Here is the ninth chapter in this series released in keeping with my self-imposed upload schedule for this series. The first day is in the books and now it is time to get really into the swing of things at U.A. and of course that means hero training really begins now. First though our heroes need to have lunch and prepare for the coming session. That is all the administrative stuff I have and there are no guest reviews that need a response or questions that need answers. Do keep the reviews and PMs coming as I always like hearing how much y'all are enjoying my work. Anyway, that is it for this pre-chapter note which means that it is time to sit back and enjoy the ninth chapter in Black RWBY Academia.
Disclaimer: I own nothing related to these three great franchises.
Chapter 9: Pre Battle Lunch
"Yuno!" Asta called out as he carried his lunch tray with the simple but nutritious meal on it that he could get with his stipend as a disadvantaged student and looked around the cafeteria for somewhere to sit. "There you are."
Yuno looked up from his meal that he had planned on enjoying alone on one the tables in the dinning room to see Asta beaming at him and making his way to the table with a black haired girl sporting a bob cut that had some cowlicks on top of it and two small horns on her head next to him. He knew that there was no way out of this, not that he minded it was just sometimes he did enjoy his solitude and nodded at Asta for him and the girl to join him which Asta did as he put his tray down opposite Yuno and the girl sat next to him.
It was the second day of school and the first proper day at U.A. after the orientation day which had been very different for Asta than it had been for Yuno. Between that, the work they had to do as a way to help cover their tuition costs, and the initial homework that they had to prepare for the first day of classes they hadn't had time to catch up on how their first day at U.A. had gone as both had crashed the moment they were done with everything.
Then Asta had almost slept in and had to rush to homeroom this morning while Yuno had been up at a good time and ready before him, so he'd just left Asta, now that they were at U.A. and in different classes they had to begin to do things on their own, to go to class. Asta had made it only because Nero, who'd given him her number the day before after the assessment test, had called him repeatedly and gotten his ass up. It had been a close call, but Asta just made it before the start of class.
At U.A., the mornings were reserved for normal school classes like math, English, history, and what not, with the afternoons being used for their hero course work be it normal training, lectures on hero laws, or specialty training be it in rescue work, dealing with Grimm which they'd have to do regardless of if they were on the Huntsman track or not, or other such training for when they became heroes. All this Asta had found out from the syllabus while Yuno already knew it because of the different teaching styles that their homeroom teachers had.
Between classes and hero studies was, of course, lunch in the cafeteria. Cook Hero: Lunch Rush was the head chef at the school and provided a wide range of good food at reasonable prices and so Asta had gone with a simple rice and fish meal that wasn't sushi while Nero opted for a more traditional udon noodles cooked in a vegetable broth. It also meant that this was the best time to meet up with Yuno and catchup on their first day here.
In time Asta knew that he'd eat more with his own class and then also the other students in the Quirk Knight squad that started to recruit him, as would Yuno, but for now he wanted an update from Yuno on his first day so that they could really start off strong with their rivalry. That and most of his class either hadn't made it to the cafeteria yet, weren't eating in it like that French kid Aoyama, or were already in their own groups on packed tables like the trio of upper class girls and after yesterday Asta wasn't going to mess with them, at least not just yet though as Silva was also a Quirk Knight student he'd have to in time.
"Asta." Yuno said as he steadily ate his sushi accepting that he'd not be eating in peace this time. "I take it you were going to join me regardless."
"Yup, figured that we could share stories of our first days." Asta said with a grin as he began to tuck into his food with no manners whatsoever. "So, how'd yours go?"
"Swallow before speaking, Sister Lily would be ashamed of you." Yuno said simply before he ignored Asta who spluttered at the mention of one of their guardians and Asta's unhealthy crush as he turned to the girl with him. "I take it you're classmates with this loudmouthed shorty."
"Yes." Nero said once she swallowed some of her noodles. "And I'll be joining whichever Quirk Knight squad that he joins as well."
"I see so you're on our track as well." Yuno said understanding why she seemed to be friends with Asta already. "And you are?"
"Nero." Nero said without elaborating. "I was in Asta's exam and saved his ass, a few times actually. Thanks to him I was able to decide my path as I was undecided coming into U.A."
"So, you're the one who saved him from the robot he destroyed." Yuno said. "Thank you, it would be a shame for my rival to die so stupidly right at the start and before I can beat him to the position of Wizard King."
"Hey, you passed out as well." Asta pointed out with his mouth full before swallowing. "I wasn't the only one."
