PREVIOUS CHAPTER REVIEWS/COMMENTS
FFN Guest: I read all of these in like 2 hours max, and maple and sally really need to just sit down and have a conversation without everyone else
Response: I agree that it would likely solve everything, but could you realistically see the heroes trusting Sally to be alone with Maple and Sally friends trusting her alone with Maple in her current state? But also Damn you binged the hell out of part 2 of the story.
WTP YCaballero076: "Hey lets give this world ending power to the girl whit anger issues, surely nothing Will go wrong" said All might
Response: To be fair to All Might and all of the teachers who know about it made sure that she wasn't going near Ida right now in the competition. It was the HPSC who recklessly pushed them together in the matchups that caused the problem. Of course it may have been smarter to wait till she got her anger issues under control. But given how close All Might came to dying they were safer taking their chances by having him give it to her as soon as possible.
AUTHORS NOTE
This chapter will be the official start of the tournament arc for the story and to start it off. You have a direct comparison to answer the age-old question of the fandom and series. Is support gear truly able to stand on equal footing to a powerful quirk? But for the fans of the SHOTOxMINA ship this will be an important fight for a different reason. Also I have started using real Japanese names for the characters I make so pay close attention as anyone with a name will have at least one important role in the story down the line of their introduction. Also sorry it came right at the end of march as I intended this to be released on the 29th but got busy at the last second with family stuff due to easter weekend.
UA SPORTS FESTIVAL
WEST TUNNEL
(THIRD PERSON POV)
In the tunnel entrance just out of sight of any of the audience was Shoto Todoroki and Mina Ashido waiting to be called out to the field. Mina, noticing how tense Todoroki was took one of his hands in both of hers, rubbing her thumbs in small circles in the middle of his palm.
"No worries Todo, remember it is your fire not his and I'm here every step of the way to help you. So, let's show her how great of a hero you already are." She told him, still partly shocked about the pledge he told her about as well as the little bit of information about his scar he was able to share with her. So, she made sure to avoid using words like mom or mother since he didn't seem quite ready yet to talk about her more than he has.
"… Thank you Mina, your right we can win this together." He responded after a moment of silence. As much as he would never admit it, he was afraid of his fire side of his quirk. But more so because he was afraid of hurting people with it or becoming like his father rather than his actual power. Yet here was Mina not being afraid of him or his fire, and even went as far as encouraging him to use it.
Even someone as socially inept as him knows most people would distance themselves from him after finding out about his past. Not because of him, but out of fear of his father, he would make sure to return the favor later. Though Mina did not end up undoing her work of calming his nerves when she gave him a peck on the cheek, making him tense again for a completely different reason.
Little did the students know that Nezu was watching through a security camera he was also transferring twenty-thousand yen to Midnight. She won the bet about them kissing before the end of the tournament that the two of them made after the first round. Nezu figured they wouldn't get so close quickly enough for her to try anything more than hug him, but it looked like he was wrong.
UA SPORTS FESTIVAL
CENTRE FIELD
(THIRD PERSON POV)
Standing beside the middle of the ring was Midnight and Cementoss as the referees who would intervene if the fighting got too intense. Back in the announcer booth was Aizawa and Mirko who despite for once agreeing on something for once. The urge to search the stadium for the bastard that rigged the matches was so great they may have already left to do so if not for Nezu reminding them they had to stay there.
However, Vlad King and Ectoplasm were searching the arena halls for anyone suspicious, granted they doubt they would actually find them this way. But if they attempted something again in another part of the stadium, they would hopefully be nearby to respond and catch them in the act. Fortunately, Sir Nighteye agency, minus Mirio Togata of course as he was on standby to help distract the crowd were assisting with the search as well. Grand Torino was to Midnight relief in the infirmary to guard Recovery Girl and any injured students that make their way there.
"ALL RIGHT PEOPLE, YOU READY TO SEE THE REAL ASS KICKING BEGIN AT LAST!?" Mirko, who took the place of Present Mic shouted into her mic like he would. Her imitation of him was apparently a success as the crowd was getting excited for the fight, cheering with her in agreement. "I DIDN'T HEAR YOU! AND MY EARS ARE THREE TIMES THE SIZE OF AT LEAST HALF OF YOU!" She said making them cheer even louder than they already were doing.
"All right, all right already, I think that's enough waiting it is time to send out the students Mirko." Aizawa told her not wanting to go deaf cause of her and the crowd. Though this was still quieter than his blond loudmouth of a friend, granted he had earplugs in for him. Unfortunately for him, Mirko was shouting just loud enough to hurt his ears, but she was not loud enough like Present Mic was to be able to be hear her through the ear plugs, so he had to take them out.
