Somewhere over Russia, a Providence dropship containing Captain Calan and two other agents was being tailed by two Air Force fighter jets that were blasting after it, the pilot trying its best to avoid the lethal projectiles.
"We still ahead of 'em?" Calan asked.
"Barely," the female pilot said. "They really want their stuff back, sir."
"They should have taken better care of it."
That was when White Knight appeared on the TV screen with a stern glance.
"Do you have it?"
"Mission accomplished," Calan said, holding what looked to be a cylindrical device that belonged in a computer.
"Your mission is accomplished when you deliver the data rod, not before, Captain Kalan."
As the ship flew forwards, lightning flashed, thunder crashed and the rain came tumbling down in front of it.
"Storm front dead ahead cap. I'm calling it a Category Three," the male co-pilot reported.
"More like an eight. It'll rip this ship apart," the female pilot said.
"Take us around," Calan said.
"Sir, you know where that takes us," the male pilot said.
"Straight over the Bug Jar," the female pilot realized.
"Exactly."
The pilots then flew the ship down into the mountains, approaching what seemed to be a city that was sealed off by a yellow domed forcefield. The fighter jets pursuing Calan and his crew then broke off and retreated.
"The enemy has broken off pursuit, sir."
"Can't say I blame 'em," Calan said. "Get us over this place and on a course for home."
Suddenly, from inside the Bug Jar, an energy beam shot out and blasted one of the ship's wings off.
"We're going down!" the male pilot shouted as the ship fell through the forcefield and fell into a small field.
Afterwards, all five agents exited the ship, coughing slightly from the resulting smoke.
"Everyone, okay?" Calan grunted out.
"We won't be soon," one of the agents said as the shadow of a giant growling EVO loomed over Calan and his team.
"Here's what we know," White Knight said as Rex, Roxie, Six and Holiday converged in front of the screen in the meeting room of Providence Headquarters. "Exactly one hour ago..."
The head of Providence was interrupted by Bobo's chuckling as the simian EVO walked by holding a newspaper and reading the funnies.
"What will that cat do next?"
Bobo stopped as he looked up at the glaring group of agents.
"We're kind of having a crisis right now, Bobo," Roxie said. "We don't have time for you to laugh at Garfield."
"Carry on."
"...A Providence transport under command of Captain Calan was lost with all hands over Eastern Europe," White Knight finished.
"They were good people," Six mused. "I hope it was worth it."
Holiday then pulled up the file on the data rod that Calan had just stolen.
"The schematics on this data rod would allow us to build a device capable of predicting what kind of EVO a person might become," she said.
"If this thing is so important, then why didn't you send us for it?" Rex asked.
"Yeah, come on, White," Roxie said. "Aren't we supposed to be your secret weapons?"
"Because some missions, you two, require a little sensitivity."
"We got that," Rex said. "Tons of it. Ask anyone."
"You bash things with giant mechanical fists and all sorts of weapons that you make out of nothing," Bobo said. "That sound sensitive to you?"
"That's it! Get over here, you little punk!" Roxie shouted as she jumped out and tackled Bobo, both of them rolling all over the floor in a dust cloud.
"Where did they go down?" Six asked.
"The Bug Jar," White Knight finished, prompting Roxie and Bobo to stop fighting as they stood up properly.
"Yeah, huh," Rex said. "What's the Bug Jar?"
Holiday and Six nodded as the former typed in the coordinates of the Bug Jar into her computer and showed the twins the wasteland that lay ahead.
"This used to be Kiev."
"Had the chicken," Bobo chuckled. "No big loss if you ask me."
"During the event, Earth's magnetic field funneled a massive concentration of nanites to this site. It became an instant hot zone. Mutations were off the scale. Nearly every living thing in there turned EVO- the worst kind."
"The U.N. gave in to public fears," Six added. "Survivors evac'd, the city contained under a Class 5 containment field."
"Even Providence isn't allowed in that madhouse," Holiday said, swiveling back to the twins. "For five years, the Bug Jar has been a complete mystery, even to us."
"So the genius solution was to cut them off from the rest of the world?" Roxie asked. "Talk about solitary confinement."
"But those were chaotic times, Roxie. It was before Providence existed. Before you two existed."