"Yes but I took it down by myself and was uninjured but for overuse of my Quirk." Yuno said with a grin. "Which was part of why I beat you in the exam."
"On villain points because of your awesome Quirk." Asta pointed out. "I beat you on rescue points, so it was closer than you're making it out to be."
"Only because you were more reckless and stupid I bet." Yuno said. "Charging in and swinging that sword at any robot you see. I was calm and precise with my shots as I swiftly traveled through the area which is how I got so many points."
"You're not wrong." Nero said. "He was reckless and stupid."
"See and I got more overall points." Yuno said. "So, I am in the lead. Plus, I was second my class's Quirk assessment test yesterday."
"Aw man I was 9th; I've got more to catch up." Asta said before grinning. "And you know I will Yuno."
"9th?" Yuno asked confused. "But your Quirk can't be tested like that."
"It was all my muscles." Asta said flexing his arm for emphasis but as he was wearing his blazer it failed. "Though Mr. Aizawa did test my Quirk after he used his to lecture one of the kids in our class about his Quirk and it can reflect his though he's still much better at Quirk nullification than I am as I can only reflect it, if he hits me with Erasure then my sword vanishes."
"Right, your teacher is Eraser Head." Yuno said remembering. "That must be interesting, I hear he has some strange methods of teaching."
"He did threaten to expel the student who came last." Asta said. "And then when Midoriya did he said it was all a rational deception to make us do our best and that no one would be expelled."
"So, he lied to get you to do your best, how odd." Yuno said. "It's effective I guess but still not something I'd want to face on my first day here."
"Don't tell me about it, it was so stressful." A new voice said and Asta looked over to see the messy green hair of Izuku Midoriya with a tray of katsudon and a drink. "Mind if we join you guys?"
"Sure, go ahead." Asta said with a grin and Izuku sat down next to him as Yuno looked slightly alarmed when a pretty brunette girl sat on one side of him opposing the green haired kid and the uptight glasses boy from the entrance exam sat on his other side especially because he'd not agreed to this but clearly he was stuck now. "Yuno, these are some of my classmates. Midoriya, Uraraka, Ida, this is my brother and rival Yuno."
"But you look nothing alike." Ochaco said as she began to eat her simple rice dish after giving thanks for the meal. "So how can you be brothers?"
"Foster or adoptive brothers is more accurate." Yuno said surprising Ochaco. "We're both orphans raised in a church orphanage in Hage."
"Right, I remember Asta on the opening day, I am sorry for that I let my impatience get the better of me, you showed me that I need to work on that to be a good hero." Ida said as he bowed his head to Asta again before he began to set to his beef stew and the large glass of orange juice that he had. "Tenya Ida of the Ida family at your service. If you're Yuno then you're the kid who topped the entrance exam."
"Um yes that would be me." Yuno said a little put off by Ida but knowing that he'd have to deal with such attitudes in his life so ignoring it.
"Oh man that was so impressive." Izuku said. "109 points with 50 at least in each category, that's unreal. No one since Novachrono has managed that. How'd you do it?"
"My Quirk is very versatile." Yuno said knowing that it was best to just explain it as he'd get pestered regardless. "It can be used for transport, offense, and defense and as such I was able to travel fast and take out a lot of villain bots thanks to the range I have with my Quirk and the precision I've trained to have. Then, when that 0 pointer came up, it wasn't too hard to overwhelm it though I still need training to overcome my limits as I passed out after taking it down."
"Woah, you also took it down on your own as well." Ochaco said amazed. "Deku took down the one in our exam with one punch, it was so cool."
"Deku?" Yuno asked.
"My name is Izuku Midoriya." Izuku said. "But Uraraka likes Deku, which was kinda an insult from a childhood friend, but she's made me see it in a new way, so I don't mind her calling me it."
"It's got this do your best mentality to it plus it's kinda cute." Ochaco said with a smile and Nero at least could see that there was already a soft spot in the brunette for Midoriya that she was sure would only grow as the year developed. "Also, I didn't realize it wasn't his given name at first, but I prefer it."
"I see." Yuno said deciding to stick with Midoriya. "So, you punched out the robot with one blow, that must have netted you a fair bit of rescue points."
"60." Izuku admitted. "And no villain points so I came 11th. I thought I'd failed but the rescue points were hidden so I just got in thanks to them. I still need to learn to control my Quirk and I will in time."
"I know it." Ochaco said with a smile that made Izuku blush showing Nero that the softness was clearly mutual, but she wasn't going to bother with letting such mushiness as she ate so she picked up on what Midoriya had said. "I believe in you Deku."
