Round 1

Mewtwo vs Roy

Mewtwo's match graphic pose, now took up the screen, the Pokemon scowling over his shoulder, his back turned to the camera. The tournament highlights package that the veterans had gotten played, and Mewtwo was standing in front of the interview chair.

"This interview portion is irrelevant. I am looking forward to fighting Incineroar, as I did not fight one in my Alolan travels, and I believe Roy is an easily manipulated louse, who I will beat. And before you ask, no, Krystal's telepathic abilities are weak and irrelevant. As far as the Earthbound children, we have already established that I am the teacher and that they are the pupils. I do not see this relationship changing."

"Whelp," Nikki said, her hands clapping against her thighs as she aggressively through them up in defeat, "Thanks for your time."

Mewtwo simply huffed at the woman's blatant sarcasm, teleporting away.

Next was Roy, who's pose consisted of him putting one foot in front of the other, palm extended. His tournament highlights played, ending in him holding the Melee championship belt aloft with Cranky's call of the newcomer Roy overcoming all the odds. Now, he sat in the interview chair, a grin on his face.

"My name is Roy of Pharae, my opponent is Mewtwo."

"It's interesting," You both missed Brawl, he to avoid the Subspace conflict, and you to focus on the reconstruction of Bern. Do you think that'll give you an advantage or a disadvantage?"

"Well, from my understanding, Mewtwo is one of the few Pokemon who can learn every technique, so there's no doubt he's changed his move set. However, I've fought some pretty unbelievable foes in my time, so I'm far from concerned."

"What do you think of Mewtwo personally?" asked Nikki

Roy frowned, "He's intimidating simply for being so hard to read, both in manner and in technique. He's militant in his ideas, but not on the whole evil, and he's plotting several steps ahead at all times. Despite the intimidation, he is much like others I've fought and beaten."

"Anyone you're looking forward to fighting?" she proded

"Well, Mister Bogard owes me a rematch," Roy laughed, "But beyond that, Incineroar, and the newest Order of Askr members to become Smashers, Chrom and Edelgard, would be a great honor to test my blade against as well."

"Alright, that's it, thank you for your time." said Nikki, a warmth in her voice.

"Thank you Nikki, it's always a pleasure." Roy nodded

"What do you think of this match Cranky?" asked 9-Volt, all eyes on their live feed.

"I actually like both these lads. Mewtwo believes in Pokemon independence, which I can appreciate politically, and Roy's a scrappy young chap. Watching him win Melee reminded me of young Diddy actually."

"Wow, positivity across the board," gasped the Nintendo fanatic.

"Don't get used to it young man,," Cranky snapped.

The young commentator chuckled, "I won't. Futaba, you're up."

"I don't care what the facts have to say," Futaba started yelling as soon as she was on screen. I trust "How Good was Mewtwo Actually?" implicitly. Mewtwo it is!"

"Alright! Let's throw it down to-"

"Why am I here?" echoed the pre-recorded voice of Mewtwo.

"...entrances," 9-Volt shuddered, "I know that's been part of his entrance since Melee but darn if it doesn't freak me out."

A metal version of the Mewtwo Battle Theme from Pokemon Stadium played, the genetic marvel floating out of the tunnel and towards the center of the stage, arm crossed, unphased by the mostly negative reaction his appearance ingendered..

"Once again to thank GaMetal for the rendition," 9-Volt said hurriedly.

"Damn, you'd think you'd eventually learn not to be so spooked."

"Yeah…sorry," 9-Volt stammered.

The metal music was replaced with a heroic marching song, Holding the flag of Bern high, Roy marched out, a wide smile on his face as he triumphantly waved the flag to mostly female-lead chants of "Roy's our boy."

"Roy still as popular as ever with the ladies," observed 9-Volt.

"I may like him more than I do the others, but he's still an anime prettyboy."

"Will you be serious Cranky ?" 9-Volt snapped, "Anyway, Roy's entrance music this tournament is Beyond Distant Skies-Roy's Departure, from the Bernian opera about his heroic unification of the continent. As Roy meets the distant sky of the Smash stage, will he depart on to a win or loss?"

"Hey kiddo, that was pretty good," Cranky admitted, alien admiration in his voice.

"Well good, me and mom workshopped that one."

"Maybe I should have her up here instead of you!" cackled the elder Kong.

9-Volt groaned audibly just as Mills Frames appeared between the two.

