I am rewriting this story from the get go. A lot of my ideas have changed which has changed the dynamic of the characters and editing the old chapters was making them seem too forced. Also, Kaito and Yuki are surprisingly turning out quite cute together. I know Kaito or Dai didn't have scenes in their point of view yet but they will soon. It also may be a bit too soon to tell, but who is your favourite character?
2. New Heroes
"And so, with Oikawa's sacrifice, peace spread through both the digital and real worlds."
Eight-year-old Misa Jun Takaishi, otherwise known as 'MJ' for short read the story out to her baby brother Shiro. Being the daughter of T.K. Takaishi and Miya Kitsune, she was a huge fan of her father's books and loved reading to her 1-year-old brother late at night before she slept.
She was sitting in the lounge, legs crossed as her long blonde hair fell to her side while Shiro was surrounded by his toys on the ground.
"Sweetheart, you should get some sleep," Miya said coming inside and picking Shiro up. "It's getting late, and you have school tomorrow."
MJ closed her book and got up. "Ok, Mom." She was just about to head to bed when she heard her dad's voice.
"Misa, sweetheart, Taysuke's on the home phone," T.K. said to her. "He said he wants to talk to you about a project the two of you have due tomorrow."
MJ rolled her eyes. "Don't tell me he hasn't finished it yet." She padded over to their landline phone and took the phone. "Hi Tay, did you still not finish your solar system project? We've had the whole week!" She wasn't the brightest student in her class, but she got decent enough marks and school could be fun sometimes. Tay was weird – boys were usually silly, but Tay was sillier than most. Hana was so much cooler – she didn't study that much but she got good grades, and she was good at soccer!
"I've already finished it," Taysuke said, and she could tell he was pouting just by his tone. "But Makoto hasn't. I'm worried about him. Can we help him?"
MJ frowned. He was calling her because he was worried about his best friend? She didn't really know Makoto well other than the fact that Kaisa did not like him for some reason. She bit her lip, unsure of what to say here.
"I don't know, it's pretty late to help him but I'll try to get Dad to drop me off early so we can try, ok?" MJ said softly. Maybe Hana was right, maybe she was too soft but if it was her friend, she would want to help them too so she could understand the desire.
"Thanks MJ!" Taysuke said, voice brightening up. "You're the best!"
MJ rolled her eyes, even though she knew Tay couldn't see them. "Yes, I know. See you tomorrow, Tay." She put the phone back on its stand. If she could do something to help his friend, she would try.
How could someone so smart be so stupid when it came to self-care? That was something Hanako Kamiya did not understand about her friend. Sure, her best friend Kaito wasn't the best at it, but he knew his limits at the very least and when to stop. She had packed her own lunch as well as two sets of breakfast because given the test today, Kei would not have eaten, wanting to get to school early.
Unlike the other kids, he kept a bike on him so he could ride on it and keep somewhat fit. But did he not realise that not eating would just make him sick? Knowing him, he had probably just forgotten in his haste to make sure he was prepared.
"Packing two sets of lunches again, kiddo?" Tai came in, tousling his hair.
"Kei probably forgot breakfast again," Hana said rolling her eyes. "Seriously, he's going to collapse one of these days."
Tai chuckled. "Izzy was the same way. He'd pass out while working on an important project and we'd have to force him to eat and sleep at times. He got us out of a lot of difficult situations in the dig…in life but he forgot to take care of himself."
Hana paused. It looked as if her dad was about to say something but when he changed the topic, she shook her head although she raised an eyebrow. Her mind was a little preoccupied right now or else she would ask what he was about to say.
"For being so smart, sometimes they can be really dumb," Hana said bluntly. "Where's the squirt?"
"I'm not that little, Hana," Taysuke grumbled, going to sit on the breakfast table causing Hana to laugh.
"You're still a squirt, kiddo," Hana leaned over and tousled his hair causing him to swat her hand and scowl a little. "You could learn a little from MJ."
Taysuke rolled his eyes. "No thanks, sis. I'm fine."
"Hanako, aren't you going to have breakfast?" Their mother, Mimi said as she brought more bread from the kitchen.
It was Hana's turn to scowl a little at the use of her full name, but she shook her head.
"Mom, I told you, it's Hana," Hana corrected her mother. "But no. I'm going to eat with Kei, so the idiot doesn't collapse from not eating."
Mimi sighed. "He really is becoming so much like his father as he grows older. Good of you to take care of him, sweetheart."
