A/N: Here's part two. I hope I did this chapter justice, considering its sad content.
Enjoy :)
DON'T ASK IF I'M OKAY
"Here comes the rain again, falling from the stars.
Drenched in my pain again, becoming who we are.
As my memory rests, but never forgets what I lost.
Wake me up when September ends."
– Green Day: 'Wake Me Up When September Ends' (American Idiot [2004])
Corridor
The Doctor remains behind to check on the blast door, giving Jake some more instructions.
"Jake, check the stairwell! The rest of you, come on!" He tears off down the corridor, with the others following at his heels. Mickey runs up to him, looking apologetic, and still shaking his burning hand.
"I just fell, I didn't mean it!" He tells the Doctor.
"Mickey, without us, they'd have opened it by force," the Doctor reassures him. "To do that, they'd have blown up the sun. You've done us a favour." He presses a hasty, thankful kiss to Mickey's head before shoving him to get moving. "Now, run!"
Jackie runs along a nearby corridor but finds herself trapped between two squads of Cybermen on the stairs. She backtracks and turns into a different corridor, only to come face to face with two more.
"You will be upgraded!" one of the Cybermen tells Jackie, who cringes away, tears welling up in her already red eyes from crying over Katy's death, as she pleads for her life.
"No, but you can't. Please!" She half-sobbed, half-pleaded; not wishing to suffer the same fate as her daughter. Jackie's eyes widened when the Cybermen are shot down from behind unexpectedly. The smoke clears, revealing Pete; holding up a large black gun, which he had used to blow away the Cybermen. Behind him were the Doctor, Rose, Mickey, Jake, and the other commandoes who had come along with Jake. "Pete?"
"Hello, Jacks!" Pete greets Jackie with a small smile. But instead of being overjoyed to see him, Jackie instead, whines.
"I said there were ghosts, but that's not fair! Why him?"
"I'm not a ghost," Pete points out, looking slightly put out by the reaction Jackie had upon seeing him.
"But you're dead. You died twenty years ago, Pete." Jackie protested. The Doctor stepped forward to Pete's side to help explain the situation to Jackie, who immediately glowers at him.
"It's Pete from a different universe," He explained. "There are parallel worlds, Jackie. Every single decision we make creates a parallel existence, a different dimension where—"
"Oh, you can shut up!" Jackie snaps at him, and the Doctor wisely shut up and took a step back. Jackie scrutinises Pete with sad eyes. "Oh, you look old."
"You don't," Pete responded, sincerely.
"How can you be standing there?" Jackie questioned him, looking very bewildered.
"I just got lucky. Lived my life," Pete confirmed. "You were left on your own. You didn't marry again, or…?"
"There was never anyone else," Jackie was quick to reassure him. "Twenty years, though. Look at me. I never left that flat. Did nothing with myself…"
"Ah, but you brought them up; Rose and…" Pete cut himself off, reminded of the loss of Katy and glanced over at a weepy Rose and Mickey, and even at the Doctor who was stubbornly trying to save face. "Well, that's not bad."
"Yeah," Jackie conceded, staring at the floor.
Pete changed the subject.
"In my world, it worked. All those daft little plans of mine, they worked." Jackie looked surprised. "Made me rich."
"I don't care about that," Jackie dismissed. But then… "How rich?"
"Very," Pete smirked, pleased that Jackie hadn't really changed that much.
"I don't care about that," Jackie insisted. But then… "How very?"
"Thing is though, Jacks, you're not my wife. I'm sorry, but you're not." Pete explained, and Jackie nodded, understanding. "I mean, we both… you know, it's just sort of…" Pete stammered, but gave in. "Oh, come here!"
Jackie whimpered and ran straight at Pete and jumps into his arms after he puts down the gun. The Doctor had to look away, his fists clenching and unclenching in his grief and anger. Rose noticed this, and reached out to take his hand to comfort him, when…
"Mum!?"
All heads snapped up and in the direction of the extremely familiar voice and saw a figure running full pelt down the corridor towards them. The commandoes all aimed their guns … until the figure came closer and revealed:
"Katy!?" Jackie exclaimed, in sheer disbelief. "Oh, my God! You're alive!" She immediately breaks away from Pete and rushes towards her. But she stops dead in her tracks when she takes in Katy's condition, and pales dramatically. "Oh, God… oh, God… oh, God! What did they do to you?"
Katy was covered head to toe in blood from when she had slipped over in the thick puddles of freshly spilt blood when the Cyberman had unexpectedly released her. But the traumatised girl barely noticed this; she was more relieved that she had finally caught up to her mother, and her bottom lip started quivering.
"Mummy…" She whimpered and folded into Jackie's arms. The older blonde tightly wrapped her arms around her child, ignoring the fact that blood was staining her clothes.
