Chapter 29
Kara and M'gann landed on the sidewalk outside the building holding both Obsidian North and CatCo. The Martian looked at her friend and said the words that the blonde was expecting,
"How do you want to evacuate the building?"
"We have to find that bomb. Even if we evacuate, we don't know how much explosive Enigma had her helpers put in the device," Kara heaved a sigh.
"Best place to put any bombs would be near structural columns. Since she's targeting Obsidian North, we can guess that she had them located near that space," M'gann said.
"All right. I'll use my X-ray vision up there, you do density-shifting thing down in the parking garage. Cars make even a small explosive, a large explosive. Meanwhile, one of us will have to pull the fire alarm," Kara said.
"I'll handle the alarm. I wish we had more backup," the Martain admitted as they headed inside the building.
"We've got this. Besides, you pull that fire alarm and we'll have plenty of backup," Kara winked as she headed for the stairwell. It would be the best way to fly up the Obsidian North levels. M'gann went to the nearest fire alarm pull station and yanked it down. When security rushed over, she told them to evacuate the building. There could be multiple explosive devices. Security activated a second set of alarms and soon people were rushing for the nearest egress to get out of the building.
"You seeing anything?" M'gann asked through the comms. She was making her way through the structure into the underground parking garage. The more she thought about it, the more she wondered how someone would have gotten up to Obsidian North with all the building security. Still, Enigma did have an Obsidian North computer software engineer on her payroll, so… there was still a chance.
"Not yet. Maybe they haven't gotten a chance to get into the building yet?" Kara wondered.
"I suppose Marie's information could have been a plant but I don't know what good that would have done Enigma," the Martian said as she flew from column to column.
"Ooohh bugger," Kara suddenly said.
"What have you got?" M'gann wanted to know.
"Nothing good. You keep searching down there. I'll see what I can do with this," the blonde said.
"Supergirl, Miss Martian, ARGUS is en-route. What have you got?" Alex's voice broke into their comms. The alarms had certainly triggered the police department and fire department but Lyla apparently had her way of getting notice.
"A bomb that is attached to a column inside a mechanical room. And by attached, I mean if I try to move it, it could trigger the device. Or at least, I'm guessing so. It would be the only reason to attach it to the column with wire, right?" Kara asked.
"Certainly, one of the reasons! Does it have a timer?" Alex wanted to know.
"Yes. It says that we still have ten minutes. They were timing it for just before quitting time," the blonde sighed.
"They wanted to be sure people were still in the building," her sister said.
"Uh ladies… we have a situation," M'gann suddenly burst into the conversation.
"What's going on?" Kara asked.
We've got a second device – the lowest level of the parking garage. The timer has about fifteen minutes left. Guess they wanted to be sure they got everybody," the Martian alerted them.
"Can you phase through the device and disable it?" Alex asked. She knew that it would be much faster to do it that way than to try and have the bomb squad get to both devices.
"I wouldn't know where to start. I pick the wrong thing…" the implication was there.
"Ok, we're two minutes out. I'm sending one team to Kara and one to you," Alex said.
