Chapter 28
Dean and Ice had time before dinner to help Titus around the farm while Sam babysat little Dean and helped Tisha. They were going to spend the night and start out for Ice's friend's homestead and return the horses. And then, the brothers would be going home, back to their world.
"Man, this is quite a spread," Dean said as he looked at the table of food before sitting down beside his brother.
"We wanted to be sure we had a variety in case you didn't like something," Tisha replied.
They were all gathered around the table preparing to have dinner.
"If it is as good as it smells, we're all in luck and Titus is a lucky man."
"That was one of the reasons I married her," Titus told them as he leaned over and kissed Tisha on the cheek. "I knew the first time I saw her she was the one for me."
"And I you, my love. If you hadn't started courting me, I was going to give some hints to get you interested."
"You two make a great couple."
"The food is very good Tisha," Ice commented as they started eating.
"Thank Sam for some of it. He gave me a couple of different ideas in preparing it."
"You did good Sammy," Dean praised him, bumping his body against his brothers.
"I was just helping out," Sam mumbled shyly as he dropped his gaze. "Tisha did the major work here. She's the one who should get the praise."
"It was a combined effort," Tisha insisted smiling warmly at Sam. "And I didn't thank you for entertaining Dean here. It made things go a lot faster and easier."
"It was fun. He's a sweet kid."
"Of course, he is," Dean beamed with pride. "He takes after his uncle."
Sam choked on what he was drinking, and Dean had to pound him on the back to help him out.
"Are you okay Sam?" Titus asked, not sure if he should do anything or not.
"Yeah…" Sam wheezed as he coughed and cleared his throat while wiping his watery eyes. "It went down the wrong way," he offered giving Dean a sour look.
"So, you'll be heading out in the morning?" Titus asked.
"Yeah, we need to get the horses back to Ice's friend and then we go home," Dean replied.
"I wish you could stay longer, but I know you want to get back."
"We'd like to stay longer too, but we have family waiting for us and need to get back into the game. The monsters aren't going away since we've been gone."
"I understand. You have obligations and loved ones waiting on you." Titus sighed softly already missing his friends. "You know you're family to us and if ever you should find yourselves back in our world, you will always be welcome."
"I appreciate that, and we feel the same way. Family don't end in blood, as our adopted father once said," Dean told Titus. "We will come if needed again."
"I hope you are saving room for pie Dean. I made several just for you," Tisha told him.
"Be still my beating heart," Dean swooned to be awarded by giggles from her. "Of course, I have room for pie."
"Don't get my brother started on his obsession for pie," Sam snickered and dodged a playful slap from Dean. He pulled out his camera and snapped some pictures to finish the roll off. He couldn't wait to get them developed and see them.
Little Dean suddenly screamed to get everyone's attention as he babbled and smacked at the table.
"See, even my namesake wants pie," Dean laughed as the others joined in.
Tisha gave him a piece of fruit to eat so he'd settle down. She passed him to Titus so she could eat without fighting him for her food.
"Settle down son, everyone knows you're here," Titus told him as he took a cloth to wipe his hands and face.
Little Dean wiggled and squirmed until he was able to slide from Titus' lap and used the table to hold onto as he made his way to Sam and whined, reaching for him. Sam smiled down at the baby and picked him up settling him in his lap.
"Can he have a bite of mashed potatoes?"
"Yes, if he's still hungry. I feed him what we eat but mash it for him."
"You do have an appetite buddy," Sam cooed to him. He used a spoon to feed little Dean a few bites of potatoes watching him smack his lips and stick his fist into his mouth. "He has your table manners," Sam teased Dean as he wiped the baby's face.
"B'te m'," Dean mumbled around a mouth of food.
"See, what did I tell you," Sam insisted pointing to Dean.
They finished their meal with large slices of apple and berry pie. Dean and Ice insisted on cleaning the dishes since Tisha and Sam cooked. Once everything was cleaned and put up, they sat on the back porch to enjoy the ending of the day. Dean had the rocking chair and was rocking his namesake as he hummed softly to him. It wasn't long before the baby was asleep and cuddled in his arms.
Sam had used a disposable camera to snap some photos to remember their visit and to take photos of Titus and his family. He fought to stay awake now that he was full and still. He yawned widely and blinked rapidly as he tried to listen to the conversation.
"Sammy, why don't you head on to the barn and get ready for bed?" Dean told him. "We'll be along shortly too."
"Okay," Sam sighed getting up to leave. "Goodnight, everyone. See you in the morning."
"Let me take him and put him to bed," Tisha offered picking up her son and taking him inside to put to bed. "Ty, I'm going to go on to bed too."
"Alright honey, I'll be along shortly," Titus answered.
"You go to bed when you're ready Ty," Dean told him. "I just want to enjoy the evening a little more before heading that way myself."
"Are you guys sure the barn is okay to sleep in?"
"It's luxury digs to some of the places we've slept in over the years. It'll be fine."
"Alright then, I am going to head to bed. Still getting used to sleeping through the night again."
"We'll see you in the morning."
Titus went inside and Dean and Ice stayed on the porch watching the stars pop out and the moons come up. The noises were different now since they were back in civilization. They remained for another hour before getting up and heading for the barn to get some rest. Sam had left a lantern burning for them and he had rolled out their sleeping bags for them.