"The following contest is a Round 1 Match of the Super Smash Brothers Ultimate tournament! The winner of this bout will face either Young Link or Ganondorf in Round 2. Introducing first, in the corner to my left, he comes to us from the Pokemon universe, he is the Genetic Pokemon, he is MEWTWO!"

More boos. More indifference by Mewtwo.

"Introducing in the corner to my right. He comes to us from the Fire Emblem universe, he is the Melee Champion, he is The Young Lion, he is ROY!"

Roy waved to the crowd, who peppered him with the tried and true "Roy's our boy" chant.

As the chant died down, Mills began his explanation, "You know the rules guys, if Mewtwo wins the coin toss, the stage will be the Unova Pokemon League-"

"Which I will," Mewtwo interrupted, "I have used Future Sight to determine the coin will land on the tails side, which I will pick."

Mills looked to Roy, who shrugged, "I can beat Mewtwo on any stage, don't worry!"

The Wire Frame shrugged back, flipping the coin. Sure enough, it landed on Tails.

"Well…you know the rules guys, 2-Stock, items medium. Are you guys ready?" Mills asked much less enthusiastically than his other introductions.

Both of them nodded and were teleported underneath the stormy, simulated skies of Unova.

Stage: Unova Pokemon League

Rules: 2-stock, items medium

Music: Victory Road (Pokemon X and Y)

3

Mewtwo teleported in with a spinning flourish.

2

Like all the others of his ilk, Roy appeared in a seal of the Fire Emblem.

1

Roy steeled himself, preparing to run, while Mewtwo stood on the opposite side, unmoving.

GO!

Roy charged Mewtwo, jumped so vigorously he cleared Mewtwo completely.

"Overzealousness, or an intentional fake-out by Roy? We'll never know?" pondered 9-Volt.

Roy jumped in midair, barely grabbing the ledge, but managing to land behind Mewtwo on the dismounting simply slapped him with his tail, that alone enough to send him to the other side of the stage. Mewtwo finally moved his arms, charging a Shadow Ball, the full brunt of it resting in a dark aura on his arm when Roy was finally in striking distance, unloading on Mewtwo with one of the signature moves of the Fire Emblem clan It had many names, but to Roy, it was the Dancing Blade.

Mewtwo simply grunted in annoyance.

The 150st Pokemon floated upward, flipping through the air as he did onto one of the stage's platforms. Roy jumped to meet him there, but Mewtwo ducked away to grab a Jet Pack, jumping back up with a somersault kick, and summoning electrical sparks around him to further smother the leader in pain. Once again, Roy found himself hanging from the ledge, jumping up several times, only to be met with Mewtwo's shield each time.

"If he's psychic," demanded Cranky, "Why doesn't he Perfect Shield?"

"Maybe he's waiting for the right time," 9-Volt offered unsuredly.

It was after bouncing off of yet another shield from Mewtwo that Roy fumbled directly into an Assist Trophy as it appeared, picking it up. The form of Waluigi appeared. As it cackled, Mewtwo jumped down from the platform, glaring at the look-alike of the purple plumber.

"Does Mewtwo dare take Waluigi on?" 9-Volt wondered aloud.

"Listen," growled Cranky, "I'm tired of you kids acting like Waluigi is some 'Ultra Instinct' fighter, whatever that means. Mewtwo could eat Waluigi for…"

Waluigi briskly stepped over and began to stomp an unsuspecting Mewtwo.

"...I'll be damned," Cranky sighed.

Mewtwo was knocked away by Waluigi's first volley, but using Teleport, he avoided the next, even managing to Tail Whip Roy in the process. Teleporting once again, he lurched into the path of an Invincibility Star. Shadow Clawing Roy twice, Roy battled back with a Blazer attack, the flaming sword carrying Roy up but nearly bouncing Mewtwo off of the stage. The wily Pokemon managed to teleport to the stage before he hit the blast zone. Roy followed after him, only to be thrown telekinetically, a full-power Shadow Ball following after him, the dark energy smothering Roy, sending him to the Blast Zone.

Mewtwo: 2

Roy: 1

"And just like that, Roy turns the tide!" cheered 9-Volt.

"I don't know boy," warned Cranky, "The tide hasn't stayed in one direction very often, at least not in the first round."