"So, you're the one who beat me in rescue points." Nero said simply. "I was wondering who managed to get the max when I learned that I didn't top the category. That certainly explains Mr. Aizawa's attitude towards you and if you did that all on your own with no help then I guess it does make sense that you'd get the full amount."
"How many did you get?" Izuku asked curiously. "Also, what is your Quirk, you topped the grip strength and had a good showing in side to side steps yesterday, but I didn't get how."
"I got 59 rescue points mainly because I was constantly saving this moron." Nero said gesturing to Asta. "Though I did take down some villains as well which netted me points on that front as well."
"Aw man I only got 57." Asta said. "I came 3rd in rescue points with that."
"I got 45 and was 5th." Ochaco said not realizing that the 4th place person was right next to her. "All for saving Deku when he was falling at the end after he saved me."
"Wait I still want to know what, um, sorry I can't remember your name's Quirk is." Izuku said looking at Nero.
"Yes between that and Uraraka's infinity on the ball toss we got some strange results." Ida said. "What kind of Quirk can produce an unreadable result on grip strength?"
"Hold up, you were the infinity kid?" Yuno asked the girl next to him.
"Yup, my Quirk is called Zero Gravity." Ochaco said with a nod as she held up a hand to show Yuno the pads on her fingertips. "If all of my finger pads are in contact with something then I can activate my Quirk and remove the effects that gravity has on that object. Then, when I put all 10 pads together and say release my Quirk ends. If I use it too much I will be sick though as what happened in the exam."
"I see so that's how you got an infinity score." Yuno said. "You basically tossed the ball into orbit. I had the highest in my class but there was no way that I'd beat your score."
"Pretty much though even I was surprised by the score." Ochaco said. "Not that I mind, it was a good one."
"I too am curious about your Quirk." Ida was saying to Nero as this was going on. "What exactly is it?"
"I am so confused." Asta said trying to follow the various conversations.
"We'll slow it down for you." Nero said looking to Izuku on Asta's other side and speaking loud enough to ensure that any other side conversations were ended. "As for my name, you can call me Nero."
"That is a strange name." Ochaco said confused. "Is it like a nickname like Deku or something?"
"Yes and there was no one on the list yesterday by that name." Ida said thinking over it. "So, it can't be your given or family name either."
"Because obviously it's not my legal name." Nero said with a sigh as she realized that she'd have to explain this given how the records were so she may as well get it over now and hope that no one else questioned it. "I'll say this once so you don't bring it up again and because it will appear in formal documents, so you'll see it from time to time like you did yesterday. My actual name is Secré Swallowtail, but I prefer and solely go by Nero these days. Do not ask why, I won't answer it and just leave."
"Fair enough." Ochaco said accepting it without an issue while Ida pondered how odd it was but decided to leave it at that as the girl wouldn't give any further explanations to it.
"As you wish." Ida said. "Thank you for tell us, Nero."
"Thank you for understanding." Nero said. "As for my Quirk which as my classmates you should know about, it's called Sealing."
"Sealing?" Izuku asked.
"Basically, I can seal or unseal anything I touch with my hands or feet though the latter was discovered through training as I didn't realize it at first." Nero said. "Initially it was only good for unlocking or locking locks such as with doors but over time I got it to hero level and can now seal or unseal pretty much anything broken or damaged, organic or inorganic, as well as other applications of it."
"Woah so it is really useful then." Izuku said as he began analyzing it. "Basically, it has a lot of versatility that you wouldn't think of on paper but with how many things can be sealed up or unsealed it is really useful. Then there are healing applications to it which only…"
"Is he always like this?" Nero asked as Izuku devolved into a mumbling storm.
"We don't know." Ida said while Izuku mumbled and Ochaco couldn't help but admit that it was strangely cute. "This is the first we've seen of it ourselves."
"Analyzing Quirks is useful." Yuno said. "Knowing what you're up against is essential as a hero."
"Yeah but there's so much only a battle can tell." Asta said. "And you don't know what you need until you're in one."
"Not everyone can wing it like you Asta." Yuno said shaking his head as he recalled the incident when they were 5 that had ensured that they'd be rivals and had forced Yuno to shape up and take things seriously. "But you've been doing it like that for years and somehow it's still working for you so who knows."
"So reckless stupidity is his default." Nero said.
"Yup." Yuno said.
"Good to know." Nero said.
"Self-sacrifice is key to being a hero." Izuku said returning to the conversation from his mumbling storm. "So, it's not a bad thing."