"Oh, sweetheart! It's okay, I'm here. You're safe now!" Jackie cooed. Katy clung desperately to Jackie and barely registered when two other bodies suddenly appeared and engulfed the both of them in a hug as well. The moment Rose and Mickey saw Katy fall into Jackie's arms, did they break away from the group, run past a relieved but concerned looking Pete, and join in the hug with Jackie and Katy.
"You're alive! Oh, thank God!" Rose sobbed, with relief.
"Don't scare us like that again!" Mickey scolded Katy, sternly.
The Doctor was stunned; unsure that he was actually seeing his girlfriend alive in front of his eyes. Which was why he hadn't reacted at first. But gradually, an overjoyed smile spreads across his face.
"Katy…" He muttered, and the girl in question raised her head, looking for the person who had called out her name, and focused on the Doctor. She gently pulls away from her mother, sister, and Mickey, and heads towards the Doctor; slowly at first, but then at full speed before jumping into his arms and wrapping her legs around his waist when he caught her and held her close. "You're alive! Oh, God, I thought you were dead!"
Katy's reply to that was to kiss him full on the lips; and the Doctor responded passionately. Rose's eyes widened in shock as she followed where her sister was running to, and they narrow in jealous fury when Katy jumps into the Doctor's arms and embrace. She took one step forward but was pulled back almost immediately. Rose looked back in anger, only to see a stern look on Mickey's face.
"Don't even think about it," Mickey warned.
"Let go of me!" Rose snaps.
"Enough!" Jackie growls, sternly. "We will discuss this later!" She stated, looking at her eldest with a determination. Thinking back on this later on, Jackie would acknowledge that this probably wasn't the best way for Rose to finally learn the truth, but what was done was done; they could now move on.
Warehouse
Torchwood was in chaos. An all-out war had broken out between the Daleks and the Cybermen, with the Torchwood Security joining in to attempt to corral the violence. In the Warehouse, the Cult of Skaro burst through the door, guns blazing.
"EXTERMINATE!"
"Delete. Delete." The Cybermen return fire.
"Get down!" a Torchwood soldier warns as they add to the fighting. It was obvious that the Cybermen had no chance of winning as the Daleks glide through, carrying the Genesis Ark behind them.
"Emergency. All units will converge on the Torchwood Tower. Repeat. All Cybermen to Torchwood," The Cyberleader alerts reinforcements and the Cybermen lurking the streets of London start marching, leaving the bewildered humans alone. Meanwhile, the Doctor looks carefully inside the warehouse, then after temporarily leaving a clingy, emotionally compromised Katy in the care of Jackie, he army crawls over to a crate and grabs a pair of Magnaclamps before dodging laser fire to get back.
"Come on, please!" Rose yells desperately at the Doctor to come back safely, despite still being angry with him and Katy about the embrace from earlier. The Doctor makes it back safely, but not before quickly looking back in after once again wearing his 3D glasses.
"OVERRIDE ROOF MECHANISM!" Dalek Sek orders, and the overhead warehouse roof shutters started to retract to the sides. "ELEVATE!"
"What are they doing? Why do they need to get outside?" Rose was confused.
"Time Lord science," the Doctor responded, echoing the explanation the Daleks had given them back in the Sphere Laboratory. "What Time Lord science? What is it?" He mutters to himself as they all watch the Ark and Dalek Sek glide up and out into Canary Wharf.
"We've got to see what its doing. We've got to go back up," He takes Katy's hand and pulls her along. "Come on! All of you, top floor!" He urges.
"That's forty-five floors up!" Jackie exclaimed. "Believe me, I've done them all."
"So did I…" Katy mumbles, and the Doctor squeezes her hand sympathetically. A nearby elevator door opens and Jake steps out, grinning like the cat that caught the canary.
"We could always take the lift…" He suggested.
Yvonne's Office
They make it to the top floor and run for Yvonne's office. Once inside, the Doctor makes a beeline for the window with Katy, just in time for them to see the Ark opening and shooting out Daleks in all directions as it spins like a top. The Doctor's face hardens, while Katy's eyes widen in horror.
"Time Lord science," He explains to Katy, Mickey, and Rose who had come over to see for themselves. "It's bigger on the inside."
"Did the Time Lords put those Daleks in there? What for?" Mickey questioned, looking horrified.
"It's a prison ship," the Doctor stated darkly.
"How many Daleks?" Rose mutters obviously stunned by what she was seeing.
"Looks like millions of them," Katy breathed.
The Daleks spread out over London as Cybermen clomp their way through the streets before stopping and shooting into the sky at the Daleks. Pete walks over to investigate for himself, and a sympathetic but resolute expression crosses his face as he addresses the Doctor.
"I'm sorry, but you've had it. This world's going to crash and burn. There's nothing we can do. We're going home," Pete takes another yellow medallion from a nearby commando and heads over to Jackie. "Jacks, take this. You're coming with us."
"But they're destroying the city!" Jackie protests, earning an affectionate, but exasperated look from Pete.