"Ok you party pooper." Mirko said rolling her eyes till he gave her a death glare and pointed out his ear plugs that were in his hands rather his ears. Clearing her throat she began to introduce the students.
"Up first is the team from the east tunnel, made of two support students." She said making the boys give one last look to each other in the tunnel before heading out to face one of the toughest fighters in the competition. "YUKIYA TAKAHASHI AND RAITO SATOU!" Mirko screamed making Aizawa eye twitch and the crowd call the boys forward. Both gave somewhat awkward waves to the crowd, but it was their inventions they wanted to show off not themselves.
Yukiya had short but wavy brown hair, almost a chestnut color really with a matching set of eyes the same color. Just like the other students he was sporting the gym uniform. Except unlike his partner, he had a metal backpack made from lightweight metal that was currently holding a multitude of other inventions.
His name given by his parents meant snow as his parents expected him to inherit his mother quirk that she first thought was snow when it manifested before she tried it. While his last name meant arrow or dart, though his aim when throwing of shooting either of the two was impressive it was not helpful to him till the recent attack. Yukiya quirk was usually at best semi-useless in most fights… except this one specific set of opponents where his quirk would take down his biggest threat.
Raito hair was an inky black pulled back into what most would call a man bun with the sides of his head shaved down to bristles. His eyes unlike his partner did not match his hair as his were a glowing bright ruby red color… literally that is his quirk. He has glowing red eyes twenty-four seven. Which is far from useful except for not needing to turn the light on when he tinkered with stuff in his garage at home.
His name that was given to him by his parents when he was born meant light or radiance, as his quirk was active since he was born. As for the family name however, it had nothing to do with his quirk but rather his family desire to help others that spanned all generations as well as his hair. His hair is neither white nor purple is what most people think when they hear it, but in fact he dyes his hair black in order to fit in better or as he puts it, appear normal.
To say these two were representing the true pride of the support course by facing off against would an understatement. How well they performed would determine the fate of their fellow students, and they both would sooner drop out than fail to show what support gear can really do in the right hands.
"Now coming in from the west tunnel, it is the ice prince of the Todoroki family and his acid princess." Mirko cheekily gave the intros her wife asked her to give. Seeing the thumbs up she got from her and the blushing faces of the women murmuring about cute couples she definitely did it right. Aizawa let out a sigh of exasperation/pity for the two students as he knows Todoroki unlike his father does not want to be in the spotlight. Mina was a bit of a toss-up as he did not know how she would… never mind he found out.
"SHOTO TODOROKI AND MINA ASHIDO!" Mirko declared as the two came out of the tunnel blushing, with Todoroki keeping it to a barely visible faint one while Mina whole face was a deep purple. 'Note to self, despite her liking to butt into other people romance she is easily embarrassed by her own. Perhaps I should use that as a way to keep her in line if she acts up?' Aizawa thought to himself while Mirko just thought they looked adorable, though not as adorable as her son and his significant other.
"Alright students get into a battle stance; the countdown begins now. Ten, Nine…" Midnight said getting Todoroki to immediately slide his left foot as well as arm back and move his arm forward a little. "… Eight, Seven, Six…" Mina taking notice of the countdown at last, brought her legs together and began hopping in place in a silly boxer's stance. "… Five, Four, Three…" Yukiya and Raito who despite already having pale complexions from being inside all day were even paler as they realized that they only had two seconds left till they got attacked got into their own fighting stances "… Two, One BEGIN!" Midnight finished her countdown as the fight had officially begun.
Todoroki, not wasting a second let out a burst of ice with a stomp, slashing his right hand to the left in a curved way as to somehow guide the ice. The result was a massive wall of ice separating the two halves of the field confusing the spectators as they did not expect him to immediately go defensive. Especially against a couple of support students, the announcers however seeing the globs of acid on Mina hand knew something else was up. But broadcasting this might reveal it to the opposing team so they kept silent about it, deciding to comment after their next move.
Mina throwing a ball of thick acid with her balled up fists made holes in the walls, where Todoroki after taking a deep breath launched torrents of fire. Going through the holes though they only lasted for a brief moment, but the chemical composition of her acid posted the flames turning them into fireballs. The cloud of steam created by this prevented the support course team from seeing them till they appeared. Which given the speed they came at you at made it impossible for them to predict or counterattack as they had to focus on dodging them… for now anyway.
"That is one hell of an attack, looks like they decided to not be a pair of little fluff balls and upgrade themselves to bunny status in my books." Mirko said confusing the audience for a moment before Aizawa spoke up.
