AO3 Unnerfable: I wonder to what extent the angel influenced Monoma? I'm interested in finding out.
Response: As you have already seen, the direct influence of a being from Maple old world on his quirk by allowing him to hold a semi-permanent copy of her powers gave his quirk a minor evolution in the form of copying quirks from a distance. Whether or not this is the end of the evolution, will be revealed later. But take this as an example as to what will happen with others in the future as more of Maple game world spills over into MHA Universe. I won't spoil too much about who will get a similar treatment next, but… BOOM-SHAK-ALA-KA.
AUTHORS NOTE
I know the next few chapters will be dialogue heavy, or rather dialogue focused, but the fights will continue soon enough. Even so these will be interesting world building chapters, that I would rather place midway through the first part of the fighting round.
Also, as a side topic mostly unrelated to the story, I will be going on a long vacation to Portugal with my family and won't be back home till midway though the next month after I post this chapter. So, you will see me dropping my monthly chapters at the end of the month like I did for this month due to being busy getting ready for the big trip. I will be working on writing the chapters while still on vacation, but I doubt I will be able to upload them while I am in Portugal. If I can upload them though, I will not try to make everyone wait too long again, but I probably won't be able to so get ready to be patient again.
UA SPORTS FESTIVAL
NEZU & UA BOARD MEMBER MEETING ROOM
(BEFORE THE FIRST MATCH)
(THIRD PERSON POV)
At this very moment, all the board members were losing their minds as they were divided between three different tasks. The first important task was going through check ups with the heroes and security cameras. With the second one going through the support gear approval and asking the remaining contestant in their rooms if they had snuck in quirk suppressant drugs. Finally, the third one was doing battle simulations for the remaining fights and telling Cementoss and Midnight what to be ready for.
The second most important task was almost done, as well as was likely the first to be done due to how simple and easy it was to do compared to the others. Anyone who brought quirk suppressants with them was obediently handing them in without complaint. With the first important and third important following suit, the third task they decided needing doing ending up being of especial importance once the matches had been changed. This required Nezu specifically as they had no time to discuss unanimously what safety measures to put in place and had left all decisions to Nezu.
The hard part however would be to put safety measures in place before the more dangerous matches began. This was why the third task was the most frustrating for Nezu as it was already taken care of in advance before the festival had begun. Yes, he took the time to run the millions of possible pairings and matchups for the final round of the tournament as a safety precaution. Though rigging essentially what was the entire third part of the tournament was immoral, it was necessary considering how dangerous half the match ups would have been.
The first three matches were relatively fine, as well as the upcoming fourth as he needed to prevent the team of four from coming in first and second place. Though not against the rules, if he allowed such a thing to occur during the first ever team format then others may make secret deals in the future. If that happened then it would not be able to push students properly during the competition. After all, he wanted every fight for them to give their all, that was the spirit of the sports festival. To nip their idea in the bud and keep the final match fair and proper then they needed to make sure two different teams fought each other.
The fifth and six matches should be fine so long as the support students and Tenya Ida don't get caught up in trash talking. Both due to Dark Shadow being able to take over Tokoyami if he goes berserk as the feather headed teen warned them, as well as discrimination issues. Tenya Ida had it out for Himiko since the entrance exams, and their time at UA has only made the tension build up even more. With Himiko now wielding one for all, losing her temper was practically guaranteed to get him killed if he pushed her buttons even further after the UA attack.
Match seven had a general education course student facing both a class representative for one of the hero classes and a recommended student. With Denki Kaminari being near the bottom in terms of quirk control and intelligence it was basically two underdogs versus the elites. Though Normally an exciting atmosphere, it could just as easily spark the explosive gas of tension between the hero course and general education students.
Finally, was the eighth match where it would likely go all down hill immediately from the announcement to start fighting.
