I own nothing. May contain Out of Character moments.
After recovering from that disaster and clearing up any misunderstandings, Class 1A were ready for the next phase of the exam. Though when the field outside was reduced to rubble by a series of explosions, Mineta knew this was going to be worse than the first round. That, however, didn't stop him from expressing his utter most confusion at the sight.
"But why!?" He said, staring at the smouldering ruins of the testing site. Honestly, it looked like a gang of Villains just attacked it. However, when Mineta noticed several people deliberately placing themselves amongst the debris, he understood what this was going. And just to confirm that thought, the intercom came on.
"Our next round will be the last one! You will venture into these ruins as bystanders, who will then perform rescue work!"
The air around 1A began to thicken to the word 'bystander'. And while some like Bakugou don't understand the exact context, they understood that word had significant meaning. Mineta swallowed the lump in his throat as his eyes went to his partner. And there Midoriya stood; hand on his chest, as the events of the past played within his eyes.
"Bystanders… I'm really sorry that said something like that. If I was–" Midoriya began as he turned to his classmates and friend. But before he could utter another word, Iida put a hand on Midoriya's shoulder.
"Midoriya-kun, we understand. While you weren't right, you weren't wrong either. Most of just waited for things to blow over, hoping for the best of outcomes to just be handed to us… But I now know that isn't how we should handle Hero work or life for that matter. We must be unafraid and take that step forward whenever we could. With tempered courage of course…" Iida said, his eyes stern but proud.
"So let's not worry over past affairs and just focus on graduating from our current roles. 1A will be bystanders no more." He concluded before turning to his classmates. And with a spark within each of their eyes, the UA spirit was fully rekindled and ready to undertake any trial.
"Everyone… Thank you." Midoriya muttered as his gentle smile returned.
"Alright! Now I'm fired up! Round three here we come!" Kirishima shouted.
"It's actually the last round. But sure, let's go with that." Jirou corrected with a chuckle.
"Just to catch everyone up, there are professionals out there feigning injuries of differing degrees. It's our duty to rescue them and we'll be scored on how well we perform. The exam will begin soon, but didn't exactly mention when. They also didn't mention what the grading criteria is…" Yaoyorozu explained, gesturing to the monitor that still displayed the ruined field.
"Then let's just use what we're taught as a reference. I can't imagine this exam being that much different from it…" Kouda suggested nervously.
"Then that's the plan. Though… Will you be alright Bakugou-chan? You were never too keen on rescue work after all..." Tsuyu asked, turning to the explosive blonde.
"You worrying over nothing. I've got this exam by the balls." He answered with a growl. However, despite this declaration, Mineta still felt something felt off about him. Sure, Bakugou was still the aggressive beast everyone knew him for… But considering what the shorter boy noticed leading up to now–
"Stop. Psychoanalyzing. Me. Keep it up and our little understand won't save you… Hell, I might even sic that wolf bitch on you." He said with a snarl, his murderous gaze interrupting Mineta's thoughts.
Before any of 1A's members could diffuse the situation themselves, the intercom buzzer did it for them. And everyone knew that this was the signal that things were about to get crazy…
"Terrorists have launched a massive attack and have already wrecked massive havoc throughout the city! With most of the roads out of commission, rescue and relief teams are having great difficulty reaching the scene. Your mission is to perform the rescue and provide the aid in their stead." The intercom said as the building began unfolding again.
Mineta looked to Midoriya and found his partner looking back. So with a nod, they began readying themselves for the one thing they know how to do…
"Let's bring some hope partner!" Mineta shouted as he and Midoriya stretched out their arms and legs.
"Of course!" Midoriya replied as the building finished unfolding.
"Save every life you can!" The intercom said as the start buzzer sounded. The 100 Heroes-in-Training began scattering in every possible direction as quickly as they could. And while Mineta was glad they don't have to fight each other… He knew this was going to be rough. 100 people weren't nearly enough to cover every spot of this massive field. This was a test of efficiency…
"There! By that collapsed building!" Shouji shouted as he retracted his duplicated ears. When 1A arrived on the scene, they saw a crying child all bloodied and roughed up. Mineta knew this was all fabrication… But damn, these 'professional victims' performed as though they really were hurt and in distress.