"It's not in the right situation." Nero pointed out. "Don't forget what Mr. Aizawa said to you yesterday. If you can only land one hit and then are out it's not good no matter how strong that hit is."
"Oh, right you were the one who could have been expelled." Yuno said looking to Izuku as he recalled that the name Asta had given for the last place kid in his class had been Midoriya. "Asta mentioned that before you arrive, I only just made the connection."
"Yeah thankfully it was a lie." Izuku said with a sigh. "And technically I wasn't the worst, I did have a good ball toss after a lecture, second in my class there, but the one who didn't use her Quirk at all couldn't be expelled."
"I can't say that it was something I agree with." Ida said as he ate his beef stew. "But it did produce results. Hopefully, he doesn't lie to us again or else we might lose trust in him."
"What do you mean you weren't the worst?" Yuno asked confused. "Then how did you come last?"
"Apparently there are only 9 recommended students this year not the usual 10, so Nezu used his one exception when there is a spot open in the 10 recommended slots to admit a girl in our class." Izuku said. "So, she can't be expelled due to that, but she didn't use her Quirk at all and was ranked 24th for it."
"He claims that she lacks control." Asta said. "I bet that just means that Silva's Quirk is really powerful. Hopefully, we will see it later."
"We will." Nero said simply. "Aizawa will review what happens in today's hero class, I'm sure of it, so she knows that she has to use it."
"Cool." Asta said.
"I am looking forward to seeing what kind of Quirk can get you in on a special exemption." Izuku said. "It has to be impressive even if she can't control it."
"I just hope that Aizawa doesn't expel us after the hero training today." Ochaco said nervously. "That was a lot to deal with yesterday."
"Your teacher sounds like a nightmare." Yuno said. "I'm glad mine doesn't threaten expulsion."
"What's yours like?" Asta asked. "Your teacher that is."
"Mr. Vlad is pretty straightforward." Yuno said. "He's expecting general progression that we build up steadily over time, but we'll get a better sense after today's hero class. The whole assessment was just to evaluate us, no threats of expulsion, and after today we'll have a proper training schedule to work with to get stronger."
"Lucky." Izuku said. "That was nerve wracking for sure."
"It does make wonder about the last place person's Quirk though." Yuno said. "He's recommended but his Quirk is apparently hard to evaluate outside of human on human combat so tomorrow when we have that it will be pretty interesting. Naturally, he wasn't expelled for it and Mr. Vlad was very understanding about it."
"Yeah I can't wait for some battles." Asta said. "I didn't get the best chance to show off, so I'll really enjoy it."
"Of course, a meathead like you would like the battles." Yuno said. "It's what you're good at."
"Well battles will give me a chance to show off my sweetheart so I'm looking forward to them though I'll admit I'm better against Grimm with her than humans." A new voice said and Izuku looked to see Ruby Rose approaching with a tray in her hands and a western meal on it with a large side of cookies for some reason. "Mind if I join you guys? Everywhere else is full."
"Sure." Izuku said as Yuno just resigned his fate to being with all of Asta's classmates as Ruby took a seat next to Ochaco.
Ruby let out a sigh of relief as she sat down. She'd been nervous as to where to eat when she got her food but thankfully some of her class, including the two nice people she'd spoken to the day before after her little incident with Weiss Schnee, were on this table and there was an opening for her so she could join them for the meal.
That incident had really rattled her to start her time as Ruby wasn't exactly the best at making friends and had been nervous about it going into U.A. She'd even spoken to Yang and Blake about it the night before her first day and they just told her to be herself and she'd make friends in no time. Well, she was herself and she'd flattened and then accidentally groped the only other person in her class who was a Huntress track student, so things hadn't started well for her in the slightest.
Thankfully things had looked up for Ruby from there as she then got to know Midoriya and Uraraka who seemed nice though for some reason she felt slightly awkward around them as if she was interrupting something despite being the first there but at least they were friendly, so she had some new friends, hopefully. Of course, things then got worse for a moment what with Aizawa's opening test and expulsion threat for the person who came last in it.
Ruby took it seriously, as she should as both Yang and Blake confirmed that the rational deception statement was the real rational deception and that had Aizawa not been impressed he would have expelled Midoriya which really hurt Ruby's head to think about. Apparently Midoriya had shown progress with his throw, enough to avoid an expulsion, so things were good on that front, but Ruby had still been worried regardless.
