Author Note: Hey, everyone. It's been a while. About a month ago my grandfather took a turn for the worse and he passed away. I was busy with the funeral and after I was suffering from anxiety and depression. Worse than normal. So, I wasn't able to write. I'm still a little sluggish, but I'm slowly getting things put back together. I'll do my best to get back to a normal update schedule. Thanks for sticking with me. Enjoy the new chapter!
Chapter 74:
Dreams
Seto couldn't sleep that night. The make out scene kept playing over and over in his head. He finally gave up trying and ended up working to keep his mind off it. The next day, when he went to pick up Ana as usual, he felt exhausted. Ana came out of her house, took one look at him, and frowned.
"Are you alright?" She asked, concerned.
"Fine."
She sighed and said, "You look tired."
Seto didn't answer and grumbled under his breath. He started walking and said nothing to her. Ana followed. As they walked, she eyed him.
"Did you sleep?"
Seto grumbled. "No."
"Amin-chan, were you working all night again?"
"Out of necessity, and before you say anything, it's your fault." He snapped. I really need a nap.
She looked surprised. "My fault? What did I do?"
He couldn't bring himself to answer and could feel the back of his neck getting warm. Ana blushed. He assumed she figured it out. They were silent for a moment before Ana snorted while holding back a laugh.
"What's so funny?" He got the feeling she was laughing at him.
"Nothing."
"Ana. I haven't slept for almost 36 hours. I'm easily annoyed right now. What's so funny?" He gritted his teeth.
Ana just chuckled. "I was just thinking that you've changed a bit since I first met you."
Seto stopped walking and glared at her. "No, I haven't. I haven't changed at all."
She turned to him and gave him a half smile. "Before you didn't admit to needing sleep."
"Sleep is pragmatic and a medical necessity. I always needed it. I just ignored it."
Ana rolled her eyes. "You eat better now."
"That was because it was in the contract and I got used to making my own meals, plus it helped me work better. Again pragmatic. I wouldn't really call that a change."
"You say sorry when you realize you've done something wrong."
Seto paused at this. "Only to you! And I hate it."
Ana chuckled.
"I haven't changed!" He glared at her. I have not changed. I'm still me.
"It's true you're still Amin-chan, but you've mellowed out a bit." Ana kept walking and didn't look at him, which irked him.
"I have not changed." He growled.
Ana rolled her eyes. "If you say so."
He glared at her. "I'd say you've changed, but you're still the same obnoxious girl I meet that first day."
Ana grinned up at him. "Does that mean you like obnoxious girls?"
He blushed and felt even more annoyed. "I'm done with this line of conversation."
She didn't respond and kept walking while looking smug.
Seto's eyes narrowed at her. "You really enjoy ticking me off, don't you?"
"Tease, Amin-chan. It's called teasing. And two people who are close to one another usually tease each other."
He thought about what she said. Really? Teasing means you like one another. I guess it can be entertaining, but not when I'm being teased. He glanced over at her and noticed the dark circles under her eyes. "Did you sleep well last night?"
She blushed at his question and looked at the ground. "I slept fine."
Her reaction made his heart skip a beat. Did she really?
"Hey, Amin-chan?" Ana's voice was soft as she looked at the ground and slightly pursed her lips.
"Hmm?" He didn't know why, but the face she was making made him feel a little uneasy.
"Do you ever dream about… people?" She asked quietly.
He looked at her, confused. "Sometimes, but I rarely dream. Why?"
"Oh, no reason." Ana's mouth twitched, and she half frowned.
"You rarely ask questions for no reason. Are you dreaming about people?" Seto's brow furrowed. His immediate thought was that Rin was invading her dreams. Maybe shipping him out of country wasn't enough. She blushed at his question and said nothing. That is not the reaction I was expecting. "Who are you dreaming about?"
"I…" Ana's eyes narrowed and instead of answering, she asked flat out. "Do you ever dream about me?"
"No."