"You four will fly over the Bug Jar in a suborbital shuttle," White Knight commanded. "Rex and Roxie will airdrop in, retrieve the data rod from the wreckage and fly back out, hopefully unnoticed. That's it. Nothing else. Sensitive enough for you?"
"Airdrop?" Rex asked as he, Roxie and Bobo all high fived. "Nice!"
In the garage, as the twins approached the shuttle with Six and Bobo, they were suddenly pulled into a small area and smirked to Rex, leaving Roxie extremely uncomfortable.
"This is something I've been wanting to do this for a long time."
Rex gained an excited look upon his face and gave out a smile as he puckered his lips. Unfortunately for him, Holiday instead fastened something around his waist along with his sister.
"So, fanny packs made a comeback," Roxie said, looking at the belt. "Okay."
"Molecular scanner," Holiday explained. "While you two are in there, I need you to take a few samples. Look, it's really simple. You just place this atomizer on a specimen and-"
"White didn't authorize this, did he?" Rex asked.
Holiday only gave a sly smile to the twins, who then returned the gesture.
"This is the biggest risk you've ever taken, Doc," Roxie said.
"Yeah. I'm thinking it's worth at least, say... dinner?"
"Dinner," Holiday confirmed. "Just you and me, Rex. You know what I say, Rex? You and your sister get me those samples and I'll even buy."
"Yes!" Rex cheered as he and Roxie joyfully walked into the shuttle.
"What's with you?" Six asked.
"Just basking in the glow of Rex's awesomeness," Roxie said through gritted teeth.
Later on, the shuttle took off from the cargo bay, sending the twins, Six and Bobo to the Bug Jar.
"Come back safe," Holiday begged upon seeing the team leave.
Soon enough, the shuttle came across the Bug Jar in all of its domed glory.
"I'm scanning for the rod's carbide alloy casing," Six reported before calling for the twins. "Rex, Roxie, you're up."
Rex and Roxie got up from their seats as the communication screen activated to show Holiday.
"Now, all you two should feel going in is a tingle. It's a one way shield, containment only."
"Forget Bug Jar," Rex said. "It sounds more like a bug zapper."
"Upon your return, Bobo will fire a null-torp to open a hole in the dome," Holiday informed as Bobo smirked cockily and hoisted his bazooka.
"Prepare yourselves," Six warned. "Death is never pretty."
"What if the agents are still alive?" Roxie asked.
"All other priorities are secondary, you two."
"You know, you could at least pretend that it's a tough choice," Rex scoffed.
"Every choice has a cost, kids," Six said.
"Make it fancy. I dare yous."
The twins smirked as they fist-bumped before they both divebombed into the Bug Jar, doing all kinds of aerial tricks as they fell through the containment field.
"We're through!' Roxie called.
"Rex, Roxie, slow your descent."
"Way to kill the rush," Rex said as he activated his Boogie Pack and Roxie reached out and summoned her hoverboard and they both stopped their fall.
"Whoa," Roxie said as she and Rex looked down upon hundreds and hundreds of large grey jellyfish EVOs looming below them. "Talk about a welcoming committee."
The twins then resumed their fall as Rex activated his Smack Hands and Roxie shouted out as she summoned two fan blades to her hands that they used to swipe and smack away every EVO that came near them before they landed on the ground in a perfect three-point stance.
The twins then looked ahead and walked forwards before spotting the data rod hanging from a large blade of grass.
"That was easy," Rex said before he activated his communicator. "We found the data rod."
"What's the condition of the ship?" Six asked as the twins looked on and saw they were standing in the crater of the crash site.
"That's just it," Roxie said. "There is no ship. It's like it vanished into thin air."
"Wait," Rex said, spotting some footprints. "There's some footprints here too. Maybe the agents are still-"
"Secure the data rod first. You have your orders," White Knight commanded.
"We only need a few minutes," Rex said as Roxie activated the sample belt that sent out a vial to her hand, but then a quake suddenly rang out and sent her on her butt and the vial hit her shoe.
"Ow!"
The twins looked up and saw a giant mole/plant-like EVO burrow out of the ground before it opened the leaves of its mouth and fired a giant laser up towards the ship, instantly downing it and sending Six and Bobo hurtling down.