"She calls inexperienced students fluff balls so the fact she acknowledged them as bunnies means that she somewhat approves of them as fighters." Aizawa said making the stadium do a collective exclamation at this. This however, got them excited once again since a student approved of by someone like Mirko meant one hell of a fight was about to unfold.
"Their strategy is quite clever actually, first he made an ice wall to protect and halt the enemy. Then once Ashido made holes in the ice, he launched his fire through them briefly. Though this accelerated the collapse of the ice wall, since her acid acted as a sort of chemical booster to his fire, he only needs to hold it for a second or two causing minimal strain on both conserving their stamina." Aizawa said making his students happy at the genuine praise he is giving them for once. The crowd likewise also gives applause and other signs or appreciation like whistling to the power couple strategy.
"The steam created from it blocks their opponents from seeing the holes, so not only can they not get that second or two to predict where the attack will come from. But it also stops them from using the holes as a way to get a counterattack through to them. This also sadly stops them from being able to see what their opponents are about to do to them." He continued pointing out how ruthless their tactic actually was, as well as pointing out the major flaw in this strategy that left them vulnerable.
Raito, who while dodging earlier thanks to his partner unleashed a foldable shield was able to reconfigure his aiming system on his own grappling pack. Though the shield only survived about ten hits, it was still long enough for him to get the job done. Now it was tracking where the fireballs came from in the mist and tracking their trajectory to calculate where the holes were for him.
Once he found all the holes, he wrapped the ends of his grappling hooks around homemade flash grenades his partner had made for the tournament. Launching his hooks through two of the predicted hole spots using his eye piece that showed him the spots as well as his own calculations for the shots he fired. Aiming at the right moment, he just dodged a fireball and launched them, instantly refilling the grappling hook with his back up he had installed into his invention.
However, he only had one back up which means they could only use this trick one time on them before he could no longer use his grappling hooks. The screams the two heard from the depths of the mist were quite pleasing for them.
Shoto Todoroki, despite hating his fire when this morning started was starting to get used to it as long as he was with Mina. Then after a few minutes of keeping this up two metal cylinders with pins on them came flying through two of the holes. Switching to ice he launched two ice shards at them, "MINA TAKE COVER!" He managed to tell her before he pierced them. Unlike her however he did not cover his eyes and jumped to the floor like she did, so he got by them at worse than full force as the two icicles amplified the flash.
"Now that is a nasty one, trust me I would know." Mirko said remembering the first time she took a flash grenade. The crowd also winced as they heard Todoroki scream covering his ears rolling on the ground, his fire going out of control for the briefest of moments burning his shirt. "Still looks like you were right Aizawa." She said to her co-announcer.
"Of course I'm right. Their strategy as good as it had left them blind to enemy counter attacks, unlike them their opponents had support gear to use so they had more potential for counter attacking." Aizawa said remembering the time when he was younger and a villain using illegally obtained support gear had him cornered cause he could not use his quirk or support gear to get unstuck. This was when he noticed the booing from parts of the crowd expecting a show of quirk strength rather than a show of support gear strength.
"SILENCE!" Aizawa yelled, making the crowd stop and the support students unfreeze from the booing and harsh comments. "It takes more than a strong or flashy quirk to be a hero. Martial arts, strategy, stealth, and proper use of their support gear is just as important if not more so than one's quirk. As you just saw, properly utilized support gear along with good tactics can take down even the most powerful of quirks. Just like when UA and Mustafu were attacked by villains." He pointed out making many feel awkward as they were reminded how important the support students were in assisting the hero students according to the news.
Mina despite taking a moment to help Todoroki with his struggling, could have sworn she had 'heard' something clicking in place. "Hold on Todo, I will cover you!" Mina shouted as she turned around to shoot a long wave of acid through the remaining steaming.
"HOW THE HELL DID SHE KNOW WE WERE STANDING THERE!" Yukiya shouted in confusion as Raito had just barely pulled him out of the way. It was not just him, even Mina wanted to know how she managed to do that just now. Though the acid would do little more than cause some minor skin irritation it would still have seriously hurt taking it to the face like he would have.
Little did the two know, or even Mina herself for that matter, her horns or antenna whichever you prefer to call them. Had picked up through the vibrations in the air bringing out and equipping a new piece of support gear on his hands.
Mina, deciding to get close and punch him was met with a nasty surprise as what she assumed was just a weird gauntlet was much more. Yukiya, using his quirk to create a white powder from the palm of his hands began filling up his gauntlet. Immediately spraying her forearms and face with the powder as she rolled her sleeves up before the fight he had succeeded.