Roy immediately jumped off the Revival Platform, attacking Mewtwo with yet another Double Edge Dance, and in nearly the same movement, grabbing Mewtwo and throwing him to the right. The savior of Bern hauled off after him, hitting him with a Flare Blade slash, and then another, the strength of this one enough to knock Mewtwo away into the Blast Zone.

Mewtwo: 1
Roy: 1

"What did I say boy?" crowed Cranky, "Never doubt me again whippersnapper!"

"I won't sir."

"Finally, you put some respect on my name," hooted the bearded ape.

The following things happened in such quick succession that it stunned the raucous crowd to a near silence. First, Mewtwo wacked Roy with a tail whip, grabbing a Bullet Bill in the same movement, activating the magical bullet so that he became a giant version of one. After rocketing into Roy with the force of a freight train, he erupted from the transformation with a flip kick. As a stunned Roy flopped onto the platform, Mewtwo used Confusion, rendering Roy, who had once been scrambling to get up, immobile and dizzy. Mewtwo once again grabbed Roy telekinetically, throwing him into the electrical explosion Zekrom had created on the ground.

"And immediately, Mewtwo turns the tide again!" hollered Cranky.

"I won't be so sure. Look!" 9-Volt warned.

Roy, breathing heavily and grimacing in pain, had fallen on the opposite side of the stage, where a Bullet Bill lay. Much like had been done to him, he activated it, barrelling towards Mewtwo, hitting the shocked Psychic Pokemon, erupting out of the transformation with a sword slash.

"Look at these two peppy youngsters, going out of their way to prove an old man wrong. That's what's wrong with your generation young man." shouted Cranky

"Oh c'mon," sighed 9-Volt.

Mewtwo teleported, backstepping away to avoid the house of fire that was roy, but slashes and low stabs sent the legendary reeling. Mewtwo waited for Roy to rear back for an attack. When Roy was defenseless, he fired off confusion again. A flurry of Shadow Balls sent Roy reeling in the opposite direction. Just as Roy was about to step off-stage, Mewtwo grabbed him telepathically again, this time forcing him down to the ground and wacking him with his tail across the back. As Roy bounced off the ground and into the air, Mewtwo peeled off a final Shadow Claw to send Roy to the Blast Zone with finality.

GAME!
"Oh wow, you know what I just realized?" prompted a stunned Cranky.

"What?" 9-Volt asked.

"Cloud is the only previous champion to advance to Round 2," explained the matriarch of the Kong tribe.

"Oh wow, you're right. If you had an office pool, sorry for picking wrong I guess?"

Mewtwo spun in the air upon arrival to the courtyard, tensed his muscles, and laughed. A dark aura erupted from him in sync with the splash screen.

MEWTWO WINS!

Roy clapped, his losing interview with Mister Zero taking center stage.

"What're your thoughts on that fight?"

"We both went in ferociously and he came out the victor. I do not envy his next opponent, but I am in awe of his prowess.

"Fair enough, let's throw it to Rita."

"Thanks Mister Zero," Rita said as she appeared on-screen, "I'm here with Mewtwo. Congratulations on your victory."

"Yes, one that was as obvious as the morning dew," cockily announced Mewtwo, "I'll be frank. I'm pulling for Young Link because, insolent as he can be, he at least possesses the heart of a warrior. Ganondorf is a blowhard who I could beat with no effort. Now, if you'll excuse me."

With that, he teleported away."

"Alright guys, back to you." Rita shrugged.

As soon as Mewtwo appeared in the Smashers Box, a throng of Smashers stood between Mewtwo and Ganondorf, the congratulations Roy received from the Fire Emblem crew went ignored.

"You dare speak to a king this way? I will rip out your throat!" Ganondorf's voice boomed loud enough to drown out the attempts at peace.

"GANON BABY THINK OF ZE MONEY!" Wario yelled louder, "THINK OF-A ZE INFRASTRUCTURE CHANGES YOU CAN MAKE TO YOUR VILLAGE WITH ZE MONEY!"

Ganondorf relented at that, stomping back to the back of the auditorium with the rest of the Wa–ffice. By that point, the randomizer had already selected the next match.

"LUCAS VERSUS DIDDY KONG!"

"YES!" Toon Link cheered, "Remember our rematch."

"I will," Lucas affirmed just barely loud enough to be heard.

Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong engaged in their secret handshake/victory dance, beating their chests while dancing around each other, the Kongs engaging in one final fist bump before Diddy darted down Tunnel B, Lucas heading down Tunnel A.