The twins then activated their Boogie Pack and hoverboard and flew up, only to faceplant into the shield.
"Shield. Right," Rex remembered.
As the debris fell into the Bug Jar, Six pressed a button to activate the eject, only for that to malfunction as the ship was in pieces. Six looked out the window to see Rex waving at him.
Bobo fell down against the door of the falling ship as an EVO flew in, only to get stuck in the hole blown into the ship's tail. As it's tentacles began to wrap around Bobo, he reached out to his bazooka and blasted the EVO with a null torpedo, resulting in it flying away.
Bobo screamed out as the plane hit the ground. He stumbled out, groaning in pain as he noticed Six and Roxie on the ground as Rex held the ship's tail in his Smack Hands.
"Okay, I'm done with the fun," the chimp EVO groaned. "Bobo wants to go home now."
"Well?" Roxie asked Six. "What's the damage?"
"The long range transmitter was on the ship."
"What are we supposed to do?" Rex asked. "Swim the river? Tunnel under the dome?"
"Dome?" Six asked. "This is a sphere, extending completely below the city."
"No air holes in this Bug Jar," Bobo said, shaking his head.
"Well, we can make more. With your torpedo thing," Roxie suggested.
Bobo then shrugged as he rubbed his neck.
"You didn't."
"He did," Rex sighed. "We only had one shot, Bobo!"
"Hey, that's what happens when you save the monkey last."
And then, a loud rumbling was heard and the team turned their heads to see a large stampede of EVOs running their way.
"Form up!" Six ordered as he spun his sword around before attaching the handles, forming a makeshift spear. Roxie nodded as she summoned her swords and Rex formed his BFS.
Six and Roxie leaped over the EVOs that charged them as Roxie kicked one towards Bobo's way as he blasted it into unconsciousness. Rex used his own weapon to whack away EVOs left and right.
"This isn't right," Six grunted.
"Besides getting our butts handed to us on a spit?" Bobo asked, vaulting over a large EVo before he was knocked to the ground by its tail.
"These EVOs are using strategy. They're organized."
Roxie sliced an EVO's tentacles away from her before she spotted a more humanoid looking EVO with black skin and large orange markings all over it, four arms and no face.
"That one," she realized. "With no face. He's the one calling the shots."
"Let him call these shots!" Bobo shouted, taking off his utility belt and tossing it at the humanoid EVO before blowing it up with a blast from his gun, engulfing it in a powerful explosion.
As the smoke cleared, the EVO looked on to see that the four heroes had suddenly vanished.
Later, as our heroes walked through the streets of what used to be Kiev, two large caterpillar EVOs rushed forwards to them on either side, roaring loudly.
Thinking quickly, Six used a tuning-fork like device to send out a magnetic pulse to a nearby sewer grate to lift it up, prompting him and the others to leap down into the sewers.
As the caterpillars passed over the grate, Rex used the vial to take a sample for Holiday.
Six got an uneasy feeling that he and the others weren't alone as a gun was pointed at his head and he dodged, grabbing the culprit's hand and tossed them into the sewer water into another black cloaked figure, revealing both of them to be the two ship pilots from the crash.
"At ease, soldiers" Six ordered.
"Providence sent a rescue party?" the male African American pilot asked.
"Yeah," his partner scoffed, pointing at the data rod around Rex's neck "To rescue that."
"Well, it's your lucky day," Rex smiled. "We can do both."
"We can rescue you and bring back the data rod."
"We thought you were dead," Six said.
"We should be," the male pilot said. "He came, the one with no face. Cap took the heat. Gave us the chance to get away. We've been fighting these EVOs every second since."
"Cap, the others. They even took the ship as well."
"Where?" Rex asked.
The two gestured to a large window-like grate as the female pilot nodded to the team.
"We're pretty sure that's No Face's lair."
"Then that's where we're going," Six said. "We'll use the ship's comm link to contact Providence for an evac."
Later, as the group converged on a rooftop, Six used his binoculars to look upon the streets, not happy with the results.
"The streets are crawling with EVOs," the male agent said.
Six continued to scan before spotting a broken pipe.
"Rex, Roxie, we're on point."