Yuga Aoyama and Momo Yaoyorozu were the very definition of a pushover over… well compared to their partners anyway. Shiozaki was overflowing with intense determination, enough so that Aoyama was clearly scared of his partner more than his opponent. Then there was Maple, who as proven by the UA attack, if you push her mental buttons too far she will lose control. In the case of Yaoyorozu though, on paper she appears to be reliable for reigning in Maple if she gets too into the fight. The heiress unfortunately, is in reality, just as submissive to her partner as Aoyama was but in the opposite way. But it wasn't like the religious girl would actually do it, attempting a public exorcism on Maple… right?
Originally Todoroki and Ashido were supposed to eliminate Shiozaki before she got anywhere near Maple in the matchup chart. Though he felt bad for Aoyama, it was a necessary evil to keep the peace of the sports festival intact. He would have made it up to the boy by pulling strings to get him a good to intern with if he had only lower ranked heroes.
Tenya Ida was seated on the complete opposite end of the board, with their hopes that at worst Todoroki would be the one to eliminate him and his partner. They all offered a silent and mental apology to Tsuyu Asui for dragging her down with him, but they could not risk him angering Himiko into a mental meltdown. Since the second match would have been against four mutant quirk users. No one could idiotically talk about mutant type inferiority when discussing the fight afterwards. And anyone who did try it in the next match would stop immediately either from the pressure of Endeavour or the Ida family.
Hitoshi Shinso and Denki Kaminari were supposed to face off against one of the support students. This was to show what happens when you rely solely on your quirk as a hero, but without any major issues due to who won. Most of the people applying for the hero course were stuck in that mindset of that their quirk was the most important thing, this due the HPSC and the media. So he hoped this fight could have safely shown the reality of the situation without affecting either student that much.
Mei Hatsume and Kinoko Komori were supposed to go up against Reina López and Shihai Kuroiro to bring the more docile half of the four out of their shells. While the more energetic half of the group would see firsthand, all be it on a small scale what can happen if they are unable to control themselves without someone doing it for them.
The fourth matchup would have simply been moved down to the fifth spot. No matter what the outcome of the other matches any opponent they faced would be fine, so there would be no worries from that fight.
Sixth on the bracket would have been a fight of the age-old argument of support gear versus quirks. This done so as the martial artist and dinosaur loving girl would have fought the next support course group. However, this would be done much more spiritedly compared to the earlier fight with the support course student versus Kaminari and Shinso. Especially since Itsuka Kendo and Setsuna Tokage would gladly fight them in a straightforward fight or most likely do it in a playful manner if Tokage had any say in it.
For the seventh round, it would be a … lets call it a relatively normal fight by UA standards as both sides would give their all and enjoy it. The best part was that no matter who won, they would have a good match against whoever won the last match.
If Hiryu Rin and Togaru Kamakiri won over Himiko Toga and Pony Tsunotori then they would face either Izuku or Maple with their respective partners. If the duo fought Maple and Momo Yaoyorozu then it would be a technically skilled fighter in Rin and a strategist in Yaoyorozu, both with a partner who fights on instinct. However, if they fought Izuku Midoriya and Jurota Shishida, it would be a great step forward for both young men. As Izuku would learn much from fighting such skilled fighters outside of his own family. While Jurota Shishida would learn from Tokage how to fight better with his instincts as he tended to struggle against them and as he tried to use his head at the same time.
Either way, both sides would grow as both overflowed with determination, but the first fight of Maple versus Izuku was necessary. As in case Maple accidentally freaked out in her first real fight since the UA attack, Izuku ice could stop her quickly.
"But now the safe, structured matches I made are thrown out the window and everyone in the arena is now in danger." Nezu said in an exhausted tone, while everyone else in the room panicked over it.
Fortunately, the Wild Wild Pussycats agreed to take on his request to work as security for the sports festival. Despite the grief of losing the nephew of Mandalay due to a kidnapping at Christmas. Thinking back on it made him feel quite bad about how they were enjoying themselves. While they were celebrating Christmas, the pussycats were on the other side of Japan fretting over a missing Kota that disappeared out of thin air. Most likely due to someone with a teleportation quirk, and or with someone with a silencing or sleeping quirk aiding them.