"I'd forgotten you could argue," He stated fondly as he loops the medallion over her head. "It's not just London, it's the whole world. But there's another world just waiting for you, Jacks. And it's safe as long as the Doctor closes the breach." He turns his head in the Doctor's direction, looking at him enquiringly. "Doctor?"
The Doctor turns to face them all, a giant grin on his face and wearing his 3D glasses as he walks over to them. Katy follows behind, hugging herself around the middle; still very quiet after her ordeal, but nevertheless paying attention.
"Oh, I'm ready!" He declares. "I've got the equipment right here," The Doctor gestures towards the Magnaclamps and the various computer terminals. "Thank you, Torchwood." He uses a nearby computer terminal. "Slam it down and close off both universes."
"Reboot systems." The computer announces. But Rose frowns, obviously not liking the plan the Doctor was attempting to put together; seeing it as an impossible task considering that they were currently being invaded by millions of warring Daleks and Cybermen.
"But we can't just leave. What about the Daleks? And the Cybermen?" She points out, but the Doctor brushes aside her concerns.
"They're part of the problem, and that makes them part of the solution." The Doctor counters. Everyone except for Katy and Rose, who were used to the Doctor's antics by now, frowned at him with confusion. "Well, isn't anyone going to ask what is it with the glasses?"
"Well, now that you mention it…" Katy speaks up, smiling a little.
"What is it with the glasses?" Rose humours him.
"I can see, that's what," the Doctor explains, taking a seat next to Katy who was leaning on a nearby desk. "Because we've got two separate worlds, but in between the two separate worlds, we've got the Void. That's where the Daleks were hiding. And the Cybermen travelled through the Void to get here. And you lot," he gestures to Pete, Mickey, Jake and the commandoes. "One world to another, via the Void. Oh, I like that. Via the Void. Look!" The Doctor takes off the 3D glasses and hands them to Katy, who frowns but puts them on and gasps in surprise at what she sees when she looks at the Doctor.
"What the hell?" She blurts out.
"I've been through it. Do you see?" The Doctor asks her, and Katy hesitated.
"I'm not really sure what I'm looking at to be honest," she admitted honestly.
"Reboot in three minutes…" the computer warns just as Rose frowns and holds out her hand for the glasses to see for herself. Katy complies, and the blonde puts them on.
"Woah, what is this?" Rose questioned. What both Katy and Rose had seen were lots of speckles hovering in the air around the Doctor.
"Void stuff," the Doctor confirmed.
"Like er, background radiation?" Rose asked, and the Doctor nodded.
"That's it. Look at the others," Rose turns and looks at everyone else, and notes that they had the speckles floating around them, except for Jackie. "And the only one who hasn't been through the Void, your mother. First time she's looked normal all in her life." He joked, as Jackie glowers at him.
"Oi!" She protested.
"But the Daleks lived inside the Void," the Doctor continued. "They're bristling with it. Cybermen, all of them. I just open the Void and reverse. The Void stuff gets sucked back inside."
"Pulling them all in!" Rose cheers, joyfully. As Katy stiffens, suddenly understanding where the Doctor was heading with this explanation and lowers her head looking extremely upset.
"Pulling them all in," the Doctor agrees, a little less enthusiastic than Rose. He had spotted Katy's reaction and felt his hearts break a little when he realised she had figured it out.
"Sorry, what's the Void?" Mickey asked.
"The Dead Space," the Doctor replied. "Some people call it Hell," He added, and Mickey immediately grinned.
"So, you're sending the Daleks and Cybermen to Hell," He turns towards Pete and Jake, triumphantly. "I told you he was good!"
"But it's like you said. We've all got Void stuff. Me too, because we went to that parallel world," Rose pointed out, and looked down at her arm; seeing the flying speckles and then over at Katy who was also covered in them too. "We're all contaminated. We'll get pulled in!"
"That's why you've got to go…" the Doctor stated, solemnly.
Rose took off the 3D glasses and looked at him, gobsmacked.
"Reboot in two minutes…" the Computer announced.
"You and your mother, back to Pete's World," The Doctor then momentarily brightened at that. "Hey, we should call it that. Pete's World." He grinned at Rose, but she doesn't return it, and the Doctor pretends he doesn't see it. "I'm opening the Void, but only on this side. You'll be safe on that side." He indicates to the white wall off in the distance, representing 'Pete's World'.
"And then you close it, for good?" Pete clarifies.
"The breach itself is soaked in Void Stuff. In the end it'll close itself. And that's it. Kaput," the Doctor confirmed.
"But you stay on this side?" Rose stated.
"But you'll get pulled in," Mickey points out. The Doctor runs over to a nearby desk with some familiar objects resting on top of it.
"But that's why I got these," He holds up one of the Magnaclamps briefly before setting it down again. "We'll just have to hold on tight. I've been doing it all my life—"
"Hold on, we?" Rose interrupts, as the Doctor immediately sobers, knowing what was about to happen next. "As in you and…?"