"Nice necklace," the male pilot said, noticing the data rod around Rex's neck.
"Do you know what we went through to get that thing?" the female pilot asked.
"Good thing you guys have us to look after it now, huh?" Rex said as he, Roxie and Six leaped off of the roof.
"Yeah," the male pilot said. "Lucky us."
The twins and Six rushed for the broken pipe and leapt inside before traversing the pipe to see No Face stalking Captain Calan and the other two agents surrounded by EVOs lead by No Face in front of their downed ship.
"He kept them alive," Rex siad.
"Yeah, but why?" Roxie asked. "What use could he have for them?"
"He's making them rebuild the ship," Six said.
The plant EVO that grounded the team walked in with a grunt and No Face turned to the area the team hid in and Rex and Roxie both suddenly got an extreme headache, grunting in pain.
"Rex, Roxie, what's wrong?" Six asked.
"It's like we can hear him in our heads," Rex said.
"I think he's communicating with our nanites," Roxie grunted in pain.
"The other Sky Ship,"No Face told the plant EVO. "You found it? Show me."
The plant EVO grunted in confirmation before walking off with No Face.
The trio of Providence agents nodded before leaping into the fray and attacking the remaining EVOs as Rex kicked one away with his Punk Busters while Roxie swung her warhammer around wildly and sent one flying away with a shout of effort.
The sole remaining EVO walked up to Roxie, only for Calan and the two agents to rush in with their tools and they all leaped onto the creature and bashed it as hard as they could.
"Agent Six, good to see ya," Calan said, shaking Six's hand. "You too, Rex, Roxie."
"Always lovely to see you, Calan," Roxie said with a nod.
"I'm especially happy to see that," the captain said, noting the data rod around Rex's neck.
"Right where you left it," Six said as everyone moved in to inspect the ship.
"He's crazy," Calan scoffed. "There's no way this thing's going anywhere without engines."
The twins looked up and gained a nervous look as Roxie gulped.
"Uh, I think he may have found some... from our ship," Rex said.
"We tried. Circuits are fused," Calan said as he reached for a shelf and pulled three blasters from the shelf and handed two of them to the agents.
"Rex, Roxie," Six gestured as Roxie walked up and placed her hand on the radio, using her nanites to reactivate it.
"Providence base. Identify yourse-"
"Send a ship!" she shouted. "We're all still alive!"
"Identify yourself! This is a restricted channel!" the agent at Providence Headquarters said.
"Oh yeah? We'll I'm about to tell you where you can stick your-"
At hearing Roxie's voice, Holiday instantly ran in and kicked the agent out of his seat (literally) and went to the radio herself.
"Roxie, is that you? Are you pi-"
"There's no time, Doc! We need a pickup now!"
"We already have another team on the way. We're searching for an extraction point... Hotel Kiev. The scans say that the roof is still intact."
"It's on the far side of the city," Six said.
"Then let's get-" Rex started before No Face suddenly appeared and tossed him and Roxie out of the ship and crashing into a pillar.
Six rushed at No Face with his swords, only for the intelligent EVO to dodge every swipe and he used his lower two arms to knock the swords from Six's hands before he used his upper two arms to start to literally tear Six in half, causing the top Providence agent to scream in agony.
Fortunately, No Face was sent hurtling away from Six by a boulder courtesy of Rex's Slam Cannon. But he wasn't going to fall for that trick again as he dodged the next boulder and rushed at Rex, grabbing the cannon and slamming Rex into a pillar.
Roxie rushed at him with her battle axe, only for him to grab her by the throat with his left arms and held her in the air.
"You are not the before."
"Um, I'm not sure that was a complete sentence just then," Rex said.
"They are the before," No Face explained, turning to Six. "The before forgot us. The before left us here. Left us... in pain."
"You want out, we figured that part," Roxie said. "But what will you do once you do?"
"The shield goes away. We all are free."
"Yeah, my sister and I are not gonna let that happen," Rex said.
"You are like us. Why do you defend them?" No Face asked, holding Rex higher before he used his lower right arm to grip the data rod. "You even wear their trinkets."
"That? It's a fashion statement. Wanna see my fanny pack?"
"LIES!" No Face shouted. "I see it in your mind. The before want this. More will come for it. I will hunt them too."