It reeked of All For One, and before the UA attack he would have thought he was being paranoid. But now he was unsure as he could not fathom why All For One would kidnap Mandalay's nephew.
Though he was unsure at first if they would join the stadium patrol, it seemed the others thought she could use the work to keep her mind off Kota. According to them she has been in a deep depression since he went missing, so it was a welcomed distraction. 'I hope she can hold herself back if someone tries to attack the children.' Nezu thought silently as the others were panicked enough. As much as he would approve of lethal force in that kind of scenario. He will also prefer it if they get captured for information in case they are linked to the HPSC or some other dangerous group.
LEAGUE OF VILLAINS
BAR
(THIRD PERSON POV)
Seeing Maple ditch her chariot at the start of the chariot race made Sally and Iz break out in laughter. It got especially out of control when that horse-like girl followed her lead again and kept it a neck-to-neck race with their top spots. That swimming girl that shocked them as she came in first place with ease for the first round, was keeping her lead. To the point where they questioned if she could actually beat Maple somehow if they went head-to-head.
"... That pink haired bitch is not taking any of this even half seriously so far." Bakugo said with a tsk of his tongue before finishing off his drink, thrusting his glass to Kurogiri for a refill.
"Well, no shit that the map hacker is not taking this seriously, that damn smile of hers made it clear she thinks the sports festival is a joke." Tomura said with spite in his tone as he tilted halfway back to look at Bakugo. The fact that they were living with what he thought was his future girlfriend is the sole reason he hated Bakugo. Other than that, he would probably get along with him as they trash talked heroes… or he thought.
Not realizing Bakugo was more like Izuku than he would like to admit. All he had to talk about was heroes, well he also had his love of spicy food, but those two things were really all he had.
"I meant she is holding back you dumbass. She is probably just barely doing a quarter of what she can really do, and that is at the absolute most." Bakugo corrected him as he took his glass from Kurogiri, feeling the bartender give him a judgemental glare. He knew he was being childish with his choice of words, but unlike Sally this man-child as far as he knew, had no excuse for being a man-child.
Flashback Start
It was just a day after he moved into their hideout with the two girls and decided on the house rules, that they said they had to tell him the truth.
"So, what truth did you need to tell me?" He asked them, wondering what sort of truth was so ground shaking, that they seemed worried.
"Well, you see… we are from a different world without quirks." Sally told him, going on about the videogame, the portal, and their other friends. He was about to call the two of them crazy, but in less than a second that thought died as he saw the serious looks in their eyes.
Letting out a sigh he rubbed the back of his head trying to relieve the headache brewing at the back of his head. "I can tell you two aren't lying, and that would explain that Maple girl and the ice bird monster that appeared." He said unsure of where to go from there with the conversation.
It also made the impact of them releasing him from his jail cell, as well as trusting him to live here with them all the greater. "So, what is your plan to handle the hands creep and his organization?" Bakugo asked them as the conversation of their whole plan began, going on till sunrise the next day.
Flashback End
"WHAT DID YOU SAY!" Tomura said not asked, as he heard it well enough to know what he said.
"Calm down Tomura, you need to focus on studying the UA students for the next attack." Kurogiri said, not liking that Bakugo was suddenly picking fights with his young master. In fact, he seemed to have a completely different air to himself since the last time they met.
As much as he was curious about this, Bakugo raised a good point when you looked at her. "But he was right, her quirk does seem that it could be more powerful than we first thought." He said, trying to steer Tomura back in the right direction in case this ends up slipping past him.
With a tsk noise he turned back to the screen. "Well, he's not wrong, some hackers don't even bother trying to hide they're cheating." Tomura said, hating how he had no choice but to agree with the guy that the girl could become a legitimate threat to them in the future.
What caught their eyes next or rather was of note immediately discussing was Mina Ashido who foolishly declared that there were only sixteen left. The dead silence of the arena as everyone waited for a correction or the end of the second round to be announced was funny for them all.