"Katy. Yes." The Doctor confirms and Katy looks up and focuses on both him and Rose, who immediately glares at both of them.
"I'm supposed to go, but not her?!" Rose was furious.
"Yeah," the Doctor confirmed once again, narrowing his eyes slightly.
"To another world, and then it gets sealed off?"
"That's what I said, yeah." The Doctor nods, and Rose fumed; absolutely enraged that her sister was going to be staying on this side of the Void with the Doctor, and she (Rose) had no say in it?
"Forever. Yeah, that's not going to happen," Rose stated, determined.
"Rose…" The Doctor attempted to reason with the blonde, but the building chose that moment to shake violently. Pete immediately took charge now that the Doctor had finished revealing his plan.
"We haven't got time to argue. The plan works. We're going. You are too. All of us," Pete orders, sternly.
"No, I'm not leaving!" Rose argued stubbornly.
"And I'm not leaving without Rose!" Jackie piped up, and Pete groaned exasperatedly.
"Oh, my God. We're going!" He growls, and Jackie spins on him, gesturing angrily.
"I've had twenty years without you, so button it. I'm not leaving without her!" Rose was incredulous; was Jackie seriously siding with the Doctor about Katy staying here with him?
"You've got to. Besides why aren't you making Katy come with us too?!" Rose protested, and Jackie let out a long-suffering sigh.
"Because Katy is supposed to stay here, love. She doesn't belong where we're going."
"But I do?! Why does Katy need to stay here?" Rose insisted. This time, it was the Doctor who intervened, finally fed up with Rose's temper tantrums.
"Because I want her here!" He yells, and Rose stares at him with shock. "Rose, I'm sorry, but Katy and I are in a relationship, and we have been for a very long time." He set her straight. "Plus, Katy has a secret that requires her to remain here on this side of the Void, and I need to be there to help her with it!"
"What secret?" Rose whispered, tearful now that the Doctor had finally come clean.
"One that I cannot share because it's not mine to reveal," the Doctor stated firmly. Rose was silent for several minutes, looking between her sister and the man she considered the love of her life, whom had been in a secret relationship with said sister all this time. But eventually she came to a decision.
"I'm still not going!" Rose was stubborn.
"Well, that's tough!" Jackie stated firmly. "I'm sorry, Rose. But it's time to accept this and move on with your life, which means you need to come with us."
"Mum…" Rose swallowed hard.
"Reboot in one minute…" the computer reminds them all.
"I've had a life with you for nineteen years, but then I met the Doctor, and all the things I've seen him do for me, for you, for all of us. For the whole stupid planet and every planet out there. He does it alone, mum. But not anymore, because now he's got … us." Rose explains, indicating between herself and Katy, not noticing the grimace on her sister's face.
During the entire explanation Rose was giving to Jackie, the Doctor exchanges a stoic look with a very tearful Katy, withdraws the yellow medallion Jake had given to him, and slowly walks up behind Rose. At the last second, the Doctor loops the medallion around Rose's neck.
"What're you—" Rose turns to question the Doctor, but Pete presses his button, cutting Rose off. Katy promptly bursts into tears as the Doctor immediately comes over and tries to comfort her. However, seconds later, Rose reappears. "I think this is the on switch…" She commented, pulling the medallion off and throwing it aside, as the Doctor and Katy look at her in stunned shock.
Parallel Torchwood
The second after Rose vanishes, Jackie attempts to do the same. But Pete beats her to the punch and rips off her medallion before she could.
"But I've got to go back!" She protests anxiously.
"The Doctor said every time we use one of these, it damages the whole world. Now that's it!" Pete was firm, but Jackie couldn't understand this.
"She's your daughter!"
"She's your daughter, not mine. That's an order," Pete refused to back down as he takes the medallion Mickey holds out to him. Jackie's desperate eyes search out Mickey, who tried to avoid looking into hers, out of guilt.
"Mickey, tell him. Tell him, Mickey." He turns away, and Jackie is horrified. "Mickey!" Jackie immediately bursts into tears, and out of guilt, Pete comes over to comfort Jackie. But she shoves him away with an angry: "Get away from me!"
Lever Room
"Are you mad?" the Doctor was appalled by Rose's selfish behaviour. "Once the breach collapses, that's it. You will never be able to see her again. Your own mother!" The Doctor pointed out.
But Rose just looks at him calmly.
"I made my choice a long time ago, and I'm never going to leave you," Rose stated firmly, and Katy turned away out of despair. "So, what can I do to help?" The blonde asked, and the Doctor rakes a hand through his already messy hair out of frustration, just as the computer makes another announcement.
"Systems rebooted. Open access." The Doctor glares at Rose, but eventually caves and pointed her in the direction of one of the computer terminals.