She looked embarrassed and turned her head away. What? I've never dreamt about Ana. That would just be odd. Why is she even…
"Do you dream about me?" Seto asked curiously.
Ana didn't answer. Instead, she looked irritated. Wait, what does that mean?
"Do you?" He pressed again and she let out a sigh that came out as a hiss from in-between her teeth.
"Sometimes."
His heart skipped a beat. For some reason, the idea that Ana dreamt about him made him feel odd.
He smirked. "What about?"
"I do not have to tell you about my dreams." She stated flatly, and he didn't get to press her because they arrived at school just then.
Why does she not want to tell me? Does that mean they're bad? Am I pissing her off in her dreams? Seto wanted to know, but she sped up and went straight to the classroom and to her seat. He sat down and pulled out his tablet. This is going to bug me. It really got on his nerves. He couldn't focus on class and work that morning. What did I do in her dreams? Did I say something mean to her? She can't be mad at me about that, could she? It wasn't me though; it was a dream. Ugh, why is she even dreaming about me in the first place? The bell finally rang for lunch and Seto took his stuff to his usual spot behind the school. He could sense someone had followed him.
"What do you want, Arata?" Seto guessed and was proven right when Arata stepped around the corner.
"How'd you know it was me?" He gave him an awkward grin. Seto noticed his lunch box and sighed.
"I felt more irritated than usual. You're not going to leave me alone, are you?" Seto glared at him.
Arata chuckled and plopped down next to him. "Nope."
"What do you want?"
"Nothing. I just needed a place to hide." Arata popped open his lunch box, said itadakimasu, and started eating.
"Hide?" Seto wasn't that interested but asked anyway as he worked on eating his lunch. Oh, crap. I've gotten used to having Knock-off Yugi around. No! I have not changed.
"Oh, just a freshman girl. She's been following me around. I think she wants me to ask her out." Arata sighed.
Seto paused at this. The idea that someone wanted to date Arata seemed odd, but now that he thought back to it, Arata was a social butterfly. "Why don't you?"
Arata looked at him, surprised. "Because I don't like her that way."
"Ah." Seto hadn't been paying much attention to the relationships of those in class, and honestly, he didn't care.
Arata was grinning at him. "Finally interested in my life?"
"No."
He laughed, and Seto glared at him. A thought crossed his mind, and he decided it might be ok to ask Arata.
"Do you have anyone you like?" Seto asked and Arata nearly dropped his chopsticks. He gave Seto a terrified look. "What the frick is with that reaction?"
"I don't know. I just never figured you'd ask me something like that." Arata laughed nervously. He paused and looked thoughtful. "I've crushed on people before, but never felt that I liked them enough to date them."
"Ah," Seto didn't really care about that, he was just setting it up for his next question. "Do you ever dream about those people?"
Arata dropped his chopsticks this time, but they landed in his lunch box. His face was the same color as his hair. "I didn't know we were close enough to talk about wet dreams."
Seto raised an eyebrow. "What's a wet dream?"
"You—never mind, I shouldn't be surprised. Sometimes your kind of dense, Seto." Arata took a breath and calmed down. Seto glared at him. "You've never had a sexy dream where you woke up… hard?"
Seto stared at him like he was an idiot. "No, why the frick' would that have happened?"
"Um, that's actually a pretty normal and healthy thing. You might want to get that checked out by a doctor." Arata sighed. "Oooh, you've never dreamt about Sakurai-san then, have you?"'
"Why would I have!" He was still pissed about the comment that something was physically wrong with him. Seto was seriously considering hitting him.
"Dreaming about the person you're attracted to is normal."
Seto was taken aback. It's normal?
"Do you not dream about people at all?" Arata looked at him, concerned.
"My dreams are either memories or lucid dreams. The lucid dreams are helpful. I get to think over projects even when I'm asleep."
Arata grimaced. "Only you would want to work in your sleep. Wait—is that why Sakurai-san was annoyed this morning? Did she tell you that you she dreamed about you?"
