply gave them a small smile and nod, then I began to stand up but the woman continued in a hurry. "My name is Lena and this is my partner Stef. It's nice to meet you." When she pointed at the woman with blonde hair the woman gave me a warm smile, weird. I can tell they were waiting for me to introduce myself, as Lena sat down across from me and Stef leaned against the doorframe. "I'm Callie," as soon as I said my named Lena looked confused and Stef looked suspicious. All I said was my name and they're already thinking I'm a nut case. "How old are you?" Stef asked. Lena shot her a look but she ignored it. "Old enough to drive," I said not wanting for then to know my real age. "How'd you get those bruises?" She asked, clearly not backing down. In the mist of looking for Jude and taking the girls home I completely forgot about the bruises on my face that were caused by some girls in juvie. I can't just straight up tell them, they might call the cops on me. However I can tell Stef isn't going to just back down. Still I can't back down either. "I fell" Was the only thing I can think to come up with at the moment. "Must've been a pretty hard fall." She said looking me straight in the eyes, I maintained eye contact when Lena yelled. "STEF." All I said was, "I guess so." At this point it was a battle. She knew I was lying and still pressed for answers but I wasn't giving up so easily.
"Why don't you stay the night and head out tomorrow morning." Lena jumped in trying to break the tension. It worked because now Stef and I looked at her like she had lost her mind. "WHAT?" Stef and I practically yelled at the same time, then looked at each other for a second then turned our attention back to Lena. "It's already dark out, I'm sure your parents would understand." She explained. "I can't stay, I borrowed the car from a friend." I tell her. "Well it's dark out, for your safety it's best to stay here. Then leave in the morning." I guess what Lena was saying may sense to Stef because she then pilled on. "Just let your parents and your friend know you'll be staying here." Stef stated. "I don't have a phone," I tell them hoping that would let them I was serious, but this just made them confused. "What teenager doesn't have a phone?" Stef asked surprised. 'A foster kid' I said to myself but then I realized they were assuming I was a teenager without knowing my age. "I never said I was a teenager." I said hoping they would get tied and let me leave. At this point I'm pretty sure they were aware of what I was attempting to do because they stayed quiet. Stef gave me the a 'seriously' face. She was about to say something when we all heard the door open.
Stef looked at the person and asked, "Where have you been?" No answer, whoever it was clearly didn't want to respond. "Come in here, we have to talk about this bud." Lena said as if she knew who it was, however she hadn't even seen him. As I heard the footsteps get closer I was now wondering how many people lived here. It was a pretty large house and I'm guessing it had a few bedrooms. As the person steps into the room I see who it is, he stops as so as we lock eyes. I see tears flowing down his face. I can see from the corner of my eyes Stef and Lena just watching in confusion, but we don't break eye contact. I slowly get up and say his name.