She had good reason to be seeing as she was a recommended student and she was still uneasy with that status as Ruby wasn't sure if she was truly worthy of it even after getting into U.A. via the recommended exam. That feeling was made worse after Weiss's reaction to meeting her, so she knew that she had to give it her all and try to score as high as possible on the assessment test.
Thankfully she'd managed that with not only the fastest time in the dash but managing to come 5th in the class much to her pleasure even if Weiss did beat her but that Glyphs Quirk of Weiss's was really versatile, so it made sense. Ruby had told all of this to Yang and Blake who'd both been proud of her and then Blake told her not to worry about Weiss because had Weiss not come to U.A. she would likely have been a recommended student at Shiketsu where her family was known to go. Likely she had to be a normal entrant if she wanted to go to U.A. so Ruby needed to remember that going forward.
That had appeased her though she had pointed out that Weiss had apparently come second in the entrance exam to some kid in Class 1-B who'd even beat Yang's score apparently. That had shocked the girls and then prompted Yang to declare her intention to challenge that boy when she had the moment to which Blake reminded her that she would get a chance to do so in time, and Yang just gave a predatory grin at that that Ruby didn't like.
Overall, it had been a mixed day even with the whole Weiss thing so Ruby was hoping that her first proper day would be more straightforward than what she'd just gone through. So far it had been as the morning classes were pretty simple, her fluency in English made that class easy for her and she was right up there in the math class as well though she knew that she'd struggle in classes like history and classical Japanese so those were going to be annoying. Now, though, she had lunch and was nervous again as she didn't know where to sit to eat her meal.
Yang had made it clear that Ruby should eat with her own class and Blake had agreed as it was best for Ruby to do so as she could make friends with her classmates that way and thus Ruby was looking around when she entered the cafeteria and got in line for food to see where she could eat. It didn't help that her first option, Yaoyorozu who she'd not had a chance to chat to since starting, was eating with Weiss and that Silva girl who gave Ruby the same, if not harsher vibes, than Weiss so that group was out.
The others in her class were around but she didn't really know them so that ruled them out and of course she couldn't eat with Yang and Blake, so she was nervous. Her sister and Blake were on a whole table with their fellow Huntsmen and Huntress track kids in their year, Ruby could recognize them easily thanks to watching Yang and Blake in the Sports Festival and hearing their stories. Even without that, though, it was also hard to miss the bright red hair of Pyrrha Nikos and the short orange hair of Nora Valkyrie who were both sitting next to the Huntsmen in their class, a blond boy called Jaune Arc and a boy with a pink streak in his hair called Li Ren.
Ruby of course knew the gossip on the group thanks to Yang's loud mouth but even she with her limited understanding of romance could see that the other girls liked the boys with them. Yang had said that Pyrrha was hopelessly in love with Jaune, and had been since the pretty much the start of their time at U.A. bit that he was utterly blind to it while everyone just assumed that Nora and Ren were a couple by how they acted though Yang claimed to frustratingly have no proof of it.
All that was a little beyond Ruby though as she passed the table still looking for a place to seat though she did note that with them were two boys and a girl that completed the table. She noted their appearances as she passed and quickly identified the two boys though she wasn't sure who the girl was. One of the boys a street punk kid with black and gray hair and a scar on his forehead heading into his hairline, the other a blond boy with restless energy, were arguing over a dessert.
Ruby knew that the blond boy was Luck Voltia, a Quirk Knight candidate likely to join the Black Bulls and as battle mad as Yang and Nora put together apparently which was why Yang loved fighting him, while the other boy had to be his best friend and rival Magna Swing. Clearly they all got along so Ruby didn't even try to disturb them, not that she could as the rest of the table was taken up by an unholy amount of food that was being put away by the tiny girl with a black bun that Ruby didn't recognize and had no idea how she could eat so much with such a small frame.
As such Ruby kept looking around and had finally seen the spare seat next to Uraraka and gone there to ask to sit. She'd been welcomed and was glad for it.
"Thanks." Ruby said as she began to tuck into her food. "There's so much to take in here that it's hard to process everything."
"Yeah I get that." Ochaco said. "It's going to take a while to adjust to U.A. as it's so different to junior high."
"Yes it will but we are at U.A. so we should do so quickly." Ida said before looking to Ruby as she was eating. "Actually, Rose was it? I do have a question for you."
"Shoot." Ruby said as she ate. "Though call me Ruby if you like."
"Er, ok." Ida said not going to as he was too polite to call a girl he'd just met by her given name, but he soldiered on. "What is your Quirk? I've never met anyone other than my brother who can outrun me, but you beat me comfortably in the 50 yard dash and my family prides itself on speed. It makes sense as I did hear that you're a recommended student."