Dean moved his bag, so Sam was between them without even thinking about it. It was instinct ingrained in him that he had to protect Sam. Ice put the light out and then settled down to sleep knowing morning would be there before they knew it.

"You guys know I hate to say goodbye, but it's time for us to head out," Dean told Titus, Tisha, and little Dean. "You take care and I'll be thinking about you guys." Dean pulled Titus into a bear hug, holding him tightly for a moment before letting go. He hugged Tisha and kissed her cheek and kissed little Dean on the head. Dean blinked back the tears and smiled.
"It was nice meeting everyone," Sam said. He started to shake hands with Titus but was surprised when he grabbed him in a hug and after a second hugged him back. "Take care of each other." He gave Tisha a brief hug and kissed little Dean as he ruffled his hair.
"I hope you have a safe journey back," Titus told them as they mounted their horses.
"I'll stop back by in a few weeks to check on you guys," Ice told Titus.
"We'll be looking for you."
With one final salute farewell, the three travelers nudged their horses and rode away from the farm. It was a sad occasion, but a happy one too. Titus was reunited with his family, and they were able to visit and see the kind of man he grew up to be.
It seemed the horses knew they were going home and seemed anxious to get there. They only stopped once at a stream to water the horses and munch on bread and cheese before heading out again.
It was almost evening when Zorth's farm came into view. They rode into the yard and met Zorth coming from the barn. He greeted them and offered a meal, but the brothers wanted to finish their journey. They left the horses and walked into a stand of trees a mile from the farm so Ice could perform the ritual of opening the portal so they could go home.
"Ice, take care and here's some things you can keep," Dean offered. "This is a flint you can use for fire in case you don't have matches. Keep the pack and sleeping bag and blankets. They might come in useful on your travels. Oh, and I had a couple of these left too." Dean pulled out three mini bottles of whiskey and handed them to Ice.
"Keep the first aid kit in case you need it," Sam offered pulling it from his pack. "And keep the cookware to use."
"I am grateful for your help and the gifts. Safe journey home," Ice told the brothers. They did a brotherly hug and handshake before he stepped to a small area and drew sigils on the ground. He pulled the leather bag out and shook the magic powder into his hand. Ice began to speak the words for the spell in his native tongue and tossed the powder over the sigils.
The brothers watched as the powder seemed to hang in the air before it began to shimmer and softly glow, making a large circle. Once it stopped, they gave a final salute and Dean grabbed Sam's arm and they walked into the vibrating, swirling mass, disappearing. A few minutes later the portal was gone, and Ice headed back to Zorth's for the night.

"Man, I hate the woozy feeling that gives me," Dean complained as he stepped into the cave. He rummaged for a flashlight and turned it on so they could make their way to the entrance.
"It's almost as bad as angel transportation," Sam huffed as he let the lightheadedness pass before trying to walk.
"I'm guessing Cas will know we're back and…"
"I am here," Castiel said after appearing at the entrance to the cave. "I hope all went well." He quickly looked them over and felt the healed injury on Sam but didn't say anything.
"Hey man, it's good to be home." Dean gave him a quick hug and stepped back to look at his world.
"Hi Cas." Sam hugged him too making the angel smile warmly. He liked the family that had adopted him.
"Bobby is waiting for us, shall we go?"
Before they could answer, Castiel placed a hand on each of the brothers' shoulders and transported them to the living room of Bobby's house. He held on to them until they got their balance and stepped back as Bobby stepped from the kitchen.
"Boys, it's good to have you home," Bobby greeted them, wrapping an arm around each of them and hugging tightly as tears sprang to his eyes. "Almost don't recognize you with the extra hair," he teased patting their bearded faces.
"It's good to be home," Dean said. "How long were we gone?"
"Over a month. I was starting to worry a little, but Cas reminded me that time was different between the worlds. It helped some."
"Excuse the smell Bobby," Sam offered. "We didn't get to bath very much over there."
"Are you hungry? I can have Cas go get some food if you like."
"What I want is a nice hot shower and to sleep in my bed," Sam sighed.
"Yeah, me too. I'm bushed," Dean agreed. "We'll tell you all about the journey and everything tomorrow if you don't mind."
"It's fine son, you go on and get some rest. I'll still be here tomorrow."
"Wait until we get our pictures developed and you see them. I got to meet Dean's dragon, Black Beauty," Sam gushed excitedly.
"He was the babysitter," Dean snickered. "C'mon bro, let's shower and hit the sack. We'll see you guys in the morning."
"Goodnight Bobby, Cas, see you in the morning," Sam said. "You want a shower first since you don't take as long?"
"Yeah, I don't have as much to wash. I'll leave you a little hot water."
"Better be more than that jerk."
"Don't be a bitch about it. You offered."
Bobby and Castiel watched the brothers head up the stairs as they continued the banter.
"It's good to have them home," Bobby sighed with relief.
"I agree."
"I've got some paperwork to finish before heading to bed. Are you hanging around here tonight?"
"I have a couple errands to run but I will be here in the morning. Goodnight Bobby."
"Night Cas."
They went their separate ways, both happy that the brothers had returned.