"Definitely not gonna let that happen!" Roxie shouted.
"Then your pain will be greatest!"
And then, three daggers embedded themselves into No Face's back and he turned to see a recovered Six cornering him with a scowl. No Face swiped back at him as he swiped at Six, only for him to dodge, causing him to smash one of the pillars where he was standing, and Six nailed him with another dagger. No Face ran back to Six, who then dodged and No Face smashed another pillar. This caused the ceiling above to cave in and bury No Face under a ton of rubble.
"Rex, Roxie, we have to move!" Six shouted as he and the twins escaped the hideout through the same entrance they came from and the lair completely caved in behind them.
Unfortunately, they weren't out of the woods yet as they were met by a large horde of EVOs that hissed and growled at them. Thankfully, Bobo drove in and ran them all over with a large truck that held the agents in the back. Rex, Roxie and leaped onto the Truck's bed as Six jumped into the passenger seat.
"Double time!" Bobo shouted as he hit the gas and drove away from the scene as No Face emerged from the ruins with a shout.
As the team drove ahead, one of the giant caterpillar EVOs emerged from the road ahead. In retaliation, Rex leaped off and activated his Rex Ride and ran into the bumper of the truck, causing it to increase its speed.
"No detours!"
Everyone shouted out as Roxie held her head down as Rex ran them up the ramp that had formed from the caterpillar's entrance.
"We've got a plane to catch!"
The truck nailed the caterpillar right into the face, sending it crashing into the road, unconscious as the truck and Rex landed safely on the road and rushed for the Hotel Kiev, crashing into the lobby.
The agents opened fire on the EVOs inside before everyone booked it for the elevator, rushing inside. Thankfully, the doors closed just before the EVOs reached them.
The elevator arrived on the roof and everyone made it onto the top of the hotel safely.
"And our ride is where?" Bobo asked.
"They'll be here," Six assured. "We'll just have to wait."
"Should've brought a magazine."
"You're telling me," Roxie sighed.
Everyone looked over the edge of the roof to see a horde of EVOs headed by No Face heading straight for the hotel, the data rod dangling from No Face's neck.
"Bobo, set up a gunnery post," Six ordered. "The rest, take up positions there, there and there."
"Bring 'em on! We can handle this," Rex said.
"Um, lose something, hot shot?" the male pilot said to Rex who looked down to see the data rod was missing!
The twins looked to see the data rod dangling from No Face's neck.
Roxie summoned an energy cannon to her hands as Rex built his BFS.
"On my signal!" Six said,
noticing the EVOs crawling up the building. "Make every shot count... now!"
Everyone opened fire on the EVOs, sending several of them plummeting to their doom. Six sent several of his swords spinning like boomerangs to achieve the same effect.
Rex activated his BFS' buzzsaw mode and sliced off the O in the Hotel Kiev sign, sending it tumbling down and crashing into several of the approaching EVOs.
As the fire rained down on the EVOs as the approached the roof, Calan looked over his shoulder to see tentacles emerging from the elevator door.
"They're climbing up the elevator shaft!"
"On it!" the female co-pilot shouted as she tossed out a few grenades that her partner shot afterwards as they landed in the mouth of one of the EVOs.
The resulting explosion then sent the elevator hurtling downwards, causing all the EVOs that were climbing the shaft went splat.
The twins looked over their shoulders to see the caterpillar EVOs chewing at one of the levels of the hideout building.
"Uh, why are they trying to level their own hideout?" Roxie asked.
And at that point, the building broke free from its foundation and hit the Hotel Kiev, therefore creating a bridge that allowed more of the EVOs to climb up to their position.
"Oh. That's why."
Among the EVOs was No Face, who was riding the giant plant EVO.
"The Shuttle's entered the shield, sir!" the male pilot said as he and ihs partner spotted the shuttle heading towards them, followed close behind by some flying EVOs.
"We got bogeys at 7:00!" the female pilot shouted.
The shuttle swerved around the EVOs projectile shots as No Face looked on from below as the plant EVO took its position on the bridge.
"Hey! Mitts off the ride!" Bobo shouted, blasting at the flying EVOs, sending them all crashing to the ground. "Oh, you want some of this, come get some?!"