"Oh yeah we never discussed that." Ochaco said. "That's so cool that you got recommended."
"You must have a lot of potential to get it." Izuku said. "I did watch your Quirk in the assessment, it is certainly interesting how you seem to be able to break your body down and then travel at fast speeds with some flight for a certain amount of time and the way you used it for more than just a simple boost of speed shows that you really understand your Quirk. Why the rose petals though?"
"I'm not sure about the details as I don't how my Quirk works in detail and the rose petals I can't explain but I have trained hard to master it." Ruby admitted a little nervous talking about her Quirk. "Its called Petal Burst and does just as you say it does Midoriya, at least from my understanding of it that is. Speed is the core of it but there is a bit more to it I believe and until I got that recommendation, which I swear was accidental and unintended, I never used it as more than a supplement to my weapon."
"Right, you're a Huntress track student so you use a weapon to fight in addition to your Quirk." Ida said. "Still to use your Quirk like that is impressive. Been a while since I've been beaten in a sprint."
"Well, I am the fastest out there, I take pride in my speed." Ruby said with a smile. "And going sub 3 seconds in the 50 yard dash was big for me. I doubt anyone else did that."
"I did." Yuno said, he didn't really want to talk but he felt that he should at least be polite. "As did some other kid in my class but he can copy Quirks, so he copied mine for the test to get a slightly slower time than I did."
"Really?" Ruby asked leaning forward to see the tall, shaggy haired boy sitting opposite the gray haired kid in her class she was sure was called Asta. "What was your time? Mine was 2.87 seconds."
"2.06 seconds." Yuno said stunning everyone but Asta.
"How?" Ida asked amazed.
"Yeah, I can't do that." Ruby said her eyes wide. "I was going flat out to get such a score."
"My Quirk is versatile." Yuno said again those the new girl hadn't been here when he'd first explained it, so he gave a brief overview. "It can be used offensively, defensively and for near instantaneous transport between two point. That's how I did it."
"Damn that's impressive." Ruby said.
"Yeah well this lady killer has always been like that." Asta said shaking his head. "And you may have bested me so far Yuno, be it in the entrance exam or the assessment tests our classes had, but I'll surpass you soon."
"Then I'll just have to get stronger to avoid that." Yuno said with a grin, and it suddenly hit Ruby who the boy that clearly wasn't in their class likely was.
"Wait, are the guy who topped the entrance exam for non-recommended students?" Ruby asked. "Yuno, was it?"
"Er yeah." Yuno began a little confused before he remembered what had been said when the girl, Rose he recalled Ida calling her, had sat down. "You're a recommended student, aren't you?"
"Yeah so I didn't see the results though I heard of them." Ruby said. "My sister was pissed that someone topped her score so quickly after she managed to become the first in over 20 years to surpass 100 on the exam. Good to know who did it, she's going to have fun if she ever gets to spar with you."
"I'll pass." Yuno said not sure who this girl's sister was but not wanting to get involved in any drama over his score. "I'm just glad I scored so highly."
"Wait, Rose, did you just say your sister was upset at someone scoring higher than her?" Izuku asked getting confused himself. "Does that mean that she's a student here? Or at least went here in the past if she's more than 2 years older than you?"
"Yeah, Yang's one of the top of the third years." Ruby said with a smile. "She was one of the reasons why I applied here, as were our parents, though I assure you that I got my recommendation on my own, it was a shock even to her."
"Yang, as in Yang Xiao Long, the Golden Dragoness?" Ida asked. "The reigning Sports Festival Champion and with Yuno here one of only three plus 100 scorers in the entrance exam since All Might? She's your sister? I would never have guessed that."
"Yup though I don't want to trade on her reputation." Ruby said with a nod. "I'm here to forge my own path and style, which is very different to Yang's, but I still look up to her."
"I understand, I am the same way though the age gap is larger in my case." Ida said with a smile. "My older brother is my own inspiration; I want to be a hero just like him and live up to the reputation he created."
"Wait I'm confused." Ochaco said looking between them. "First off both of you have older siblings who are heroes or at least hero course students?"
"Correct." Ruby said as she went onto her cookies with enthusiasm, and they were certainly as good as they looked. "Yang's still a student though."
"And my brother is the pro hero Ingenium." Ida said with a smile. "A noble hero who lives by the hero code and runs into danger to save those in need. He's who I look up to and who I want to be like when I am a hero myself."
