Metatron leaned over Rin, his feathers working as a shield in the cavern. He listened for any demon that dared come near him and Rin while he was unable to defend himself.
"Metatron?"
"It's okay Rin. Rest. You'll need your energy to get out of here," Metatron said softly.
"I want to get out now."
Metatron brushed his hair from his forehead.
"I know Rin. But be patient," he encouraged. Ironic as it was the virtue opposite of the sin he had tried to commit not too long ago. Rin's eyes fluttered shut and he entered a light rest.
Shiro hadn't wasted a moment to get to Yukio when he had heard that he had been so close to a Demon King's attack. He knew he should be looking for Rin, but the last and only clue they had of his location was the mystery call they were certain came from someone in the Vatican. With time passing and no more clues or mystery calls, he couldn't hold back in checking on Yukio though.
He also was going to have to call in a favor from Mephisto as well. If anyone could find Rin, it was the shady demon king. At the moment, he would do his job as the Paladin, trusting Shura to help Yukio while he examined the area for any signs of Amaimon, or any other demon king.
He checked the forest with Kuro by his side. The cat sidhe happily helping, his ears twitching with each curious or potentially dangerous sound he heard.
"Now where was this attack?" Shiro muttered.
Kuro let out a loud meow. Shiro ran over to the sidhe sniffing a small divot in the ground. He gently touched the grass to feel some give. It felt like a sinkhole.
"Kuro, would you please dig here?" Shiro asked politely. Kuro meowed an affirmative and grew to a massive size. He began digging into the softer ground, stumbling across an empty pocket of air. Kuro tensed, feeling before seeing an angelic presence. He held back a hiss in fear of the powerful being that was below. Shiro walked next to him to see why Kuro had stopped.
"RIN!" he cried out in shock. Without hesitation, he jumped down into the cavern and ran to the unconscious teen. He ignored the harsh shiver that shot up his arm when he reached for Rin.
He scooped him into his arms and held him close. He felt Rin's heartbeat pulsing strong despite his grimy and nonconscious form.
"Oh Rin, you're going to be okay. I'm here," he said softly. "Kuro! A little help here!"
Kuro hesitated for a brief moment, then lowered his paw to lift Shiro up. Kuro focused on Shiro and the boy in his arms that he seemed protective of. It didn't look like Yukio. But it kind of faintly smelled like him. He was smaller too, easily lifted into the paladin's arms.
Shiro stepped onto the offered paw and let Kuro lift him and his boy from the pit.
"Kuro, we need to get to Yukio."
Kuro lowered to the ground and allowed Shiro to get on. He stiffened as he saw the powerful angelic being leave the underground cavern, his eyes locked on Shiro and the boy in his arms. Worry was etched into the angel's eyes. He flew upwards as Kuro stood, ready to run as fast as he could away from the powerful being.
"At ease Sidhe, I mean you no harm," the archangel sighed. "I'm here for Rin's protection."
"Let's go Kuro."
Kuro turned and ran under Shiro's order. He felt Shiro's hand tighten in his fur to hold on as his other hand was holding onto Rin. It felt like forever for them to exit the forest and an eternity to reach Yukio's group of students and Shura.
"Ah, Lookie lookie, the Paladin arrived," Shura commented. The students all turned to look at the powerful exorcist they had heard of in many of their childhoods as he arrived on a sidhe. Yukio appeared slightly confused though as he didn't greet them in his boisterous manner he liked to when things were okay. Granted, he wasn't okay since Rin's disappearance.
Kuro lowered at their side when Yukio saw what kept his caretaker quiet.
"RIN!" he yelled, surprising his students. In an emotional burst, he ran to his father's side as he slid off Kuro. His eyes were focused on his brother, lying limp and unaware in Shiro's arms.
"Yuki? Are you okay?" Shiemi asked.
"Whoa, who is that?" Shima spoke a little louder, and craning his neck to get a better look. Yukio didn't answer as he began to try and look over Rin in his father's arms.
Konekomaru was quiet, acknowledging that their teacher was looking over someone who appeared injured. Yet, in the back of his mind he felt there was something familiar about the hurt fellow.
"Shura," Shiro spoke up, "Begin taking them back to the classrooms. Yukio and I will need to take Rin to an infirmary."
"Sure thing old man," Shura spoke up, "C'mon you brats. Let's leave the medical work to the professionals."
The pages all looked at one another but didn't argue. They followed Shura away, none too focused on her as she looked back and locked her eyes on the form of Metatron. The angel had a look that she had seen in the mirror often when she had been brought out of hell.
"I hope that boy is okay," Shura heard Paku say.
"He will be, Paku. Raphael would be disappointed if he died after he helped him heal," the angel trailing her comforted despite being able to be heard. The girl seemed to perk up a bit.
"Though, with Yukio and the Paladin helping I think he will be. Don't you Izumo?"
"I'm sure he will be," Izumo didn't argue. She knew nothing about him or if he would, but there was no harm in being positive with her friend.
"What was he doing with the Paladin anyway?" Shima asked.
"He was most likely in the forest during the attack. Got lost or something," Bon commented dryly. "He probably had no idea what was going on and was knocked out."
"You think?" Miwa asked.
"How else would someone be in the forest while we were taking our esquire test?"
Shura held her tongue. Seemed no one was thinking that he could be Magdalene. Whether that was a good thing or not, she wasn't going to call it out. She remembered Rin talking to her about how hard he was hiding that he knew what his family was trying to protect him from and why he was doing it.
Yukio and Shiro watched over Rin with fierce intensity as Yukio treated the wounds. Having removed his filthy hoodie and opened his button up shirt, he had treated the thankfully superficial wounds on his arms and hands. The bruises on his chest were checked in case there were any broken bones under the skin.
"Where did you find him?" Yukio asked once the adrenaline began to die down and the bandages were applied.
"He was in the forest. He was in a covered sinkhole," Shiro stated. Yukio's eyes narrowed at the statement.
"Do you think that the demon king had something to do with him being there."
"I don't think we can rule anything out," Shiro admitted. "We can ask Rin what he remembers when he wakes up. You can bet he'll be talking our ears off asking what's going on."
"Dad, do you think he might already know about demons?"
Shiro was quiet. He placed a hand comfortably on Yukio's shoulder.
"If he does, I have no doubt it would be recent. And we'll be here to help him through it. Won't we?"
"Yeah. Nii-san will ask a lot of questions," Yukio responded, "And I feel comfortable answering most of them. How else would I be a teacher?"
Shiro guffawed at Yukio's words.
Rin has been found. DUN DUN DUN! Family reunited, and Rin has no idea. Place your bets on the chaos.
