Edward

Wasn't it all just such a mess? First, catching Rosalie feeding him cake like he was some oversized toddler. Next, Edward looked out the window and saw Bella's head on Emmett's shoulder down at the pool with the camera on them. Hadn't Emmett told her about the cake incident? Or maybe he had and she'd forgiven him? Of course Edward couldn't help wondering if she was upset at all.

Edward hadn't been upset really, just caught off guard. It was a repeat of their last encounter—the same envy Edward felt that a complete stranger could have such a connection to the woman he was married to. Who was Edward kidding? He'd had that connection with Bella. He'd even told her that things weren't so great with Rosalie…but he'd waited to hear if that was true for Bella as well. Now, as he saw Bella with her hand in his down at the pool, Edward wondered. Could it be that Emmett had a thing for them both? Edward didn't respect what Emmett had been doing with Rosalie, but he couldn't blame him either…not if he felt the same way as Edward when he was around Bella.

When Bella had fallen on the hike, he'd rushed to help her, but Emmett wouldn't hear of it. In fact, it seemed he did everything he could just to keep them apart. And when he made that crack about Edward tending to his own wife, that was the last straw for him. Especially after the cake incident. Was Emmett trying to accuse him of something? His tone had taken a defensive turn, and now that Edward had time to consider, he wondered now if Bella had told Emmett about that night.

Even now, nobody was certain of what the producer had heard, and he was careful as he talked to Bella only about her ankle. He hated to see the pinch between her brows as she spoke. He would have loved to tend to her personally…From what he gathered from her conversation with Rosalie, she intended to go back to Knoxville and continue her work remotely. What did she do? There was so little that he knew about her.

After lunch, Jasper and Alice walked through the front door, and Alice went to her friend right away.

"How are you feeling?" Edward asked him.

"I'm better. I got some food and water in me. I was just dehydrated."

He'd given them all a scare, but Edward was not about to say that. Besides, Alice had been worried enough for all of them. Though the anxiety was gone from her features, she just looked annoyed.

It was time for them to part ways, and with luggage in hand, they embraced and said their final goodbyes. Alice's arms seemed to be linked to Bella's body then, and as they whispered their farewells, Edward kept looking to see if Bella would make eye contact with him. But she didn't.

With that, he and Rosalie continued to Edward's home, and he didn't even want to broach the subject until the cameraman was gone. Because they lived locally they didn't have to return to the hotel like the other two couples, and maybe that was for the best. It looked like they could all use some distance from one another.

Rosalie was checking her email; she'd received messages from her agent that she'd been in high demand.

Grinning, Rosalie did a twirl in the living room. "I'm so happy, Edward! My dreams are coming true! My agent says that he wants me to start filming another video tomorrow. He's getting calls for more commercials…there's even the idea that I might not only have my own Youtube channel but maybe even my own show! He's even going to put me up at another condo, and my expenses will be paid. Edward, it's so exciting!"

Edward was happy for her. Her eyes were lit, and her grin was a mile wide. She'd mentioned that now she would have another place to live…

"So, that's it then…"

She shrugged her shoulders. "That's it."

He put in the call to the producer to schedule their final meeting. This seemed like it would have been a no-brainer. But as they appeared the next afternoon, seated on the other side of the long table before Dr. Muncher, Dr. Saltz, and Pastor Ray, Edward found Rosalie's hands knotted together. Was she actually nervous?

"Seems like you two have had quite a run together," Dr. Saltz began, and the other two chuckled.

Rosalie and Edward laughed. "We have."

Pastor Ray leaned his elbows on the table. "I just have to ask, Rosalie…did you learn more about who you are?"

"I am learning more and more everyday, thanks to this guy," she said, tilting her head in Edward's direction.

"Have you learned anything about yourself, Edward?" Dr. Saltz asked him.

"I've learned that sometimes the needs of your spouse have to come before your own."

"Well said," said Pastor Ray. "We've always seen the potential in the two of you."

"You two had so much in common," Dr. Muncher said. "Your start might have been a bit bumpy, but…"

Edward's eyes darted up to the ceiling, and Dr. Saltz ended her thought right there. A camera man was positioned behind the experts and another to the side of them. He was so relieved that once they said their final goodbye that they'd be able to give back these blasted mikes. And he couldn't wait to be able to walk down the street without a camera following him. Sure…there was the after show, but at least he'd be able to return to a life of normalcy until then. What would that be like, he wondered. Once the show had aired and America had seen his business?

"Do you think that if a certain someone hadn't been around you may have been able to give each other more of a chance?" Pastor Ray asked.

Rosalie cleared her throat, and her cheeks pinked.

Edward's shoulders tensed, and he wasn't quite sure who they were talking to. But, then he realized they were referring to Rosalie and Emmett.

"I don't," she said. "Edward has changed my life, yes. Don't get me wrong. I'll always appreciate that, but…"

She stopped right there and then Dr. Saltz spoke. "Alright, well, I believe we have our answer, but we have to officially ask. Edward and Rosalie, do you want to stay married or get a divorce?"

Edward and Rosalie looked at each other then, and tears welled in Rosalie's eyes. She sniffled and wiped away the wetness. "I thought this would be easier," she said.

Edward took her hand in his. "It's okay."

Her lips trembled as she said the words, "I want a divorce."

He couldn't say that a part of him didn't cringe at hearing the words spoken aloud, even though he'd known this to be true. The part of him that was used to accomplishing his goals, that achieved what he'd set out to do…

"Edward?" Pastor Ray said, "And you?"

Edward was having a hard time saying it, though he felt it with all his heart. He was sure he'd look upon this as a fond memory, despite the rockiness and the challenges. He didn't like to think about how his coworkers were going to look at him…though he'd been telling himself he didn't care what people thought.

He nodded. "I want a divorce as well."

The three experts looked down, and the disappointment was evident in their eyes. "We can't say we're not sorry to hear this, but we're not so surprised."

Dr. Muncher spoke this time, "This is unfortunate, but have you two gained anything from this experience with each other?"

They both nodded and opened their mouths to speak. Edward gestured to Rosalie to answer.

"Absolutely," she said, still wiping her eyes, the tears falling freely now. "A friend."

The experts turned to Edward then, and he took Rosalie's hand in his for the last time. "The best."