"No way, Ingenium is an amazing hero." Izuku said fanboying again. "He runs an agency in Tokyo with dozens of sidekicks."
"Yes he has done well, and I will live up to that name." Ida said proudly.
"Ok that I get but I'm still a little confused." Ochaco said looking to Ruby. "You're sister is Yang Xiao Long, right?"
"Yes." Ruby said and then it hit her, and she realized it was best to explain this now as so far she'd only told Momo and that was after the recommended exam. "Right, I should have mentioned but it's not really relevant to me but Yang's technically my half-sister. Same father different mothers though my mom raised both of us until, well, I won't get into that. Anyway, my mom never married my dad, so I kept her family name not his while Yang did get the family name."
"Oh ok." Ochaco said deciding to leave it at that.
"That does explain it, thank you." Ida said with a nod. "And it is good to know another student from a hero family."
"There is a lot to live up to, both my parents and my uncle were, or are, Huntsmen heroes who all inspire me in their own ways." Ruby said. "I will be just like them one day."
"Right, you're a Huntress track hero." Asta said finally picking up on it though he had been distracted with finishing his food. "Does that mean that you have a weapon? I'm looking to learn more with my sword, so any help is needed, and I know that Schnee uses a sword as her weapon."
"Of course, I have my sweetheart Crescent Rose." Ruby said with a smile. "She's amazing."
"Is it a sword?" Asta asked eagerly.
"No but you'll see her in training later." Ruby said with a smile. "I'll be whole with her, she's in my costume case at the moment and I've been missing her terribly since I had to put her there alongside my Huntress outfit."
"Alright I'll wait." Asta said not sure what the weapon was but if it was a melee one then he was sure he could gleam something from it that he'd be able to adapt into his own style.
"But speaking of weapons can you tell me about yours?" Ruby asked her weapons nerd nature coming out as she looked to Asta. "I've never seen a sword like yours and you make it with your Quirk? To cancel other Quirks? That's wild."
"Yeah I was thinking of that." Izuku said looking at Asta. "Your sword is impressive."
"Thanks." Asta said with a grin as Yuno sighed at the big head Asta would get from this but didn't say anything as he let Asta have his moment. "My Quirk manifested late, like only 10 month before the exam though I would have taken it Quirkless otherwise, and all I can do is summon that sword, but it is so cool. The edge will cut a Quirk and end it or stop a Quirk from working for a bit if I hit your Quirk Factor while the flat reflects certain emitter class ones. I don't think anyone here, but Yuno has a Quirk that can be reflected but still it does do that, and a reflection actually increases the original power of the Quirk being reflected."
"Yeah I saw it was so cool." Izuku said. "And it was stronger than Mr. Aizawa's which was impressive. I get it though, my Quirk manifested late as well hence why I still have some control issues."
"No worries then we'll all get better together." Asta said as the others in Class A nodded at that. "All you need is some training and the control will be there. I managed to find a guy in the woods while training who understood swordplay due to his Quirk, so he taught me the basics that I needed but I'm still getting better the more I observe and learn."
"Yeah do you have any idea how long it took me to get Petal Burst under control?" Ruby asked. "Years because it's so hard to move in it."
"I agree with Rose." Ida said with a nod. "I took a while to understand how my gears worked and how best to operate them and even today my brother has some problems as he doesn't have gears so has breaking issues which is why he has airbags in his costume. We can all do this together. It just goes to show both of yours' potential to get into U.A. with late Quirks."
"Thanks." Izuku said with a smile, he knew that he had to get One for All under control, but he still didn't know where to start though with new friends helping him he knew that he could do it.
"So, what will the hero training be like?" Ruby asked. "Didn't Aizawa say that it really starts today."
"No idea but I can't wait for it as I'm hoping for a battle situation." Asta said. "That way I can really show off."
"It will be an informative session for sure." Ida said. "Probably…"
From there they devolved into discussing what the training might be after lunch until the bell rang and it was time to head back to the classroom to be told about it. That also meant that soon it would be time to try on their hero costumes for the first time, for those who had them that is.
As this was happening, another discussion was going on between the three high upper class girls at their table. It was similar and would have just as much of an impact on what was to come as the other chat did.
"So, Noelle, will you use your Quirk at last today?" Momo asked as they ate the fancy meals they'd selected; money was nothing to them and frankly all of them had a poor concept of it. "Mr. Aizawa did say that you had to which means that it would be in your best interest to use it."
"Yeah I'd like to see that control of yours." Weiss said. "And if it has improved."
