A Morning Interrupted
It was another bright day, the last day of school before summer vacation. For one fourteen year old boy in particular, this meant a little more to him than the usual. Yes it meant the usual time spent hanging out leisurely with family and friends, but it also meant more time dealing with his secret, something that was very important and yet something he had to keep secret from his family, for their own safety. It would be quite a dramatic time, of that he was sure, but he had no idea just how dramatic it would get. Getting dressed for the school day, the fourteen year old boy was reasonably tall, with short cut, slightly messy dark brown hair and brown eyes, he was notably pale and had a reasonably strong build for his age.
"Jake, breakfast." One of his dad's called.
"I'll be right there." He replied and quickly heading down.
That was something that stood out about the boy, he was raised by a happily married same sex couple, two men who were in fact quite famous back in their hometown, or infamous depending on who you asked. But regardless, they had left Hawkins, Indiana for a better life and to escape the nightmares they and their friends endured while there. It shook the dynamics of their group, particularly in terms of romances, but now things had settled down and they were all quite happy with their new lives.
So it was that Jake Wheeler-Byers left his bedroom and headed through the apartment he lived in with his parents, to joins his dads at the kitchen for breakfast. His dad's being Michael 'Mike' Wheeler-Byers and William 'Will' Wheeler-Byers. Both men had secured well-paying regular jobs and their love for each other was strong, yet just looking at them, you'd never have imagined that they played a hand on saving the world from a deadly otherworldly being way back in their teenage years. Yet they had told Jake the full story, he'd heard it all, seen their expressions where they told him about, not to mention the medals that they had earned for their aid, a recognition of their bravery.
"Ah, Jake, there you are...took your time?" Mike remarked.
Jake smiled lightly. "Sorry dad, I was trying to get everything ready, it's the last day after all."
Will smiled at that. "True, I remember how it was for us during days like that, right Mike."
Mike laughed a little and finished serving up breakfast, the family sitting down to eat.
"Fair enough." Mike agreed, before pausing. "Still...the first thing I think you should do for summer vacation is make sure you get a good night's sleep, you've been pretty exhausted these past few days."
Jake bit his lip, he knew exactly what Mike was talking about, but he also knew he couldn't tell either of them the truth, it had something to do with his great secret.
The secret was that Jake Wheeler-Byers was not a normal boy, following a strange accident that led to him being bitten by a radioactive spider, Jake was given super powers, he was now well-known around New York, not as himself, but as the masked super-hero, Spider-Boy. The leader of a group of teenage super-heroes who called themselves The Avengers, the protectors of New York. As if on cue, Jake felt his phone vibrating in his pocket, luckily he had just finished breakfast and was about to leave.
"Alright well, I'll see you when you get home from work?" He addressed his dads.
They both smiled and nodded and Jake grabbed what he needed and left the apartment. Both men got up to get ready for work but shared a worried look, they were getting worried about their son and his strange behaviour, something didn't seem right lately, but they couldn't put their finger on it. Regardless they continued while Jake left, not down the stairs but out the window and quickly climbed up the wall, using his powers to easily stick to the wall, climbing up to the roof and quickly changed, into his super-hero suit, pulling on his mask he made sure everything was in place and not going to get in the way and with that he fired out a web-line and swung from the rooftop to swing through the city, ready to begin.
He quickly checked his phone and listening to the intercepted message from the police scanner.
"All units be advised, attack on the Upper West Side Docks, target confirmed, Mac Gargan, AKA Scorpion."
Spider-Boy sighed as he swung through the streets, heading for the Upper West Side Docks.
'Scorpion, should've known you'd be up to something, why did it have to be now?' He wondered in disappointment.
As he swung towards the docks his phone started ringing like mad and he knew who it was and what they were going to say, so he prepared himself. Sure enough, when he answered, it was his friends, and in some cases, family.
"Jake, where are you at, dude?" Eddie Henderson-Sinclair queried.
Jake replied at once. "I'm on my way to deal with Scorpion, let me handle this guys."
"Dude, we're a team, you're not supposed to…" Terry Hopper-Mayfield interceded.
"You guys need to calm down and think." Jake said desperately.
That was when Amanda Sinclair chimed in. "Jake, we know we can take Scorpion but he's still a nightmare for any one person, please."
"Tell me truthfully guys?" Jake queried. "Out of all of us, who isn't in trouble at school for being late...at least in the last three months?"
"Urgh, he's got a point guys." Stephanie Buckley remarked.
"Yeah, we're all kinda in trouble with our teachers." Matthew Harrington agreed.
"Alright, but I don't like this." Barbara Byers agreed.
That was when her twin brother Thomas added. "Just you be careful, understand."
Jake laughed. "You know me, now you guys do what you gotta do, I'll do the rest and I'll get there, don't worry."
With that the call ended and he swung to his destination, ready to take on Scorpion once and for all.
End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
Also note this isn't all the super-powered characters talking here, one is missing but won't appear just yet, due to their age, also the ones who spoke won't physically appear until the chapter after next, at which point I'll give you another note detailing who they are and their connections.
