Hey guys! Back with another chapter a little early because I won't be active on FFN for about a week(I'm going on vacation!). Didn't want to keep you guys waiting too long for this next one, so here is chapter 21! Hope you enjoy!
Chase watched as the ninja prepared for Garmadon's upcoming attack on them. He was nervous, especially seeing as everyone was training themselves mad.
Chase couldn't do anything, really. He was only an eleven-year-old boy with time powers he could barely control–the ninja definitely didn't need him anytime soon.
He sat on a rock that overlooked the trees. He stared straight into the heart of Ninjago city, anticipating Garmadon's attack any minute now. But he knew that Garmadon wouldn't come now. Normally, his visions took place a few days after he'd had it, not the day of.
Chase could feel butterflies in his stomach. Nerves, he guessed. He wanted to help so badly, but he knew very well that he'd only get in the way.
He rested his chin on his knees, suddenly bored of watching the ninja train. Minute after minute he'd watched Cole pound the earth, Nya balance on one arm, Kai practice his targeting, Jay kick the bag so hard he'd made it hole in it, Lloyd fall off the obstacle course time and time again, and Zane meditate without so much as a flinch. It really was starting to bore him.
So he decided to avert his attention to the simple yet beautiful nature of the trees swaying in the light breeze. But that soon became tedious, so he settled on staring at the chalky, rough texture of the rock he was residing on.
And when he looked up again, he saw a familiar creature. "Hey, there, Scarlet." He stretched out his hand to the fox formling. He knew that Scarlet was Kara, but he still chose to refer to the fox as the name he had given her, rather than her human form name. He was still adjusting to the fact that his best friend was a fox formling.
Suddenly, Scarlet morphed into human form, startling Chase.
"Woah." He jumped a little but stayed seated on the rock. "Hi there."
"Hey." Kara took a seat on the rock beside him.
"What are you doing up here? You know my friends can see you." Chase gestured to the ninja, who were so busy training they didn't even see Kara.
"I know. But I sensed you were in a bit of a pickle."
"Pickle? What kind of a pickle?"
"You know, with Garmadon preparing an attack and everything."
"How did you know?" Chase was dumbfounded. "I didn't tell you, did I?" He didn't remember telling Kara about his vision. So how did she know?"
"I just sensed it. I don't know, recently I've been feeling all these sensations. I think I can feel your emotions in a way, and today, I picked up nerves coming from you. I doubt it's nerves over a girl, so the only reasonable reason to be feeling nervous is if the ninja or yourself was in danger. And that would most likely be Garmadon putting you in danger. Get it?"
Chase nodded, still confused but also extremely fascinated at how Kara could feel his emotions. "Hold on a sec–you can feel my emotions? How? Is it just me, or can you feel other people's emotions too?"
"I'm not sure. I think it's more general. I found that I feel people's emotions stronger if I'm near to them. But for some reason, I felt yours from miles away. I just started feeling it only a couple of days ago. I think I've reached a new level in the formling."
"Like a power being activated?"
"Yeah, maybe."
"Should we go check it out? I bet Wu has scrolls on this sort of stuff."
"Sure, but is that alright? It seems like your friends are busy."
"Absolutely! It's not like they need me or anything. Plus, I have nothing else to do." It was true, Chase was bored to death just watching the ninja repeat the same thing over and over again.
He led Kara into the bounty and down to Sensei Wu's quarters. Sensei Wu, as expected, was meditating with a pot of tea brewing next to him.
To be respectful, Chase knocked.
"Yes," Sensei Wu answered annoyedly, not knowing who it was.
"Uh, Sensei? Could I use the library?"
"Of course." Chase knew that the library was for public use, but he always felt wrong just waltzing in without permission. He still felt like a guest in this bounty, even though he'd been with the ninja for a while now.
"Come on." He beckoned for Kara to follow him. She did. Together, they walked down the hall and into the library. Scrolls lined the walls in neat little stacks. It was such a perfect sight that Chase didn't want to dig through them and ruin the perfectness of the organization, but he was really curious as to why Kara could feel other peoples' emotions.
They both started searching, starting on opposite ends of the library. Chase pulled out scroll after scroll, searching for one with a title that was relevant to what they were looking for. He found his gaze wandering over to Kara, who was also searching busily.
He suddenly felt butterflies again, and at first he thought he was just getting nervous about the attack they were anticipating. But then he realized that he was nervous about Kara. He smiled and blushed, turning back to searching.
He changed sections, trying the mythical creatures area. He knew Kara wasn't a mythical creature, but maybe she was a rare one, and maybe not everyone knew that people like her existed.
The next scroll he pulled out was entitled "Strange Foxes." That was enough for Chase. He pulled out, excited. "Kara, I think I found something." She rushed over to him and together, they looked through the scroll.
The scroll was conveniently separated into different sections. There were a lot of sections. The first one was labeled: Different types of mythical foxes. They read through the types. Then the scroll went into detail about each one. Each type of fox had a section labeled: Abilities.
They both scanned all the "abilities" sections. Finally, they landed on a section that said: "This fox has the ability to feel others' emotions. It can sense the emotions of the person nearest to them. Special exceptions of when the kitsune can sense emotion from very far away may be because of a certain connection."
They stopped reading there. They'd figured it out. Kara was a kitsune.
"Wait, so I'm a kitsune? I've heard of those. I thought those were just mythical creatures."
"But you're also a formling, right?" Chase was confused once again.
"Yes. I think that makes me a formling, but instead of a fox formling, I'm a kitsune formling. Wow, that's quite odd."
"And intriguing."
"Hey, I was thinking, maybe I could scope out Garmadon's forces, see what we're in for, you know?"
"No way, that's too dangerous. I don't want you to get caught."
"I'm a kitsune that looks practically identical to an ordinary fox. They aren't going to think anything of me. Plus, I could get some pretty useful information for you guys. That would definitely help with your prep, right?" Chase considered her points. She was right–Garmadon most likely wouldn't know what she was. Chase would never have guessed she was a kitsune or a formling.
"Alright, but be careful. And don't take too long. We don't have much time."
"Of course, I'll be back soon. You have an hour before you can start worrying about me."
"Wait, do you know where Garmadon and his forces are?"
"I'll figure it out. They can't be far, and I'm pretty fast. I'll see you soon, okay?"
"Okay, see you soon." Chase waved her goodbye, feeling anxious. It didn't feel right to just let her go, but there was no changing her mind now. He watched her gallop off into the forest.
Chase sighed. "Guess I'm on my own again."
OooooooooooO
It had been an hour, and Kara was still nowhere in sight. But Chase knew she was okay–she had to be.
A loud booming noise shook Chase from his thoughts. A large shadow was passing over them. Everyone was forced to look up. Looming right above them was, with no doubt, one of Garmadon's ships.
It moved slowly out in front of the bounty until Chase could see who exactly was on board. And he could see Garmadon, laughing like a maniac.
Garmadon started to speak, but Chase wasn't listening. Something moving around in a cage at the back of the ship caught his attention. He squinted. The object was orange. It was small. It was frightened.
Chase inhaled slightly in horror. With a gulp, he realized that tiny moving object locked in a cage at the back of Garmadon's evil ship…was Kara.