"Wah! M-My Grandpa's trapped… O-Over there… He's getting crushed!" The boy cried as he frantically pointed to a nearby rubble pile.
"I'll get him out! Mineta-kun! Take care of him while I rescue his grandfather!" Midoriya nodded before turning to the rubble pile. Mineta didn't even respond as he went into automatic, examining the boy's faux injuries as best as he could. These really were well done, almost indistinguishable from the real thing…
"Then we'll start heading to other areas. Good luck you two!" Iida said before 1A began breaking up into smaller groups. Mineta took a moment to look up at his departing friends and noticed Uraraka wistfully staring at them. Though based on her line of sight… It was more accurate to say that she was staring at Midoriya.
She looked like she yearned for him, as Mineta came to expect for a girl with a crush on his best friend. But what came after startled him… In Uraraka's eyes, the shorter boy could see a ferocious determination rise up to seal away the affection she feels. And while the new resolve on her face made her look more confident… Mineta could tell her spirit within was anything but.
Or at least, that's what her back said when Uraraka finally turned to leave.
"I should talk to her whenever I get the chance… Bottling things up usually ends very poorly…" Mineta thought, wondering just how he'll approach the problem.
"Hey! Don't lose focus! That'll cost you something in a real crisis! Points off for you!" The boy shouted, snapping the shorter boy's attention back to reality. That's when his words registered in Mineta's brain… The victims are doing the grading? Right here, right now?
Then again, they're the professionals here. The HUC, the company these victims work for, has probably studied the dos and don'ts of a rescue at least a hundred times. And they're usually the first to see an examinee in action, making their reports the most accurate. So if they don't feel particularly safe or inspired by a Hero-in-Training's actions, it's safe to assume real victims wouldn't either…
"Sorry! You're going to be fine, it looks worse than it actually is. I'll get you to an evac center right away." Mineta said as he was about to carry the boy on his back.
"B-But my grandpa! He's still–" He cried, quickly returning to character.
"He's right here!" Midoriya shouted as he carried an elderly man on his back.
"My… Grandson… Is he safe…?" The elder asked weakly.
"He's okay sir. Mineta-kun, go help elsewhere, I'll bring them–" Midoriya began before the shorter boy cut them off.
"Your hands are too full dude. We can't risk dropping either of them and worsening their injuries." Mineta replied as he picked up the boy. He wasn't exactly light, being that the boy was probably an adult pretending to be a kid… But Mineta had grown a lot stronger since the start of the year. His strength and stamina should, at the very least, last until they get to where a center has been set up.
"… You're right, that would be bad. Let's go." Midoriya said after a brief moment. The two then took off towards the first place they thought of to look, the area where the Anteroom was. And all over, they could see other Heroes-in-Training working their hardest to help the faux victims. It just goes to show how seriously they were all taking this…
"I can't believe this is all of this is just an exam. With how everyone is working and how this whole field feels… It's no different from an actual disaster." Mineta said as he looked to Midoriya.
"But it makes sense why they would make it as realistic as possible. In an actual crisis, who we are as a Hero and as a person is laid bare… Our strengths, our weaknesses, our level of experience, our character… It reveals everything. And we either rise above the waves or sink beneath them as they continually crash against us." Midoriya replied as a melancholic shine appeared in his eye.
"Hey, we've managed to stay afloat despite all that's happened. We'll be fine." Mineta said before his own shortcomings came into mind.
"Young men, is now really the time to get all philosophical?" The elderly man on Midoriya's back asked. The two flinched to that question but kept up their running stable. He was right, now was not the time for this. And so, the duo continued onward in vigilant silence. Looking all around in case something came their way…
But to their relief, nothing did and they've arrived at the established center. And already there were plenty of other victims here being treated as more were trickling in. It seems the Heroes here were sorting them based on the severity of their injuries… Triage was it?
"There's already so many…" Midoriya commented as he looked around.
"You two! Let me take a look at their injuries." One of the Heroes-in-Training said, pointing to Mineta and Midoriya.
"R-Right! The boy has a sprained ankle and a few cuts on his head. There's a lot of blood, but he speaks well enough to make me think it's not as bad as it looks." Mineta replied as he carefully set the boy down.
