Harvey let the hot water wash over his body while he let his mind catch up with everything that had just happened. He knew Donna would keep things quiet for as long as he needed, but he also knew it wasn't realistic to keep this a secret much longer. Louis would be suspicious, and the firm needed him now more than ever. He needed to start thinking about daycares, schedules, and how he was going to make this all work. He took in a deep breath and tried to stop the panic from overcoming him; taking a few extra minutes to himself while he had it.
…
Donna stared into Rosie's brown eyes while she struggled to process everything Harvey had just told her. Her heart was broken for the little girl she held in her arms, and she'd be lying if she said she wasn't scared for her friend and this curveball that was thrown at him. She meant what she said about Harvey being a great dad; there were very few things he didn't excel at – but she knew his complicated family history and the pressure that he was already putting on himself in this new role.
Allowing herself to explore her own emotions, she internalized a quick what the fuck am I doing holding Harvey Specter's baby? This was going to take some getting used to. And what that was she didn't even know. How would this change his role at the office? He had bigger responsibilities than the firm. There wasn't a doubt in her mind that he would put Rosie first; but where would that leave the rest of them?
Before her thoughts progressed further, Rosie started to stir in her arms, giving Donna a teary-eyed pout that caused her to spring into action.
"Hey sweet girl, it's okay," she whispered as she stood up and started to walk Rosie around. "Your dad will be right back, I promise."
Dad. Woof, she was going to have to get used to that.
Rosie, unmoved by Donna's consolation, motioned towards the plate that formerly held her objectionable breakfast and let out another whine.
"Oh yeah I bet you're hungry; let's see what we can find you." She moved Rosie to her left hip and made her way to the kitchen.
Jeez, Harvey, she thought to herself as she combed through his baren refrigerator and cabinets. She made a mental note to sign him up for a weekly grocery delivery service. Finding a single banana in a fruit bowl, she rolled her eyes thinking about everything he was in for.
Delighted with this new prospect, Rosie grabbed at the banana with excited babbles.
"Easy there," Donna said as she held the banana away from her grabby hands, "can you sit here for me while I cut this up?"
Rosie gave Donna a big smile as she placed her on top of the counter, making sure she didn't immediately try to crawl away. Donna grabbed a fork and a plate and began to cut up the banana into small pieces, while Rosie watched intently, sitting perfectly still observing her work.
"You're being so patient, sweetie," Donna smiled to the little girl who smiled back. "Alright, here you go." She put the plate in front of Rosie who eagerly grabbed a fistful of bananas and shoved them into her mouth, but mostly across her face.
With Rosie busy with her snack, Donna turned to make a pot of coffee. In addition to the food in places it shouldn't be – she smiled to herself thinking about the strawberries - she could tell right away that Harvey hadn't had coffee yet. Pouring two cups, each with a splash of vanilla, Donna turned her attention back to the little girl attempting to feed herself. Noticing Rosie was getting more food on her face than in her mouth, she grabbed the fork, scooped up some banana, and delivered it promptly into a very open and anxious little mouth.
…
Harvey dressed himself in jeans and a quarter zip, and took a deep breath as he braced for his return to reality.
Every bit of stress he was holding melted when he emerged from his room and looked at the scene taking place in his kitchen.
Rosie was sitting on his island countertop, eagerly awaiting a mouthful of bananas from Donna, giggling as she made airplane noises, spooning the anticipated goods into her mouth. In return, Rosie held out a fistful of banana as if to share with Donna, who graciously accepted in the form of a big fake bite; both girls giggling, as they repeated the give and take until the last of the banana had been devoured.
He couldn't tell if it was because of the hot shower or because of what he was watching, but Harvey felt warm. It was the first time he didn't feel so alone in all of this.
…
Donna could feel him watching them out of the corner of her eye. Before she had enough time to let herself get flustered, she scooped Rosie up off the counter, placing her back on her left hip, and grabbed one of the mugs of coffee in her other hand as she moved towards Harvey, who was still leaning up against the door frame watching everything unfold.
"Feeling better?" she asked, as she handed him the cup of coffee.
Harvey swallowed hard at the sight of Donna with Rosie propped casually on her hip, like the two of them had been doing this forever. "A little," he managed to get out. "You didn't have to –"
"Stop, Harvey," Donna pushed back. "I'm here for you. Both of you," she said as she got another big smile from the little girl snuggled up against her. "And when you're ready to share her with the others, they'll be here for you too. We're a family." She didn't know what made her say the last part out loud, but it was true. They had been through so much; surely they could all handle a baby together.
Harvey rolled his eyes, trying to deflect from the tone of her comments, as he placed a kiss on Rosie's forehead. "Sorry kid, you know what they say, 'you can't pick your family;' you're in for a treat with these weirdos."
"Hey! We're doing just fine so far," Donna quipped, as she pulled Rosie away defensively.
"She has banana in her hair."
"She's a baby; it's cute."
"Funny, I don't remember it bothering you when I –"
"Do not even think about finishing that sentence."
Harvey gave her a smirk as he snatched Rosie out of her arms and walked over to the couch.
Donna gathered herself and followed, grabbing the other cup of coffee from the kitchen.
Harvey placed Rosie down on her blanket and took a seat opposite Donna.
After a few moments of silence, Harvey looked up at her; her eyes closely watching Rosie on the ground in front of her.
"Hey," he said softly.
"Hey yourself," she retorted, not sure where this was going.
"Thank you for being here this morning; I know you have things to do at the office so please don't feel like you have to stay –"
"Harvey," she cut in, "We have just as much work to do here as we do at the firm, and right now, this is more important."
"Donna, I'm not asking you –"
"I know, Harvey," she stopped him. "But you need to focus on Rosie, and we can worry about the rest on Monday."
Harvey gave her a soft, tired smile. "There are so many things I have to get -"
"Well luckily I happen to have a PhD in buying things with your credit card." Donna quipped as she scooped up Rosie who had crawled her way over to her.
Harvey couldn't even push back while he looked at the two of them together. He knew he was in deep, deep trouble.
"Do you have a list?" Donna questioned as she held Rosie closer.
"When she was sleeping earlier I managed to put in an order for one of the best made cribs in the city, thanks to an old client, but I know there are things that I can't even begin to think of that she needs," he said, half defeated.
Donna turned her attention to the little girl snuggled up in her lap and whispered, just loud enough for Harvey to hear, "Sounds to me like daddy is taking us on our first shopping trip, baby girl," she winked over at him, the look on his face causing her to fight back a laugh. "Don't worry," she tickled Rosie who let out a happy squeal, "I'll show you how it's done."