"Well, that is quite the embarrassing mistake on her part, if she is lucky the fans who record this event will forget to do so this year. But I doubt they will." Kurogiri said remembering his friend jumping the gun similarly when they were teenagers. Friend? Teenagers? He thought it was odd to once again have these strange ideas as he was created by the master to serve him and Tomura. Before he could question it more the others spoke up, causing him to forgo his train of thought.
"I have seen much worse pre-emptive victory calls." Iz said sipping the last of her drink with an ah to express her feeling of being refreshed. Pushing to Kurogiri with a nod he refilled her drink before sliding it back to her.
"I would question you what those moments were, but given our certain crowd of people it usually ends with them dying." Kurogiri said not wanting to hear about what kind of messed up childhoods he guessed they had. Compared to Tomura living on the street, getting experimented on by the HPSC would almost certainly be considered a lot worse. Fortunately, one of the two girls was at least sane enough to not need his constant eye on her for Tomura safety.
"She would have followed me around like the other idiots back in Aldera did if I went to UA. Her and that idiot with the spiky red hair." Bakugo said annoyed at the thought of having useless people follow him around... well have them around him again that is.
At least he knows now how it feels to not have such people weighing you down with constant fake praise so you can actually look at your actions. Looking back on his… well he would never admit it out loud, but before the recent attack he was definitely an asshole at minimum. Now he can add murderer to his list of titles thanks to the dumbass stunt he pulled attacking those weak support course extras.
"Those two are probably the best you could get in terms of 'friends' at UA if you actually went there." Tomura said with heavy air quotes on the word friends as he doubted the blond would ever consider calling them that.
"Mii has followers instead of friends and she turned out… well okay she's not 'okay' but she definitely could be a lot worse." Sally said with her own heavy air quotes, though just like Tomura she had no right to judge someone on such a topic. For him it was social skills and her it was sanity, though unlike him she could at least fake it long enough to blend into crowds all day long if need be. Tomura on the other hand would lose his shit and kill the first asshole to insult him.
The ending where that one person came back from the brink of defeat to cling to the pillar and then launch a final attack was exciting for Sally. Tomura simply wrote it off as Hiryu Rin being too stubborn to accept he lost to everyone else. Iz and Kurogiri both simply commended him for pushing farther than the others around him who became complacent. Bakugo for his part thought Rin could go pretty far in the tournament so long as he was not placed near Todoroki or Maple in the brackets for the final round.
Then the fights began, and the first one left them all shocked as they expected Endeavor's son to win in a frozen landside of a victory. Yet it was a close match, enough so that Tomura and Sally were laughing their asses off making fun of Endeavor.
"WHAT A GLASS TANK! HIS CHARACTER BUILD ISN'T AS OP AS ENDEAVOR THOUGHT!" Tomura exclaimed, laughing so hard he fell on his back, holding his sides as the Endeavor haters on the internet were blowing up over it.
"HIS STATS GOT OUTCLASSED BY THE OPPONENTS EQUIPMENT!" Sally said, rolling slightly back and forth as she saw a similar situation to Maple's first tournament in the game where her shield took down everyone.
The others were a bit more subdued with Bakugo groaning in disappointment at the sight of the number two hero son getting taken down by something simple like a flash grenade. Not realizing that very few people had a natural immunity to the same things he did, due to his quirk. Kurogiri was simply concerned as he understood that it was a very painful tactic to be on the receiving end of. Iz for herself was simply interested in the design of their support gear. As well as remembering fond memories of the first guild versus guild event that Maple tree participated in.
For the second fight, it was even more painful for Bakugo to watch than the previous as the idiots fought each other rather than their actual opponents. Iz liked how the support gear did as the name suggested and supported the quirk of the girl perfectly. Kurogiri meanwhile appreciated how the girls made use of a lack of raw power in order to defeat the clearly stronger opponents. But the two gamers meanwhile…
"I hate status effects… they take the fun out of learning the game's combat mechanics." Shigaraki said, ignoring how he would call his quirk an instant death attack that would also technically not allow for a test of skill or raw strength.
"I know what you mean, status effects take away from the fun of pvp, especially against strong opponents." Sally said forgetting all of the times she took advantage of Maple poison status effect to defeat opponents instead of challenging them head on when they played the game together.
