DM Jessica Down The Mine Chapter 2
''Air's not too healthy down there Lucy'' frowned Gru, ''High levels of poisonous gas''. ''You'll need the masks then'' said Lucy, ''And take one down for Jessica''. First Gru was lowered into the hole using winch on Lucy's three mode car. He shone his torch and could just see Jessica crouched down in a tunnel to one side of the mineshaft. She was relieved to see him coming towards her. Jessica tried to get up to hop over to Gru, but she accidently stood on her injured foot. ''Arrgh'' she winced again in pain and fell back to the floor. Gru saw everything, ''Stay there Jessica'' he said, ''Let us come to you''. Then he radioed up to Lucy that he had reached the bottom and now it was Dru's turn to come down on the winch.
He joined Gru in the darkness and they headed towards Jessica. ''Watch your footing Dru'' warned Gru, ''Dere are lots of loose rocks and we don't need another casualty down here''. ''Right, Brother!'' said Dru, tripping over something large, ''WAAAH!''. ''Are you all right Dru?'' sighed Gru. ''Yes thanks brother'' replied Dru. Just then they heard a slight rumble as one or two rocks fell from the roof at the mouth of the tunnel. ''That rumbling is making me nervous, Brother'' quivered Dru. ''Dru, you dislodged a beam!'' said Gru as the rumble got louder. Dru picked up Jessica and carried her because of her injured foot and Gru quickly moved them and himself further up the tunnel to safety. Seconds later, the roof caved in, completely blocking the tunnel mouth. ''We'll never get through that will we?'' said Jessica. ''No we can't get back to the hole'' said Dru, ''What do we do?''. ''Well de first thing is for Jessica to have one of these'' said Gru fitting an oxygen mask on Jessica's face. He tried to radio up to Lucy, but to no avail. ''No response, the radio's had eet, we're on our own now' and I don't know how much oxygen we have left'' he told Dru and Jessica. At that moment outside up on the surface, everyone was waiting anxiously to find out what was going on. Margo suddenly noticed Blondie was missing.
''Mom, where's Blondie?'' she asked Lucy. ''She can't be far away'' replied Lucy. Meanwhile Blondie had found something interesting to investigate, half hidden by bushes were some wooden boards blocking off an entrance into the side of the hill, expect there was a hole in the boards, it was just big enough for Blondie to squeeze herself through. ''Don't panic. Do not panic. Everything's under control'' said Dru back inside the mine shaft. ''Please let there be another way out! I can't stay down here forever!'' said Jessica. Gru and Dru carrying Jessica inched their way along the tunnel. ''Look brother the tunnel forks'' said Dru peering through the gloom. ''Which way do we go?'' asked Jessica. Suddenly they all heard a familiar barking,
Gru shone his torch down one of the tunnels. ''It's Blondie!'' he said, ''She didn't come in with us. Dere must be another way out''. Blondie headed back the way she'd come in the darkness. ''Let's follow her'' said Gru and the three of them followed Blondie. ''Where's she gone?'' asked Jessica as the lost sight of the golden retriever. Blondie barked. ''There she is!'' said Jessica seeing Blondie's eyes shining in the dark. They hurried after Blondie and saw her squeeze through a hole in some board which was the same one she'd come into. ''I SEE THE SHINING LIGHT THROUGH THE HOLE!'' shouted Dru excitedly.
But when they arrived at the boarded up entrance, Gru looked disappointed. ''We can't get through the hole, we're too big'' he said, ''And those boards are nailed up solid''. Meanwhile Blondie scampered off across the fields. Lucy was to make another attempt to call Gru on the oxygen mask radio when she heard Blondie barking. ''Where have you been Blondie?'' she asked, but Blondie barked as if to say ''This way everyone'' and headed off again. ''I think she wants us to follow her Mom'' said Margo. ''Perhaps she knows where Gru, Dru and Jessica are'' said Joshua. ''Right follow that dog!'' said Jackson. Lucy got in her three mode car with Margo, Edith and Agnes while Jillian and Jackson got in their car with Joshua and they all set off over the bumpy ground.
''Where's Blondie taking us?'' asked Agnes. ''I think Blondie's found the entrance to the mine'' said Edith. She was right. The cars halted outside the mine entrance, and everyone got out. ''Anyone other than Jessica's foot hurt?'' called out Jackson. ''No we're all right'' called back Gru on the other side of the boards, ''Or at least we will be when we get out of here''. ''I'll have you all out of there in no time'' smiled Lucy. She got out her flamethrower which she'd used when to melt the ice the ice of Gru's freeze ray when they'd first met, ''This should do the trick. Stand well back you three''. Gru, Dru and Jessica kept a safe distance while Lucy pressed the button and burnt through the wooden boards.
Flames blasted everywhere and in no time at all, the entrance was clear. Gru, Dru and Jessica cheered as they stepped out into the open sunlight and removed their oxygen masks. ''Thank you Lucy'' smiled Gru, ''We don't know what we would have done if eet wasn't for your flamethrower''. Dru handed Jessica over to Jillian and mother and daughter embraced each other tightly. ''Thank goodness you're safe!'' said Jillian. ''But my foot still hurts!'' moaned Jessica, wincing once again. Later on, Lucy took, Margo, Edith, Agnes and Blondie to Jillian's to visit Jessica who was resting her injured foot on the settee with an ice bag. Jillian had taken her to the hospital to have it checked out, Luckily Jessica had only pulled the muscles in her foot, not actually broken it.
She had a big bone for Blondie to thank her for helping her out of the mine shaft. ''I'm not going back to that field again'' said Jessica. To cheer her friend up, Margo told her about the time she'd sprained her ankle playing tag with Edith and Agnes and they both remembered when Margo had fallen into a cavern and discovered a pirate ship and a chest full of treasure. ''You're like two peas in a pod'' said Lucy, ''You've both had similar things happen to you!''.
