Confusion and Sorrow

Still staring in surprise and shock at where Venom had been before leaving the Avengers only recovered when they heard Spider-Boy gasping for breath. They all turned to him and saw he was mostly unhurt, merely breathless.

"Dude, what…?" Black Panther began.

Spider-Boy shook his head. "He ambushed me out of nowhere, then we began fighting...saying he had something planned...it looks like we were right, he's got something big coming and we're going to have to be ready for it."

"Urgh, great...so we can't do anything to track him down, to stop him?" White Tiger grumbled.

"I think it's already too late to stop him." Spider-Boy said sadly. "Whatever he's got planned, is already in motion. He truly has consumed power from the Upside-Down and corrupted the creatures there...he's calling himself Dark Emperor Venom now."

"Urgh, this is crazy…" Wasp grumbled.

The others shared a worried look, but it's clear they couldn't figure out what had happened and what Venom's actual plan was.

"Well, we'll figure it out." Spider-Boy said at last as he looked up. "We've...I've got something else I need to do."

"Alright then, just glad we were warned about the attack and could come to help." Blue Beetle remarked.

The others all nodded and began heading for their respective homes, while Spider-Boy turned to Jessica who had returned.

She bit her lip, looking at him carefully as Spider-Boy approached, he was looking at her carefully too.

"Are you okay?" He asked quickly.

Finally seeming to register she was in fact talking to the hero Spider-Boy, she blinked and stammered.

"Oh, I'm...yeah, I'll be okay, I just...I think I sprained my ankle while trying to run, but I'll be alright." She explained. "Are you alright? That, that monster…"

"Venom, yeah...I'll be fine. I've fought him before." Spider-Boy explained. "You're hurt."

Jessica shook her head. "Like I said, it's nothing much."

But she still winced as she put weight on her ankle.

Spider-Boy shook his head. "All the same...Let me take you home, alright?"

"Oh, um...thank you." Jessica replied, looking startled, her face heating up.

She told him where her home was and Spider-Boy actually picked her up and fired out a web line as he then swung away. Their journey was rather quiet, both of them dealing with their racing thoughts and worries. Finally, having been dwelling on the incident with Venom how close Jessica had come to getting hurt, multiple times, Spider-Boy couldn't take it anymore.

"I'm sorry."

"Huh?" She gaped, shocked at what he said.

He shook his head. "I'm sorry, you got hurt, getting caught in the crossfire between Venom and I…"

She started at that and then sighed. "It wasn't your fault, I should've got out of there myself. But that monster was just so…"

"You don't have to tell me." He remarked softly. "Ah, here we are."

With that they landed right outside their house.

"Here we go, you gonna be okay getting in?"

She nodded. "I will...thank you."

She smiled softly before managing to get the door open and limp inside. He stood for a moment, before sighing and leaping up, swinging away.

Swinging home, Spider-Boy growled to himself and shook his head.

'Stupid, stupid, what the fuck were you thinking...now look what you've done.' He thought bitterly. 'You gave away how you feel about Jessica, you've put her in even greater danger now...all because Venom saw you…'

He couldn't believe he'd slipped up like that, worse he was still so sure about how he felt. He couldn't deny his attraction to the pretty blonde, but this was what he had been afraid of, the reason why he had held off trying to talk to her and tell her how he really felt about her. All thanks to his acting without thinking Venom had put two and two together and now would likely target Jessica again.

His mind raced as he considered this. 'I've gotta think, gotta plan something...I need to figure out a way to get Venom away from her, make his focus on me. I, I just hope the others will help, can help…'

Shaking his head he landed on the roof of his home, grabbed the stashed backpack and slipped back down to his room and got changed back into his civilian clothes. Pausing for a moment, Jake faced the mirror and lifted his shirt, he grimaced at the forming bruise on his side, luckily that was the worst of what he'd suffered and he lowered it again.

"Jake, dinner's ready!" Will called.

Jake put on his best smile and straightened up. "Coming!"

With that he made his way out of his room to join his dads for dinner. Unaware that on his suit, a slithering black liquid moved along the back of it, seeming to make itself at home.