"I suppose. I'm assuming I pissed her off in her dream. I don't know why she'd get mad at me for something in a dream, though."
Arata looked at him, gave him a sympathetic smile and patted his arm, which ticked Seto off. "Seto, I kind of doubt that was the type of dream she had or else she would have told you what happened in the dream."
Seto glared at him. "Then what kind of dream do you think it was?"
Arata opened his mouth when the warning bell for class rang. He quickly packed up his lunch. "Well, something a lot more embarrassing."
What? What does that mean! Seto didn't get to ask anymore questions, since Arata headed back to class. Seto devoured the rest of his lunch, then also headed back. Ana was talking with her friends when he got back. As usual, he sat back down in his seat and took out his tablet, but he couldn't focus. Ah! This is dumb! It continued that way for the rest of the day. Finally, the last bell rang, and Ana got up and turned to him.
"Ready to go?" She smiled and seemed as chipper as normal.
What did she dream! Damn it! He quietly packed up his stuff instead of asking. As usual, they went to his apartment to study. When Ana got to his door, she paused.
"What?" He looked at her, confused. She quickly shook her head and smiled before going in. Thankfully, he was good at compartmentalizing when studying. He quickly suppressed his desire to know what she'd dreamt and focused on tutoring. Ana seemed a little fidgety, but she quickly settled down. Nothing unusual happened. When they finished, Seto walked her the rest of the way home as usual, but now that tutoring was over, his desire to know about the dream resurfaced.
"I'll see you tomorrow at practice," Ana said when she got to the gate.
Seto couldn't take it anymore. "What did you dream?"
Ana paused and looked at him, surprised. "You're still thinking about that?"
"Yes."
She smirked at him. "I'm not telling."
"Why?"
"I'll tell you if you ever dream about me. Bye." She ran into her house, leaving him alone.
Ah! Obnoxious girl! Why would I dream about you? Seto could feel a headache coming on. He went back home and continued with work. Or at least he tried. It was nearing midnight when he finally gave up and went to bed.
Seto opened his eyes and stared up at his bedroom ceiling. It was black.
"Oh, great. I'm dreaming. All that talk about dreams must have induced a lucid dream." Seto sat up in his bed. "Well, guess I should work on some—Ana?"
Ana was sitting at the foot of his bed with her legs off the side, swinging them back and forth.
"Greeaaat. Well, now I can tell her that she showed up in my dreams." Seto rolled his eyes and was about to get off the bed and go work on something when Ana spoke up.
"You're really going to work?"
Seto turned to dream Ana and narrowed his eyes. "You aren't the real Ana, if you're asking me that. Of course, I'm going to work. What else would I do?"
She smiled at him and stood up. He blinked and her outfit changed from her school uniform to a long, modest white negligee.
"What the hell, subconscious!" Seto could feel his face getting warm. "Change back. Why would you even wear that? Ana would never wear that!"
"Really? Never?" She grinned at him.
He was panicking. "No! She wouldn't. Why would she?"
"Because you want to see her in it?" Dream Ana tilted her head and put a finger to her lips. "I didn't expect your tastes to be so modest. You don't want to see me in something a little sexier?"
He tensed and held up his hands. This was not a type of Ana he could handle. "No-No! This is fine. Don't change!"
She giggled and sat down on the bed next to him.
"What are you doing? Stay back." Seto commanded, but she didn't. "This is my dream. I'm in charge!"
"Of course. You're the one who wanted to see me in different outfits, didn't you?" She shifted forward toward him.
Seto quickly scooted back and slammed into the wall behind him, but dream Ana didn't stop her advance. She closed in on him and brought her face close to his, smiling seductively. His heart was racing a mile a minute, and he was frozen.
"Seto," she whispered breathlessly before she leaned in and—
Thud. Seto fell out of bed, wrapped in his sheets. His heart was beating loudly in his chest.
"What the hell!" He covered his hands with his face as he tried to calm down. The realization hit him. "Ugh…. I guess I know what a wet dream is now."