"Those coordinates over there, set them all at six. And hurry up!" He growls at Rose, who frowns but does what she's told and goes over to the terminal. Katy pauses and steps away from the desk she had been leaning on per the Doctor's instructions to take it easy, since she was still exhausted both mentally and physically because of her ordeal, and cautiously approaches the Doctor, since he was unpredictable when he was in this mood.
"What are we going to do now?" She mutters to him, and he softens a little when he sees the timid look on Katy's face and realises that he had nearly lost his temper. "She may say that she's never going to leave you, but she will regret the choice in the long run. Rose needs to go back."
"I know," the Doctor agreed, looking over at Rose who was momentarily distracted by her task, unaware that she was being observed. "Don't worry, I'll think of something." He reassures Katy, then groans underneath his breath. "Rose really has bad timing…"
"We've got Cybermen on the way up!" Rose calls out from the terminal, and the Doctor's frown deepens.
"How many floors down?"
"Just one," Rose confirms warily, and the Doctor curses underneath his breath, realising he literally had no time to find a way to see the stubborn blonde back into Pete's World before the breach would be sealed.
"Levers operational." The computer announces. Rose aims a weak grin at the couple, obviously trying to bolster their spirits.
"That's more like it. Bit of a smile. The old team," She gestures between the three of them. The Doctor sighs heavily, and grabs Katy's hand, squeezing it. There wasn't anything they could do now; might as well make the most of it. He slaps on an equally fake grin and responds back to Rose.
"Yeah! The Three Musketeers, The Marx Brothers, The Three Stooges…" The Doctor rattled off famous trios, earning a snort from Katy about the last trio, and Rose glanced up curiously.
"Who's who?"
"Oh, I'm Moe," the Doctor responded with a mock-serious tone. "Katy's Curly, and you're Larry!"
"Hey!" Rose protested as the Doctor hands her one of the Magnaclamps, and they put them on the walls by the levers.
"Press the red button!" the Doctor instructs Rose, who does so. "When it starts, just hold on tight. Shouldn't be too bad for us, but the Daleks and the Cybermen are steeped in Void Stuff." He grabs Katy's hand and pulls her over to one of the Magnaclamps. "Hold on tight, and don't let go for anything." He urges Katy who nods and wraps her arms around the metal bar of the Magnaclamp, as the Doctor turns back to Rose who was standing opposite them, looking rather impatient. "Are you two ready?"
"Yes!" Katy confirmed.
"So are they," Rose points out a couple of Daleks who were hovering outside the window.
"Let's do it!" the Doctor shouts with determination and both he and Rose push the levers up. They immediately scramble to grab their Magnaclamps, with the Doctor wrapping his arms around Katy to hold her securely to himself and the Magnaclamp too.
"Online."
A bright light comes out of the breach and a strong wind rushes into it, sucking the first Daleks through the windows and into itself. The Doctor, Katy, and Rose are instantly lifted off their feet, as they cling for dear life to the Magnaclamps.
"EMERGENCY!" the Daleks shriek helplessly, and all three of them shout out in gleeful triumph.
"The breach is open! Into the Void! Ha!" the Doctor cheers.
Cybermen all over the world are lifted off their feet and into the air. Soon there is a steady stream of Daleks and Cybermen all being sucked through the one broken window into the Void. Then all of a sudden, Rose's lever starts moving a little.
"Offline."
The suction starts to decrease, and Rose shoots the Doctor and Katy a look of panic. She realises that she needed to let go of the Magnaclamp to grab the lever and pull it back up, but she and the lever were being pulled the wrong way.
Katy's eyes widen in horror.
"Rose, be careful!" Katy shouts over the rushing wind to be heard. Rose lets go of the Magnaclamp and grabs onto the lever but has to throw her entire weight on it to push it up; and it's not an easy task.
"I've got to get it upright!" She grunts in desperation. Finally, Rose manages to push it up.
"Online and locked." The suction builds up once again. But this time Rose is in trouble and is unable to get back to the Magnaclamp safely.
"Rose, hold on! Hold on!" the Doctor urges as both he and Katy watch in horror, unable to lend the blonde any aid. Rose is being pulled horizontally towards the Void and she tries desperately to hold onto the lever tightly with both hands. But the suction is too powerful. Rose's fingers finally slip from the lever handle.
"ROSE!" the Doctor and Katy scream, and they watch her being pulled further and further away from them towards the Void. But at the last possible minute, Pete suddenly pops in and catches Rose. The blonde manages to look back at the Doctor and her sister briefly before she and Pete vanish into thin air. The wind dies down, and the Void closes itself off.
"Systems closed." The computer announces, and almost immediately Katy pulls out of the Doctor's protective grip and runs at the White Wall.
"No. No! Rose! Rose! Rosie!" She starts hammering against the wall, unaware that in Pete's World, Rose is doing the exact same thing, but shouting for the Doctor instead of her sister. "Bring her back! Please! Bring Rose back! Please! Please…"
Katy slides down the wall, sobbing inconsolably. She had lost her sister, and her mother, and Mickey.