"You're in for it now!" Mina shouted, holding her arms out at them after getting the powder out of her eyes. After a minute of no one moving and the two starting to grin she realized something was up. "WHAT DID YOU DO?" She exclaimed, flailing her arms around in a panic.
"Hey Aizawa, what is even happening right now with that white powder?" Mirko said unsure if it was legal to bring such a substance into the fights but held back as the audience would likely begin calling them cheaters.
"If you paid attention to their student profile you would see that his quirk creates a white powder from his palms. This powder can neutralize powerful acids as well as close off the pores of someone's skin. That means she cannot wash it off herself by making more acid, it truly is the one quirk that is the natural counter to her own quirk." Aizawa responded making the majority of the crowd almost go mouth agape at this revelation. Quite a few began asking if they rigged the match to get back at Endeavour after this reveal.
The number two hero himself did not care if they did, though had doubt All might would allow them to do such a thing was more… proud of his son? Humiliation aside from the flash bang, which even he would admit hurts like a bitch he was far too happy to see his son finally using his fire. "SHOTOOOOOO! I KNOW YOU CAN GET BACK UP; NOW SHOW THEM YOUR FIRE!" Endeavour screamed getting the attention of the audience as he cheered his son on.
Ironically enough UA was just as angry at the blatant rigging as the audience was, though what they were also wrong about this outcome being what the people behind the rigging wanted. The HPSC did not expect this to happen thinking the support students could not do anything against Endeavour son. So, they were quite upset to see the support students with the lead, though they did cheer up as Todoroki got back into the fight.
Now if anyone were to ever ask Shoto Todoroki if his father shouting helped him to pull himself together in that moment… well he will tell them no that's for sure. Even so the truth was, for the first time he heard genuine joy in his father's voice, no callous judgment, or high expectations but just joy. Getting back up, he made a dash towards Mina who was about to be thrown out of the ring by the two boys who did not fear her acid anymore.
Sending a slashing thin wave of fire at their feet they had to drop the struggling Mina as they needed to properly jump back. Shoto Todoroki made a small platform of ice to keep Mina lifted up above the fire he sent at them.
"TODO! I'm sorry but I can't use my quirk till I get this stuff off of me." Mina apologized pouting at her helplessness right now. Now most would think she could just her legs or other body parts, but that could make her acid resistance uniform get destroyed in the wrong places.
Shoto Todoroki patted her head in an uncharacteristic move and gave her a smile. "There's no need to apologize, I am glad you're my partner so get behind me this is going to be a big explosion." He told her as she nodded and got a good distance behind him, just to be safe he created an ice wall behind them.
The support team was not doing nothing all of this time though, as the two boys brought out a slap together machine gun that fired rubber bullets. This was something the two just barely finished and sent in the last class before the festival, barely getting the okay. Unfortunately for them he was quicker, throwing a wave of ice to block it. Keeping it just low enough that he could still see them unlike last time but angled so the bullets went into the air.
Taking a deep breath to steel himself, Todoroki sent a huge torrent of flame against his opponents. This was when a shockwave occurred from the sudden rising of air pressure. Creating an explosion blowing up their entire half of the arena knocking them out of bounds as well as out cold.
The shockwave sent him flying back into Mina who smirked as his head landed into her chest. Causing him to blush a deep red as she giggled before hugging him closer despite her own faint purple blush. Despite the massive explosion/shockwave he caused Present Mic made sure to get some of the students to guide the drones, so they caught this moment.
"THE WINNERS ARE… THE LOVELY COUPLE SHOTO TODOROKI AND MINA ASHIDO!" Midnight said making sure to add the lovely couple part to embarrass the two teens a bit more before she waved them off. Mina despite Midnight's attempt did not regret pulling him closer to her, though she knew Yaoyorozu and Himiko were definitely going to get on her case for it when the festival was over.
With the first fight done the two winning students went to their private room that had a small tv to watch the fights and a sink. An amenity that they were glad was put in each individual room for, especially Mina. Though it did get a bit awkward as both students needed to change into new shirts. But that is something only Midnight and Nezu will know thanks to Izuku adding a camera into all the mini tv for her.
All be it with him being told it was a security measure ordered by Nezu, who told her to pass on the message due to how busy he was. This also would get her a stern lecture from Nezu about potential lawsuits and dirtying his good name by lying. A lawsuit being something she barely avoided as she was registered technically as UA substitute nurse if Recovery Girl was not around or needed help for any reason.
While changing though Todoroki could not help but ask her what he was wondering. "Mina… how did you hear them turn the safety on their gun off." He asked wondering how she could hear such a nearly silent sound that even he could not hear it in the slightest.
"… I don't know?" a topless Mina responded to him after a moment turning around, almost causing Todoroki to end up fainting.