Hana nodded. "He's my friend." That was really all there was to be said. She and Kei were different, but he supported her in her love for soccer and she supported him in his love for geography even if there was a lot she didn't understand about it.
As she wasn't eating, she quickly kissed her mom on the cheek and went to wait with her dad for her brother to come. He would drop them both to school on the way to work. MJ sometimes rode with them and other times, she would take the bus with the other kids.
An exasperated sigh left her as she saw Keizuki's bike parked out in his usual spot and she rolled her eyes, giving quite the quick goodbye to her father, hurrying out of the car. She knew his favourite spot and sure enough, she found him underneath the tree with his books scattered about.
"Kei, what am I going to do with you?"
"Kei, what am I going to do with you?"
Keizuki Izumi, also known as Kei for short looked up from his books. He had ridden his bike to school rather early because he wanted to prepare for the exam in the fresh air. He knew the others said he didn't need to prepare for it because he was a genius anyway, but he liked books, and he liked studying. It was so much easier to understand than people were.
Ok, so maybe forgetting to eat breakfast might not have been the best idea – but he had just wanted to get here so quick that he had forgotten his breakfast. Thankfully, Hana always had his back anyway.
"I'm sorry?" Kei said with a small smile causing her to roll her eyes as she brought out the breakfast.
"You're going to collapse one of these days due to hunger," Hana said sighing. "Seriously, you're supposed to be the smart one."
"I am the smart one," Kei hummed. "Most of the time. But this test is our mid-term. It's an important one."
"Kei, you're a walking talking textbook," Hana pointed out. "You don't even need books to revise everything."
Kei rolled his eyes. Just because he enjoyed studying and understood most things didn't mean he knew everything. But he knew that argument had gotten him nowhere in the past so instead he chose to pull out the sandwich she had brought for him and took a bite out of it. "Thank you for this. I really appreciate it."
Hana sighed, leaning back against the tree and beginning to eat her own breakfast. "You're hopeless, you know that, right?"
Kei chuckled. "I'm well aware of this."
"Dai, it's not that early," Yukine Motomiya, Yuki for short rolled her eyes as she walked into the school with her twin brother, Daichi Motomiya, affectionately known as Dai for short. She had mid-length brown hair that went a little below her shoulders and two butterfly clips that held them together. This was similar to her mother Kari's hairstyle when she was younger except Yuki's hair was similar in shade, a nice burgundy like her father Davis as well as a little bit longer than her mother's. Dai on the other hand looked similar to their father in terms of his hairstyle with spiky brown hair, Uncle Tai's goggles tying them together and a current scowl on his face.
"Easy for you to say, you're always up at ungodly hours due to your vision thingy's," Dai muttered in a low voice, looking around to make sure no one else was around since that was something she did not like to talk about. Yuki did appreciate his consideration of this because this was something she did not even talk about with her parents or really anyone.
"Did you at least understand all the formulas?" Yuki asked her brother softly. "Remember, when you don't understand, just break it up into tinier pieces."
"You and Mirei helped me get it a lot better," Dai said rubbing his eyes to wake himself up a little more. "I mean, I'm not as smart as you guys but you guys are awesome teachers."
"That's because they have the patience to teach you, Daichi," Kaito Ishida's voice cut through them, and Yuki jumped a little because she hadn't seen him walk in although her cheeks heated up a little. Despite Kaito and Daichi constantly bickering, he made her heart skip a beat – he was cute and always so organised.
Get it together, Yuki! You might have to stop an argument.
Sure enough. Her brother was beginning to scowl again causing her to sigh and place a hand on her brother's arm.
"Dai is trying his best, Kaito," Yuki said softly, bringing a pleasant smile to her face as she did so and not wanting to upset him either. "Math is just not his strong suite, that's all."
"Yeah, Ishida, besides how do you know I won't do better than you since I had two awesome tutors?" Dai boasted causing Yuki to groan. Did her brother really have to go that far about it?
Kaito rolled his eyes and simply smirked. "We'll see when we get to the test, I guess. Where are the others?"
"I'm not sure but we should get to class, Mom said since we have mid-terms, we should get there a little earlier than usual," Yuki said softly, squeezing her brother's arm to keep him grounded. She understood that Kaito and Dai were like night and day, but she wished they would get along a little more. She…she liked hanging around Kaito.
Kaito smiled at her softly causing her heart to jump again. "Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. Always best to be prepared."