She was never going to see them again.
Katy was barely aware of her surroundings, too caught up by the fact that for the second time in her life, her family had been ripped away from her. First time was apparently back on Gallifrey, when she was sent through the Untempered Schism by her aunt to save her life, seconds before the planet was destroyed, and now? Both her adoptive mother, sister and best friend were trapped in an alternate universe, out of her reach.
Forever.
Strong arms wrapped around her, clinging to her desperately and gently, and she was lifted off the floor and away from the wall and into a protective hug. The warm familiar scent of the Doctor camped out in her nose, overpowering the strong metallic smell of the blood she had covered all over her, and she sagged into him, sobbing into his chest and clinging desperately to him too. The Doctor buried his face into Katy's hair, and also let out a full-bodied shudder as he mourned the loss of Rose too. Neither of them were quite sure how long they sat there, before the Doctor, with Katy still cradled protectively in his arms, stands up and walks away.
The Tardis
The Doctor carries Katy back to where the Tardis had been kept by the Torchwood personnel; the brunette having long since cried herself to sleep out of both exhaustion and grief. The Tardis opens up the second the Doctor approached her door, and the Doctor gives the ship a surprised but grateful smile, before he shoulders his way through the threshold, and the door shuts automatically behind him, locking on its own with a firm click.
The Doctor makes his way over to the jump seat and gently lays Katy down on it, before he turns and starts up the Tardis, sending them somewhere away from Canary Wharf, and sets her adrift in the Time Vortex. He then turns back to Katy and crouches down beside the jump seat, gently smoothing back her hair from her face, and coaxing her awake.
"Doctor?" Katy mumbles.
"I'm right here," He responded, a weak smile on his face. "How are you feeling?"
"Tired," Katy replies, frowning a little. "Where are we?" She questioned him.
"Inside the Tardis. We're currently drifting in the Time Vortex, right now," The Doctor confirms, and Katy nods and sits up, grimacing at herself as she pulls the still blood-stained jumper she was wearing and looks down at it.
"I gotta go clean up,"
"Right after I check you over for any injuries," the Doctor stated firmly. "I'm ashamed that I didn't do that sooner. You must have lost a lot of blood…"
"Don't be. We had more important things to worry about at the time," Katy set him straight. "Besides, I'm fine. This isn't my blood." She reassures him, and the Doctor's eyes narrowed.
"Still, I'd like to make sure you haven't caught any infections from being drenched in other people's blood," He insisted, and Katy reluctantly nodded, taking the Doctor's hand when he offers it to her and allowing him to lead her through the corridor towards the Tardis's infirmary.
Sanctuary Room
A few hours later, the Doctor had given his girlfriend a clean bill of health; making a point of sternly telling her that she was very lucky, considering the amount of blood she had been covered with. He then left her be, sensing that she wanted to be alone. But after a while, he craved her company and eventually found Katy sitting in the Sanctuary Room, which had been changed into an overcast day upon the White Cliffs of Dover overlooking a beautiful view of the ocean and its tumbling waves crashing against the rocks and ebbing and flowing endlessly.
She was sitting on a picnic rug, and as it was fairly breezy where they were, she was wearing a heavy looking jumper and a blanket wrapped around her shoulders for added warmth. A steaming cup of Cocoa was cradled in her hands, which Katy had obviously made in the Tardis kitchen before making the decision to come in here, and the brunette was just sitting and staring, deep in thought.
"May I join you?" the Doctor requested, looking at her with concern. Katy just smiled and lifted up the blanket, encouraging him to sit down beside her, and he sat down and graciously wrapped the blanket around his shoulders, despite not really feeling the cold, and pulled Katy closer. "This looks like a nice spot," the Doctor complimented Katy in her choice of scenery. "What made you pick it?"
"It's a good place to sit and think for a while. About things that have happened, plans that need to be made. Things like that. It's also good for remembering memories." Katy then grinned a little. "Like this one time … we were at Summer Camp, and Rose and I had just made some new friends: Amelia, she was seven at the time, a couple years younger than us. She kind of annoyed us a little, going on about this 'imaginary friend' she'd met during Easter a few months earlier. But she was really nice, so we overlooked that. And Rory, who was the same age as us. He had this really obvious crush on Amelia, and we kind of felt sorry for him because she was also really oblivious…"
The Doctor chuckled; because she was rambling worse than he did on any occasion, but he let her because it was obviously helping her in some way, and he was genuinely curious about her and Rose's childhood. He dropped a kiss onto her head, as she reminisces.
"Anyway, the four of us decided to go canoeing, so we split up into pairs, and Rose was paired up with Rory, and I was with Amelia. Neither of them were very good at keeping their boat upright; so, we were just paddling around, and Rory's hat blows off and lands in the water, and he leant over to try to grab it. Rose tells him to stop and tries to stop him. But instead, the canoe capsizes." Katy giggles, and the Doctor smirked; picturing the evil scowl that Rose was likely to have had on her face. "She was so pissed off."
