Building Concerns

Having returned home, grimacing at his own wounds and wondering just what would happen at home, not just for him but Stephanie too, Jake sighed. He knew it was lucky, given that it was Vulture they were fighting, that they were the only two who were hurt, thankfully not by much but still, enough to be noticeable.

'Well, here we go...no other way around it.' He reflected heavily.

Shaking his head he landed on the rooftop of his family's home, grabbing the backpack he'd set up and quickly got changed out of his Spidey Suit. Carefully slipping his suit back into his room, he carefully slipped down and approached the front door. Opening it he stepped inside and put on his best smile as Mike looked up and saw him and approached.

"Jake, you're home, good, I was...what the-?" He began only to gasp when he saw the cut. "Jake, what happened?"

Jake shook his head quickly. "It's nothing dad. Really."

"Nothing?" Mike challenged, eyes narrowed.

Jake bit his lip, but before he could protest anything, Will arrived.

"What's going on?" He asked.

Mike turned around instantly. "Jake's hurt. Look."

"Dad, please-" Jake groaned.

"Let's see." Will said, trying to be reasonable.

Jake sighed as Will stepped closer and took note of the injury himself, eyes widening.

Will shook his head as he looked carefully at his son.

"What happened?" He asked tensely.

"It's nothing serious, it was just an accident. I fell." Jake tried to explain. "I caught it on a railing as I fell, that's all."

By now Mike had returned with the first aid kit.

"Jake, really, don't downplay this." He said softly.

Will nodded. "Mike's right, at least let us check it out, clean it up."

Jake nodded and gave up, he had to admit, deep inside he was actually happy with their reactions. While he knew he had to try and keep his secrets, think up any excuse, he was pleased with the obvious show of care from his dads. He waited until finally they were done, the injury cleaned and wrapped up.

"There." Mike said. "Now seriously...is that what actually happened?"

Jake swallowed. "C'mon you guys, it's nothing serious. Please, let's just not worry about it thought. It's just a scratch."

Will shook his head. "Jake…?"

"Please, trust me, it's fine...it'll all be fine, now that you guys have seen to it, it's not gonna be a problem." Jake explained. "Let's not make this more than it is, right?"

Mike and Will both shared anxious glances upon that, but said nothing else, allowing Jake to head to his room, it was quite late, later than originally planned for him to have returned from the fairground with the others, luckily not late enough that they'd have to talk to him about it, it was summer vacation after all.

However they were still uneasy about Jake's strange behaviour and indeed how he had been hurt. There was just something about that made Will felt uneasy.

"Mike, something about all this is, strange...don't you think?" He said warily.

Mike turned to his husband and sighed. "You too huh? I've been worried about Jake for a while, Will. He's been acting strange lately. I'm worried about him."

Will nodded in agreement as they walked through to the living room. They both sat down and sighed, both of them sharing in their anxiety about their son and what might be happening to him.

"That injury, something about it wasn't...it didn't sound like how he described it." Will said at last.

Mike shook his head. "I know, I noticed that too, but why would he hide something like that, what could the real reason be?"

They lapsed into silence, worried about Jake and their fear over what might have happened to him, to their son, what he might have actually been up to in order to be injured that way, as they weren't falling one bit for the excuse he had given them.

"You don't think...you don't think he got caught up in that craziness in Chinatown?" Will asked suddenly.

Mike bit his lip. "You mean, that incident with the Vulture...where the Avengers fought him, why would...wait? Now that you mention it, Jake has been kinda vanishing at odd times."

"Yeah, that's...that's true." Will replied, brow furrowing. "Man, you don't think he's...you don't think Jake is somehow connected to those Avengers…?"

"Maybe one of them...the um, Spider-Boy, right?" Mike replied.

Both paused at that, curious, worried if it was true, worried if Jake was indeed connected to Spider-Boy in some way. What they didn't know was that Jake, changed into his pyjamas, stood by the door and listened, eyes wide in shock and worry. It was clear that his parents were getting a little too close to the truth, he had to intervene somehow, before it was too late.