"I have the boy's Grandfather. He's conscious but also incredibly weak. I couldn't find any externals injuries." Midoriya replied as he handed off the elderly man to another Hero.
"Thank you bringing that to our attention. Head back out and continue the rescue efforts." He replied with a nod.
"Yes sir!" Midoriya and Mineta shouted as they charged back into the nearby metro zone. They passed through several small groups making their efforts to move people out of the ruins. But none of them really needed any extra hands, so the duo continued to look. That was until a familiar voice howled out to them…
"Ball Boy, Shrub Kid, over here!"
Mineta halted abruptly as dread ran up and down his spine. He turned to the source and found Okami holding up a part of a building with another Hero wearing an exoskeleton. A third Hero with an odd helmet was going in and out, moving chunks of rubble as quickly as possible. But even Mineta could tell they weren't being very efficient about this at all…
"What happened!?" Midoriya asked as he ran in causing Mineta to hastily follow.
"Building suddenly collapsed, was nearby, and barely kept it from burying these two. But now we're stuck. If we move, the building crumbles. If we don't, progress is unbearably slow." Okami answered quickly.
"I'm on the case! Midoriya, help these guys out." Mineta said before he started running. He then lobbed hairballs on every crack and break he could see around the structure. And though blood began trickling down his head again, Mineta knew this would be worth it. Before long, the shorter boy had returned to Okami.
"That was fast… Robot man, step away after the two inside comes out." Okami commented before looking over to the Hero with the exoskeleton. The guy nodded and waited for the Hero with the odd helmet and Midoriya. And when they did, both of them carrying rubble, he nervously stepped away from the part he was holding up…
Only to sigh in relief as Mineta's hairballs did its job.
Okami then moved away from her side, carefully listening to the ruined building before her. Nothing…
"Not bad, this will hold up for a good while. Now get to helping out the three people inside. I'm too big to fit in such a small space, so I'll be elsewhere." Okami ordered before dashing off on all fours. Mineta blinked as Okami disappeared around the remains of another building. It was a pretty big shock, seeing the person who threatened to maul him act so calm and collected…
And she wasn't a bad leader to boot…
"Wait! Why am I just standing around? I've got people to help!" Mineta thought as he shook out of his stupor. However, that plan was cut short when Mineta found that he couldn't go into the building. Three people were already a tight fit, so any more and they'd just be slowed down. So the shorter boy aimed to do something else… He began scrounging around for items that could be useful for the given mission.
You see, in situations like these, supplies would be limited. Wouldn't it be wise to replenish them with whatever's buried around them?
"Or I could just be wasting time and energy that could've been used to help people… Oh well, better to have it than not." Mineta thought as he pulled out a small metal box out of the rubble. Opening it, he found it only half full of medical goods. Not great, but it's better than nothing. Especially if they're used together with various other items he found.
Mineta closed the box and quickly began packing all the items he found in/on a backpack he also found. He then put it on before going back to where Midoriya was. And luckily, once he had arrived back at the ruined building, the shorter boy saw his partner leaving the building supporting a man whose arms were clearly broken.
"How is that fake!?" Mineta thought as he hurried over.
"Mineta-kun! Do you have anything for splints?" Midoriya asked as he laid the man down before preparing him for first aid.
"Plenty. Let's get to work." The shorter boy answered as he set down the backpack. He then pulled out two large umbrellas and two pair of jeans. Mineta began aligning the umbrellas against the man's broken arms as Midoriya tore the jeans in half. The green haired boy then tossed two of the halves to his friend and both began to splint the man's arms quickly. And before long, both of them finished.
"Thank you, no points deducted for your treatment." The man said as Midoriya helped him back onto his feet. Mineta unconsciously, but quickly, let out a sigh of relief. It seems they were doing better than he initially thought. So, as long as he and Midoriya don't have any serious lapses in judgement, things will be fi–
That thought, along with any hopes of smooth sailing, was immediately interrupted by a loud explosion.
And that has been Chapter 92!
Again, no news this week. Next chapter, we'll be heading into the more frantic part of the exam as Mineta and Midoriya will be thrown head long into the battle. Literally. So...
Until Next Time. T1.