"I imagine she would've been," the Doctor agreed. "Did you manage to keep in contact with Amelia and Rory?"
"Oh, yeah. On and off over the years, with the odd phone call and playdates, and meeting up somewhere for birthdays and the like. But we kind of lost contact after we met you, that day you blew up the shop..." The Doctor flushed a little and looked a bit sheepish. Katy giggles at him, but the laughter gradually petered off and she became solemn once again. "I'm really going to miss her, you know?"
"Well, I did have a reason for coming to find you. But it really depends on if you're up to it…" the Doctor hinted and Katy looked at him, curiously.
"What are you talking about?"
"Do you want to try and contact Rose; say goodbye?" The Doctor asks her, and Katy lit up for about two seconds before she instantly looked doubtful.
"Can you do that?"
"Well, I'm not promising anything. But I can give it a try, can't be too difficult." He gets to his feet and offers her his hand to help her up. She takes it, and quickly folds up both the picnic blanket and wool blanket with his help. "Shall we?" He offers her the crook of his arm, and Katy smiles and links arms with him, walking towards the entrance to the Sanctuary Room.
The Console Room
The duo race into the Console Room, both excited about the concept of seeing Rose again, albeit for perhaps the very last time. But they would savour that moment for the rest of their lives. The Doctor immediately drops Katy's hand and races around the console flicking switches, pushing buttons etc. while scanning the monitor for something.
"Come on!" He mutters impatiently, earning a frown from Katy who was clinging to the side of the console to stop from being tossed to the floor in the turbulence.
"What is it? What are you looking for?" Katy questioned.
"A nebula, or a supernova. Anything that we can use as fuel," the Doctor replies a little distractedly. He briefly looks up at her. "While I'm doing this, though, can you go find a picture of Rose? Just something that the Tardis can use to pinpoint her." He requests, and Katy nodded.
"A picture of Rose? Yeah, alright. I'll be back!" She turns and dashes down the staircase towards the lower corridors of the Tardis and races for her room. It didn't take long for her to reach it, due to the Tardis helpfully rearranging the rooms to bring it closer to the Console Room. She grinned up at the ceiling, gratefully. "Thank you, love!" She praises the ship.
"You're welcome!" the Tardis responded back.
It didn't take long for Katy to find what she was looking for: a photograph of a smiling and laughing Rose on one of their trips to a planet with a self-cleaning beach. She had been sunbathing on a beach towel, when Katy or the Doctor, she couldn't remember who, snapped a cheeky photo of the blonde. Thankfully, Rose wasn't annoyed that they had taken her picture without her permission.
"I got it!" Katy announced triumphantly, racing back up the stairs with the photo in her hand.
"Brilliant timing! I just found a supernova," the Doctor announced. "Put Rose's photo over here." He indicates to a spot on the console that Katy recognised as the same spot the Doctor had once put Auton Mickey's head, when the Doctor was trying to track down the Nestene Consciousness, back when he had first met Rose and her. "Now it shouldn't take long to pinpoint Rose's location, but just hang about for a while," The Doctor warns, and Katy nodded; not in any hurry to go anywhere any time soon.
The Doctor had been right; it did take a bit for the Tardis to locate Rose, and when she did, it took both of them calling out her name before a blurry holographic image of Rose suddenly appeared before them.
Rose frowned curiously.
"Where are you?" the blonde asked.
"Inside the Tardis," the Doctor responded, sadly. "There's one tiny little gap in the Universe left, just about to close, and it takes a lot of power to send this projection," He explained. "I'm in orbit around a supernova." He smiles wetly at Rose. "We're burning up a sun just to say goodbye."
"We? Is Katy there?" Rose asked, and the Doctor nodded and gestured for Katy come closer to where he was standing. "Yeah, she's right here," Katy steps forward and smiles bittersweetly at her sister.
"Hi, Rosie!" She greets Rose, who for once didn't scowl at Katy for using the nickname she despised. "I miss you," she tells Rose who nods and smiles back.
"I miss you too. I miss you both," Rose admits, her eyes welling up with unshed tears. "You both look like ghosts."
"Hold on," the Doctor points his screwdriver towards the console and the image of Rose solidifies. Rose tentatively reaches out a hand towards them, or more specifically towards the Doctor.
"Can I…?" Rose indicates touch, but the Doctor shakes his head.
"We're still just an image. No touch."
"Can't you come through properly?" Rose frowned, looking upset. The Doctor cracks a smile that doesn't reach his eyes.
"The whole thing would fracture. Two universes would collapse."
"So?" Rose joked. The Doctor and Katy glance around curiously, and Katy immediately spots Pete, Jackie, and Mickey standing off in the distance beside a Jeep, observing Rose presumably talking into thin air. "Katy, Mum says that she loves you, and that you'll always be her daughter no matter what." Rose tells Katy after she spots where the brunette was looking, and Katy smiles back gratefully.