"I will use it and I have what I need for it." Noelle said thinking back on her costume request though her outfit was basically her family's default uniform, but she needed her additional item for her to actually use her Quirk. "I have to, Mr. Aizawa called me out yesterday, so I need to show it."
"Good thing your pride allows for it." Weiss said with a smirk. "I am eager to see how it has come along."
"Well, we may be facing each other so I'll make sure to use it on you." Noelle said though she was worried about it as she wasn't at all accurate with her Quirk and if she got frustrated then her limited control was shattered and that could be really bad with her Quirk. "Then you can experience it firsthand Weiss."
"Do you really think it will be combat between students?" Momo asked. "Seems a but much right off the bat."
"Aizawa did have that test right away so why not throw us into combat right at the start as well." Weiss pointed out. "And this makes the most sense to help get a baseline for us. Mr. Aizawa tested our Quirks in general but some can't be tested outside of actual combat like that Asta boy's so a combat test would make sense."
"Don't mention that insect." Noelle said still annoyed that such a low born commoner would be a Quirk Knight track student as well. "He may have an interesting Quirk but he's not on the same level as a Silva."
"There goes your classism." Weiss said. "You Quirk Knights are always like that for some reason. I thought you were supposed to help people nobly, not look down on them."
"We are the new nobility or should have been, so it is only right that we are above the insects as we use our power to help them." Noelle said. "And I am from one of the three great houses, so I have the right to look down on an insect like him. Besides, it's not like you're beyond that Weiss or do you want me to bring up the other Huntress in our class."
"That groper is too hyper and not professional enough for our noble branch." Weiss said blushing with a mix of indignation and embarrassment at that incident. "How she got a recommendation is beyond me."
"You really should give Rose a chance Weiss." Momo said defending Ruby as she'd actually been in the recommended exam with her. "She's talented, came 5th in the assessment and got in as a recommended student which I can assure you isn't easy. So, what if she's a bit hyper, it works for her. Besides, if this is a team thing there is a high chance that you and Ruby are placed together as Huntress branch students. Same for Noelle with Asta as he's a Quirk Knight unless there's another in the class. It would just make the most sense seeing as those two branches really focus on teamwork from the start."
"Don't remind me." Noelle said annoyed. "That is going to be so humiliating."
"There is another Quirk Knight track girl in the class I think." Weiss said ignoring that she might have to work with Rose as she didn't want to think of that just yet. "That horned girl always with him now. She was in our exam section as well and she didn't seem phased by Asta's references to the Quirk Knights in it so I'm sure she's on that track."
"Right, her I forgot about her." Noelle said. "Who is she? She dared invoke my ancestor, but I still don't know who she is."
"If I had to deduce based on the list Mr. Aizawa showed us at the end of the assessment test and the names that I heard yesterday I am pretty sure that her name is Secré Swallowtail." Momo said recalling the list. "Though I've not heard anyone call her that for some reason."
"So that's her real name, now I recall it from the entrance exam list." Weiss said. "She was 5th in it right behind that unprofessional loudmouth Bakugo. It's no wonder you've not heard her name as she goes by Nero not Swallowtail or even Secré."
"Why?" Noelle asked.
"No idea." Weiss said. "Some people are odd like that. I also can't figure out her Quirk. It seems to allow her to fuse her hands and feet to things, she did that with my glyphs in the entrance exam, but that's too basic for it."
"Well, we will learn in time." Momo said as a bell rang indicating that lunch was almost over. "We should get back to the classroom though, it will soon be time for hero training."
The other girls nodded at that as they got up to bus their trays, something all three would have to get used to having never done anything like that before, and then headed back to the classroom to learn what the afternoon' training session would entail. None of them knew that the events to come would shape those on the nonstandard path in ways they could never have imaged.
I think that's a good place to end this shorter than normal (for this story) chapter. A nice, fun, lunch chat between groups as they get ready for what is to come, go over the assessment test, and what not. These lunch chapters will be seen more and more throughout this story and of course evolve as they do because they are good transition and character building chapters. Also, we've finally gotten the first chapter where all three major franchise characters are chatting together so hopefully y'all enjoyed that. Next up is the battle trial, what could possibly happen there with the 5 new additions to Class 1-A? Well soon you will see but for now that is all that I really have for you as this is a simpler, shorter, chapter so I will leave it off here. If you like this story please follow, favorite (this story and me) to keep up with it and leave a review or PM, your support is what helps motivate me to keep up this work and any questions posed before the next chapter is uploaded I will try to answer. Until next time.