Then came Izuku's fight, the only one Bakugo had a personal interest in other than Maple, though her fight was more because of Sally. Before He would have written off Izuku as having to rely solely on whatever stupid piece of support gear he made at UA. But now seeing him use a quirk or rather a skill earlier, he knows that the damn nerd with his intelligence and analytical skills could easily beat all of them except for Maple.
"We are about to see the best fighter UA has to offer for the first-year class. I hope Pinky understands that, or else she is going to lose hard." Bakugo said with a tone suggesting he wanted to be the one to fight Izuku in the tournament. This was a sentiment the others picked up on quite easily, even the usually socially inept Tomura Shigaraki.
"Sadly, I doubt that you will get far enough past the front gates to fight him." Kurogiri gave his condolences to the young man, feeling bad for him to not settle whatever score he had with the green haired young man.
"I would prefer it if you didn't ruin my equipment I made for you for such a stupid attempt at an attack or challenge." Iz told him, hating that it was harder for her to get materials now compared to killing monsters in a video game.
"As much as I would love to see him kick your ass, I don't have the time or resources to waste on the few minutes of entertainment you could provide." Tomura said, with a slight hint of mockery. But mostly dull seriousness that reflected how much trouble it would be for him and sensei.
"Though I trust your ability to size up opponents, there is no way Maple would lose to him just because you could." Sally told him, slightly annoyed he thought someone could ever beat Maple in a one-on-one fight. However, she did not mind it much, given what he told her about Izuku and their shared past.
"I DON'T WANT TO GO OVER THERE AND FIGHT HIM RIGHT NOW! I'M JUST SAYING THE PINK HAIRED BITCH IS GOING TO LOSE WHEN SHE FIGHTS HIM." Bakugo shouted at them all annoyed they thought he was reckless enough to ask to be teleported there in the middle of a security filled stadium.
Iz let out a stifled laugh at this reaction. "No need to yell at us, we were just joking… well I was anyway, not too sure about gamer boy though.
Bakugo would have continued arguing but then he saw Izuku fighting and… that was not how Izuku would fight if he could. He knew that such a reckless and straightforward attack was going against every quirk calculating bone in his body. Izuku would cautiously be on the defensive and observe his opponent before just going in like that… then again a lot has happened to Izuku in the last year so perhaps he changed. 'If so… then could I still beat him?' Bakugo thought to himself for a moment in disbelief as he saw the fight play out till the end, with Izuku winning.
The wild chase however had the others completely enraptured, especially with Izuku's finishing move and blowing them all away.
"I could be wrong but… does that look like something Maple would do?" Iz asked aloud as Sally responded back to her.
"Yeah it is, only she would think of doing something crazy like flying directly in front of an opponent who can take you down with a single touch." Sally said, knowing that this was definitely Maple's influence on him as he already declared he knew how dangerous she really was like they suspected.
"I commend the young man for his boldness… though now I am worried we may need to make a separate Nomu to deal with him on the next raid." Kurogiri suggested not wanting to let Tomura fight someone that dangerous.
"I agree, and when he dies we can convert him into a new Nomu if All Might is still alive when he dies." Tomura said, too focused on the fight to notice Bakugo glaring at his back with Iz putting a gentle hand on Bakugo shoulder to tell him to calm down. Something that Kurogiri was grateful for to say the least, as he was worried about having to break up a fight between the two.
After Izuku's fight ended and they made a mental note to take her out quickly the next time they fought UA, then the fourth match began. It was, to put it mildly, a joke of a fight as both clearly were holding back against one another as they clearly had two fighters who did best at close combat.
Not much was said all around as they knew from the first and second events that the four were part of a team since the sports festival began. Though the accidental chest grab got Bakugo to fall out of his seat laughing at the accidental eighteen plus moment that was pulled on camera. Sally and Iz however were questioning at whether or not they really saw the twins and their fellow great shielder guildmate among the crowd. But that thought would soon be shrugged as the next battle was about to begin.