"Thanks! Tell mum, I love her too, and thanks for everything," Katy responded, choking back tears and smiling gratefully when the Doctor takes her hand and squeezes it for comfort, rubbing his thumb across the back of her hand.
"Where are we anyway?" the Doctor questions. "Where did the gap come out?"
"We're in Norway," Rose replies.
"Norway. Right."
"About fifty miles out of Burgen. It's called 'Dårlig Ulv Stranden'" Rose continues, and the Doctor jerks in surprise when he hears the name of the beach they were standing on.
"Dalek?"
"Dårlig," Rose corrects him. "It's Norwegian for bad." Rose chuckles a little at the irony of what she was about to say next. "This translates as Bad Wolf Bay." Katy's mouth falls open in disbelief.
"You're joking."
"No, I'm not!" Rose insists, before tears start welling up in her eyes too. "How long have we got?" She asks, hesitantly.
"About two minutes," the Doctor confirmed, just as reluctant.
"I can't think of what to say!" Rose admitted, out of grief and frustration. The Doctor takes note of Mickey, Pete, and Jackie standing off in the distance too.
"You've still got Mister Mickey, then?" He both questions and reassures Rose, who offers a weak smile.
"Yeah, well there's five of us now," She confirmed. "Mum, Dad, Mickey, and the baby."
"Baby?" Katy's eyes widen with delight.
"You're not?" the Doctor was surprised, but Rose chuckles when she realises where his thought processes had been heading and was quick to correct him.
"No. It's mum. She's three months gone. More Tylers on the way," Rose grinned, obviously happy that she was once again going to be a big sister. However, Katy's face falls, knowing that she was never likely to meet her brother or sister.
"And what about you? Are you—" the Doctor inquires.
"Yeah, I'm back working in the shop," Rose replies, and the Doctor nodded thoughtfully, while Katy just shakes her head and rolls her eyes, knowing damn well that her sister wasn't telling the truth.
"Oh, good for you!"
"Shut up. No, I'm not. There's still a Torchwood on this planet. It's open for business, and I think I know a thing or two about aliens." Rose reports, and both the Doctor and Katy beam happily at her.
"Rose Tyler, Defender of the Earth," the Doctor smiles proudly at the blonde before it fades a little. "You're dead, officially, back home." Rose looks surprised by this. "So many people died that day and you've gone missing. You're on a list of the dead." Rose lowers her head, sorrowfully. "And here you are, living a life, day after day. The one adventure I can never truly have."
This time it was Katy's turn to squeeze his hand.
"Am I ever going to see you two again?" Rose asked, sounding hopeful. But the Doctor shakes his head.
"You can't."
"Then what're you going to do?" She frowned, looking a bit concerned. However, the Doctor immediately perked up and gestured between himself and Katy.
"Oh, I've got the Tardis. Same old life, last of the Time Lords…" He reassures her, and Katy clears her throat quietly, and very pointedly. Thankfully, Rose didn't notice.
"On your own?"
"Nah, I've still got Katy," the Doctor reminds Rose, who looks away, unable to completely accept that the Doctor wasn't ever going to be hers, and she couldn't help but resent Katy for taking what she truly thought was hers. But she still wanted to confess to the Doctor how she really felt.
"I—" She cut herself off, struggling to hold back her sobs, and the Doctor waited patiently, knowing exactly what Rose was about to do. "I love you," Rose confessed and both the Doctor and Katy winced uncomfortably. The brunette lets go of the Doctor's hand moves away a short distance, to give him a moment with Rose alone.
"I know," the Doctor nodded, smiling sympathetically at the blonde. "And I wish you every possible joy there is, Rose Tyler." He manages to get out before the image of Rose vanishes.
Katy and the Doctor reach for each other at the same time, and they hug each other tightly; trying to comfort each other as they both cry for the loss of their friend and sister. Eventually, the Doctor pulls away from Katy after kissing the top of her head, and starts slowly walking around the console, setting controls. Then freezes when something white catches his attention from out the corner of his eye, and he looks up frowning cautiously.
"Doctor? What is it?" Katy asked, having noticed his reaction.
She moves around the console and stops in her tracks beside him when she sees a figure, dressed in a white dress and veil, standing in front of the Tardis doors with her back to them.
"What?" the Doctor bursts out, in disbelief. The figure turns around, revealing a ginger-haired woman in her mid-30s, staring at them with confusion.
"Oh!" She exclaims when she sees Katy and the Doctor.
"What?" the Doctor repeated.
"Who are you both?" the woman demanded. The Doctor and Katy look at each other in a bewilderment.
"But—" the Doctor stutters.
"Where am I, eh?" the woman was getting increasingly agitated.
"What?" the Doctor was extremely confused, and Katy wasn't feeling much better.
"What the hell is this place?!"
"What?!" both the Doctor and Katy blurted out in unison.