The plant EVO opened its petals and blasted its huge laser at the shuttle, who swiftly avoided the blast and causing the EVOs following it to get caught in the blast.
"Rex, Roxie, take that thing down!" Six ordered.
"Time to get rid of that thing!" Rex shouted as he and Roxie leaped down to the plant EVO.
Roxie summoned a missile launcher as she fired at the plant EVO, blasting it back. Rex then built up his Slam Cannon, which then took a piece of the wall for ammo, which then blasted right into the plant EVO's maw. Without the focus to fire its laser, the energy built up inside it until it eventually exploded, sending shrapnel everywhere.]
"Everyone, fall back!" Six shouted as the shuttle arrived and everyone loaded up inside it... except for Rex and Roxie. "Rex, Roxie, what are you doing?"
"All other priorities are secondary, remember?" Rex asked as he and his sister stared down No Face before leaping down the building, ready to get the data rod.
Rex built up his Smack Hands and spun them around their gyros and sent a spinning punch down as No Face avoided it, landing right in the path of Roxie's warhammer. No Face then recovered and tackled Roxie, both of them rolling down the building before stopping as they landed at the plant EVO's corpse. No Face then picked the female twin up and she looked to see the shuttle take off without her and her brother.
"Rex! Roxie!" Bobo shouted in despair.
"They come back for you, then I get my skyship." No Face said as Rex activated his sample vial from the fanny pack and winked to Roxie, who then only nodded back to him.
"Yeah. I don't see that happening," Roxie chuckled as Rex leaped up and stabbed No Face with the vial, letting out a surge of electricity that then violently shocked the lead EVO, stunning him as Rex activated his sputtering Boogie Pack and took his sister's hand, flying them up to the shuttle in a rush.
Bobo reached out and pulled the twins into the shuttle, the door closing behind them.
"Shield in five seconds," the shuttle's pilot reported and the cockpit opened as Calan hefted a torpedo launcher in his head and sent out a torpedo that nullfied a spot in the shield.
No Face followed them on a flying EVO. Unfortunately for him, the shuttle just made it past the shield as it closed and the flying EVO crashed into it, sending No Face screaming as he fell down and hit the ground, not moving afterwards.
"Alright," Roxie said as she twirled the data rod's string around her finger with a smile. "Let me hear you guys say it?"
"Nicely done, Rex, Roxie," Calan nodded.
Six then walked by with his finger and thumb on his chin.
"Something bugging him?" Rex asked.
"Something's always bugging him," Bobo noted as Six looked back.
"Leaving that ship behind is a huge risk."
Calan then smirked as he typed a few commands into the shuttle's computer.
Down in the water filled hideout, the discarded shuttle detonated in a fiery explosion.
"Not anymore, it isn't."
Upon arriving at Providence Headquarters, the entire group went to a screen that showed White Knight looking down upon them.
"Well? Do you have it?"
"Actually, we don't," Rex said. "But the good news is, we got all your soldiers out safely. Isn't that safe?"
"Listen carefully, Special Agents Rex and Roxie. Soldiers are replaceable. Even they know that. You two had specific orders-"
"Whoa, whoa! Hold on there, chief," Roxie chuckled. "We said that we didn't have it. We didn't say anything about them."
Calan and his soldiers walked up and placed the data rod into a slot that opened under the screen.
"Mission accomplished, sir," the male pilot said.
White Knight looked on as Rex and Roxie each gave a salute before walking off, only to be confronted by their rescued soldiers.
"Pulling that on the White Knight? You guys are alright by me."
Roxie smiled as she and Rex continued their walk... right into Holiday's waiting arms.
"You did great, Rex and Roxie," Holiday said. "Did you get my samples?"
"I got mine," Roxie said, handing the vial over to Holiday.
"Me? I... got your fanny pack."
"Well, if your sister got her samples, I'm sure you tried."
I got the data rod and the men back. That's worth something, right?
"It's worth everything, Rex," Holiday said as she gave Rex a big hug. "Just not dinner."
Rex gave a disappointed sigh as Six walked in.
"Every choice has a cost, kid."
"Ain't that the truth," Roxie smiled and rolled her eyes.
